From: Venus, Goddess of Love, 120 Main, Mt. Olympus

To: Stacy Temple, lapsed temptress

Stacy, Stacy, Stacy.

You were so promising at the beginning: Sexy, smart, personable and funny. Great on dates and really great afterward—if you know what I mean. But this is a sad state of affairs; or, in your case, non-affairs! It's been nearly an entire year and you haven't had your way with even ONE eligible male. You've been working so hard concocting sexy lingerie for Thongs.com—and really, Stacy, if that little pink velvet bustier didn't put you in the mood, I don't know what to say!—that you haven't even tried to be coaxed out of your own thong.com!

Are you listening, Stacy? Seven days to find the perfect man—or else!

The Accidental Virgin: A Novel, by Valerie Frankel

From Booklist Stacey Temple, a designer at thongs.com, hasn't had a man in her life since she broke up with Brian almost a year ago. Not having a lover hasn't bothered her much, until she reads an article about women who haven't had sex in a year being "revirginized." Stacey has a week before she hits the year mark, and she's determined to get laid before then. But luck isn't on her side: a handsome blind date turns her down because he senses she only wants sex, the 20-year-old son of one of her bosses has performance problems, and her ex's new fiancee turns up at an extremely inopportune time. Stacey starts to get desperate, turning first to a female coworker and then to her best friend, Charlie, a handsome playboy. Much hilarity ensues, but Stacey remains unsatisfied and inching ever closer to revirginization. As she begins to doubt herself, a handsome neighbor--who might be able to please her sexually and romantically-- catches her eye. Her adventures are often laugh-out-loud funny, making it impossible not to root for Frankel's plucky, determined heroine. Kristine HuntleyCopyright © American Library Association. This is a funny book, full of sex (or almost sex). Let me explain: The story is about a woman, Stacy, who is one week away from the anniversary of the last time she had sex. She reads that being celibate for a whole year makes you a renewed virgin. Stacy is horrified to think she's a sexual zero at age 32, so she sets out to fix her little problem. She has no trouble meeting men (or women). The problems are in the men she meets. Won't say what happens on her dismal dates because Frankel takes great pains to come up with creative and surprising obstacles for Stacy's de-revirginization. Sexual misadventure would be enough for me, but Frankel makes the romantic quest suspenseful. I had to know what happened next. And I was completely satisfied (as it were) by the ending.

I am a huge H.G. fan, and had to read The Accidental Virgin right away to see what she has gotten herself into. I'm relieved to report that she has made an excellent choice, confirming my believe that she is not only gorgeous, but smart, too. The book: deeply amusing. Laugh-out-loud, actually. Sexy, but in a funny way, not purple-prosey like romance novels. Love the New York details, and the description of working for a dot.com startup. The pages nearly turned themselves. It'll be an excellent movie, lots of great cameo casting opportunities. The main character goes on a dozen dates with weirdos; Brad Pitt as the best friend? George Clooney as the Russian doctor? Tom Cruise as the dot.com millionaire? (As if.) I can almost see it.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A Fun, Amusing Read By Elizabeth Hendry The Accidental Virgin is a fun, breezy, amusing read--nothing to tax the intellect, but sure to amuse. It is the story of Stacey Temple, a thirty-something singleton who works at thongs.com (you know the novel can't be too serious with a job like that). Stacey figures out that she has gone almost an entire year without sex (and barely noticed!). She becomes obsessed with avoiding becoming an "accidental virgin"--or someone who has gone without for 365 days. She's got a week left and a couple promising candidates, but nothing seems to go right for poor Stacey. This is a funny and very fluffy novel. You can read it in one sitting, and you will enjoy yourself.

By Lobo Exit Here is a gripping, yet profound novel which derives a special fascination by the encounter of the protagonist Yuri, a leader of an anti-terrorist unit, and a Buddhist Lama and the development of their connection. After brutal fights against terrorists the battle-experienced Russian Yuri has to learn that anger and obsession with revenge during the prosecution of Ali Moussa, the antagonist, can render Yuri vulnerable himself. By the meeting with the Lama and the love for a courageous Italian-American journalist he understands that anger blinds him and makes him weak, while compassion makes him strong and protects him. He thereby gains a real opportunity to continue this development by a rebirth as a protector.

