By mikemac9 I have the old version, but bought this to get the latest and greatest. Compared to the older version of this book the maps are in color and easier to read. Obviously they aren't going to rewrite every word, but I hoped with the new version to get the benefit of any changes they've made since the 2010 version. The new formatting at times is a bit hard to follow; to use Auray as an example, the town name is in bold but then there are sections below set off with large type that seem to be nearby smaller villages but apparently are areas within Auray itself.

I had to look back and forth on different pages to find out where points of interests were and how to get to them. The book is excellent if you already knew the layout of Hong Kong. Overall, it's a decent book if you want basic information to help you research further.

She's sincere and funny and tough and so full of longing.Begain's writing is clean and deceptively simple. I forgot I was reading most of the time. Then there are moments of prose that jump out and bite you, take you by surprise. The writer clearly worked hard to get things just right. Her characters and dialog, however, are what really shine. This is Beagin's talent: people. The folks Mona meets as she cleans one weird house after another are so alive and striking, I couldn’t get them out of my head. I’m still haunted by Mona’s lover and fellow addict, Mr. Disgusting, and those weird new-agey folks in New Mexico, Nigel and Shiori. But Mona is the reason to read this book. She would probably resist my raising existential questions about the meaning of life, but she negotiates her way through such a panoply of characters and life-choices that you can’t help but marvel at how many ways it is possible to turn out. The ways of living and being human are infinite and often unsettling.By the end of the book, after cleaning so many houses, after seeing their inner guts and dark corners, I felt Mona had taken me on a tour of the human race. You can tell the author knows what she's talking about, too. The scenes ring strange and true. If you're looking for a Bourne Identity thriller experience, this isn’t that. But if part of you wants to take a peek inside people’s underwear drawers to see what they’re hiding in there, then, yeah. You should read this book.

Leaves you reeling By Amazon Customer Beagin aptly portrays some very curious characters - making you not want to put the book down as you anticipate who she might meet next. Main character Mona is consumed with what's going on in everyone’s' minds, so much of the storyline in the second half of the book consists of speculation and fantasy. Being a housecleaner gives her the ability to sort through the most private of peoples' activities and she revels in this, even photographing herself in inappropriate places in their homes . The character she focuses on in the beginning, the drug addicted boyfriend - is presented to have more soul than the happy new age control freaks she meets in Taos. We are given flashbacks that show as a child Mona was horribly brutalized and alienated. Mona is drawn to damaged people and you sense the emptiness she feels when she's not surrounded by them - people who are emotionally healthy are portrayed as suspect. The book allows you to dive into her reality as she moves through life with a cold, determined drive to exist (and go through peoples' underwear drawers). You'll come out of it reeling and feeling as if you'd entered a very bleak, albeit quirkily entertaining alternate plane. If Hollywood were to come knocking, they'd have to write in a happy ending - like she moved to a big city and became a successful writer. And strangely enough I think that's just what Mona did.

Mona, the main character, was a delight with her odd sense of humor, and the people she meets are wonderfully unique. I read the other two reviews and they're completely right-this was a very good book.

Braja Sorensen, brought you directly into India. As though I was there myself. I could hear the birds, the boats going by. The beauty of the scenery of green and the waters of the Ganges. I could feel the love of the village life. I could almost smell the Indian food cooking and the soundtracks of The Muppet Show, and of course Bono "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" (and I still can't get that song out of my head) it has been my sound track in the back of my mind since it first came out.I have been a reader of Braja Sorensen, for years. Waiting for the new day and writings on her blog. She will pull you into her world and make you so comfortable... you don't want to leave.(she will insist you do though but, with love) She transports you with sound, smell and pictures of pureness, honest and humor. She is extremely witty. Brutally honest. Extremely witty did I tell you that yet?I remember the horrible accident, reading about it on her blog from her friend posting they were in serious condition... my heart stopped. I couldn't get to India, so reading when the updates were posted, praying, waiting and reading.. praying. Heart stopping I tell you. Thankful when with updates were posted and waiting for her to get well enough to phone her. As she wrote about the accident I could feel myself get the sick feeling all over again.This book will bring you into all that she went through to get to where she is. The book is filled with the writer's images and personal stories of her life in India. Tragedy, humor, insight, and the occasional tongue-in- cheek rant are woven through each chapter as the reader experiences the sites, smells, tastes, sounds, and even the feel of Braja's India. Please know, it is in no sense a travel guide, but sometimes a journal, sometimes an autobiography, sometimes heartfelt philosophy, sometimes history and exploration, and sometimes sweeping narrative. In my opinion, the book may be too short. I hope there is more to come!

Her hurt and suppurating wounded soul are laid bare for all to see in sordid detail. The reader watches transfixed as she vividly delineates the course of her initial shock at the sudden change in her loved one’s affections, the pathos of her helplessness to win him back, and the rancorous ungovernable emotions she experiences subsequently, which veer from tender to stridently vengeful and frightening. At several junctures her psychic wounds push to the surface and the poet renders these overwhelming sensations lucidly and without shame. The range of her feelings as a result of this seismic rejection in her life is at times truly hair-raising and the reader at times fears for her welfare. These are common human emotions that attend a devastating disappointment in love, but rarely are they found on the page in full public view. More often they are stifled, swallowed, and repressed, for the average woman rarely has the nerve to lay bare for all to see. There is no decorum in these pages, only the unfiltered psychological truth of the confusion, pain, rage and heartbreak that follows on the heels of a catastrophic disappointment in young romantic love. The poems are not easy reading given their intense honesty about what this young woman experienced. If there is redemption and solace to be found in these poems it is in the poet’s ability to record every iota of an all-too-common anguish in wrenching detail for all the world to see. This indeed is writing as therapy for an individual, but its brashness and truth seem to surmount mere journaling as an outlet for personal psychological relief. The poems as a group stand as a startling unforgettable testimony to an unavoidable rite of human passage, harder on some than others, but real and life changing nonetheless. Fiza Pathan displays a unique compassion and deep understanding of the travails all such individuals face when dealing with this sort of cataclysmic upheaval in one’s personal life and the extreme difficulty involved in surviving it.

Virany Written by Margaret Kell ViranyUsing vivid imagery, raw emotion and superb writing, Fiza Pathan's forty-four selected poems in The Flame Will Always Burn take us inside the heart of a young woman who is totally, irrevocably traumatized by a first experience of love transformed into utter disaster. It is not a pleasant sight, not easy to stomach, but needed to be written not only as a soul's cry for help but also as heroic self-help and a desire to help others. You will find them spellbinding to read. Some of the chapters, like "Love Comes with a Knife", "Your Reeking Flesh" and "They Found Me in a Pool of Blood," have vicious content. Others, such as"My Two Hearts", "The Flame Will Always Burn" and "I Sing My Guitar to Sleep," are gentler. The Flame Will Always Burn contains potions of rage, pain, addiction, self-loathing, murder, suicide, intoxication, infatuation and outrageousness but ends on page 90 with a prayer. In the history of medicine and literature, the disease of love sickness has baffled doctors and poets. Pathan's poems are a major contribution towards understanding it more thoroughly and comforting its millions of sufferers.

By Christina This book is full of adventure, sadness, and glory told by the mouth of a Vietnam Vet. The unrefined spelling, simplistic rhyming structure of his poems, is truly a breath of fresh air and gives you a feeling of closeness to the author and his frame of mind. An easy and addicting read, I highly recommend this book to any open mind.
