"Antonio Hopson spins gentle legends and quiet love stories. From biker goddesses to mythical tricksters, from feuding winds to debauched taverns, the subjects of 'The Vernal Equinox of Death and Kisses and Other Short Stories' reveal the author's romantic enchantment with the world around him, even when it's at its grittiest." -Dru Pagliassotti, Editor in Chief, The Harrow "Antonio Hopson writes with a subtle power and a minimalist's sense of economical prose. His affecting style comes on slowly and dances beneath the surface, evoking abstract emotions that stretch beyond the short boundaries of his flash-fiction. Layered and dense, his writing belongs to the prose genre but employs the artistic precision of poetry." -Mike Dell'Aquila, Editor, Farmhouse "Antonio Hopson writes with the sense and instincts of a Jack Keruoac, combined with the cultural eye for detail of a Chuck Klosterman. All five senses thrive when reading his prose, which moves through you like the Snoqualmie River itself." -Jon Horowitz, The Wonder Boy Review

See my live reading of a few if you don't believe me By The Mohawked Reviewer [[VIDEOID:e79990b54a55bf30431d429c05760446]] I received this book free for review from the author or publisher in exchange for an honest review. Despite the privilege of receiving a free book, I'm absolutely candid about it below because I believe authors and readers will benefit most from honest reviews rather than vacuous 5-star reviews.* Very thematically solid material. Good solid free verse.* Want to hear some? Watch the video.* I usually tear poetry books limb from limb but this one is quite enjoyable.PS: I hope my review was helpful. If it was not, then please let me know what I left out that you'd want to know. I always aim to improve.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Amazing. Antonio Hopson shares himself By LaShonnu Waterhouse Romantic. Erotic. Sensual. Thought provoking. Amazing.Antonio Hopson shares himself, his life, and his observations with us in this book, and does an amazing job of doing so. He does an excellent job of taking everyday situations and romanticizing them, for example, crows going about their business in the short story "A Murder of Crows". Some of the other poems, such as "Have it My Way", will have you reaching for a cold beverage and a fan to cool yourself off. A must read, and this would make a great date night, snuggle up close, before bedtime read. Nice work, Hop. Son!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Beans By Amanda Cornelius As with any great poet, Hopson effortlessly moves us from the moods of sardonic (Mr. Law) to the provocative and broody (Kelly Flynn). He also has the uncanny ability to take the reader on an eviscerating little journey (Bleach). These pieces of the author are like an onion. There are layers upon layers to peel back and explore. Well worth the read.

In the summer of 2005, in the middle of a spiritual crisis, "This American Life"'s David Ellis Dickerson took a break from grad school and drove the entire length of I-10 to see what he could learn on the road from Jacksonville to Santa Monica. He steals a lot of books, gets three conflicting psychic readings in New Orleans, visits the 11th Roswell UFO Festival, and interviews burlesque performers, roller derby girls, religious mavericks, scientists, and some outright crazy people...all while facing a series of catastrophes that puts the whole trip in jeopardy. And he discovers, along the way, who his people are and what his future might be. Come along! It's a fun trip

