The Rape of Lucrece (1594) is a narrative poem by William Shakespeare about the legendary Lucretia. In his previous narrative poem, Venus and Adonis (1593), Shakespeare had included a dedicatory letter to his patron, the Earl of Southampton, in which he promised to write a "graver work". Accordingly, The Rape of Lucrece has a serious tone throughout.

Rape and women's abuse and violence is a very present issue in Argentina, where I live, and this work has been recently performed by a Spanish actress in our local theatre. I haven't been able to see this show but this is what made me discover and read the original work by William Shakespare, which I hadn't heard of before.I strongly reccomend The Rape of Lucrece for those who love poetry, subtlety and a smart treatment of current issues.

Boasting some of the most beautiful countryside and villages in the county of the Vale Royal of England, Mid-Cheshire is one of the most picturesque areas in England. Great Budworth is often used as a backdrop for numerous film and TV productions, including most recently the BBC's Our Zoo, which charts the origins of Chester Zoo. The villages of Vale Royal have changed very little over time, with the building of modern estates the only real change. Included is Moulton, home to the Winsford salt workers, to Sandiway, birthplace of John Douglas, the architect who designed around 500 buildings in Cheshire. Whitegate village, home of the thirteenth-century Cistercian monastery, is included, then it's back to Hartford and the interesting history of its local public houses. Finally, the reader sees two of the smaller Vale Royal hamlets - Cotebrook and its larger neighbour Tarporley. Villages of Mid-Cheshire Through Time is a fully updated edition.

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. 4.5 stars... Outstanding travel guide By Paul Allaer Lonely Planet has published a travel guide on Israel, or to be more precise, on Israel and the "Palestinian Territories", for many years. They typically update the guide every 2 or 3 years, sometimes it's four years. The new 2015 edition updates the one that was issued in 2012."Lonely Planet: Israel and the Palestinian Territories" (2015 publications; 440 pages) starts off with a general 40 page "Plan Your Trip" Section, including the "top 20" of must-see/can't miss sites (with plenty of full-color pictures of all 20), and other general travel trips (such as the important "Crossing Borders" insights). Then we get to the `meat and potatoes' of this guide, a 300 page section which brings highlights of the various regions (Lonely Planet has divided it up in 10 regions, such as Jerusalem, Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Lower Galilee & Sea of Galilee, and later on The Dead Sea, The Negev, West Bank, and Petra). I read a number of those sections with great interest. Very impressed with the nitty-gritty details provided in this guide, down to the layout of various sites and even just individual buildings. The next section of the book is the 50 page "Understand", where the Lonely Planet editors try and give us a sense where things stand nowadays as between Israel and Palestine. Such a write-up could be disastrous but the editors did a good job finding a proper balance (even recommending `best films', and `best non-fiction' on the matter, such as the 2013 book "My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel" by Ari Schavit). The last section of the book is the 40 page "Survival Guide", with tons of uber-practical tips ("what to do in a missile or rocket attack", etc.). Bottom line: this book is contains TONS of great travel advice, and is richly illustrated in full-color pictures and maps.I had the great fortune of visiting Israel a few years ago. I can honestly say that it was one of the very best trips I have taken in my life. The historical sites are jaw-droppingly beautiful (make sure to visit the Dead Sea and nearby Masada, in addition to the sites in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem). I must also point out that I never felt unsafe in the slightest while there. (I did not visit Palestine, so I cannot vouch for the chapters on the West Bank and Petra.) This trip far exceeded all expectations on every level, and truly memorable. If you are preparing for a trip to Israel, you could do a lot worse than reading this particular travel guide. "Lonely Planet: Israel and the Palestinian Territories" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Except it was updated in June 2015, and failed to mention mineral beach Dead Sea is closed due to sink holes! Besides this, which lead me to Ein Gedi (awesome) and eventually Kalia beach, great guide and I will use this company again.

