This book contains things to do and see in Ibiza. I also like the list with restaurants, bars and coffee shops. As a tourist it's impossible to know all these things. I love music too and I was pleasantly surprised to find a list with the top music festivals in Ibiza. I want to experience most of the 55 things included in the book.

Because I would have saved many many dollars on all my vacays. I am planing my trip to Spain in the fall with some friends, I can't wait to check out some of sites mention in this book.

Fantastic book for the traveller By Denise McCabe Children's Author This book was really good and it was a great eye opener for me and I’m really glad I found it. Ibiza to me has always been advertised as a major party city full of drunks for really young people and not much else. Anything I saw on tv would put me off going there. After reading this I’m thinking entirely different. The author of this book really went into great research to show how beautiful and serene really Ibiza is. This is perfect for the traveller who wants more than just nightclubbing etc. It goes into great detail of the restaurants and villages and the quiet beaches and activities. These series of books are fantastic as they really show what a place is all about rather than just the tourist commercial tourist attractions.

"Dave Perham delights the ear and imagination with his inventive poetry. The spirit of Baxter Black wafts over Dave's images and humor and makes me grateful for this new blood in the heart of cowboy poetry. Well written and wonderfully performed, (I've had that privilege) this fine collection enriches young and old. Elko is next! Bravo Mr. Perham, bravo." -Jane Kirkpatrick NY Times Bestselling and Wrangler Award-winning author of "A Light in the Wilderness." "When assessing Dave Perham’s considerable talents, the only question is whether he’s better in print or while telling his stories. He’s a comedian. He’s a wordsmith. And he’s tightly tuned to the human spirit. The result is simply the finest comedic poet I’ve heard, a true Oregon treasure." — Bob Welch Author and founder of the Beachside Writers Workshops "Dave Perham is a rock star!" -Art Spinella Author of the Drago novels. Hite I have taped to our liquor cabinet door Dave's poem about the two old guys lamenting to each other how the ravages of hard living are reflected in the images of the two characters sitting at the bar across from them while all are drinking a beer. Of course the punch line is priceless--but you've got to buy the book because I'm not going to disclose it to others! You won't regret the purchase when you see how in his homey poetry Dave Perham immortalizes such moments! The only thing better than reading Dave's playful lyrics is sitting in an audience listening to him read them aloud. His poems are delightfully visual and meant to be read aloud. This is not a book about sentimental cowboy images. It is "down home" in the sense his humor truly "hits home" on so many subjects. My all time favorite is the saga of the sauerkraut fiasco! There should be more than five stars to rate this wonderful collection of poems.

Mr. Perham's wit and ability are on full display here. I cannot recommend this enough. The author is likely to become a poet laureate soon, so get on the Perham train now.

Sigriddaughter The Journey of Velvet Brown tells a spirited teen's journey through friendship, trouble, joy, loyalty, and courage, flavored with special gifts, romance, and mystery, but above all with hopeful innocence. The narrator (and protagonist) has a lovely, authentic voice, full of energy, precocious wisdom, and generosity of spirit. It makes great sense that the horse that takes to her and becomes hers through the generosity of her best friend is called Spirit in turn.Teenage years tend to have their difficult times, but this book takes me back to the grand feeling of having the world and life spread out ahead with enough energy to just ride into it with utmost confidence that things will go well.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A captivating journey By Joanna M. Campbell This is a beautifully and sensitively written novel which keeps the reader keen to turn the pages, the pace never failing and the plot superbly well crafted: a young protagonist with second sight, a thrilling mystery to solve and a captivating journey on horseback encompassing loyal friendship and courage. Velvet's radiant personality and good humour sparkle throughout. A brilliant novel by an author to watch out for.

Two friends, one a budding writer home from Europe, the other an ambitious racketeer, meet in the only nightclub, the Tram 83, in a war-torn city-state in secession, surrounded by profit-seekers of all languages and nationalities. Tram 83 plunges the reader into the modern African gold rush as cynical as it is comic and colorfully exotic, using jazz rhythms to weave a tale of human relationships in a world that has become a global village.