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Go West, Young Man By Brian Reeves Dave Dickerson, faced with a summer free from grad school demands and some money in his bank account, decides to take a road trip along I-10, starting in Jacksonville and ending in Los Angeles. More than just a time-killer, this trip is the experience upon which hangs A) his desire to understand his religious inner conflicts (he's an atheist who was raised a fundamentalist Christian, and finds himself both fascinated and repulsed by religion, yet oddly yearns for the community and comfort religion provides); B) his bad luck with dating (he's coming out of a dating dry spell, and finds himself attracted to rebellious and highly feminist women); and C) his pressing need to make progress on his doctoral dissertation (years in a PhD program have not forced him to produce in the way he expected it would, and he's unsatisfied with his current material). Toss into this mix a love for books, where Dave decides to find, read, and review a dusty old tome being ignobly used as decoration in every town he visits, and where he spends the road trip catching up on as many books-on-tape as possible. This is Travels With Ritalin, a solo road trip into sexual and religious uncertainty, with some weird encounters and wacky characters to meet along the way.Things are a little slow to start. There's a lot of forethought that goes into the trip, as you can see from above, and Dave knows we need to understand the stakes before the journey can begin. But the early pages give us important insight into the mind of the man we'll be traveling with. Once he gets rolling (in his car named "Ritalin" -- hence the title), starting off by taking an easterly jog from his home in Tallahassee (where he attends Florida State University) to St. Augustine by way of Jacksonville, he immediately encounters the first in a series of strange exploits.Unafraid to approach strangers, Dave finds himself time and again caught up in conversations with colorful characters. Some provide little beside entertainment value, but from time to time he has an encounter that helps him explore the dominant themes and enduring questions in his life: guilt-free and female-empowering sexuality, how to square atheism with an implacable desire for spiritual understanding, and finding a place and peer group in which he feels he truly belongs.Travels With Ritalin feels more perceptive than Dave's other major book-length work of nonfiction, House of Cards, which told of his years working as a greeting card writer at Hallmark. During that time, he was faced with similar questions as he began the process of apostasy from his fundamentalist faith, struggled with sexual desire that flew in the face of his former beliefs, and grappled with feeling out of place in career and social circles. Just as in that work, Dave Dickerson is unafraid to be honest with the reader, baring his inner self. Though the situations in which he finds himself are not as awkward as in House of Cards, Dave's westward and inward exploration is no less poignant.

Shadows And Strongholds, by Elizabeth Chadwick

From Booklist Set in England in 1148, Chadwick’s historical coming-of-age novel follows the grueling life of tormented 10-year-old Brunin FitzWarin as he makes the journey to becoming a war hero. He is bullied by his older brothers and verbally abused by his grandmother, while his submissive mother sits in the shadows, until his father, having survived an assassination attempt by cohorts of his enemy, Gilbert de Lacy, decides to send Brunin away to live with Joscelin de Dinan, Lord of Ludlow. It is at Lord Joscelin’s home that Brunin learns how to conquer his internal and external demons. He also falls in love with the youngest daughter, Hawise. The two become closer as the war between Ludlow, Gilbert de Lacy, and Brunin’s own family rages on, and Brunin must draw on all that he has learned to help defeat his enemies and save his land. Best-selling historical novelist Chadwick provides an engaging tale of betrayal, loyalty, and passion, a must-read for every hopeless romantic and medieval-action junkie who enjoys a compassionate story rich in well-researched historical details. --Carissa Chesanek

Review 'The best writer of mediaeval fiction currently around' - HISTORICAL NOVEL REVIEW 'From the first page the characters gripped me. They are beautifully drawn, varied and wonderfully real. The plotting is intricate and it moves along at a satisfying pace. This is a terrific read and the only problem is the inability to put it down' - Marina Oliver

Chadwick's books just can't be bad By Lilly Flora Because I bought this book in an English bookstore in Amsterdam, I've read it before it has been published in the USA. This book is very good, it's even better the Lords of the White Castle, and is certainly worth reading for the back-story on how the FitzWairin family loses Whittington Castle.England in the time of the civil war between Stephen and Matilda is not a fun place to be. Because of the war between the kingly ones, justice is not getting dispensed to those in need. For this reason, strong alliances are more important than ever. Thus, Hawise de Dinan and Brunin FitzWairin, two teenagers who have known each other their whole lives are made to wed so that Brunin can help protect Hawse's family estate, Ludlow, which is under almost constant attack from Gilbert de Lacy.Readers of Lords of The White castle will be delighted to read the romantic and stunning story of the parents of Fulke FitzWairin, who unfortunately aren't seen much in LOTWC.All The characters are real people of their time with true personas and real motivations, and as always, this is not some nice neat tale of midlevel life. It's dirty and gritty and very realistic. It's also not really fair to classify this as a romance novel, since there isn't that much sex in the book. Chadwick has done it again!

