Clayhanger, by Arnold Bennett

About the Author Enoch Arnold Bennett, the son of a solicitor, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1867. He was educated locally and at London University, before working initially as a solicitor's clerk, but soon turned to writing popular serial fiction and editing a women's magazine. After the publication of his first novel, 'A Man from the North' in 1898 he became a professional writer and some of his best and most enduring and acclaimed work, including 'Anna of the Five Towns', 'The Old Wives' Tale', 'Clayhanger', 'The Card' and 'Hilda Lessways' followed over the next twelve years. Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Bennett was invited to join the War Propaganda Bureau, concerned with finding ways of best promoting Britain's interests. He was in good company, as others who contributed to this effort included Conan Doyle, John Masefield, G. K. Chesterton, Sir Henry Newbolt, John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Gilbert Parker, G. M. Trevelyan and H. G. Wells. Bernard Shaw knew nothing of the Bureau, but attacked what he believed to be jingoistic articles and poems being produced by British writers. Bennett was the one chosen to defend their actions. He served on a War Memorial Committee at the invitation of the then Minister of Information, Lord Beaverbrook, and was also appointed director of British propaganda in France. His spells in Paris added to his reputation as a man of cosmopolitan and discerning tastes. After the War he inevitably returned to writing novels and also became a director of the 'New Statesman'. Bennett's great reputation is built upon the success of his novels and short stories set in the Potteries, an area of north Staffordshire that he recreated as the 'Five Towns'. 'Anna of the Five Towns' and 'The Old Wives' Tale' show the influence of Flaubert, Maupassant and Balzac as Bennett describes provincial life in great detail. Arnold Bennett is an important link between the English novel and European realism. He wrote several plays and lighter works such as 'The Grand Babylon Hotel' and 'The Card'. Arnold Bennett died in 1931.

By A Customer The story of a man from leaving school to middle age, set in an industrial town in the English midlands at the end of the 19th century. Sounds boring, but it isn't. Slow for the first few chapters, but then I found it unputdownable, you really get interested and want to know what happens. Lots of description of the environment of the time. No sex or violence, written no long after these actual times, so some bits of old fashioned prose. This aside, reminded me of Len Deighton's style of writing. I was a bit doubtful about buying this book, but I'm pleased I did.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Quite Good 'History' of a Man's Growth By divad sorcron Not outstanding, but a very good read. Some oddness in the flow of the story, but: I found the development of Edwin's love towards 'the girl' to be touching and highly entertaining. His lack of self-awareness is truly refreshing. Not an old-fashioned plough-of-a-read, but yet another very good Bennett, on the nature of humans. His writings are a treasure.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tales of an era By Bobby Mills My high rating for these books does not mean that I recommend them to every avid reader. Those who like the leisurely, sentimental writing style typical of the last half of the 19th century will enjoy them. Their tone is reminiscent of Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy. The stories progress very slowly and end almost back where they started although many years have elapsed. It was an age when a single romantic kiss meant betrothal, when fathers ruled with iron hands, when society was rigidly divided into classes, and women were totally dependent on men for their happiness and wellbeing. This review pertains to all three of the books of the Clayhanger trilogy. They tell the stories of Edwin, Hilda, and Janet from youth to adulthood and how they cope with the ridged mores, economic hardships, and family obligations of their times. A patient reader will get a very good concept of middle class English society and pictures of the upper and lower classes as well.

A note from the Author: So much of this world is fake. My goal in writing this book of poems is to lift the mask off of the face of reality and try, if ever so haphazardly and crudely, to show the world its true self. I am a Christian, and I hope you are too. Even if not, I think that everyone can stand to open their soul just a little more and learn from poetry, one of the finest of arts. Through my poems I will bare my soul to you, I will show you cruel things, beautiful things, and I hope, thought provoking things too. My poems are written from a certain worldview, and are a reflection of how I process that worldview. As a Christian, I see the world though a certain lens, as we all do. Deep reflection of our selves and of our own views is always a sound path to personal discovery. I hope you learn as much about yourself in reading as I did in writing. God Bless, Corey, A. Shaffer