Fiston Mwanza Mujila (b. 1981, Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo) is a poet, dramatist, and scholar. Tram 83 is his award-winning and raved-about debut novel that caused a literary sensation when published in France in August 2014.

Tram 83, by Fiston Mwanza Mujila

Review "A high-velocity debut . . . The writing has the pulsing, staccato rhythms of Beat poetry and Roland Glasser has exuberantly harnessed that energy in his translation from the French." —Sam Sacks, Wall Street Journal"In this visceral, fast-paced debut novel, acclaimed Congolese poet Mujila examines life in a central African state plagued by instability. . . . Rapid and poetic, Mujila depicts a province where 'every day is a pitched battle.' . . . Mujila succeeds in exploring themes of globalization and exploitation in a kinetic, engaging work." —Publishers Weekly"Mujila has turned out a multiaward-winning debut that’s decidedly cool and juicy. . . . The writing, which has all the edgy darkness of the best street lit, sometimes mimics the bar’s background jazz in its syncopation and the occasional quick-burst, broken-sentence, run-on format, with the bar regulars feeling like a Greek chorus." — Library Journal (Starred Review)"If his portrait of Congo makes it appear socially and politically hopeless, what's hopeful is the spirit of his writing, which crackles and leaps with energy. Rather than moralize, he transfigures harsh reality with a bounding, inventive, bebop-style prose, translated from the French with light-footed skill by Roland Glasser." — John Powers, NPR's Fresh Air w/ Terry Gross"Stylistically quirky and unorthodox fiction from Africa...Tram 83 is the locus of those driven by ambition, desire, greed, or pleasure—and in this underworld we meet quite a cast of characters." —Kirkus Reviews"Deeply allusive . . . most original about Tram 83 is its conscious application of a music no longer of the avant-garde – a normalized music – to sing of modern Africa. Jazz is a language his foreign readers can understand, and this is what implicates them as yet another gang of tourists in the bar of Tram 83." — Michael LaPointe, The Times Literary Supplement (TLS)"Roland Glasser’s wonderful translation, roiling and musical, delivers Mujila’s profane and teeming portrait of a semi-fictional Congolese city with all the feverish sweep of the modern African gold rush it depicts. Somehow epic, intimate, and morally complex at the same time." — Jonny Diamond, The Literary Hub, "Best Books of 2015""Mujila employs the logic of poetry – to evoke a febrile eternal present. It's bustling, strange experimental fiction in which the chaos of daily life leaks like blood from the iron fist of violence and profit." — Cameron Woodhead, Sydney Morning Herald (Pick of the Week)"With echoes of Flannery O’Connor, Ralph Ellison, and Joseph Conrad, Mujila’s language alchemizes epic poetry from violence, despair and distraction. He bebops in broken time with words and structure, improvising and free-associating." —Michelle Newby, The Rumpus"A frenetic writing style, like that of a jazz musician, gives this Africa-set novel an enthusiastic, adventurous energy . . . Tram 83 isn‘t for the faint of heart, but rather, it’s for those that have a sense of humor, an interest in seedy underbellies, and a willingness to, at times, feel a little lost in the haze of biblical imagery, flippant debauchery, free sex, and anarchy. Ezra Pound would be proud; Mujila 'made it new.'" — Josh Cook, Foreword Reviews"As a meditation or debauch on the nothing that is left behind when everything falls apart, Tram 83 is a literary manifesto, or at least a literary revelation. Its ambition has to be seen in the context of African literature’s predicament: if African literature is in need of saving—as critics regularly contend that it is—then this might be a book you could turn to as salvation." — Aaron Bady, Guernica"Mujila's writing is at once quirky and dark, frenetic and melodic. Some passages seem pulled out of a somewhat comedic noir novel while others rival David Foster Wallace's best paragraphs, both in complexity and length. . . . Tram 83, while a novel about Africa, is also a novel about the world and a text that perfectly exemplifies the global village imagined by philosopher and communication theorist Marshall McLuhan; a place where travel and technology contribute to bringing the world together in a physical, as well as a cultural, way." — Gabino Iglesias, The Collagist"TRAM 83 reads like a modern, twisted The Great Gatsby . . . eccentric and somewhat disturbing, yet inclusive and universally appealing." — Caitlin Thomas, Three Percent"Dazzling . . . a fascinating read that oscillates between gripping dystopia and humanist celebration." — Pedro Monaville, Africa is a Country"Spiky, quirky and edgy . . . Mujila serves up predators' delight." — Mark Thomas, Sydney Morning Herald"Exuberant, with an additive style . . . a formally