28 of 30 people found the following review helpful. A smashing good tale of medieval England that's based in fact. By Rebecca Huston Every couple of years or so, British author Elizabeth Chadwick delivers up a new adventure of life in the tumultuous twelfth century for her fans. Whenever I find myself waiting impatiently for her next new release, I go through her backlist of novels to help me bide the time. This time with the novel, Shadows and Strongholds, the story is set on the Welsh frontier of England in the twelfth century. It is a rather untamed place, where the lords of the various castles and manors are on a constant state of alert for the Welsh to come raiding, their favourite hobby being the cattle rustling and stealing women away. Too, they don't fight like the English, much preferring a quick hit-and-run approach rather than the more organized Norman way of battle.Into this world is born Brunin FitzWarin. Brunin is the second son of a powerful nobleman, and has grown up in the shadow of his fearsome grandmother, the sharp-tongued Mellette. Mellette has never bothered to hide her contempt for the child, and has encouraged his brothers to tease and torment him, causing Brunin to retreat into himself, doubting his own abilities, a fatal flaw in a culture that prided itself on personal courage and warfare. When he goes with his father to St. Peters Fair in the nearby town of Shrewsbury, Brunin gets a hard lesson in medieval politics when he is beaten and nearly killed by squires of his father's rival, Gilbert de Lacy. His father furious, but a family friend, Joscelin de Dinan, offers to help by taking Brunin into his household for training. It's a solution that Fulk happily agrees to.In Joscelin's stronghold of Ludlow Castle, ten year old Brunin gets to discover a world that he could scarcely dream of. At Ludlow he finds that Joscelin's wife, Sybilla, is a kind mentor, and his daughters, Sibbi and Hawise, are just as forceful and proud as their father. Hawise in particular becomes a close friend, sharing in his adventures, and even the adoring, kittenish, Marion, forms a bond with him. In this nurturing environment, Brunin is able to build his self-reliance and finds a talent for warfare and courage within himself. Both of these talents will be needed when he suddenly succeeds to his father's lands just as civil war for England's crown overtakes the Welsh marches, and everyone at Ludlow risks losing everything that they have built...Yes, there is a follow-up to this one, Lords of the White Castle, published several years earlier, but taking place after the events of Shadows and Strongholds.I really took to the story of Brunin and Hawise. Brunin is a very sympathetic character, a young man that finds the strength inside of himself to succeed. Hawise is more of a partner to him than just a broodmare of a wife, clever in her own way, and able to work with her husband -- and lucky enough to have a husband that sees that valuable trait in her. The secondary characters are just as interesting, especially Joscelin and Sybilla, and who can't help but wince at the choices that Marion makes? Even the villains of the piece, the de Lacys and their henchmen, inspire some understanding, and moves them beyond the usual two-dimensional figures that are all too common.I have to say that Elizabeth Chadwick has become one of my favourite authors to read. Her research is based around solid research about the actual people and times of the period -- and yes, Josecelin, Sybilla, Brunin and Hawise all lived, and even poor Marion is an actual historical figure. It's this ability to turn a legend or story into people that the reader gets to know and like, and not resorting to the trivialities of most historical fiction, that makes this author really stand out from the lackluster fiction that most historical fiction tends to pass itself as. While her books are indeed rather thick, and do take time to get through, the patient reader will be greatly rewarded. What I enjoy the most about Ms. Chadwick's work is that she remains focused on the people and times of the period. Her research is spot on, and has the feel of actually being there in an age of chivalry. Yes, it's very much a man's world, where women have little political voice and power, but behind the scenes, they could have a great deal of influence. As to the round of daily life, the details of the battlefield and such things as clothing, food and music, Ms. Chadwick has gotten to know what she is doing, by being brave enough to be with historical reinactors and learns by doing. It's this little step that fills her novels with so much life that I swear I can feel the medieval period come to life around me, and isn't that, after all, what we read historical fiction for?Don't let the cover fool you, these are not the sappy, sticky historical romances that tend to litter bookstores. This is straight up historical fiction based in fact and worth every penny. The more I read of Ms. Chadwick's work, the more I want of her novels. Fans of Sharon Kay Penman and the early works of Roberta Gellis are urged to give her books a try, you won't be disappointed.Four and a half stars, round up to five. Enthusiastically recommended.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful! By DoubtfulMuse Elizabeth Chadwick's ability to create both believable characters and believable medieval settings is nothing short of amazing. Shadows and Strongholds is a romance, but it's far superior to most category romances, and really, it's superior to most historical novels in general. I can hardly wait for Chadwick's next book.

