This book is something that I wish I'd had when I first moved to Korea. I've lived in my adopted home for a decade and during that time, I've met an astounding number of foreigners who were thriving here while I've also met plenty of them who clearly were only surviving, and just barely in some cases. There are even people who've been here a long time still in survival mode, living in tiny apartments, bouncing around from sub-par job to sub-par job and doing nothing to plan for their futures. Conversely, I've met people who, even though they had only been living in Korea for a few months had clearly adapted and were making positive, healthy and sustainable lives for themselves. This book is a collection of tips from long-term expats who are far beyond surviving and are thriving in Korea. They have a lot of wisdom to share with people who are thinking about coming to Korea, have recently just arrived or perhaps even been around for years but want to pick up a few new tips for making their lives better. I hope you find this book very useful to help you get beyond only surviving South Korea—my goal is that it will be an extremely practical resource that you'll keep going back to for some more inspiration. Make this place your home and thrive. Investing time, money and energy into doing this is something that you'll never regret.

For those thinking about EPIK By Cecelia This book is fantastic for someone who (I) is preparing or thinking about teaching English in Korea, (II) has never lived abroad, and (III) has very little knowledge about South Korea. This book will help you get mentally and emotionally prepared for the challenges ahead while providing you with few practical tips.I have several years of experience living abroad, and so.. I personally wish there was more practical information. I found the information on KOTESOL, Iherb, KEB, MyBee, and etc. VERY helpful. I just wish there was more.Overall, it's a great book

5 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A Book of Filler By mixter An interesting concept but like most of the author's books full of filler. Do people really need advice such as; "work hard" and "avoid drinking too much" and the mind blowing "learn Korean"? A lot of the advice is common sense, if you have the qualifications to work in Korea in fact if you can manage to find your way to the amazon website, I suspect you already know these tips.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Can a rich Victorian write a working class novel? By Richard E. Hayes Mrs Ward made so much money from her novel Robert Elsmere that she felt guilty. This one would distance her from the aristocratic comforts she had achieved, by portraying the life of a working class man, set in the industrial city of Manchester. She did research on the Chartist movement of the 1830s, and in the industrial north. There is an echo here of Charles Kingsley's Alton Locke (1850). David and his sister are orphans, being raised by an aunt and uncle in the country. It's a stark and cruel environment. David runs away to the city to make his fortune, and promises to bring his sister soon. He learns the book shop trade, educates himself, acquires his own shop, writes deistical pamphlets. There is an unexpected inheritance. When David and his sister are re-united, she is a mature and feisty woman determined to go her own way. She ends up in Paris, living an unconventional life. David tries to rescue her. In Paris, he has an affair with a young bohemian artist. This section of the novel is a "Storm and Stress" episode in which David thinks of suicide. A wide range of religious characters appear, from strict Evangelical, to liberal Anglican, to French Catholic. A virtuous Evangelical spinster intervenes in both lives, with a bittersweet outcome.

That's the central theme that runs through this eclectic mix of stories, poems and reflections. It modernizes the literary romance that's existed with pirates - guiding the reader on a journey that shows those desirable characteristics we've associated with a bearded man scouring the world for his treasure can still be found today within people of both sexes, all walks of life, and even in the mirror!

I bet no one reads this, but I'm writing it anyway By A Customer Jeffrey Farnol is not much remembered, but he seems to have been popular at the time he was writing. I read this book because I heard that Farnol was an important influence on Jack Vance, a science fiction writer I like. This book concerns Barnabas, a young (about 22) son of an English innkeeper who inherits a substantial fortune. He decides to try to join London's fashionable world, and has some success for a while. He becomes friends with a Viscount, has a stumbling romance with a Lady, gets into tons of fistfights, does some horse racing. Eventually, it is discovered that he is only an innkeeper's son, though, and he loses his place in the fashionable world. I think you get the idea. The first part of the book went slowly, and so did the last part. The middle was more interesting to read. Overall, the book was well written and enjoyable.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Well-Written Regency Book By E&M 4.5 StarsThis is the first book I have read from this author. I was interested in reading a Regency book written by a male author. The young Barnabas has just inherited a vast sum of money after his uncle's death. He wishes to become a gentleman so he heads to London but meets some interesting individuals on the way.Clean and light romance. An entertaining read.

He decides he would like to become a gentleman and heads to London. He meets a few interesting individuals along the way including his future love.I enjoy reading books from the Regency period so I truly enjoyed this book.Even though Farnol was born a few decades before Georgette Heyer I find their style of writing a little the same. Entertaining and clean romance.