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Man of Potential By Wesley Julian I've reviewed Shaffer's work before. Previously, I utterly demolished Shaffer's 'Alone.' I stand by that assessment, but neglected to include that Shaffer did demonstrate a measure of potential. That potential was buried under 'Alone', but if you looked closely enough you could see it.I'm happy to report that Shaffer's potential shows itself much more obviously in 'Man of Fire.' Honestly, 'Man of Fire' is made frustrating by this revelation. There's talent – that raw art fuel so few truly have and many pretend to have – and you can easily see it. What's frustrating is that it isn't realized, not fully anyway.I'll show you what you mean. The easiest poem to look at is one called 'Word Play.' Shaffer has a sense of humor and 'Word Play' is where that stands out the most. The first sentence goes, “This hat is awesome.” I laughed. This whimsy eventually descends into an Ecclesiastes-esque volley of deistic nihilism. The tone and progression both work wonderfully. But as Shaffer does well, he also falters. The word play itself isn't particularly memorable and the poem (like a few others) seem to ask, “At what point does something cease to be a poem and become prose?”That problem occurs in several poems. Amateur poets (guilty as charged) too often brush aside this sort of criticism with the argument, “Oh, it's free verse!” But what this is really saying is that it's a bit lazy. I'm not saying that Shaffer's poems are always lazy or always bad, but what I am saying is that in reading 'Man of Fire,' you may find yourself thinking that a little more effort could have brought out more. And that's what I'm going to tell Shaffer to do here. There are strengths in 'Man of Fire.' They are not enough to overcome its weaknesses, but they're there. It's hard to nail down the actual quality of 'Man of Fire.' There are good poems and there are flops, but there are enough moments of goodness to have you enjoying yourself. I've given the work three stars, based not on what going to say in the next few paragraphs, but based on what I feel is a fair assessment of Shaffer's present work here and now.In his introduction, Shaffer says, “Through my poems I will bare my soul to you, I will show you cruel things, beautiful things, and I hope, thought provoking things too.” Does he do this? Sure, Shaffer bares his soul and her certainly shows us things. There are good thoughts in here. I'm not pretentious enough to evaluate the depth of thought here, but I can say that the writing and language need work. The actual poetry side of the poetry, as it stands, is unremarkable and often boring. But there is thought behind it and there's a cleverness here that Shaffer needs to foster. My previous review was elaborate and overwritten and I could easily write more here as I deconstruct each and every poem. However, I want to keep this brief. Ultimately, an Amazon review should answer one question: is this product worth the money? Honestly, that's hard to say. I lean towards saying no, but please buy this book. Encourage Corey Shaffer to hone his craft further. Tell him to write more, to get his work reviewed and destroyed. Let him put his work through fire. In doing so, Shaffer will improve. Shaffer will learn and Shaffer will grow. Buy this book and see what I see. You'll understand why I'm asking you to buy it.

There is something very odd about Stella's neighbour. Rose leads a peculiar, Amish-like existence, refusing to have electricity in her Paris apartment. She teaches piano during the day, and in the evenings she makes wonderful quilts by candlelight. Birds love Rose. They come to her window, they follow her in the street - but other neighbours are suspicious, and she has enemies. Stella is drawn to her. The more she gets to know her, the more mysterious she becomes. Rose seems to be at the centre of some very disturbing events.

Candlepower..."Weaves a magic spell"

...is "so original that it takes my breath away".

Enjoy the magic By ManicScribbler Having read and enjoyed 'A Paris Haunting' by the same author last year, I was very pleased to come across 'Candlepower' while browsing favourite authors on Amazon. I downloaded it and began reading it almost at once, finding myself rapidly drawn in to the intriguing storyNarrated by Stella, all events are filtered through her consciousness, but as seems to happen with Doolaege's novels, the POV character takes something of a back seat in order to turn the spotlight on other characters. There are some marvellous characters in 'Candlepower', though none more delightful than Rose. Of course, the other thing this author does so well is evoke the atmosphere of a Paris unseen by tourists, making the reading a satisfying, visual experience. The question of who and what Rose is permeates the entire story. She's an ethereal being and I spent a lot of time wondering if she was meant to be real. She lives alone in a Paris apartment opposite Stella, teaching and playing beautiful music, creating exquisite patchwork quilts by candlelight (she shuns electricity) and talking to the birds. It is when Stella's canary, Topaz escapes through the window that Stella first meets Rose. Unable the resist the attraction Rose has over all living creatures, Topaz leaves his tree and flies into her hands, and that's the beginning of a rather haunting friendship. There is a beautiful poignancy about the way this story unfolds around the two almost-tragic females who find friendship in a world in which they are both slightly out of kilter. Bilingual Stella escapes from an overbearing mother, academic father, not-too-loveable brother and an unhappy love affair, into a Paris apartment she purchases with her beloved grandmother's legacy. She yearns to love and be loved and after meeting Rose, embarks on another love affair with Rose's friend, Olivier, ignoring all the hints that her fragile heart is again at serious risk.Of Rose, Stella tells her father, "People are drawn to her, but somehow they're scared of her at the same time." This sums up everyone's attitude towards the tormented Rose and the reader longs to know more about her and for the other characters to understand and accept this strange and rather wonderful creature in the same way the birds do with their unquestioning adoration. It's always difficult, when writing a review, to say enough to interest other readers but not too much to give away 'spoilers', so I'm reluctant to say more about the events and mar the reading experience for others. And it's a reading experience I highly recommend. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it and when I was reading, I was mesmerised by the often grim Parisian atmosphere and the colourful, diverse characters. The story is beautifully told and weaves a magical spell that held me enthralled from beginning to end. Read it - enjoy the magic.