Witness love incarnate and embrace the chaos through his heart, which goes through such a metamorphosis that causes him to make a peculiar vow. Some would take this vow and view it as cynical or brash, whereas he feels it is the only way to lead a joyous life. Will you agree with him by the last stanza? The choice is yours. It has been from the very beginning.

Elliott watches seasons of Man vs. Wild and Forest Gump in Japanese until enough is enough, and he quits his job. He’s going to begin at the top of Japan and start skating south, following the ocean and a long trail of 7-Elevens. He’ll encounter wild animals and camp in a graveyard. He’ll make friends along the way and a new grandmother. Up and over never-ending mountains, Elliot faces many challenges, swollen ankles and 46 days of rising suns. With his skateboard he will reach and fall at new speeds. His tan will be golden and his chastity belt tight. The rice will be plenty and the holes in his shoes many. But he will not be a chicken. Japan will be crossed, from Hokkaido to Okinawa.

An extremely humorous and gripping style throughout the travel adventures of Sean Elliott By Silvia I read travel literature whenever I get the chance and Sean Elliott's alert perceptiveness and his imagination are contaminating. The quixotic allusion that immediately comes to mind feels a bit confining for the wild and modern vibe of this book. It's very tempting, but I don't want to compare him to Bukowski, either, because the author may have to be a bit *more* sexually flamboyant and addicted to a counterculture that openly challenges the mainstream. It's Sean Elliott's independent adventurous spirit and his creative curiosity that stand out. If you are familiar with Alan Booth's "The Roads to Sata" or Will Ferguson's "Hitching Rides with Buddha", this book will naturally provide you with an interesting counterpoint. Although it is more eccentric, nonchalant, and boundary-free, it also offers you an inside view of Japan 'off the beaten track' that pierces through stereotypes and shapes an original and insightful perspective. It will also delight you with a fine comedic style. The author focuses on lifestyle aspects and individual quirks he comes across rather than more general cultural issues such as customs. The aim of the book is not drawing distinctions or creating some 'expat drama' due to culture clash. This is quite refreshing when you are bombarded with travel books that center on culture shock or soul-searching. Sean Elliott's travel memoir can charm you through an almost dizzying succession of intriguing places and curious incidents on the road across Japan. The author notices fine nuances and details about people's lifestyle and mentality and always presents things from an interesting angle. Skateboarding across Japan (from Cape Soya to Cape Sata) adds an original twist to the classic travel narrative. It brings a sense of risk and bravery. Even Kerouac would have liked this take 'on the road'. The reader can enjoy an extremely humorous and hearty style throughout the myriad adventures of a freedom-loving personality. The cover is evocative of the playful, easy-going, youthful, and lively atmosphere in the whole book. Besides, it makes me think of what Elliott says in the end about the way he senses the passage of time and the long distant road left behind him while he manages to stay cheerful and open regardless of any hardship along the way. I also liked the whole design of the book and the visual insertions. They are well-chosen and add flavor even when they're not only glimpses into the beauty of Japanese life, but also proof of bloody fingers, fierce crabs, huge colorful spiders, and other signs of wildness. The epilog is both insightful and provocative. On the one hand, Sean Elliott reflects upon what he learned along his journey. He feels more mature in a way and better prepared for life's challenges. On the other hand, he cannot resist signaling the (slightly less orthodox) influence he has over his pupils. It sounds as if he knew how to instigate people's minds. The book is naturally a good read for people who love traveling or discovering new information and facets of exotic places through the eyes of a Westerner (an obviously captivated one...). It's also fun for those who have a weakness for autobiographical texts and surely catching for readers who enjoy more or less eroticized writing. The style is raw and real, sometimes blunt, but fluid, lighthearted, spontaneous, and always funny.