engaging book that mimics both the structures of jazz and the sense of overhearing conversation in a bar." — The Saturday Paper (Australia)“Tram 83 is driven more by language, rhythm and atmosphere — and, most important, how all of these mix, dissolve and reconfigure in consciousness. . . . the book confronts the myopic view that literature (or industry) could “fix” or “redeem” Africa. Mujila’s world is too complex for that." — Scott F. Parker, Minneapolis Star-Tribune"As much a musical work as it is a fictional one." —Geoff Wisner, The Quarterly Conversation"A literary mixtape of a book. Mujilla utilizes everything from science fiction’s alienating style, which often features protagonists grappling to understand a brave new world just as readers must grapple with the head-spinning array of baby chicks, single mamas, students, diggers and tourists of the City-State, to the profane energy of the beat’s drug-induced, maniacal prose stylings. Add a bit of theatre of the absurd and, of course, poetry, and you have one hell of a read." — Jennifer Smart, Dallas Observer"Loud and garish, Tram 83 pushes towards overwhelming the senses. . . . Playful, even with all its dark edges, Tram 83 is a different kind of modern urban novel -- City-State so alien and removed (it is very much a city apart) that much of this feels closer (especially in Mwanza Mujila's presentation) to dystopic science fiction than the usual gritty realism." — Michael Orthofer, The Complete Review"Mujila’s transcription of the “City State” is, literally, stunning, even as one must feel stunned when sitting amid the jazzy uproar and underhand dealings of the seedy nightclub. How can so much sordidness, aggressiveness, and disastrous human interaction be so captivating — and sometimes amusing? . . . through Roland Glasser’s lively translation, Mujila tells a dynamic, sometimes scabrous, sometimes satirical story with political and economic underpinnings." — John Taylor, The Arts Fuse"A superb novel, without doubt the noisiest novel I have ever read, and one that will clearly set the African novel on a new path." — The Modern Novel“Talk about verve—and vivre: Fiston Mwanza Mujila’s Tram 83 introduces a rousing, remarkable new voice to this world, surely in its original French, most definitely in Roland Glasser’s superb translation. This book has drive and force and movement, it has hops and chops. It has voices! . . . Written with a driving, kinetic narrative voice—at times multiple voices . . . this is one of the most refreshing, energizing, and enlightening novels to come along in some time.” — Rick Simonson, Elliott Bay Book Company (Seattle, WA)“I was totally into the wild formal thug-haunted adventurousness of Tram 83.” — Forrest Gander, author of The Trace“Blade Runner in Africa with a John Coltrane soundtrack.” — Mark Haber, Brazos Bookstore (Houston, TX)“Through observation and conversation, the reader is exposed to the economic boom and cultural bust of contemporary Africa in search of what the future holds for human relationships and survival in a place where tradition and personal histories are quickly being swept under the rug by global forces. Mujila captures chaos in a hypnotic free-jazz rhythm that is so rarely found in novels of this scope.” — Kevin Elliott, 57th Street Books (Chicago, IL)“Tram 83 is part Satantango, part Fitzcarraldo, and part Blood Meridian. A dark, funny, and true accomplishment.” — Chad Felix, WORD Bookstores (Brooklyn, NY & Jersey City, NJ)“Q: What if Césaire beat Houellebecq at his own game? A: Tram 83.” — Dustin Kurtz"This book may represent the future of the novel. It is both more speculative and more rigorously structured than it first appears to be. With unique humor and a complete rejection of sentimentality, Mujila sets out to expose those global (universal?) systems—often invisible, and so human in their pettiness and contingency—that stoke the engines of chaos." — Joe Milazzo, author of Crepuscule w/ Nelli"Thanks to its infectiously energetic prose and lurching narrative, Tram 83 is a shot in the arm, a shot of bourbon, a shot in the night, echoing throughout the mines as they collapse. Deep Vellum has done us all a service by adding Fiston Mwanza Mujila's incredible first novel to the world of contemporary American fiction." — Colin Winnette, author of Haints Stay (Two Dollar Radio)"Mujila’s prose is prone to a kind of ecstatic repetition: for all the tried-and-true plot elements Tram 83 includes—estranged friends, political convulsions, totalitarian violence—the novel’s execution is where it truly excels. . . . One reader might find this to be a stylized take on a real-world situation; another might find it to head into the realm of speculative fiction. " — Tobias Carroll, The Scofield"James Ellroy would appreciate this writing style . . . TRAM 83 is a book to be savored, read slowly, and with an appreciation for the language." — Just a Guy That Likes to Read Blog

