The Shepherd's Calendar, by James Hogg

Review

An important and addictively readable addition to the Scottish canon.

(Christopher Harvie Notes and Queries)

The reader is not being treated to a quaint display of an outmoded lifestyle, but privileged with glimpses of a community possessed of special knowledge and internal laws. Hogg's shepherds are far removed from those of Virgil or Spenser, while even Wordsworth's Michael seems remote from the narrator who can describe the destruction of '12 scores of excellent ewes' with such calmness and compassion: 'when the snow went away they were discovered all lying dead with their heads one way as if a flock of sheep had dropped dead going from the washing'

(Fiona Stafford Review of English Studies)

The stories are about storms, sheep, lairds, about farmers with designs on their servant girls, as in one of the most memorable, 'Tibby Hyslop's Dream', where a pious, winsome lass, prophesied over by a second-sighted, 'unco parabolical' great-aunt, copes with such designs - and the farmer in this case comes to one of Hogg's suicidal ends.

Mack), Edinburgh University Press, 2002, 287pp. This book is a paperback re-issue from the 1995 Stirling / South Carolina edition of the `Collected Works of James Hogg', and the overall package which it contains is almost too generous: thirteen short stories written by one of the world's greatest masters of the form, a literary introduction, an essay on the development of `The Shepherd's Calendar', a select bibliography, a chronology of Hogg's life (compiled by Gillian Hughes), extensive end-notes, and a six hundred word Scots / English glossary. The apparatus of any such work is of great value, but especially so in Hogg's case, as, with this book, we are getting for the first time in history, access to the stories as he actually wrote them, without the bowdlerising hand of editors. But of course, the book's real treasure lies in the stories themselves. They are divided into classes (although as the text now stands, enumerations are not always consecutive); the first deals with storms, the second with `Deaths, Judgements and Providences', the next few with dogs, lasses, and general anecdotes; then comes `Dreams and Apparitions', and the last focuses on `Fairies, Brownies and Witches' (a forte of Hogg's). The largest class, by a narrow margin, is `Dreams and Apparitions'. This, indeed, is hardly surprising given what most readers will already know about Hogg's deep and, for his time, remarkably modern insights in to the human psyche. But every section exhibits a charm and genius of its own. The book opens at a high level of excellence, with Hogg narrating a veritable meteorological history of bygone times, including a tale about a storm which he himself endured as a shepherd. In the next class, 'Robb Dodds' is a tale from oral tradition, narrated by the shepherd, Auld Andrew, of an unresolved mystery which has at its roots the cruelty of Tam Linton, and which ends in horror and retribution. Cruelty, and the vengeance it calls forth, is also at the heart of `Mr Adamson of Laverhope'; this takes as its subject matter a farmer whose egregious behaviour apparently results in his being struck by lightning, whereupon his bowels gush out, and his corpse collapses into what seems to be a ready-made grave. The `General anecdotes' section, though of deep interest, lessens the dramatic intensity of the collection with some interesting diversions, but here it is a comedy, `The Lasses', dealing with `Window Wat''s and `Jock the Jewel''s attempts to win the hand of the `bonny Snaw-fleck', that reveals best the complex machinery of Hogg's narrative technique. It is fitting that the next two tales, which are probably the most major, `George Dobson's Expedition to Hell and The Soutars of Selkirk', and `Tibby Hislop's Dream', come right at the centre of the collection. The former, indeed, is two tales in one, the linking device being the name of the central character. It refers to two different people, but since the blurring of identities (shades of `The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner'), is a central concern of the tale's latter part, this form of artifice is again especially appropriate. In the opening, which draws upon an eerie tradition of the descent into the underworld, the real and supernatural realms impinge upon each other in a way that suggests the pervasive power of the latter; in `The Soutars', a contorted conundrum of events revolves around the prejudices contained in old Scots songs. `Tibby Hislop's Dream', which for me contains echoes of Henryson and Lindsay, deals with the gory end of the corrupt `Gibby Gledger', whose innards are devoured by birds. It is a `just-deserts' tale, par excellence, but read it for yourself. `Smithy Cracks', although it is suitably ghoulish, eerie and mysterious, is a rare tale in which the rational interpretation of events wins out over the natural assumptions of folklore. But `The Laird of Cassway', `Mary Burnet' and `The Witches of Traquair' decidedly place the emphasis again upon supernatural events. In `The Laird', the ancient tale of mortal enmity between two brothers, mingles with the Scottish witch-story; in `Mary Burnet', vengeance is visited upon a seducing rogue in a parable which is heavily reliant on the Scots ballads; and `The Witches', an old Catholic morality tale, complete with allegorical characters, uses genuine historical figures (George Wishart and David Beaton appear) to `earth' the fantastic firmly in Scottish soil. The climax of the collection, however, comes with the brilliant `The Brownie of the Black Haggs'. For those who do not know it already; it concerns itself, superficially at least, with the monomaniac obsessions of Lady Wheelhope, whose implacable hatred for an interfering brownie, the `evil Merodach of Babylon', knows no bounds. But in its sub-text, it explores sado-masochistic sexuality, in quasi-biblical language, and combines all of this with copious allusions to Scottish history and shepherd's lore. Given this brief for a creative endeavour, any potential short-story writer could be forgiven for thinking it an impossible task, but, evidently, not so the great `Ettrick Shepherd'. Hogg's use of Scots has been analysed before now, but it might be well to end with a reference to this feature of his writing. Hogg's Scots dialogue is of an exceptionally accomplished order, and there's no doubt that everything here is the `real MacKay'. His imprecatory registers are, by far and away, the most powerful, (although everything is authentic and natural). As Wattie says to Bessie, in a famous phrase: `... but nipping an' scarting are Scots folk's wooing'!. If ever you wanted `infinite riches' in a little book, James Hogg's `The Shepherd's Calendar' certainly comes close to containing them.