SKATEBOARD TRIP THROUGH JAPAN By Books R Best I was intrigued by the idea of skateboarding from one of Japan to the other and I have to admire the courage of the author in not only attempting the journey, but on completing it. The book was well written, the sentences connected and the editing and grammar were excellent. There were two things that spoiled it for me however. Firstly there was a limited description of places of national interest, and a lot of sleeping in internet cafes and eating at 7Elevens, but worse was the author’s preoccupation with bodily functions that I would prefer not to have read about. That said, this book does give you some insight into Japan and its people and culture.

In his free time and while at his 9-5 job, if he can get away with it, he likes to read, write, and daydream of new adventures he'd like to set out on, like skateboarding across Cuba and changing his name to Sancho Panza and riding a donkey across China.' From that you get a sense that this is one funny guy, but it is only after reading the Prologue that you get a taste of what you're in for in this hilarious memoir. See what you think:`I never imagined I'd feel so low as to buy a bottle of red wine and an apple pie, and silently jerk off to porn and ejaculate into an empty soft- serve ice cream cup in an Internet cafe cubicle with six- foot- tall walls and people sitting on either side of me. How could I feel so horribly depressed when I was doing exactly what I wanted? Nine years ago I was 19 and didn't know what I wanted to do. One morning, my mom found me face down in vomit in the living room and called 911 when she couldn't wake me. Firemen stood over me laughing when I lifted my head with dried vomit stuck to my face. She kicked me out of the house for the third time and dropped me off at the Greyhound bus station in downtown Los Angeles. I got on the wrong bus in El Paso, Texas, met a punk rocker with two first names, and together we hitchhiked to St. Louis, where I called my dad and he got me a bus ticket the rest of the way to Florida. After three months in Florida, like the previous times, I convinced my mom I'd be good and told her what she wanted to hear: that I wouldn't invite friends over while she was at work, drink, or do drugs. When I returned to California, I slept on the sofa in the living room. My mom had rented my room out to a Japanese college student, Saori. Through Saori I met Akiko, who I'd date for four years. I lasted three months before I was kicked out for the final time.'Personally I know next to nothing about skateboarding so I am unable to comment on that important aspect of this book. But even if you don't know what a skate board is, this is a book that will knock you off your chair laughing. It is outrageously funny - yet also insightful. You can't help but like this Sean Elliott, not only because he pushes the borders of sanity and good taste, but also because he is such an innately fine writer. We need to hear more from him on a regular basis. The book is raw, naughty at times, but always with heart. This book is good for what ails you - if you're down in the dumps about the current global situation. Grady Harp, June 15

Settlers coming to the Katy area in the mid-1800s found a cane-filled creek on the vast coastal prairie. The area became known as Cane Island. When the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad laid tracks in the 1890s, a stop 30 miles west of Houston was needed to refill the water tanks on steam engines. Land agents were hired to find residents for a town, and in 1896, that town was named Katy. Early residents were farmers and ranchers, and businesses opened to support a growing community. By the mid-1900s, rice farming dominated thousands of acres. The crops brought migrating birds, and hunting became a second industry. Now known as one of the fastest growing and most desirable locations in the nation, Katys roots are firmly planted in an area with rich history and a growing population that is working hard to preserve it.