Excellent and highly recommended By Uriel Excellent and highly recommended!!“Exit Here” is a unique inspirational journey, in which Beatrice Franz combines in perfect balance cultural, historical, philosophical and religious teachings, all embedded in a well thought out and intelligently written adventure novel. It is rare to find Buddhist teachings about death, intermediary- -state and rebirth so harmoniously interwoven into a novel about violence, fear, courage and freedom. Bea Franz uses her author’s capabilities and Lama Ole Nydahl’s teachings to transport us through life’s journey and successfully convey to us in a convincing manner the meaning of the Lama’s words: “Death is not a problem. The problem is life without meaning”.

By Cateye Exit Here is a fast-paced fictional story with an extraordinary view of things due to real Buddhist teachings. The whole story is very intense, a read that draws you in with increasingly gripping suspense. It has a competent and believable protagonist whose motivations and choices make sense - and while other stories endwith the death of the main character, this one just gets more interesting.Inspiring and powerful!

In 1934, Norman Lewis and his brother-in-law Eugene Corvaja travelled across the breadth of Spain on what turned out to be the eve of the murderous civil war. Commissioned by his Sicilian father-in-law to locate the tomb of the last Spanish Corvaja in the cathedral of Seville, when public transport came to a standstill, the two walked more than a hundred miles to Madrid, and were then forced via Portugal to Seville. Lewis makes light of being caught in the crossfire of a fractious country, sometimes literally, and glories in the beauty of nature and the common humanity of the Spaniards he meets on the way.

The Tomb in Seville, by Norman Lewis

From Publishers Weekly Acclaimed travel writer Lewis (Naples '44; Golden Earth; etc.) died in 2003 at age 93; this is his final book. In it, he recounts traveling through Spain in 1934 with his brother-in-law Eugene Corvaja to find the Corvaja family tomb in Seville. Their plans for a straightforward north-to-south journey, beginning in San Sebastián, are altered by uprisings foretelling the impending Spanish Civil War. Lewis and Corvaja's ever-changing travel plans lead them on a circuitous route—they wind up going through Portugal—and shape the episodic tone of this memoir, in which each town and encounter provides its own story. Lewis eschews delving into the complex politics of 1930s Spain to focus instead on the social ramifications of the country's political situation. While Corvaja yearns to join the battle for Spain's future, Lewis remains an outsider, with his sharp eye set firmly on observing Spain's people and places. Whether he's capturing the comedy of trying to find a suitable cafe in Madrid while a street fight rages, depicting the isolated wildlife of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains or commenting on the "cheap and cheerful" lives of the farmers' daughters he and Corvaja meet on a train, his well-crafted descriptions are honest and evocative. Lewis and Corvaja eventually find the tomb, but it's been destroyed, which is actually quite fitting, reminding readers that the journey is the story. From The New Yorker Lewis, who died in 2003, at the age of ninety-five, was often described as the finest travel writer of the last century. In his final book, he revisits the material of his first one, a journey through Spain with his brother-in-law in 1934. It is a tale of two Spains: in the harsh terrain of the countryside, the friends are continually amazed by the extreme poverty and primitive existence of the peasants, many of whom still live in caves. Meanwhile, in the cities, skirmishes between Fascists and Reds, which later erupted into civil war, are already under way. In Atocha, where the travellers narrowly escape being mown down by machine-gun fire, they find the main café, amid the pandemonium, still open and busy. When their train pulls into Madrid, a gun battle is raging, and Lewis, taking cover, notes the words on a travel poster: "Under the Blue Skies of Spain Cares Are Forgotten." Copyright © 2005 The New Yorker