When she was suddenly given the opportunity of a new life in rural Jutland, journalist and archetypal Londoner Helen Russell discovered a startling statistic: the happiest place on earth isn't Disneyland but Denmark, a land often thought of by foreigners as consisting entirely of long, dark winters, cured herring, Lego and pastries. What is the secret to their success? Are happy Danes born or made?

Helen decides there is only one way to find out: she will give herself a year, trying to uncover the formula for Danish happiness. From child care, education, food and interior design to SAD, taxes, sexism and an unfortunate predilection for burning witches, The Year of Living Danishly is a funny, poignant record of a journey that shows us where the Danes get it right, where they get it wrong, and how we might just benefit from living a little more Danishly ourselves.

Helen Russell is a journalist and former editor of MarieClaire.co.uk. She now lives in rural Jutland and works as a Scandinavia correspondent for the Guardian as well as writing a column on Denmark for the Telegraph.

By Elisabeth Price I'm actually still a Dane but haven't lived in Denmark for se entry years now, so this gives me an update on current mores that Id otherwise not get, and it's fascinating! I have known for a long time that I can never "go back to Denmark." What I knew as Denmark has altered almost beyond recognition. I think it's a change for the better: it's a more egalitarian society and very few people are forced into drudgery to stay alive. After 45 years in the United States I'd find it very difficult to live there now, excellent as it is in many ways. Having no Danish background at all, Helen Russell observes the Denmark of today with eyes uncontaminated by distant memories, but prejudiced in favor of the Danes being the happiest people on earth. This makes the book pleasant, interesting and funny to read, as well as quite informative. I really enjoyed it!

We lived as guests as we worked for NATO. Viborg was our home and we loved the community. The book explains some of the cultural practices we were not aware of as "Guests". I enjoyed reading about many of the experiences the author encountered, as we too lived "Danishly" In many cases. Loved the culture, and the people and valued our time there. In all fairness I cannot see America being able to adopt many of the social policies that the Danes live by, as we are such a large country, filled with so many cultures. I applaud the authors refreshing take as an outsider willing to give it her all in adopting a new homeland.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyed Helen's musings of the Danish culture By jsk A witty and enjoyable memoir about the land of Lego. Enjoyed Helen's musings of the Danish culture, of which I knew little beforehand. Made me want to read more about the Danes and possibly put Denmark on my travel bucket list. Be forewarned…you'll crave pastries ("Danish") and probably make a few trips to the bakery, as did I!

Author Lee Atterbury seems to get better with every novel he writes. Even those who are not horsemen or horsewomen will enjoy reading about the exploits of Jim Taylor, the lawyer turned (reluctant) lawman, and his wonderful horse Buck, as they help the local Wyoming sheriff bring neo-Nazis, drug runners and kidnappers to justice.

'Crazy Woman' is a crime drama with charismatic characters, and intriguing scenarios, keeping you engaged with suspense at every corner. It is clear that Atterbury writes from personal experience in regards to his own experience with horses. If you like crime novels with a twist (and horses) this one is for you! Recommended reading!

Now Quinn risks her life every day in the Secret Service, protecting the First Lady of the United States. Only she can't safeguard her from the ruthless advisors intent on hiding the President's debilitating illness for their political gain. Suspecting a conspiracy that places the fate of the President, his wife -- and the nation -- on the line, Quinn whisks the First Lady out of the capital to her South Carolina home. The Real Deal, by Fern Michaels

From Booklist Quinn Star has thrived since she quit the FBI, disgusted with the old-boy environment and devastated at the seeming betrayal by Puff, her boss and lover. Almost 10 years later, she has her own law practice, teaches, and is engaged to a judge. In fact, everything's perfect until Puff reappears to offer Quinn the job she always wanted, secret service agent at the White House. She hesitates because it will wreak havoc in her life but finally says yes. Quinn and a woman friend who also quit the FBI are to guard the First Lady, whom, it seems, is off her rocker and about to be committed. Quinn has her work cut out for her, but when she starts to see the same conspiracy afoot in the White House as the First Lady, she dedicates herself to protecting her and exposing secrets, not to mention dealing with her renewed feelings for Puff. Another fast-paced and engaging story from the prolific and entertaining Michaels. Maria HattonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Review "Fern Michaels's characters are so real and endearing...that it seems you are witnessing the story rather than reading about it."