By Amazon Customer This story is a tapestry of its own, mixing in vivid landscapes of Paris life with emotional descriptions of living in a foreign city. It is a magical story told by a talented musician named Stella. Stella is in the process of finding what she really wants out of life in her career, all while avoiding being lonely at the same time. She is from a family of dual backgrounds, her mother is French and her father is English. Living in Paris after her grandmother leaves her an inheritance, Stella works in an office, but her true passion occurs at home with her guitar.Stella lives with her beautiful conarry Topaz, who flies free one day out of her open window. She races outside to find him being coaxed out of the tree by a mysterious woman named Rose. This is where the story truly begins. Rose is a peculiar woman who sews beautiful coats and quilts, and she also teaches piano lessons. Rose also does not use ANY electricity. There is something quite attractive about Rose and almost all are drawn to her, people and animals alike. We also meet Oliver through Rose, who Stella finds very attractive but in a totally different way. There is some definite heartbreaking moments throughout this story. However, by the time I was over halfway finished with book, I was pleasantly surprised by the feeling of optimism exploding from within Stella.I was captivated by Ms. Doolaege's writing and how she draws you into her story, feeding you with each passage. I truly could not put this book down and stayed up late several nights engrossed in its pages. There seems to be a continuation story that can be made from the ending of this one, and I will anxiously wait for its publication.

She meets her neighbor Rose. Stella is fascinated with Rose and the unlikely pair become friends. Rose is a bit mysterious, some find her (Rose) a bit odd. But not Stella, she is captivated by her "uniqueness".Rose does not believe in modern luxuries, such as electricity. But she does have a love of birds, and making quilts. As the two become friends, Stella faces some of her inner struggles, and even falls for a young man.A well written fascinating story, told from Stella's point of view. I really liked Stella, she has some inner feelings she must comes to terms with. Rose is very likable. The more I read about her the more I liked her. And I loved the "mystique" around Rose.I don't do spoilers so I won't say too much more. The story is very original, the prose flows with perfection on each page, and the atmosphere drew me in. Set in Paris added "charm" I really liked, the setting.Overall I feel that Candlepower is a definite five star read and book lovers (or all genres) will greatly enjoy this fascinating, captivating, magical tale.*This book was a gift.

100 Things To Do In The Twin Cities Before You Die, by Tom Weber

About the Author Tom Weber is a host for Minnesota Public Radio News. Originally from the Chicago area, he was familiar with cold and winter. But upon moving here at the start of a two-week, below-zero cold snap, Tom quickly embraced all things Minnesota. He lives in St. Paul and generally likes to spend his free time outside (even in the winter) and enjoys biking, hiking, running and cross-country skiing. He was also happy to learn, during his research for this book, that there are still plenty of places in the Twin Cities still to discover. This is this first book.

Everyone who visits the Twin Cities – even those who have been there before – should give it a read. I hope that the publisher is featuring this book prominently at the airport.

Lee What better way to discover a fun 'to-do" list in the Twin Cities by Minnesota Public Radio "The Daily Circuit" expert, Tom Weber? Fun, quick book that provides great tips on what things you need to explore, eat, see and do.

Was looking for a quick read that would give them a sense of the Twin Cities. We ended up doing a couple of activities outdoors I wouldn't have thought of. A lot of the suggestions are pretty obvious if you know the area already. He puts a humorous spin on them though. There were definitely things I'd never heard about before, like the art festival in June that runs from sunset until sunrise. A lot of the entries make you want to get outdoors.

I saw the segment on Channel 6 about this book and had to get it. My experience with self- and co-published books, is that they're marginal in quality, editing, and content. Not the case here. Ms. Posh did a great job of capturing all there is to do in Milwaukee and did it with a great writing style, and no editing blunders. Many of the things listed, I've done, but I've found many new places and things to check out. Many interesting facts are presented too, such as: the Milwaukee Wave is the oldest continually operating professional soccer franchise in North America! Who knew?? She provides suggested itineraries for various scenarios too. All-in-all, a great book, whether you've lived here all your life, or are just passing through for a few days.