From Booklist This is famed British travel writer Lewis' last book, written before he died in 2003 at age 95. He and his brother-in-law first visited Spain in 1934, traveling to Madrid and then, by way of Portugal, to Seville. Lewis chronicled that trip in Spanish Adventure (1935), and this last book is a memory of that particular journey. Lewis remembers attending a Communist Party cell meeting, walking through a rain forest (they walked hundreds of miles), riding trains and trams, and finding his in-laws' family tomb in Seville. They witnessed the insurrection of October 1934, walked into a fight between the People's Army and government forces, and attended a bullfight that they found disgusting. Reading the author's account of his travels in a country on the brink of war is almost as satisfying as being there. George CohenCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Before death, Lewis looks back at 1st journey By Lynn Harnett Exquisite descriptions and a youthful disregard for danger mark Lewis' last book before his death at 95 in 2003. This final volume in a long and lauded career of travel writing and fiction looks back at the journey that got him started in 1934. It's actually a retelling of his first book, a mostly forgotten Wodehouse-inspired piece called "Spanish Adventure."The journey begins at the behest - and expense - of Lewis' father-in-law Ernesto Corvaja, a Sicilian of Spanish ancestry. In hopes of finding his family fondly remembered in Seville, he sends his son Eugene Corvaja and Lewis to Spain to pay their respects to the Corvaja tomb. However, Spain is on the brink of its bloody civil war between the fascists and communists. The young men cross the border from France, with some delays and difficulties, to bask in the tranquil flow of life in San Sebastian. In contrast to France, "No one was in a hurry, or carried a parcel, and there were no clocks." Despite a few minor inconveniences - disrupted phone service, a sightseeing drive cut short by armed guards, a sinister police visit to their hotel - the two are chiefly discomfited by the closing of the local cabaret and equally reassured by its abrupt reopening. The next day an official "State of Alarm" is declared, the trains stop running and both experienced "a sensation that the personality of this town had undergone a remarkable change. The people of San Sebastian, as we had agreed, seemed to set great store by matters of personal deportment." But, "at this moment San Sebastian seemed full of running figures and queues had formed at the doors of food shops with desperate would-be customers struggling to get in. Such was the confusion that even the paseos were abandoned." The paseo being a delightful, healthful evening stroll at which the citizenry, particularly the young, could see and be seen. The upheaval continues, on again, off again. Plans are derailed but not their goal. They will reach Seville, zigzagging across Spain, taking a side jog through Portugal, moving by bus, train, truck, car and foot. Through it all, Lewis is alive to fresh enjoyments. Mounting a decrepit bus (even the driver at first refuses to board), they cross a spectacular mountain range. "Our exhaust thundered and rumbled as we hustled through narrow, rocky valleys, dislodging flocks of jackdaws and doves from the trees like alternating avalanches of soot and snow."But first, Lewis and Corvaja must wend their way to Madrid, in hopes of a train to Seville. Various kindly Spaniards provide rides in defiance of the official "State of Alarm," but 100 miles from the nearest train to Madrid, all private vehicles grind to a halt. So the young men walk. The country is rural and poor and many people live in caves they have dug out of the ground. "These could have been villagers in cottages which through an earthquake of exceptional violence had toppled into holes in the earth from which roofs, chimneys, and even a window sometimes appeared." But a second glance shows the structures to be deliberately constructed, "rent-free and cool in summer."Corvaja is something of a naturalist and Lewis' welcoming curiosity finds rewards in every bend in the road. His descriptions of the sun-warmed, sparsely populated plains with their silent inhabitants who ring church bells as the strangers pass to warn the next village of their approach, segue into chilly "winter-scented" rains which fall on isolated rain forests teeming with wildlife, which give way to fierce partisans in Zaragosa, a city of extreme wealth and poverty.Lewis is essentially an easygoing person. When Corvaja informs him fairly early on that he is a card-carrying communist who fully intends to join the insurrection, Lewis takes this in stride. Only when Corvaja is on the brink of running off does Lewis dissuade him with a very reasonable, British argument of family obligation. Not that Corvaja seems all that difficult to dissuade. The "Red Army" never materializes and the promised legions turn out to be small rag-tag bands that melt away into the countryside leaving red flags behind. But there's plenty of danger.Snipers in Madrid force peaceful citizens to move about with their hands in the air, or sometimes on all fours. In search of libation and a bit of social life, the pair finds themselves herded at gunpoint, questioned by the police and drinking in bullet-studded bars. Later, fleeing through brambles, Lewis tears open his leg on barbed wire. But his attitude remains understated in a way that captures the youthful sense of adventure, along with the old man's unstated marvel at the young's casual risk of life. Written from notes and journals as well as memory, the journey conveys immediacy, not nostalgia, but also conveys the fondness of an old man for an experience that led to a lifelong thirst for more. The Portsmouth Herald, April 3, 2005