About the Author Fiston Mwanza Mujila was born in 1981 in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, where he went to a catholic school before studying Literature and Human Sciences at Lubumbashi University. He now lives in Graz, Austria and is pursuing a PHD in Romance Languages. His writing has been awarded with numerous prizes, including the Gold Medal at the 6th Jeux de la Francophonie in Beirut as well as the Best Text for Theater (“Preis für das beste Stück”, State Theater, Mainz) in 2010. His poems, prose works and plays are reactions to the political turbulence that has come in the wake of the independence of the Congo and its effect on day-to-day life. His texts have been published in the original French and in translation in many journals and anthologies in several European countries, and he has been performing at readings and festivals since 2002. Tram 83, written in French and published in August 2014 as a lead title of the "rentrée litteraire" by Éditions Métailié, is his first novel, and has been shortlisted and won numerous literary prizes in France and Austria, a French Voices Prize from the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US, and has already been translated into eight languages.Roland Glasser, a French to English translator, editor, and writer, studied French and Theatre Studies at Aberystwyth University (Wales), Film and Dramatic Arts at the University of Caen (Normandy) and Advanced Theatre Practice at The Central School of Speech and Drama (London). And a mind expanding look at life in the intrinsically artificial post-colonial realization of the "city-state" that is modern Congo.

Dark heady carnival By Ksenia Anske Word circus and carousel and pinwheel, the type you can smell, a messy painting of a city with its inhabitants drenched in fluids of body and bottle and sadness and despair. And writing. And money. And sex. This is one dark and heady African carnival, this book.

In the thousands of years of history held in the footsteps along the Silk Road, there are millions of stories. We bring you three of them. The first is from the Tang Dynasty, following a grizzled Chinese general to the gates of Central Asia where he fights a brutal battle to maintain his country’s most important trade route. The second tale follows a humble servant, an attendant to the Portuguese Jesuit Benedict Goës, as the two travel in search of a mythical Christian kingdom hidden in Cathay. Finally, we take a look at a humble truck driver who follows the twists and turns of the modern Silk Road through China and beyond—a modern look at a trade route that has weathered millennia. Off the Silk Road and into the sky, we also look at how China became a haven for odd architecture. Next, the microscope is put on China's recent plastic surgery craze and its sometimes shocking consequences. You can also have a look at how a sport gets off the ground in China, this time with under the lens of American football. Beyond that, we have fiction on ancient Chinese medicine, paintings from a prodigy changing to a darker hue, book reviews that span the universe, and even a little bit of hospital advice—all accompanied by the usual news, photography, and interviews that you've hopefully come to expect from China Dispatch.

A Planet of Aftermath is a way of saying, Life after something traumatic or Living your life afterwards , as everyone has a mini version of the world. This is my planet or world after trauma. Life goes on. This has been my journey and life s work since 2003. While some of these poems are fiction, some of them are also true. I mixed the two elements together to form most of these poems. I expect that the overall message is hope. Writing this book has been therapeutic. This is my therapy going out to the world.