Roughing It (Annotated), by Mark Twain

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

58 of 60 people found the following review helpful. A fun read, and some history too By Matthew Taylor The genius of Mark Twain is that his work is still enjoyable, and funny, to this day. This book, originally published in 1871, is Twain's account of his journey from Missouri to Hawaii (called the Sandwich Islands in his day). He tells story after story of his adventures along the way, starting with the stagecoach ride on the Overland Stage Line to Carson City, Nevada, around 1861, and then telling of his stay in Nevada, then California, then his visit to Hawaii. The stories are informative, humorous, and all-around entertaining. He lampoons everybody he can--nobody is safe--including miners, pioneers (emigrants), politicians, Mormons, Blacks, American Indians, Chinese, newspaper reporters, "desperados", even himself on more than one occasion. Sometimes his stories are so outrageous that you wonder how much is true and how much is embellishment, or just outright fiction. Even he understands this by telling the reader on occasion that he has not made up a particular story, to demonstrate that truth is often stranger than fiction, but also to imply that he has taken liberties in other places in the book. (I wonder if the Mormon Church has ever banned this book for the things he says about them.) Even while he is being irreverent, however, he often demonstrates a sensitivity toward people, with an awareness of the situation of others that seems to me to be ahead of his time. For example, he has a chapter on the immigrant Chinese population in the West, and while he pokes fun at them in some respects, he spends the time detailing their lives and culture, as much as he could understand it, with a respect that was uncommon in his day.I bought a copy of this book years ago because I am a native Californian, and knew that there was some material in here about California in the early days (my copy is an old hardcover published by Grosset and Dunlap). As Twain states in his Prefatory: "...There is quite a good deal of information in this book. I regret this very much, but really it could not be helped." I enjoyed reading about the "old West" from an eye-witness, although most of it deals with Nevada, not California. While some of it sounded familiar, like something from any Western-genre movie, other things were like nothing I had ever heard of before, describing the "Wild West" from an original point of view. In that respect, this book is a great resource. This book falls short of five stars due to some minor flaws. He often digresses with text that is not only marginal to the point, but not even written by him, reprinting someone else's text. I skipped over some of that. He would also spend pages detailing coversations between other people that he could not have possibly remembered verbatim. While I understand that it was a common writing style of his day, it sounds like bad jounalism today. Those complaints aside, this is some great writing by Twain and some valuable American history.

37 of 39 people found the following review helpful. ROUGHING IT By Movie Explorer This "Mark Twain Project" paperback edition of ROUGHING IT is by far the best version for most readers. It is an excellent value. The 200 pages of "Explanatory Notes" at the end, add greatly to the modern reader's understanding of the 1860's "Wild West". The Early Western Mining Frontier comes vividly and colorfully to life, thanks to the Explanatory Notes' full illumination of the fascinating, often hilarious, eyewitness account of young Sam Clemens. The 21st century reader now sees the momentous impact of Samuel Colt's "Navy Revolver" on frontier society, fully comprehends a "Stamp Mill's" importance to the silver mines of the Comstock Lode, and is in complete agreement about the "thoroughbrace's" necessity to the Overland Stage traveler's comfort! This edition also contains all 304 first edition illustrations, another great aid allowing the modern reader to take a virtual walk into a vanished time.In the "Foreword" to this edition, Editor Harriet Elinor Smith notes, " The vernacular style of ROUGHING IT often seems surprisingly fresh to modern readers.....". I'm betting that many readers, younger ones especially, may approach this book with dread, only to become immersed in the rollicking adventure, and reach the end of ROUGHING IT with regret. The readers who return for a second, third or more reading, will discover many levels of depth to ROUGHING IT that will continue to entertain and educate reading after reading, year after year. From the "Foreword" to this edition, Editor Smith also observes, "Although readers have long been entertained by ROUGHING IT, it has gradually become part of all serious study of American culture. Students of history have come to rely on it for accurate information about the period, and it has played a major role in shaping the myth of the "Wild West".......No examination of American popular culture would be complete without Mark Twain's imaginative reminiscence of what it was like to be "on the ground in person"".So, if you are tired of all this bickering between the North and South, and feel it may be healthier to get away from the tensions, I hear tell there's a great silver strike in a new territory called "Nevada", near a place called "Virginia City". It's July 1861 and there is an Overland Stage westbound, St Joseph, Missouri to Carson City, Nevada Territory.Buckle on your Navy Colt and climb aboard!