About the Author New York Times bestselling author Fern Michaels has a passion for romance that stems from her other joys in life—her family, animals, and historic homes. She is usually found in South Carolina, where she is either tapping out stories on her computer or completing some kind of historical restoration.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. exciting contemporary romantic suspense By A Customer After performing as a superstar in a male world, Quinn Star quit the old boy network because she could not crash through the glass ceiling. She blames much of her failure on her former lover and ex boss "Puff" Lapusky, who she felt held her back. Quinn enjoys teaching law at Georgetown and loves her fiancé Judge Alexander Duval, ironically nominated to be the next FBI Director. For the first time in over seven years, Puff visits Quinn asking her to serve as a secret service agent protecting the First Lady Lettie Jaye, who has been acting strange. The Feds want her under surveillance and protected. Puff believes that Quinn is the best "man" for the job. The assignment proves problematical as Lettie uncovers a high level government conspiracy to hide the truth even if it means killing the current temporary occupants. The most difficult aspect of Quinn's job is not keeping the First Lady safe; it is the return of Puff. She now realizes that her negative feelings for him were a way of hiding her hurt because she still loves him.Fern Michaels is THE REAL DEAL when it comes to an exciting contemporary romantic suspense. Her latest tale moves on two intertwined subplots. The romance between the engaged Quinn and the man she hates and loves Puff, who should have been fired for messing with a subordinate (where is Mr. Clinton?) is remedied a bit too easily. The exhilarating White House suspense plot is filled with twists that will fool the audience who will enjoy every moment of the manipulations of those in power. This exciting romantic political thriller will appeal to fans who like the works of Nora Roberts and Jayne Ann KrentzHarriet Klausner

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. She does it again! By Sally N. Crowe Fern Michaels is one of my favorite authors, and she does it again with The Real Deal! Quinn Star (what a great name!) engaged to a boring judge, steps out of the realm of everyday life in protecting the eccentric, wacky, First Lady of The United States. However, the First Lady is right on the map about her husband. Who would know better than she that the love of her life is in trouble?I was intrigued with the tunnel that runs between the two houses in South Carolina, and I just had to laugh out loud at Quinn's (also wacky) Aunt Birdie who enjoys "doctoring" up dead people! You can always tell when reading Ms. Michael's books that she is a canine advocate. Although I'm not real intrigued with dogs myself, I do enjoy the escapades that show up in the books by this author. I highly recommend this book for a lazy summer afternoon.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. So NOT the REAL deal. By Saz This is the first of Fern Michaels I've read and I just could not take this book seriously. first of all the whole so called scam in the white house was so ridiculously far-fetched and the dialogues were so jumbled that you could literally forget how it actually started especially when the first lady rambled on and on. the characters of agent Star and Wilson were so not of women aged 40 and who have such serious top-notch jobs, they were so immature. but im willing to try more of her books...lets see.

Encrypted lyrical poems of real life struggles and strives. Ryan Morrison was raised to walk on faith, follow the signs on this road laid out for us. Life is a journey with change of plans, people, the unexpected. Proud of his down home raising, was taught to keep his life simple, but his dreams wide open. A man's worth comes from working hands, but gentle enough to lift those up in need. From a long line of farmers, mechanics, musicians, blue collar-small town country folks. The fields, backwoods, backroads, dirt roads all have taught him how to slow down when things get bumpy. No stranger to hard times and loss. When life throws dust in your eyes, wipe them off and see again. God, family, friends is your strength. The backwoods is your piece of mind.

Backwoods Cryptography, by Ryan Morrison

About the Author Ever since I can remember I have a deep love for writing. This being my first publishing, I know there is always room to grow and learn. But no matter what I am proud I accomplished it and kept with it through all these years. Well a little about myself, I am currently a General Motors dealership technician. I have turned wrenches since 1998. Some weeks I make money, some weeks I don't, lol. In 2011-2013, I had to obtain my CDL license and go over the road to make a living when the economy got slow at dealership. I traveled in all the lower 48 states and learnt a lot about this great country and different cultures. In January of 2013 I took an opening back at the dealership and came home off of the road. That is where some of the writings came from in " Backwoods Cryptography ". My writings are based on either something I've been through, someone close too me, or something worth being expressed. I try to keep it honest and real as possible. But on the other side of that, I'm also working on a couple of novels or stories. The stories are mind bending, horror, and reality all in one. That's what writing too me is about being diverse. Most of all just doing what I love too do and having fun with it also. Anything is possible if you just keep pushing for it no matter how long it takes.