His dad has lost his job and now the education he'd almost taken for granted is out of reach. Although his mother and sister volunteer to sacrifice so he can complete his degree he insists on going to work to make money for his family.Set much like the Horatio Alger stories I love, this one features an older fellow -- he's 20 or 21. In any event while in college our hero was a captain of the rowing team and quite an athlete. He disdained reporters. That ends up being the only job he is remotely qualified for however. He does not start out as a Great Shakes reporter however. In fact, if there's a mistake a man can make, our hero does so.I rather liked that he was perfect. He was honest though, even to his failings. The story revolves around a train workers strike and is quite exciting. The story seems true to life, and is great fun. I'm glad I read it. For those who consider reporting "easy", well, read this for an insider's look at the field. The story held my interest and was enjoyable.

"This is a story that is based on what I "hope" was a really intense dream I had. I find myself dead and standing in a line on an ancient looking rope bridge. I've never been very good at waiting in a line so I slowing begin to talk my way ahead of the others in line. One of the first people I encounter is a young women who is very upset that she had been killed by a drunk driver who had never been caught. When I tried to console her, I was transported from the bridge to where she had been killed and was able to cause the killer to be captured and punished. Returning to the bridge I found her no longer angry but happy and at peace. Somehow, I had changed her and thought how cool it was to have done that. I meet many more people and experience many more adventures as I did with the woman. Some of the people I am able to help and some I can't, but was somehow able to make very small to very drastic changes along the way. The story ends at the gates of both heaven and hell however my story ends differently from everyone else's on the bridge."

In Private Hercules McGraw: Poems of the American Civil War, poem by poem, Private McGraw, each poem's speaker, shares with us his journey through the landscapes of the American Civil War. McGraw, a Confederate soldier and racist, steps into the War in order to assure that slavery will exist long enough for him to purchase a slave with hopes to impress his love, Martha. As McGraw treks through the blood and mire, experiencing both triumph and tragedy, he begins to transform into a man of peace and compassion - a man who no longer sees a black man or a white man; he simply sees a man - a fellow, a brother.

There's a story woven through them, and it gains in power as it goes along. The most impressive aspect of the poems, to my mind, is the way that war humanizes Hercules and sets his priorities straight. It brings to mind that experience, that many of us have had at some point in our lives, of realizing that there are very few things of real value in life, but those that remain are love, relationships, and the other gifts that we sometimes take for granted.

That's why when S. Thomas Summers contacted me about reading his book of Civil War related poetry I had to give it some thought. I'm glad I did because this turned out to be quite the little gem!In a series of brief, mostly one page or less, poems we follow the growth and maturation of young Private Hercules McGraw. McGraw and two friends enlist in the Confederate army. McGraw joins because he feels he has to own a slave in order to win the heart and hand of Martha Lane. McGraw here clearly puts the cause of the war as slavery; "the new president up in Washington is planning on making all them free".The three young soldiers end up at Shiloh where two key events take place for young Hercules: he shoots his first Yankee and he also finds his friend Nate dead on the battlefield. Seeing his friend dead leads Hercules to question his motives for fighting. As the war progresses Hercules finds himself becoming more soldier like. He feels he no longer has an opinion and just does as he is told. It was best not to think. The poem Regrets contains my favorite lines from the book: ....Walked into the war thinking I was doing some good but the war never noticed I was there. I could of sneaked off, slunk into some hole and nobody would have guessed I was gone. Then I could have talked to Jesus again---It is in this poem that Hercules and his friend Willy sneak off eventually joining a regiment that ended up in Gettysburg. While at Gettysburg Hercules compares Abraham Lincoln to Satan and also continues to grow up. He further realizes he doesn't need Martha Lane and that fighting a was so he can own a slave to impress her was not worth it. She was not worth it. During Pickett's Charge Hercules witnesses his friend Willy get shot in the head and die. Hercules is happy for him. During the retreat from Pennsylvania McGraw states that God is a Yankee and he considered the war over.McGraw eventually deserts the army and heads back home empty handed as far as material things go. What he comes home with however is a new attitude and outlook. On his journey home he witnessed a regiment of black troops fighting and he realized that these were men. Not property, but men.The sum of these pieces is truly worth more than the individual parts. A reader does not have to have knowledge of the Civil War to enjoy this story. What a reader needs is the willingness to sit for a few minutes and enjoy a great coming of age story. Well written, this is a book that can be read in pieces or can easily be finished in one sitting. Highly recommended!