31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Thank Goodness! By Eric Wilson Twain is a storyteller in the old-fashioned sense of the word. He spins his tales, weaves his lies, and draws us in with the skill of a magician. Dividing fact from fiction is not always easy in a work such as this. "Roughing It" has moments of obvious hyperbole, grounded by stories of true difficulty. Yet throughout, Twain finds a way to make us smile, even laugh out loud. We are amused by the eccentric characters and turns of events which he describe, and find that we are not so far different as we might like to think. The story follows Twain's journey as he travels west by stagecoach, train, wagon, horse, and ship. He meets surly frontiersmen, murderers, thieves, fortune-hunters, and men of ill-repute. Even here, he finds the good beneath the dirt. I especially enjoyed his anecdote of Scotty Briggs, a man trying to hire a minister to attend over his friend's funeral. Hilarious stuff! And so true to human nature.Throughout his account, Twain makes a habit of degrading his own work ethic, nudging us in the ribs as he highlights his aversion to labor. With this in mind, the title seems to be a tongue-in-cheek affair. In fact, I found his accounts much less rustic and more modern than expected. Sure, we can travel across the U.S. quicker these days, but the politics and economics of Twain's age parallel our own. Will we never learn? Isn't this the point of history, to avoid repeating our errors?Although criticized in his day for using coarse language and a working-class, Twain held to his guns and gave us some magnificent humor with which to swallow his pointed barbs. He was a master satirist, and even in a travelogue such as this, his views shine through. And thank goodness! A century and a half later, I'm thankful for his insights.

In "Birds on Elephant", all of the landscape is an allusion, and "we borrow or skim on [it], and our work becomes more fertile." Each poem in the collection either perches on a great work or a famed poet, or has first words that make a sentence if read downward-as in: Across and Down Frame your memory so I could see it tomorrow. Your place in mine has gone off with the tide. Memory is not quite the warmth that was once on me. So gather the particles and weigh in; it's not too dispersed. I will look up and fly the gossamer of you yesterday. Could you withstand the mind without the frame? See it against the sea. It will elevate with the sun. I'll just diminish tomorrow.

Review This is strong direct poetry with a distinct sense of "self" at the center. Writing is always a question of how much freedom a poet allows him/herself in a poem. This is part of the human discipline we call craft. Guevara knows how to exercise the spirit just right -- each gesture exactly the result of the lines before and after. He connects effortlessly to the reader as if we're friends, telling us his stories. He can be lyrically beautiful....Grace Cavalieri, Washington Independent Reviews

When most of us hear the words; book of poetry, we think of a master such as Shakespeare, but this present day author with his first book of poetry will most certainly hold your attention with his deep poetry. I have gone back and read the poems a second time, deriving and understanding more of of the author's intent. I especially liked reading the "first"word down for another meaning. These poems truly have deep content prompting the reader to really think and contemplate and that is the sign of a good author!

By Marian Gupana A beautiful collection of poems written with a heart and soul that tugs at your mind and eventually your consciousness. It is hard to find a favorite. All I know is that it makes you go back to the ones that cuddle and find dwelling in your four chambers that beat faster every time the words touch them like a gong. Ted Bernal Guevara is a master of his craft. He can summon words to represent what his mind dictates which ultimately we the readers can experience. I would find myself soaring with his thoughts to really experience the flight. For poem lovers, this book is a gift. Acquire it, read, discover, savor, and find joy!