Poems From Spirit, by Joan Howard

About the Author Wife and mother of 4 grown children and the grandmother of 2 precious ones; several years ago, as I spent time in the morning getting quiet and seeking peace, I found myself writing spiritual poetry. This is very surprising to me as I’ve never written anything before. As I get quiet, the poems are given to me. It is as if Spirit is giving me the words; simple but powerful words. For a time, I thought they were just for me, but in the event that they may guide others, I have shared them just in case they add to your spiritual journey in this life. They continue to come if I listen and my hope is that they will be helpful to you. This is the first of my series of Spiritual Poems.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. ah - takes me back By Dranea79 This was a fun book about Stitch Head, a long-forgotten creation of a mad scientist. Stitch Head stays around the castle to make sure his master's creations don't go wild in the nearby town and bring punishment down on his master. After years of working behind the scenes, Stitch Head is pushed into a situation where the "no visitors" rule is thrown to the wind.Stitch Head, for starters, is simply adorable. The illustrations in the book are perfect to set up the quirky atmosphere, and we have villains galore. This book reminds me so much of what I loved as a child: Odd monsters, freak shows, potions and creepy castles. Oh, and we have a monster called Creature, who has three arms. I freaking love it. This would be a great series for any boy to read. I think girls like me would really enjoy it as well - there is a girl who shows up near the end who is a butt-kicking type of gal. I have seen there are more books in the series, and I hope she is in them. I would love to read more of these to see what happens to Stitch Head next and to see if the fun continues.

By NYC Spinner This is the first of a series of the misadventures of a charming little creation called Stitch Head. What drew me to these books - even more than the story - was the incredibly high production values of the book itself. The illustrations are utterly enchanting and each and every page is a work of art. For grown up goths, looking for perfect books for their little monsters, you can't go wrong with Stitch Head!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A heart-filled tale that will keep you engaged from beginning to end! By Dad of Divas I had never heard of this story before, but when I got it my youngest daughter wanted to read it with me and we jumped right in. The story brings together the story of Frankenstein's monster to life with a ton if heart, love and more. Stitch Head is sad in some ways and heroic in others. Will he be able to find the friendship and the "life" that he has always wanted? Read this adventure filled, humorous tale that will keep you engaged from beginning to end!*I received this for review - all opinions are my own*

I recently read Sojourners of the Wilderness and really enjoyed this book By Wendy Cleveland I recently read Sojourners of the Wilderness and really enjoyed this book. Author Traci Marrs is a dear friend of mine from Fairbanks that I have known for many years through the ministry of Aglow International. She is exuberant, funny, excited, real, passionate, and very knowledgeable about the Word of God. Above all else, she is a worshiper of Jesus. Traci has a heart for God’s chosen people, and the nation of Israel. This book is about her trip to the Holy Land in December 2012. Traci takes her readers along on her journey with Ray Hughes and Selah Ministries. Their mission was to release the sound of worship and the power of prayer throughout the nation of Israel. Woven into the story are Traci’s personal life lessons, scriptural insights, and extensive research, as well as her unique sense of humor. Reading this book increased my desire for my own trip to walk where Jesus walked.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A lot more book than I expected when I picked it up! By readit This is a good book for someone who has been to Israel, or for someone who is going to go, -- or to those who just wish they could go. Traci Marrs does a "personable" discussion of what she sees and what she feels. She has done a lot of research to tie her experience to Bible history and the history of the area. I believe this would make an interesting text for a study group. There are ties into the Internet so that you can hear the music that her group sang and access some of the teachings that apply. I often pass books along, but I will keep this one to refer back to and to compare with the pictures and memories I have of my own trip many years ago. It makes me wish I were going again soon.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. As you read and travel with her on this voyage you will realize that this book is more than just another good book. By Deacon Clarence Leis Traci experienced a trip of a lifetime to the holy land that was inspired by God. As you read and travel with her on this voyage you will realize that this book is more than just another good book. You have in your hands a book loaded with spiritual power that will change your life and hunger for God. I was inspired by the use of scriptures and how they blended in with their travels day by day. God loves to bless those who love him. A tremendous spiritual encounter. Enjoy.