The poems cover a range of subjects related to music, organized into three sections: "The Honey Thing," (relationships); "Mood Alteration," (substance abuse and shifts in emotion); and "Write a Song About It," (the music business and its relationship to other aspects of life). Each poem also departs in unique ways from rock and roll, its lyrics and history.

Case's book of poems is witty, clever and funny. The poems are organized into three sections: "The Honey Thing," "Mood Alteration," and "Write a Song About It". Here we see musically facts wounderfully turned into poetic verses. This collection of poems reminds us how important music is in creating our feelings and memories. There wasn't a weak poem in this collection. "Elvis Presley's Hips & Mick Jagger's Lips" is a well-kept secret in the poetry scene.

The Waste Land is a 434-line modernist poem by T. S. Eliot published in 1922. It has been called one of the most important poems of the 20th century. Despite the poem's obscurity—its shifts between satire and prophecy, its abrupt and unannounced changes of speaker, location and time, its elegiac but intimidating summoning up of a vast and dissonant range of cultures and literatures—the poem has become a familiar touchstone of modern literature. Among its famous phrases are "April is the cruellest month," "I will show you fear in a handful of dust," and the mantra in the Sanskrit language "Shantih shantih shantih." Eliot probably worked on what was to become The Waste Land for several years preceding its first publication in 1922. In a letter to New York lawyer and patron of modernism John Quinn dated 9 May 1921, Eliot wrote that he had "a long poem in mind and partly on paper which I am wishful to finish."

The Waste Land, by T. S. Eliot

Review    • "The poem succeeds -- as it brilliantly does -- by virtue of its incoherence, not of its plan; by virtue of its ambiguities, not of its explanations... We accept The Waste Land as one of the most moving and original poems of our time." --Conrad Aiken, New Republic, 1923

About the Author Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St Louis, Missouri, in 1888. He came to England in 1914 and published his first book of poems in 1917. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. Eliot died in 1965.

28 of 30 people found the following review helpful. a good edition of Eliot for the casual reader By Enlightenment Man I found this edition by Penguin to be very useful for a casual reading. The notes on the poems, in particular "the Waste Land," are detailed enough to give the reader a perception of Eliot's vast literary knowledge and its effect on his poems. However, the notes are inadequate if your purpose is to deeply understand the background of Eliot's complex and difficult poetry. So if you are looking for deep insights, I would recommend the Norton Critical Edition. For the normal reader, this is satisfying and straightforward.