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. The book misses the best features on the coast (Pt. Lobos, Carmel, Muir Woods, Salt Point State Park, Big Basin, Fort Ross) By Tom Brody PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAYS ROAD TRIPS in the LONELY PLANET series is a 128 page guidebook on tourist spots in California. If you want to find great taco stands, this is the book for you. But if you want to find awesome features in California's natural landscape, then this is not the book for you.NICE THINGS ABOUT THIS BOOK. It is possible to say some nice things about this small book, but the book has so many weaknesses and omissions, that it can reasonably be concluded that this "book" should never have been published. The nice things include the photography. The nice photographs show Bixby Bridge (front cover photo, page 4) located on the legendary ROUTE ONE, Golden Gate Bridge (pages 8,16), and redwood trees (pages 9, 28, 33, 35, 72).It is nice that this book describes POINT CABRILLO LIGHTHOUSE (pages 66 and 69), and LARRUPIN CAFE (page 71). The book fails to point out that what is mounted on the ceiling of Larrupin Café is a sculpture by famed artist, Dale Chihuly. Larrupin Café is in the town of Trinidad, CA, a town with little off-shore islands and sea stacks that have been featured in photography books.MISLEADING BOOK TITLE. The title of the book is misleading. The title is, "Pacific Coast Highways Road Trips." First of all, this book is only about California. There is nothing about Oregon or Washington. The last time I looked at the map, the Pacific Coast included Oregon and Washington. Second, the book has too much emphasis on cities and the restaurants and hotels that are found in cities. Third, the book has a rude and dismissive attitude about many of the best things on California coast, namely, Point Reyes, Muir Woods, Point Lobos, Big Basin State Park, Fort Ross, and Salt Point State Park. The book has a chapter called, "Disneyland and Orange County." But please note the following. It is not the case that a conventional "road trip" takes the form of a visit to Disneyland. The way the term "road trip" is used in the English language, conventionally means a long drive through the countryside, where the road winds and weaves here and there, and where one can park for an hour here and there to view rivers, cliffs, waterfalls, wild animals, or to visit an artists' colony. On the California coast, artists' colonies can be found at Davenport (pottery) which is near Santa Cruz, and at the town of Mendocino. But the notion that including info on Disneyland and various urban beaches in Orange County and Los Angeles County does not really make sense, at least, not in a book called, "Pacific Coast Highways Road Trips."INAPPROPRIATE TREATMENT OF POINT REYES, MUIR WOODS, and PELICAN INN. Pt. Reyes is described on page 24. What is written is, "Detour: Point Reyes." How inappropriate and rude to characterize Pt. Reyes as a mere "detour." Pt. Reyes is described as, "a rough-hewn beauty." This is incorrect. It is not the case that Pt. Reyes is "rough-hewn." Any visitor can see that Pt. Reyes has smoothly undulating cliffs that go up, down, up, down, up, down, just like a smooth sine wave. The undulating cliffs are at Drake's Bay. An attraction close to Pt. Reyes is MUIR WOODS NATIONAL MONUMENT, located just off from the legendary ROUTE ONE. But Muir Woods is not mentioned anywhere in this book, and it is not in the index. I have been to Muir Woods on about 25 occasions. Muir Woods is located in a valley, with a popular gift shop, book store, and cafe. Sprouting off from the main trail in the valley, are several other trails that lead you to higher elevation spots on the flanks of Mt. Tamalpais, where one can see the Pacific Ocean. Every day, for the past several decades, a dozen buses pull into Muir Woods, filled with tourists from India, China, Japan, Germany, as well as from various parts of the US. Even a book called "Coastline California for Dummies" would be expected to include Muir Woods. But Muir Woods is not here. The book fails to mention ARMSTRONG WOODS STATE PARK, located a short drive inland from the coastal village of Jenner. Armstrong Woods State Park is located in the town of Guerneville. Guerneville has an unexpectedly domestic beach called, JOHNSON BEACH. Johnson Beach is located on the shore of the Russian River, and it is a place to rent pedal boats. It is a good place for toddlers and kids, and for adults who don't mind lounging (while drinking lots of cheap beer) amidst the throngs of happy waders, swimmers, and boaters. Okay, this aspect of Johnson Beach is not one of the "great spots" of California, on the other hand, JOHNSON BEACH does have an annual jazz festival, that is worthy of visiting by way of a multi-hour drive. Armstrong Woods is a better place to see redwood trees than Muir Woods. At Muir Woods, the redwood trees are fenced off, and many are located on steep slopes of the valley, but at Armstrong Woods, the redwood trees are on a flat plain, and you can walk freely among them. If you climb over the wooden barriers at Muir Woods, the rangers will pounce on you, and tell you to get back on the trail. The book also fails to mention PELICAN INN, which has Tudor-style architecture, several bedroom suites with 17th century furniture, a restaurant, and a pub with British beers on tap and a dart board. Pelican Inn is located on the legendary ROUTE ONE. I have no idea why the authors include a paragraph about LUCKY PENNY, a pizza joint in Santa Barbara, when they could have devoted a paragraph (no, an entire page) to PELICAN INN located near Muir Woods. PELICAN INN is a leisurely 5 minute drive from Muir Woods.INAPPROPRIATE TREATMENT OF POINT LOBOS, BIG BASIN STATE PARK, and CARMEL. The chapter on the Central Coast (pages 74-81) and the chapter on Big Sur (pages 37-41) are where the reader might expect to find information on POINT LOBOS, BIG BASIN STATE PARK, and CARMEL. Carmel is just south of Monterrey, and Point Lobos is just south of Carmel. Carmel is the most charming town in all of California. Carmel is more charming than Julian, which is located near Anza Borrego State Park. Carmel may even be more charming than Sausalito, which is located just north of Golden Gate Bridge (the charm of Sausalito is dampened by the hoards of tourists). But the book does not mention Carmel. Carmel is located on the legendary ROUTE ONE. In fact, Simon and Garfunkel have recorded a song about Carmel. The title of the song is, "Cloudy." POINT LOBOS is arguably the most beautiful spot on the entire Pacific coast, with the exception of the view from Fort Barry just north of Golden Gate Bridge, and with the exception of the undulating cliffs at Drakes Bay located at Point Reyes. But there is no mention of Point Lobos, which is also located on the legendary ROUTE ONE.BIG BASIN STATE PARK is located just north of Santa Cruz, and it features a five mile trail from the ocean that hugs the wall of a long valley, and then leads you through a shaded trail that brings you higher and higher until you reach BERRY FALLS. Berry Falls is an industrial-grade waterfall, something that Ansel Adams might have photographed. This five mile trail continues uphill for another five miles, until it reaches a large visitor's center. This visitor's center can be reached from Los Gatos, but the road from Los Gatos to Big Basin State Park is tedious and unendingly winding. Thus, if you want a more scenic and stress-free way to a trail head in Big Basin State Park, I recommend parking at the beach terminus (and not parking at the main visitor's center). The hiker at Big Basin State Park, and at nearby Butano State Park, will enjoy the many, many bright yellow banana slugs. Although a banana slug is less dramatic than, for example, one of the whales that can be seen from Fort Ross, Fort Bragg, or from Salt Point State Park, it is still the case that these bright yellow animals are a memorable thing to examine. Please note that the mascot of University of California at Santa Cruz is the banana slug.INAPPROPRIATE TREATMENT OF SALT POINT STATE PARK AND FORT ROSS. Page 25 informs the reader that, "Bodega Bay and Jenner's seal colony are the last things you'll see before Pacific Coast Highway dives into California's great rural northlands (page 25). But this is completely incorrect. The authors forget that FORT ROSS is located just north of Jenner, and that Fort Ross is a restored historical fort, which is filled with authentic hunting and fishing gear. Fort Ross was the hub of the Russian settlements from 1812 to 1842. The employees are dressed in colonial clothes, and on weekends, they set off a real cannon that goes, "Boom!" Fort Ross is truly an elegant facility, and any visitor can see that the State of California has invested a continual stream of money into keeping it in good condition. Pathways at Fort Ross take you down to the shore, where you can meander among tidal pools, and admire hundreds of cala lilies. The book also rudely ignores SALT POINT STATE PARK, which is noted for its awesome stone formations called, "tafoni." Tafoni resembles an other-worldly city from an alien planet. Other stone formations in this park include arches, and colorful layered rock formations that sometimes have a conformation like a multi-pointed star. Salt Point State Park is a haven for abalone divers. Salt Point State Park is also the best place on the Pacific coast for viewing seals, in part, because of the many viewing areas available in this 5-mile long park. How rude and inappropriate it is, that this book describes a cheap burrito stand (La Taqueria) in San Francisco, and a cheap burrito stand (Taco Loco) in Laguna beach, but that the book dismisses Fort Ross and Salt Point State Park as things that do not exist. How rude.