Winner of the Man Booker PrizePenelope Lively won Britain's prestigious Booker Prize for this deeply moving, elegantly structured novel.  Elderly, uncompromising Claudia Hampton lies in a London hospital bed with memories of life fluttering through her fading consciousness. An author of popular history, Claudia proclaims she's carrying out her last project: a history of the world. This history turns out to be a mosaic of her life, her own story tangled with those of her brother, her lover and father of her daughter, and the center of her life, Tom, her one great love found and lost in war-torn Egypt. Always the independent woman, often with contentious relationships, Claudia's personal history is complex and fascinating. As people visit Claudia, they shake and twist the mosaic, changing speed, movement, and voice, to reveal themselves and Claudia's impact on their world.

Moon Tiger, by Penelope Lively

From Library Journal Lively recently won Britain's prestigious Booker Prize for this deeply moving, elegantly structured novel. The heroine is Claudia Hampton, an unconventional historian and former war correspondent who lies in a hospital bed dying of cancer. Forced inward, Claudia moves randomly across time and place to reconstruct the strata of her life. But "most lives have their core, their kernel, the vital centre"; Claudia's is the brief, tragic encounter she had in Egypt during the war with Tom Southern, a British tank officer on leave from battle. Tom's voice, along with those of her brother and daughter, joins Claudia's to shape a narrative that is a complex, intricately composed fugue. This haunting evocation of loss is Lively's finest achievement yet.Laurence Hull, Cannon Memorial Lib., Concord, N.C.Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review At the age of seventy-six and on her deathbed, Claudia Hampton decides to write "The history of the world as selected by Claudia: fact and fiction, myth and evidence, images and documents." It's a history seen through a kaleidoscope: "Chronology irritates me. There is no chronology inside my head. I am composed of a myriad of Claudias who spin and mix and part like sparks of sunlight on water." We meet Claudia, a woman always willing to share her opinions, who has admirers and enemies, loves and losses; fatherless Claudia, who grew up almost too close to her brother and best friend Gordon; Claudia, who could never really be a mother to her child, Lisa, or marry Jasper, Lisa's father. And Claudia certainly wouldn't tell anyone about Tom; the one love of her life; he's her own private memory, how could they understand? An independent and competitive woman, Claudia worked as a reporter in Egypt during World War II and met Tom near the front. Their brief but intense love affair affirms the power and thrill of falling in love. As people visit Claudia on her deathbed, they shake and turn the kaleidoscope, changing speed, movement, and voice, to reveal, in their own words, themselves and Claudia's impact on their world. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Holly Smith

76 of 79 people found the following review helpful. A novel of self-discovery, and reflection By Lacey Savage Perception. That is the major theme that occurs throughout the novel. The way we see and interpret events may not necessarily be the way others perceive them. One woman's "History of the World" can only be based on subjective interpretation.Claudia Hampton has lived a full, rich life. At the age of 76, she's now on her deathbed, recalling a myriad of poignant moments she had experienced in her long life. Many people have made an impact upon her life: her brother Gordon, for example, who was a mirror image of Claudia, and who shared in their borderline-incestuous relationship. Her daughter Lisa, as different from her mother as could be. Her lover of many years, Jasper, who served his purpose, but who never truly won her heart. The love of her life, Tom, who she only knew for a short period of time but loved deeply and powerfully. They all play a part in what she calls "Claudia's History of the World". The bits and pieces of her life come rapidly, with no chronological order to bind them together, and Claudia takes the time to muse over everything that has made her who she is.MOON TIGER is extremely powerful at times and always eloquently written. The love story between Tom and Claudia is breathtaking. Selfishly, I wish it had been longer. I yearned for more character development and depth in Tom, although as readers, we know as much about him as Claudia herself did. Their romance was brief, but passionate, and it left me yearning for more right along with Claudia.A word of warning: although the book is relatively short (at 200 pages), it feels lengthy and drawn out at times. Again, this only serves to highlight Lively's skill at writing Claudia's last experiences. Of course, being a dying woman's memoirs, the book is short on plot and long on self-discovery, and reflection.A must-read for lovers of literary fiction - but those with a taste for more adventurous plot lines would probably not find their desired reading material in MOON TIGER.