21 of 24 people found the following review helpful. What the thunder said . . . By A Customer T.S. Eliot wrote "The Waste Land" against the backdrop of a world gone mad-- searching for reason inside chaos, and striving to build an ark of words by which future generations could learn what had gone before, T.S. Eliot explores that greatest of human melancholy-- disillusionment. This is a difficult poem, but one well-worth exploring to its fullest. The inherent rhythms of Eliot's speech, the delightful, though sometimes obscure, allusions, and intricate word-craft, create an atmosphere of civilization on the edge-- in danger of forgetting its past, and therefore repeating it. In the end, only the poet is left, to admonish the world to peace, to preserve the ruins of the old life, and to ensure that future generations benefit from the disillusions of the past."Prufrock" is perhaps the best "mid-life crisis" poem ever written. In witty, though self-deprecating and often downright bitter, tones, Eliot goes on a madcap but infinitely somber romp through the human mind. This is a poem of contradictions, of repression, of human fear, and human self-defeat. Technically, "Prufrock" is brilliant, with a varied and intricate style suited to the themes of madness, love, and self-doubt.Buy this. You won't regret it. If you're an Eliot fan, you probably have it anyway. If you're not, you will be when you put it down.

12 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Not to be missed By Paul Stilwell I remember when I first read through some parts of 'The Wasteland' when I was a teenager. I basically didn't get any of it, yet there was something that vividly burned itself in my mind. All that I could remember from the first reading was the departure of some nymphs and wind crossing brown land, a slimy rat's belly dragging across a bank, and some sailor on the bed of the sea being picked apart by a deep sea current. But it wasn't just the images that stuck; there was something else. What stuck, I think, is the 'visionary' quality some people refer to as being 'cinematic'. The writing in the poem has a way of getting you to view a whole assortment of apparently disconnected events as though you were a disembodied spirit -unnoticed, but there, listening in. I've read the poem quite a few more times since then, and you begin to notice the overall structure. When the poem gets to the last part, 'What the Thunder said', there is this transition that is at once magnificent, sobering, yet somewhat hallucinatory and disturbing. This part always gets me:"Who is the third who walks always beside you? When I count, there are only you and I togetherBut when I look ahead up the white roadThere is always another walking beside youGliding wrapt in a brown mantle, hoodedI do not know whether a man or a woman-But who is that on the other side of you?"'The Wasteland' is perhaps the least 'telly' of Eliot's work. I've come to appreciate more and more 'The Four Quartets' over any other of his works, but 'The Wasteland' remains the one poem of his that is the most tight, the one that gets across its business to the reader superbly, showing and not telling, while at the same time being the work of art that was the departure from the 'antiquated' verse, a whole new aesthetic that was no mere aesthetic, but was totally viable and worked and was vivid. While many of the other poems in this book are well worth reading, I'm not sure 'The Love Song of Prufrock' really belongs. I don't understand how that one always gets bundled into books containing 'The Wasteland' and Eliot's other poems, which are far superior to 'Prufrock'. To my mind 'Prufrock' has not held up over the years. It marks the experiment that Eliot was to take over the years to betterment. It had its glory in his day, but I can't help feeling the poem is really not all that good.

MacConnell It's rare that I'll take the time to sit down and read another novelist's work, mainly because I might end up facing the dreaded prospect of discovering just how lacking my own work is by comparison.Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened with Mr. Hourigan's "Kiss Me, Genius Boy".The characters are three-dimensional, instantly like-able and (unlike 99% of all characters written in novels today) act in ways that are both believable and delightfully unpredictable. It's clear that a great deal of work has gone into crafting the story line, and I eagerly await Mr. Hourigan's next work.

Funny, honest page turner By Nicola Gray The first installment of this entertaining novel follows the adventures past, present and future of Joshua Rivers - arrogant, dissatisfied and anti-authoritarian, yet surprisingly endearing as we follow him in his quest to find love, both of the romantic and more temporary kind. This is a far more polished novel than one generally expects from a first time novelist. It is also a page turner, very funny and unusually honest and frank, particularly the childhood and teenage scenes, which are bound to strike a chord with all readers.Mr Hourigan has a knack of turning the mundane into the fascinating or entertaining, whether it be place or people. The novel is populated with all kinds of unique characters, but to my mind it is the character of Lily who really steals the show. A nymphomaniacal exploiter of men and women, Lily is a deeply interesting, entertaining and wild character who lights up every page she is on.I highly recommend this novel to anyone who likes to be surprised when they read, to chuckle and to cringe, and to feel you are in the hands of a writer who will take you where you want to go.