Kennedy Maybe it's the ignorance of a Northeasterner, but I expected a guidebook titled "Pacific Coast Highway Road Trips" to span the West Coast from California to Washington. Instead, this is a California-only guidebook. I wish there was some indication of that on the cover. Now that I've googled the term, I see that it refers specifically to parts of Routes 1 and 101 in California. I'm not taking off stars for that... just considering myself as having learned something. The reason I give the guidebook just 3 stars is that I found it to be more of a guidebook for city and amusement trips. While beaches and the "big tree" forests are in here, San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles are all covered in more depth. Disneyland is treated ride by ride. If it's restaurants, wineries and nightlife you want, there are copious listings. But if you want to take a walk somewhere that isn't a major hike, you don't get much direction. For example, in the Central Coast section, I came across this sentence: "For more hiking with ocean views, head to Montana de Oro State Park, not far away." I love coast walks and I would have liked better directions here. Also, there is often only one suggestion for a place to sleep in or near a state or national park. You certainly can't rely on this guide alone.I know that it is Lonely Planet's template to provide a list of highlights up front and then go into each region in more depth in separate chapters; here, the road trips are divided into four regions. Generally, this system works. But in this brief guidebook, I found it annoying to find the information broken up when it would have been more convenient and less confusing to have it all together in one place. I kept having to page back and forth to get the full story.