50 of 51 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant Booker of those lovely ghosts of phantom lovers By Pacific Writer An exotic novel about a love that haunts us from the grave to our own. Claudia's rendition of her affair in Egypt during a war, resulting in the loss of her great love and their unborn child, is depicted with an Englishwoman's genius of grammar, prose, and Latin-based mastery of the English language. Told through Claudia's story on her death bed between periods of consciousness, Penelope Lively distinguishes herself with the usage of narrative to describe a lifetime of mourning. Claudia mourns Tom throughout her adult and senior years as she lives a journalist's life in London, England. Lively's Claudia is a stubborn woman whose account of things, people, and relationships are rooted in her own view of the world. This is more than a romance, it is a look into the elements and pervasive condition of heartbreak over a lifetime. Tragic, humorous, and compelling. No wonder it was a Booker Prize - the most prestigious literary prize in the world for English language fiction.

46 of 50 people found the following review helpful. Extraordinarily well-written portrait of an unappealing character By David M. Giltinan "Moon Tiger", for which the author won the Booker prize, is a book that I could admire, but not like. The main protagonist, Claudia Hampton, an accomplished historian, lies dying in a London hospital bed and looks back upon her life. The resulting series of first-person flashbacks, interspersed with third-person accounts of the same episodes, coalesce into a tightly constructed kaleidoscopic view of Claudia's life which is impressive for the skill with which it is achieved, but ultimately left me unmoved. My fundamental problem with the book is that Claudia is such a self-satisfied narcissist that I tired of the recital of her various accomplishments and the smug superiority with which lesser characters in her history (her unfortunate sister-in-law, her disappointingly conventional daughter) are dismissed. Lively is no fool, and attempts to mitigate Claudia's unrelenting smugness with a brief episode of vulnerability and genuine emotion during a doomed World War II romance with a British tank commander who is subsequently killed in battle. The jacket cover inflates this episode by describing it as "the still point of her turning world", but the problem is that it fails to ring true. Ultimately, the version of Claudia that dominates the narrative is that of the smug, superior harpie. To whom my reaction was - why should anyone possibly care? So, while I can admire the skill with which this book was written, the emotional vacuum at its core ultimately left me cold.

Knowledge reverberates. What we’ve known, what we’ve been taught, what we thought we once knew. The weight of knowledge can be a burden, yet in Liam Day’s debut collection, how we learn informs how we function. The paths Day’s narrator travels, routes learned by rote, give way to impressions of his life, of Boston and its surrounding cities, and the ways their history entwines with his own. Through a series of intricate, interwoven images—genealogy, tesseracts, Vitruvian men—Day’s narrator lends us his memory, recollections that travel from Boston to London to Ireland and back. His hard-won insights evoke what we gain from impermanence, bring to mind wounds when we’re looking at scars.

He was witty, funny, down to Earth, the opposite of pretentious, but always eloquent in his writing, and clever in his observations. We have not seen each other since graduation, but I see that he, his writing in any case, has remained that funny and clever person I knew. Afforded Permanence is an interesting read. There is depth in his observations. Maybe more as we sit and think than might first be obvious. He is more than an observer. It is an interesting ride through Boston. I highly recommend!

On September 18, 1931, Hitler’s niece and live-in lover Geli Raubal was found dead by gunshot would in her locked bedroom in Hitler’s Munich flat. The gun was Hitler’s own Walther 6.35 mm pistol. Without inquest or autopsy the death was ruled suicide and Geli’s body spirited across the border for burial in a Catholic cemetery in Vienna. But suicides are forbidden Catholic burials. Nor was this the only problem. An avalanche of contradictions tumbled out of police reports. Game on.     While the Weimar agents are hunting the murderer, Himmler’s SS officers shoulder through the crowded streets of Oktoberfest hunting the agents. True in every detail to the facts that have emerged, the relentless hunt heats up in a crucible of unremitting tension and betrayal. Never is the protagonist, Dieter Fahrlicht, entirely free of danger. Nor is the murderer revealed until the last scene.