Kept me reading - great characters By LEA KOUKOUTSIS With work and everything that I want to/ must do outside of work, I find it hard to sit down and concentrate and be absorbed by a book the way it was so easy to do so when I was younger.I found I didn't have that problem at all with this book. The characters are all alive and vibrant (especially Lilian) and I can relate to Joshua's feelings and thoughts about his surroundings, the people around him and the process of growing up.Having the story set in Melbourne is also entertaining as that's where I live and so feels of immediate relevancy to me.Maybe the story of a genius growing up in Rosebud doesn't seem on the surface like it would be that entertaining, but it really really is.Well worth a read.

A great piece of reflective and heartfelt writing The saying By Charles DC Tran A great piece of reflective and heartfelt writingThe saying, “ a mother’s love is more than words can describe, however, “Me Yeu” poetry book has proven otherwise. The poems are heartfelt and sincere with the poet’s careful choice of words, she was able to describe beautifully the extraordinary nurturing, care and love from her mother. What makes this book so special is the poet’s expression of her never ending gratitude and deep understanding of her mother’s love for her.The style of the poem is simple and sweet, enriched with love; a natural love and passion for her roots and country and a deep love and affection for her family.Although the poems are youthful and modern, they provided strangely a pleasant freshness and gentleness throughout, almost like a whispering breeze to blow your sorrows away.A love between parent and child is sacred and precious and Hoa Dam has beautifully blessed her mother with this love as in this verse:-“Today, I miss you so muchMy natural and endless lovefor you is always within me.A love, so unconditional that goes beyond this universe. So innocent, pure and will never fade.”The poet’s words of boundless love for her mother sent through these verses of mixed rhythm adds a modern twist to the whole poetry book.A mother’s love as depicted in the book is utterly selfless with the poet illustrating her life with her mother from when she was little to reaching adulthood.A touching tribute to the poet’s mother and a great piece of reflective writing!I wish Hoa Dam every success in the future and to progress further afield with her poetry writing and to accomplish more, like the saying ”to turn one beautiful flower into a bed of even more beautiful ones!” I look forward to reading more of your lovely poems!Charles D C TranLondon 4th October 2015

Reyna In DRIFTER, the natural world in all its bounty takes center stage: forests, canyons, rivers, the heavens, critter seen and unseen, the desert and all that catches man's breath and takes it away. But the footprint of man is here, too: infinite ribbons of highways, washboard roads, desolate streets in abandoned towns, skyscrapers in cities where bullets and sirens are counterpoints to the quietness of nature. Fisher takes us from one world to the other, like a drifter passing through the civilized and the uncivilized, with a nuanced, sometimes jaundiced, eye and a soul filled with melancholy, loneliness, quiet wonder, and rootedness to earth. I recommend this book to all poetry lovers, all nature lovers, and people who simply like to reflect upon this world, upon life.