Information is very abbreviated. Finding a good book on PCH has been a challenge. I now have two and neither really fits the bill.

England in the 1800's By Patricia Covill An excellent piece of work depicting an era where people were described by their character - not physical attributes; where honor and integrity were paramont considerations in personal as well as business matters.

Interesting OLD BOOK By Sandi Lee Craig Several members of my husband's family had been named from this book [early 1830's] and I have always wanted to read it. Appreciate that it was back into print. Slow reading - as writing and telling a story has certainly changed over the almost 170 years since original published. Very Interesting! At least in our family it historically was REALLY READ!

I have come to love the town of Pinecraft and would love to visit it in person one day. I like the map at the front of the book that shows you where everything is located and give you a good visual of the town.Emma and Jay both find themselves in a spot in life that they never dreamed of experiencing. Through common circumstances, they find that they have much they can talk about and many instances where they can relate to each other. Who would ever imagine that a pizza-loving hound would be the one playing matchmaker!Shelley Shepard Gray does a wonderful job capturing the reader from the very beginning. I have not read a book by her that I have disliked. She has captured my full attention from the beginning and I find that I have a hard time putting down her books. I do like that her books aren't as many pages because then I can read it as a reward in between doing chores (don't judge me!). By the end of my chore time, I've completed the entire book as a reward for mopping and cleaning. So thank you, Shelley Shepard Gray for giving me something to look forward to and for testing my ability to "just say no" when all I really want to do is read one more chapter before picking up that mop! I'm so glad that there's one more book in this series. I just don't want to say goodbye yet! Oh and the pictures of Pinecraft bring this story to life. Such a wonderful idea to include those._________________I received this book free from Avon Inspire and Litfuse Publicity Group in exchange for my honest opinion of this book.