Cooper A Death in Munich by David Hoof disturbed me to the point of making me squirm but kept me entrenched in the story. Hoof creates a spy novel that investigates the real life suicide Hitler's niece, Geli Raubal, which may have been a murder. He places the reader inside the mind of the spy investigating the suicide/murder and its links to Hitler. As the spy goes about his business, the reader feels immersed in his hesitation to trust even those who are supposed to be on his side. The reader is so inside the mind of the spy, the reader feels the spy's desire whether for comfortable shoes, a warm meal, or the desire to bed an attractive woman. Whether the reader believes history's version of the suicide of Geli Raubal or thinks she was murdered and it was staged as a suicide, the investigation Hoof concocts is a ride that will have the reader second-guessing their belief about Raubal's death. Novels based on historical events, including A Death in Munich, often leave the reader feeling a little discombobulated as their beliefs are challenged. A Death in Munich instills fear that Hitler is around every corner not only awaiting the spy investigating the suicide of Geli Raubal but also the reader for daring to read this possible alternative history...

Its a perspective many of us curious about but never get to ask for. It is some of the realest words I have read in my time. A quick an easy read, but not easy in the sense of understanding. Each writing makes you stop and think. I would recommend this to everyone... especially during this time of our society.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Irish castles, Vikings and Waterford Crsytal By Elizabeth Pavlovna My first “Castle” book by Gary McKraken got me hooked on castles. Aside from the intuitive appeal of castles that stems from reading fairy tales, watching movies and reading literature, I have found that castles serve as magnifying glasses in the development of countries. Whether left in ruins or restored to former glory, a castle is testament to historical events and to the changing of the guard as earls laid siege and either fell in defeat or rose in victory. In his latest book, McKraken introduces us to the castles of Ireland. True to his style, he gives you a snapshot of each castle's history, village, local attractions and a photo of the castle. Sad to learn that Waterford Crystal - yes, there is a Waterford Castle, is no more. I was particularly taken by this book because some of the castles mentioned have ties with the Vikings (Waterford being one,) The current TV series “Vikings” to which I have become totally addicted, is filmed in Ireland so it was good to have yet another tie in with the history of Ireland, castles and Vikings. I love this stuff. Does that make me a McKraken groupie or a castle geek?

I really enjoyed the style Le Fanu used to describe the moods and settings of such a dark mystery. The plot turns out to not be as scandalous for today's audiences, but it's a fun ride to the end. This is a must read for people who enjoy gothic literature. I am off to read his vampire novels next. (review written from my kindle).

Another good story by Le Fanu By WerePossum This book is a good mystery thriller. It is written with the same style as the other books I have read by Le Fanu. It has many interesting characters with excellent imagery created by the authors descriptions of both places and people. It is an easy read but well written. Synopsis: A rather isolated and unhappy household is plagued by the horrible murder of an unwanted guest. The story centers around the dark and brooding master of the house. The plot contains villainous characters, murder, and scandalous affairs.

A ghastly tale from the father of the Victorian ghost story By Patto No one creates an atmosphere of evil and foreboding as effectively as Le Fanu (1814-1873). A recluse after his wife's death, Le Fanu wrote into the night by the light of two candles. Perhaps the shadows that danced on his page fed the sense of supernatural dread so potent in his prose.Published in l895, the story looks back to the 1830's. The setting is a gloomy, neglected English mansion twenty some miles from the nearest town. The Honorable Richard Marston lives in genteel poverty with his family. The dissipations of his youth have left him much reduced. The decay of the house reflects the moral decay of its master, a man of violent passions and morose temperament. His daughter's governess is a beautiful Frenchwoman with fascinating ways - one of those dangerous beauties whose eyes develop a villainous gleam when no one's looking.Into this uncomfortable household Le Fanu introduces an unwelcome, self-invited guest: Marston's cousin, the fashionable and hugely wealthy baronet, Sir Wynston Berkley. This lively beau of fifty is destined to be hideously murdered in his room. How his death affects the lives and minds of the characters is the substance of a plot rich in psychological drama.Often the reader senses the truth behind the mystery, but this does nothing to lesson the impact of one disturbing scene after the next. Even the servants behave strangely in this strange story. But don't be afraid to plunge into Le Fanu's sinister world. This horrific tale of guilt and madness keeps the innocent safe from harm - and has a (relatively) happy outcome. I recommend it heartily - along with everything else Le Fanu wrote.