31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. The Last Thing You See by Emma South By MsChris1161 This book was incredible! So very, very good I once again found myself sacrificing sleep because I could not stop turning the pages. THE LAST THING YOU SEE by Emma South is a touching and heartfelt love story of two people who seem at first look to have nothing in common, but their souls seem to recognize a kindred spirit and they connect on a very deep level.Their first meeting occurs when a crazed stalker of the beautiful, rising starlet Harper attacks her in public and Nick, a recently discharged Marine, just happens to be nearby and saves her with his lightening fast response. Harper visits him in the hospital to thank him and see for herself he will survive the injuries he endured for her safety. One visit becomes more as they both feel the strong attraction and sense of belonging whenever they are together. Nick becomes Harper's fight trainer for the new movie she's filming giving them a reason for spending regular time together. Despite the attraction, and because of the hidden brokenness they both struggle with, they begin as friends who quickly find themselves comfortable sharing deep secrets creating a strong emotional bond of trust and respect, and finally true love.I absolutely loved how well Emma plays out Harper and Nick falling in love. This is not a rushed love at first sight story. This is story of second chances, of the healing power of honest and real love, and accepting yourself -- scars and all. Harper may be one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, but the scars and insecurities of her early childhood she hides behind her public face have left her every bit as damaged and broken as Nick. Most of Nick's scars may be visible, he was captured and cruelly tortured by the enemy when he was on active duty overseas, but the worst of his pain comes from the loss and failure he feels for not protecting the one person that mattered the most. Saving Harper begins his slow trek to healing and keeping her safe from the stalker, who is still at large, and gives him a new purpose. For her part, Harper realizes she has found someone who sees her for who she truly is, expects nothing from her, loves her unconditionally, and would give his very life to protect her. She has yearned for this true acceptance her whole life. The last Thing You See is a tender love story, with times of humor, great passion, frustration, sorrow, danger, and suspense told in a very real way through the very talented writing of Emma South. I laughed, I cried, I fumed, I sighed! The entire story is wonderful keeping my full attention and the ending is especially gripping, chilling really. Leaving this reader wondering right up until the end what would be the last thing they see. So good! 5 stars~Complimentary copy received in exchange for a honest review~

She is a must read!!!Harper and Nick meet by "accident". He becomes her hero, she becomes his. Harper is an up and coming actress, her mom is her manager and her brother stands in as a bodyguard. One day as the are walking to their car, she is attacked by a stalker/obsessed fan. Before being attacked her focus was on the man standing on the corner with scars and tattoos, but he is the one who jumps in to save her. After visiting him at the hospital she sees the good in Nick her hero, ex-marine/bodyguard and Nick realizes she is a real caring person not some fake/standoff actress. Harper feels so comfortable with Nick that she wants to spend more time with him and comes up with a plan for him to teach her jiu jitsu for her next role. They both have pasts they are trying to deal with. As this friendship grows so does their trust with one another. They soon are opening up and sharing their pasts, secrets and fears. This story is about growing, trusting and finding the one who makes your life worth it. You will not be able to put this book down as there is so more to it!

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Another Winner for Emma South By CJY Emma South has done it again. It is a wonderful 5 Star book.I absolutely loved both Harper and Nick. I am so hoping that we will se more of Harper and Nick continue their story .I had read her last series and thought she wouldn't be able to top the Jeremy Holt books, but I was wrong. "The Last Thing you See" is a story that will make you laugh, cry and keep turning pages till the end. The only problem that I had was that it ended! The pain and feelings of both characters jump off each page, and this reader wanted them to find love with each other and heal. Nick had scars inside and out but Harper only felt his love. These two characters fought all the odds and obstacles that were thrown at them. It is so great to see how each of them blossomed out of their pain to find true love.Without sharing spoilers, i want to say that the editing was great and the storyline kept me up through the night reading to the end. I found Nick to be a strong, person that would do anything to protect what was his.

ISIS Terrorists film a beheading on the bow of the Sea Empress which is then broadcast to the world. Marsha and Danny's Security Team is augmented by the FBI, a Special Contracted Investigator to Scotland Yard, the US Navy and US Coast Guard after an attack similar to the 9/11 attack. As a result of this attack the President asks Congress to Declare War on ISIS and our Allies rally to join forces with the USA! The President, Prime Minister of England along with the Canadian Prime Minister meet aboard the Sea Empress to plan a joint response! It might be a good read for the current occupant of our White House to learn a bit about presidential leadership.A great read that will drag you into the thick of the fray, and look for a followup as well!

I still struggle with the conversations of the characters. Language is often corny, and reminds me of an old 40s or 50s detective mystery, where story was good but conversations was almost laughable. I know this is probably the hardest part to write and make believable. But the conversations need to add mystery, intrigue. and anticipation to the story. Once he captures that these it will be a 4 or 5 star book. I will continue to read as I have read some of his fact based books and they are very good.