Summers as he brings to life Private Hercules McGraw and his treacherous life during one of Americas bloodiest wars, the American Civil War. After reading some of the finest war time poetry, you will leave with a sense of what it was like for the soldiers and their families. You will sense the fear and uncertainty in the daily lives of the common solider. A must read! You will come away smelling the aroma of black powder in the air!

Flower Fables, by Louisa May Alcott

From Publishers Weekly Written for Ralph Waldo Emerson's daughter, Ellen, when Alcott was 16, and first published in 1855, these six prosy fairy tales were chosen from a 1992 collection, Louisa May Alcott's Fairy Tales and Fantasy Stories, edited by Daniel Shealy; Shealy provides an informative afterword here. Readers meet a cast of elves, fairies, brownies and sprites with such Shakespearean names as Willy Wisp, Moonbeam and Thistledown, and the children who occasionally dally with them. Thinly disguised morality lessons told in an over-upholstered style, they instruct the audience in the importance of various virtues. In "The Frost King," for example, elves resolve to conquer the ice-hearted ruler of winter through peaceable means ("Let us teach you how beautiful sunshine and love and happy work can make you"). More than a little dated, the stories grow tedious with lofty homilies (e.g., "little Annie dwelt like a sunbeam in her home, each day growing richer in the love of others and happier in herself"). Preiss's (The Pig's Alphabet) garish artwork further hampers an emotional connection to the stories. The lack of tonal subtlety is aggravated by a self-consciously multicultural-esque grouping of fairy folk with oversize but misshapen eyes and bizarrely pointed ears and chins. Even the typeface, which has distractingly flowery ligatures, is overdone. All but the most die-hard Alcott fans can skip this one. Ages 5-12. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review Flower Fables is a treasury of six different stories penned by Louisa May Alcott. These old-fashioned fairy tales have been compiled and edited by Daniel Shealy, who has done editing on several Alcott books. The text is very readable, and has magic flavor added via the font's joining together of several letters. Today's children, like many children of the past, will enjoy meeting Alcott's fairies, sentient flowers, and other real and imagined characters. Illustrator Leah Palmer Preiss has filled the book with delightful and interesting fairies and other creatures. The illustrations are bright and full. Readers may want to watch for the bonuses of quotations and tiny portraits of those who influenced Louisa May Alcott. This book would make a good bedtime storybook, and like many tales of old, has good morals that children could take away with them perhaps without even realizing there was a lesson involved. The afterword is also interesting as it shares interesting details about Miss Alcott. For example, she wrote these tales when she was 16. Another bonus at the end of the book is the biographies that go along with the quotations and miniature portraits. -- From Independent Publisher

From the Publisher A talented group has been assembled to produce this edition. Daniel Shealy, the Alcott scholar who has edited the complete body of her fantasy fiction, contributes an illuminating afterward and is the book's editorial consultant. Leah Palmer Preiss's incomparable art suits the fresh and imaginative spirit of these pioneering tales. A playful facet of Preiss's exquisite illustrations is her inclusion of hidden quotes from and minuscule portraits of individuals who helped shape Alcott's life and work. Look closely and discover the words and faces of Shakespeare, Plato, Alcott's beloved mentors Emerson and Thoreau, and many more.

However, for young children (age 3-5), you really need to include some type of picture on each page. Amazon sells about a dozen versions of the hardback of this book, and color pictures are sadly lacking in most of them. I checked out at least 3 versions from the library before settling on the one I am buying. If you're going to purchase Flower Fables, my recommendation is the version published in 1998 and illustated by Leah Palmer Preiss. She features full page color illustrations every 3-4 pages, and nearly every page includes some type of color. The introduction is abridged to fit on one page, but the text of the fables appears intact.Note that Amazon's "Look Inside" feature shows the same book interior regardless of which printing you are ordering.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. A beautifully illustrated compilation of fables. By A Customer This discovery of unpublished fables by Louisa May Alcott should be read by children during their important impressionable years. The illustrations are beautiful and complimentary to the text. While classics of Louisa May Alcott, Little Women and Little Men, are for the early teens, these fables for the preteens tease the imagination in a magical way. This sort of alternative to the upbringing of children by the video media is sorely needed and provided by Flower Fables.

In this book, TOMMY JOE LINTNER presents a collection of pieces he was inspired to write as a result of an intensive study of the Beat Generation, a major counterculture movement in 1950's and early 1960's America. You'll be taken on a journey back to the past when Beatniks, coffee houses, cool poets, hip bebop musicians and dramatic personalities who wanted to change the world reigned supreme, at least within their own world.