Free Ebook PDF Online Immortal Prairie and Other Poems, by James H. Ransom

James Ransom presents readers with poems covering an astonishing diversity of subjects. There are iconic echoes in some of them-Auden, Eliot and Shakespeare, as well as John Crowe Ransom and Christian Wiman-but comprehending the poems is never dependent on the reader's scholarship. These poems are plain-spoken and heartfelt. The subjects include observations of nature-prairie landscapes of Kansas (title poem) as well as the crags and forests of Scotland. You will be taken to an emergency room and surgery; you will also read about the arson of a church, even the demise of a fish. There are lessons from history and ironic observations about poetry itself. A sense of humor is found in unexpected places. Ransom reflects on childhood and maturity, and on his love and admiration for family members with challenges to meet. He is not afraid to confront questions of religion and faith in unorthodox ways. Political themes are not taboo here, but neither do they dominate. For a clash of cultures, read "Interview From Kotzebue." Or try "Darfur." Unlike the tradition of most books of poetry, Ransom includes photos and paintings. He believes that we live immersed in a culture of image and motion, which can be used to add another dimension to some poems. In that sense, this book is an experiment. If you have been confused, bored or disappointed by modern poetry, this book may help you re-engage.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Having had the great pleasure recently of reading S By kenny j Having had the great pleasure recently of reading S.P.'s wonderful collection of poetry, Nemuses Book I; Those peculiar wings, and Nemuses Book II; A fig for a kiss, I felt that a short review was in order. Each book can be read independently, as they vary in content, style and structure, but as a whole, they will leave you with an incredible sense of satisfaction. The language is lyrical and beguiling; appealing to the reader’s many emotions, while being provocative and compelling at the same time. Throughout the read, one is inevitably forced to direct the words onto oneself and contemplate what is, was, or could have been, internally, leaving a lasting impression on the soul. Nemuses Book 1 contains 17 poems and tells the story of a relationship conceived through seduction; with the seducer eventually recognized as a narcissistic, emotional abuser, who deceives and cruelly toys with the trusting teller of the poems. The imagery is at times very erotic, detailing the excitement and physical nature of the relationship. Sexual imagery of the natural world, words themselves as objects of desire, and an over-arching atmosphere of arousal, act to entice the reader from the very start. Classical allusions to mythological, historical and biblical figures add depth of meaning to the story, especially when the narrative shifts to representations of sickness and unhealthiness (in the relationship). Trees, in particular, are symbolic, with “parched, forlorn fruits”, “the tree I(s) embraced bore no fruit” and “birdless tree” foreshadowing the self-realization of the poet teller of her seducer’s true nature. The crystal mask is the culminating poem in this collection, exquisitely detailing the many masks worn by the abuser to deceive, control and emotionally toy with his victim. The gamut of emotions are experienced throughout this journey, until eventually, in the final poem (Quiet Chang-e), the poet teller breaks free from her manipulative tormentor. Experiencing pain and loss, she eventually rises and with just one magnificently crafted line; “by the corner of my lips seeds of laughter bloom into butterflies”, the reader also is released from quiet despair to exhilaration. These are not poems to be read through just once; they must be tasted multiple times in order to fully enjoy and grasp their true meaning and intent. These delicious and deeply textured poems are to be taken in slowly, swirled around inside the mouth to offer proper time for contemplative enjoyment, before being swallowed with a satisfying smile of comprehension. The subtlety of phrasing and intricacy of the fragments that make up this volume are to be cherished and lingered over. Once read, they will never be forgotten.

Excerpt from Phantasmion: A Fairy TalePhantasmion, the product of the enforced leisure on a sick bed of Sara Coleridge, was first given to the world in 1837; and although the book received warm and hearty commendation both privately and publicly from those who read it, the success which then attended it neither equalled in any degree its own singular merit, nor was what might have been expected, from the approbation the book met with at the hands of those best qualified to judge. I have always believed that this was in great measure owing to the mode of its publication. It was an expensive book, with no author's name, without a single illustration, and the edition was limited to two hundred and fifty copies. The publisher, Mr Pickering, doubted apparently the possibility of its being popular; and except that he printed it with all the care and beauty which marked every book he put forth, he seems almost to have determined that, as far as depended upon him, it should have no chance of becoming so.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. SC thought that this book was the 'very way to be not read' By A Customer Phantasmion is a beautiful story; even the reviewers of the 1874 edition had to concede to that even if they didn't like it at all.The narrative traces the development of Prince Phantasmion to his position as king, and husband, with the help of the benevolent insect fairy, Potentilla. It is an odd story which hangs between the anxieties of Romantic and Victorian fiction and has been little read, even in this age of critical appreciation of marginalised texts by women. This edition of it by Jonathan Wordsworth, is a well-made facsimile of the 1837 text; it does nothing to provide a much needed bibliography, and the details of the plot on the dust-jacket are wrong and seem to be taken from the fourth edition of the Oxford Companion to English Literature. So please don't be surprised if Phantasmion DOESN'T turn into a flying serpent.Still, it's back in print and we can forgive anyone for the above errors.