But, what happens when one beagle named Frankie decides to take matters into his own hands, ruins the pizza that another family has ordered and starts a chain of events that will either make you want to put him in the corner, give him tons of treats or just plain smile. What happens when the mother of three young girls meets the father of three boys? Could it be fate or pizza that brought them together? Emma Keim is brokenhearted after losing her husband Sanford. Jay Hilty decided to move to Pinecraft and start an organic farm business. What could they have in common and would they ever be more than friends? As the disastrous lunch turns into chaos you meet Lena, Annie and Mandy her three adorable girls and William, Mark and Ben Jay’s sons. Amazing how no one got angry and everyone took what Frankie did in stride. Ben, the oldest seemed kind, good natured and when he meets Tricia the niece the woman who runs the local inn, things start to sizzle but will they remain within the limits and rules of the Amish way of thinking? As Ben and Tricia get to know each other both families become concerned and her aunt Beverly even voices her opinion about her behavior in public. Sometimes these viewpoints are accepted and other times even Tricia speaks out in her own defense. Knowing that she left home to feel safe, be her own person and getting away from the bullies in her old school, Tricia took on a job at the inn and seems to be thriving.Beverly Overholt is Tricia’s aunt and although she is outspoken she means well. Added in her unusual love/hate relationship with the inn’s owner named Eric who is dealing with selling his home in another state but whom Beverly wishes would return. Can you smell her great cookies, baked pies and delicious desserts, as her main goal is to cook up and bake up storm-keeping guests happy? When Emma and Jay become friends and she decides to bring over food for his family for supper you can feel the bond being formed, the kids or kinner as they say it getting along and it’s so gratifying that they manage to find a common ground right away. But, William is the youngest and Jay feels that he is neglecting his studies and somehow he manages to admit that to Emma who jumps right in with a great solution. However, when her parents and Sanford’s learn about her friendship opinions are stated and Emma needs to reflect on their voices but isn’t she entitled to be happy?Ben and Tricia formed a bond so close and after going on their dates with them, seeing how they feel about each other the author decides to unite them and allows them to become engaged. But, parents are strict and hers are no different and when Kathleen her mother shows up and her father, things take on a different turn. They can demand she return home. They can deny her the right to marry Ben. They can decide to become more open minded or they can not be apart of the wedding as she decided to marry in Pinecraft at the Inn and the decision was hers and Ben’s alone. As they set the date and decide on their future Jay and Emma have their own choices to make. Emma is kind, always trying to help others and make the lives of so many easier but my favorite character is Annie and her interaction with Jay and the incident with the frog is great as I used to hunt for frogs with my nephew when he was just Annie’s age. Family dinners, lunches, outings and finally a real date for Emma and Jay but how will everyone react? Thinking about Sanford and Evelyn his wife they share their pasts, their love for their spouses and their hopes for their future but will it be together? This is a heartwarming story that will make you smile, bring tears of sadness and joy to your heart and teach you much about the Amish ways. I really love that they enjoy my favorite food pizza and that when Frankie does something at Ben and Tricia’s wedding that Jay comes to his defense. Emma at times overreacts and wants everything to be perfect but life doesn’t run or fair that way. So, what will happen between Emma and Jay? Will 6 make an even number plus two and Frankie in one house? Will they decide to take it slow or not at all? Will their be another wedding at the inn or will they just be friends? As Beverly and Eric find their way together at the wedding at least for a little while, Emma and Jay have to decide on their futures and of course what to do with Frankie! A story about new beginnings, new loves, family values, loyalties and feelings of betrayal that need to be overcome. As Tricia and Ben form a lasting love and bond will the rest of the kids feel the same? “ It takes both sunshine and rain to make a rainbow,” an Amish proverb and it definitely will bring sunshine and joy into your life if you read this book and join Emma, Jay, Ben and Tricia on their journey to happiness. The pictures at the end bring the town to life and of course Frankie who made it all happen.

This new one all about the lives of the Amish in Pinecraft and the Orange Blossom Inn in particular is amazing! I've read the others in this series(this is book three) and A Wedding at the Orange Blossom Inn is a charming and funny addition to the series. I loved meeting our two families and learning about their background. I also adore Frankie.Frankie is a beagle with a tendency towards trouble. He has a voracious appetite for pizza and wedding cake(oh yes I said wedding cake). He also is so cute and loveable that no one can be mad at him for long. You're going to love meeting Emma and her three young daughters as well as Jay and his three sons(one grown, one teenage, and one young still). Both are widowed and not looking for love. But love finds them anyway in Pinecraft! Can Emma break free from what her parents and in laws expect of her? Can Jay let himself see it's okay to love again? And who will get married first, Jay or his oldest son? So much romance and fun going on in this book. I literally sat down to read it and then it was all over! Definitely not long enough! I can't wait for the next book to come out!I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not compensated in any other way for this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

By JP "Lost Cincinnati" brings together stories of Cincinnati-that-was, painting a picture of a city with a legacy of entrepreneurs, artists, and, great promise.Suess collects a number of points-of-interests and their stories that were previously only available by sitting through disparate lectures or searching through obscure archives. He has organized them by topics of interest (disasters, transportation, etc...) allowing the reader to approach "Lost Cincinnati" as a kind-of reference book or as a cover-to-cover narrative. The writing is accessible yet informative which makes this travel through history interesting and fun. Every city would be well-served with a book this compelling.

It shows how colorful our history has been. It also shows the high cost that we have paid for "progress." Unfortunately, the lack of appreciation for our architectural heritage is not confined to our past. It is going on all around us right now! There are plans under way to demolish historic buildings. We have to take a stand concerning our architectural heritage! If you say nothing, then you are guilty of allowing historic buildings to join the long list of what Cincinnati has lost. Thank you to Jeff Suess for educating us. I hope he writes a volume 2 because I suspect that there is lots more to tell.