A read-in-one-sitting travel journal By Jay Stainbrook There's no agenda in this book, but the observations are so keen and the prose is so clear that you will find yourself connecting the episodes with themes of your own. The author's character is non-existant and you can substitute yourself easily enough. Never boring, I easily could have read a hundred pages more.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Snapshots of Spain in 1934 By R. M. Peterson For his last book, written in his mid-eighties, Norman Lewis recounts experiences from a trip he took sixty years earlier with his brother-in-law to Spain, ostensibly to search for information on his in-laws' family history in Seville. As things happened, the trip occurred in late 1934, in the midst of civil unrest that was one of the precursors of the Spanish Civil War that broke out in full force less than two years later. Lewis was present during the five-day "Battle of Madrid" and was forced to crawl across streets while gunfire whistled overhead. To me, the more interesting incidents are not those relating to political turmoil but rather to everyday life in the Iberian peninsula (his trip also took him through Portugal) -- such things as a daily promenade in a public garden of wet nurses clutching their infant charges to their bosoms, women queuing up at a slaughterhouse to drink fresh blood from the severed veins of animals for a boost of vitality, and the communal burning of a young woman thought to be possessed by an evil spirit. And there are numerous vivid verbal snapshots, such as the one of the Portuguese village of Villa Real de Santo Antonio: "Despite the grandiose name it appeared more as an untidy village with dogs disputing the rubbish in its streets, and most of the inhabitants looked like criminal suspects temporarily free while awaiting imprisonment in chains or deportation."But in the end THE TOMB IN SEVILLE is on the thin side, both too short and too impressionistic (not so surprising after sixty years). It does not measure up to "Voices of the Old Sea", the only other book by Norman Lewis I have read. While THE TOMB IN SEVILLE is worth reading, no one need regret not getting around to it.

By Amazon Customer I recommend Virgin Queen by Catherine Corman to anyone who loves poetry, history and photography. The portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I, written in very short to longer poems, captures the essence of her inner life. The exquisitely written poems take the reader on an historical journey depicting Queen Elizabeth I’s feelings and sentiments toward her own life, as well as that of her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots. The accompanying photographs, taken by Catherine Corman, provide superb balance to her prose.

Exquisite Book Imagining Queen Elizabeth I's Inner Life By Suzanne Webster "Virgin Queen" is a beautifully written book imagining Queen Elizabeth I’s thoughts and emotions during the most meaningful times of her life — as well as the most turbulent. It is part of a series of books and short films by Catherine Corman that explore the inner lives of literary, historic and art world figures using spare prose and Virgin Queen photographs.I read her first one, a poetic interpretation of Joseph Cornell’s Dreams, and recommend this book to anyone who loves poetry or is interested in British Royal history.

By David Zilkha A collection of 41 sublime prose poems of between 1 and a bit and 14 lines long, that introduces a completely new genre to world literature: the capture of a subject's essence and of their place in history in as succinct and poetic a manner as possible. I've never read or even heard of anything quite like it! The history is accurate (it helps to know that Elizabeth I was daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, half sister of and successor to Mary Tudor, aka Bloody Mary, and cousin of Mary Queen of Scots who was caught plotting against Elizabeth's life. And that Elizabeth's quotations all come from Edith Sitwell's biography), the photos (also taken by Catherine Corman) exquisite, and the subjects of the poems carefully chosen with an inspired touch (for example 'Colours at the Court of Queen Mary in Anticipation of Her Marriage') and the poems beautifully written. Buy it, read it, and be entranced!!!

Andrew Mansell, perturbed by the suicide of a colleague, questions the nature of his marriage and its inevitable compromises. As the gulf widens between him and his wife, he takes what he sees as an irrevocable decision. He has reckoned, however, without the power of his family and friends to impose their will and the price he will pay. As their ranks close about him, Andrew must question the value of freedom.

As a man who has always tried to do the right thing, looked after his children, provided for his family and worked hard at a teaching career, he finds himself in a position to wonder where this is all going. What is his place in life? Has he the right to be happy? Can he be happy? He takes a thoughtful and thorough look at his marriage. He questions the patterns developed by himself and his wife over their years together and comes to a realisation that his happiness is his to make. He can change the path of his destiny.I enjoyed this book immensely. I liked the honesty of Andrew's thoughts, feelings and opinions. The reader journeys with Andrew as he looks at his relationships, ultimately taking a leap of faith, experiencing unexpected and sometimes hostile reactions from friends and loved ones.I liked Andrew as a character and enjoyed his quiet thoughts and the companionship of his dog.I have previously enjoyed other books by this author, including 'Three Women of a Certain Age'. It was interesting to read this book which takes the viewpoint of a man 'of a certain age'. In my opinion it is the best novel by James Warden so far and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good read.