“The Divine Unknown Everywhere – the light and darkness of it, the hopes and sorrows; the happiness and comedy; in the heart, the sky, the soil, the suns; in the people, the animals, the plants, the seas and bees and trees – that’s the only song I wish to sing, the only song worth singing. -- Chuck Taylor Like Jack Kerouac, Taylor moves beyond the grand secular tradition of modern writing into the unknowable landscapes of the spiritual. This book is just what the name implies, a tour through the multiplicities of the human heart, a deconstructive exploration of the interpretive mind, a clever philosophical clutch at the divine sweetness of the human soul waiting beneath the exterior. -- Connie Williams The Prose Poem is one of the more controversial styles in the poetry world as it sounds like a massive contradiction. How can something that is prose be considered poetry? Well, it’s not as black and white as that. Prose Poetry removes the line breaks and usual lyrical style while maintaining other poetry qualities. It is a less frightening style for readers who are not familiar with poetry, and a unique style for experienced poetry lovers. This collection seeks to bring readers of all kinds together through the use of poetic narrative, leaving behind the conventional style of poetry and moving into a widely experimental form. Prose Poetry has a good range where it can be taken. Though most are about a page, the pieces can be longer, depending on the artist behind the craft. Readers can expect to see a vastly human nature in the collection; experiencing moments of sympathy for others to the feeling of being alienated in conservative America. Taste, I Say, You’re Timeless, is a fantastic beat style work, and one that simply cannot be ignored. It is a timeless collection! http://www.weaselpress.com/#!chuck-taylor/c16ra

Taste I Say, You're Timeless, by Chuck Taylor

About the Author Chuck Taylor went to work early, and although it may have inhibited his social skills, the work kept him out of all sorts of trouble, especially as a teenager, innocent and stupid around the ladies. He began mowing lawns and operating a paper route, and then moved on to janitor work and house painting, and later worked as a minor electrician, morgue attendant, lab researcher, cafeteria lineman, dishwasher, daycare worker, part-time records and reference librarian, special collections clerk, bookstore clerk, printer’s assistant, furniture mover, children’s magician, typist, and soft water salesman. Taylor also worked poets-in-the-schools in Galveston, Beaumont, and Victoria, and as a CETA poet-in-residence for Salt Lake City. As a teacher he has taught at the Universities of Texas at Austin, El Paso, and Tyler, as well as at Austin Community College, Angelo State, and for twenty-five years, Texas A&M in College Station and in Koriyama, Japan. He has been married three times and has three ex-step children, three blood children, and seven grandchildren. Taylor has published two novels, two story collections, two memoirs, and numerous volumes of lined verse and prose poetry. His most recent books are Poet and Vampire and Magical, Fantastical, Alphabetical, Soup. It is not surprising that his first novel, briefly considered for a movie, is called Drifter’s Story. He feels his path has been one of stable instability, but he has gotten to know a few places well.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Humor, Darkness, Light By Chuck Taylor The writing is tops here. Great sentences. A lot of humor too, such as "Script Treatment," a poem that pretends to be a bad script summary submitted to an agent to see if some studio would buy a full script. Many of the characters names, I realized half way through, come from a match box, like "Keep Away from Children." The author makes serious fun of his own spiritual ideas, and in the humor seems to imply that knowing the sacred requires accepting the darkness and light of life.

When a young student at a military academy mails some of his poetry to the great poet Rainer Maria Rilke, seeking advice, he initiates years of correspondence, during which Rilke expresses his most personal insights into the artist's relationship with life, the interior needs of the individual growing towards maturity, and how the impulse to artistic creation can and should be a source of abiding and developing happiness even for those who cannot become artists.

Written in Rilke's early, struggling years, Letters to a Young Poet is a work of beauty and urgency. Its discussion of the young soldier's difficulties in finding his identity and vocation, mirrored in Rilke's own life, have resonated with generations of readers for over a century, and it stands as one of the most beloved and widely read sets of letters in the world.

This new translation by Soren Filipski is both accurate and fluid, capturing the intense, rhapsodic energy of Rilke's writing as well as the precision of his ideas. His sensitive narration captures Rilke's emotion and flourish in this brief yet powerful work.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An essential read and pleasurable edition. By Gwen This book was given to me as a gift. I had read it before in college, but it wasn't until I was working at a job that I didn't really like, struggling to make ends meet that Rilke's words began to make sense. This short book serves as a guide not only for poets and artists, but for people. Everyday people living everyday lives can read this book and gain a deeper, more meaningful perspective on how to remain fully aware of this world and the beauty it has to offer. I would highly suggest it for anyone who needs some brief moments of reflection in their busy, chaotic lives. Soren Filipski's translation is smooth, and the copy itself is beautiful. The copy fits comfortably in your back pocket, and the dark matte cover is well designed.

By Robert Lawrence I discovered Rilke's "Letters to a Young Poet" years ago and it has become my favorite. Much of the advice contained in the 10 letters completed in 1908 are relevant to all in this 21st Century. I've been a great "underliner''of this book and many others and each time I reread them I am rewarded with new insights and appreciation for the works of the Authors.