LeFanu, despite fame in Victorian times, has mostly fallen off the radar of modern readers. His superlative "Uncle Silas" is clear evidence as to why anyone who loves a good yarn will be immediately drawn in by his considerable gifts. This novel has a well-modulated dark atmosphere, clearly drawn and fully human characters and a superb plot. The titular Silas is the uncle of our heroine Maud Ruthyn, who becomes the ward of her mysterious uncle upon her father's death. Silas has an unsavory reputation, having once been accused of murdering a man to whom he owed a gambling debt, but he has, by the time Maud first meets him, apparently repented and found religion. She goes to his home willingly, quickly befriends his saucy daughter Milly and is, for the most part, happy in her new surroundings. The plot thickens from there, and without giving away important details, the reader should know that LeFanu lets loose with a ripping good story that ends most satisfactorily and with some wonderful twists.LeFanu is a skilled writer at the apex of his powers and an astute observer of the human condition. Some of the more telling lines exhibiting his gifts include:" . . . that lady has a certain spirit of opposition within her, and to disclose a small wish of any sort was generally, if it lay in her power, to prevent its accomplishment.""Already I was sorry to lose him. So soon we begin to make a property of what pleases us.""People grow to be friends by liking, Madame, and liking comes of itself, not by bargain.""She had received a note from Papa. He had had the impudence to forgive HER for HIS impertinence.""In very early youth, we do not appreciate the restraints which act upon malignity, or know how effectually fear protects us where conscience is wanting.""One of the terrible dislocations of our habits of mind respecting the dead is that our earthly future is robbed of them, and we thrown exclusively upon retrospect."" 'The world,' he resumed after a short pause, 'has no faith in any man's conversion; it never forgets what he was, it never believes him anything better, it is an inexorable and stupid judge.' "" . . . I had felt, in the whirl and horror of my mind, on the very point of submitting, just as nervous people are said to throw themselves over precipices through sheer dread of falling."Admirers of Wilkie Collins, Thomas Hardy and, to a lesser degree, of Charles Dickens will find much to please them in the classic "Uncle Silas."

Eighteen-year-old Maude, whose mother is dead, has been raised by her wealthy father, an adherent to a peculiar Scandinavian science religion. There are dark rumors afoot about the character of Maude's father's brother, the mysterious Uncle Silas, into whose guardianship Maude is entrusted at her father's death. Maude is the only thing standing between the money she will inherit from her father (when she comes of age) and Silas' considerable debt. Laudanum addiction, poison, big old houses with uninhabited wings, a creepy cousin (Silas' son), and an evil French governess: if you like gothic novels, this one's got it all.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Everything a gothic novel should be By A Customer "Uncle Silas" has all the ingredients of a great gothic novel: creepy atmosphere, slowly building tension, a sympathetic heroine, and villains you really hate. Don't trust the blurb on the back cover of the Penguin edition, however; it talks about spirits, perception vs. reality, and the like. This is NOT a ghost story. The evil depicted is all too human, which accounts for the story's disturbing effect. A great read.

“The Little Book of Breakup Poems” is a collection of poems written during the midst of a college breakup that left the author with an urge to write down all of the poetry that had collected on her laptop. With a subtle self-awareness, these poems document the splitting apart of two young people, mixing the silly, sad, serious, and sentimental in a way that captures the amalgam of emotions involved in breakups. Lizzie Ford connects readers to the unique brand of hysteria and humor that anyone who has gone through a breakup will remember with clarity, knowing that, as the author discovers, breaking up is sometimes the best thing one can do.

This little book is a comfort and a joy, a happiness and sadness that heals a broken heart. It has humor, heart and a hearty splash of realness that is difficult to find in new writers. Lizzie Ford reminds us that young women are allowed to hurt and are allowed to cry, but at the same time to remember what goes beyond the man that broke your heart, even picking yourself back up when it feels impossible.Thank you Lizzie, you healed me and I promise that this book will be on all my girlfriends shelves for the times when they need me and I can't be there, but you will.