From its founding in 1814 by William Barclay Foster, Lawrenceville has been the center of historic events. During the Civil War, the riverside community became home to the Allegheny Arsenal, where 78 people perished in an explosion in 1862, making it the worst civilian disaster of the war. Lawrenceville evolved into a lively, walkable neighborhood that barely slept because of the high volume of shift workers at places such as Iron City Brewery, St. Francis Hospital, and the steel mills. Businesses, churches, all-night diners, and other gathering places were easily accessible to residents, and families became closely associated with the landmarks where they worked, worshipped, and socialized. Having celebrated its 200th birthday in 2014, Lawrenceville remains a bustling community with a vitality equal to that of the immigrant days, and it continues to be a place of camaraderie where individuals are dedicated to their neighborhood.

AMERICAN NOCTURNE, Elisabeth Stevens’ sixth book of poetry, is unfettered, wide-ranging. Unlike her fifth collection, SIRENS’ SONGS, which was selected by Kirkus Reviews as one of the hundred best indie books of 2011 and focused intensely on romantic and sexual liaisons, AMERICAN NOCTURNE explores a world-wide geography and more, ranging expansively from continent to continent, from reality to dream. AMERICAN NOCTURNE begins with a Manhattan sunset (the title poem) moves across the country, concludes in a sun-animated hospital solarium back in New York City. In between, the poet visits a North Carolina pizza parlor, a tour boat in Dunedin, New Zealand, and drives a mysterious passenger on a bureaucratic, night errand before realizing that her companion is “no longer living.” Later, in “Voyage,” an ancient death ship ventures to “the edge of the earth,” and, in “Arachne,” a powerful spider offers the possibility of transfiguration. In “Planting Trees,” the death of trees is by the assertion: “I’ll plant as long as I can.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Observations of biological objects almost seem like summary case studies By Critically thinking Searcher This short book of twenty-four new poems is divided in three sections, whether or not by sense of category probably depends on the reader. The title poem deals with the inexorable passage of darkness in an impressionistic and representational way. The book in general contains many instances of temporal and spatial merging, sometimes physical, sometimes what I view as supernatural imagining—“could-it-be-that-way portraying.” In other cases, perception and change of frozen precipitation--circumstances that they relate to, or how they co-occur--are the backdrop. Connections or their lack are often a mode. Observations of biological objects almost seem like summary case studies. Pressures of personal interactions including social posturing are plopped down. Water as venue is incorporated. The spider's silk web domain is like a water column profile. This volume is a very personalized look at real and imagined experiences that does not involve many individual human characters. It presumes a fair amount of classical and specialty knowledge on the part of the reader or the willingness to acquire it. I think it is worth perusing for most. You are unlikely to find anything else quite like it. But, if you are overwhelmed with contemplating death, it may not be for you.

I really likes the modern feel of the poems. The were easy enough to understand, but had incredibly depth. One of my favorite poems of the volume is "Lost Petunias". For poetry lovers who have not picked this one up yet, I say give it a try! There are poems about life, nature, travel and loads more!

Poemas y más poemas I (Tomo) (Volume 1) (Spanish Edition), by Inocencio Martín Hernández

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Eternal City By Linda McHenry Within the political City of Rome, the Venerable City of the Vatican, and the much smaller but even more powerful crucible of the human heart, the Twentieth Century makes its debut. This is a story of the heroic love of the woman, Roma, for Rossi, who is the people's hope for a new political order, for the end of tyranny under the threacherous thumb of a Baron who is without scruples, and of a humble Pope who struggles to find the Church's proper place in the new order of things. The Eternal City is brilliantly written, and deserves a place on every bookshelf.

I never leave reviews but I stumbled upon it two days ago and read all four books already! I have a huge pet peeve of a series not incorporating all of the characters throughout the series but Ms. Aster does a great job of having a balance between telling the main characters story while still including information from the other characters so their story continues as well. Would be great as a stand-alone novel but I highly recommend reading the entire series in order. Definitely worth the time! Great job!

By Heather It's nice to read a book that is all love, even if some don't realize it at first..no major violence or cheating in this one just all romance which made me smile throughout it... A must read, enjoy it you won't be disappointed...

When she went into labor, he drove her to the hospital and has since been an honorary uncle to Abby. But Bess is firmly in the friend category until Tyler is assigned a job that will have him in town for 12 months. Then she becomes a housemate. And it is good to have a Ranger close by when she starts seeing a man who looks a lot like her abusive ex around town. Especially since he has a daughter he knows nothing about.I read for happy endings and really enjoy when a book delivers not only a solid HEA, but also wraps it up in a warm fuzzy. And Aster did just that with this book. A book as satisfying as this one is hard to find, so if you like military romance tied up with a bow, you will want to give it a try. Like her other books in the series, this book can standalone.

Jake and Angel's A to Z Adventures in Austin (Volume 1), by Mary Beth Harris

About the Author The idea to write her book came from the desire to share the cool places in Austin with her young nieces in hopes they would want to visit her someday. When she realized that other people actually liked the book for their children, she decided it would be fun to combine her love of travel and dogs into her books while exploring and photographing other popular cities. The revised version of the first book became “Jake and Angel’s A to Z Adventures in Austin”. Mary Beth had the opportunity to live overseas as a child, and realized the value of being able to see some of the world’s famous places in person. As a teacher, she realized that many children don’t have families that get to travel, so creating fun books with real photos of the well known sights seemed like the perfect solution. She hopes that her books will expose people to sights in various cities they have never seen and that children are inspired to pursue their own adventures. Mary Beth plans to write more books about popular places and things to do all over the world. The author currently resides in Austin, TX and is available for author visits and speaking engagements. A portion of sales is donated to a local animal rescue organization.

It is fun, interactive, informative, and encourages the entire family to go on adventures together. Whether you live in Austin or not, you will learn new things about the Music Capitol of the World. And you may even find yourself on a road trip to see something new in person. The interactive scan codes throughout the book give it added punch and let children really experience the place they are learning about. And the way Jake and Angel lead the adventure is so fun. Kids will have a great time searching for them throughout the book, as they get to experience the pups individual personalities.

Footprint books are incredibly comprehensive and a good travel companion. There are not many good travel guides to Valencia, Spain. This one helps with planning and while on the trip. It is surprisingly small -- only 103 pages -- and small dimensions for easy traveling in a backpack or a wide pocket. Most other Footprint guides are hundreds of pages. Too bad it does not have color photos or maps.

In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this audiobook abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning. This is not merely a travel guide; it is a beautifully written and highly personal view into one man’s journey and the insights gained by abandoning what is comfortable and routine.

“David Miller’s AWOL makes you feel the pain and joy of an Appalachian Trail thru-hike...In vivid colors, David paints a picture of his memorable journey.” – Larry Luxenberg Director of the Appalachian Trail Museum

Amazon.com Review David Miller's Top Five Items You Might Not Think to Pack for a Long-Distance Trek (But Will Wish You Did) Scissors: Scissors are better than a knife for common tasks like opening food packaging, cutting moleskin, or trimming your mustache. I carry the Leatherman Micra, which has a very functional pair of scissors and a knife blade. Suntan Lotion: The AT is known for rain, cold and for long walks through the "green tunnel." Yet every year, especially before the trees regain their leaves, hikers will get sunburned. Chafing powder: Hikers disagree about whether hiking uphill or downhill is more demanding, but they all agree that hiking with chaffed, burning skin is less tolerable than the ups and downs. Body Glide is another popular treatment. Trash Bag: Pack it in; pack it out... and remember to have something to pack it out in. A gallon-sized zippered bag usually suffices. Belt pouch: Backpack manufacturers have caught on, and many now offer packs with accessible pouches sewn onto the straps on their packs. If your pack doesn’t have belt pouches, buy add-ons. Keep your camera in your belt pouch, and you’ll take many more pictures than you would if your camera was in your pack. Also keep your spoon at the ready; you never know when your hiking partner might leave his food unattended. Photos from the Appalachian Trail Click to see larger images

“AWOL on the Appalachian Trail offers readers an intimate grasp and vivid portrayal of the pure beauty and inspiring landscape of the Appalachian mountains and valleys… Whether an armchair traveler or an active outdoors enthusiast, AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is very highly recommended reading as a first-hand narrative of an incredible journey spanning the entire length of the Appalachian country.” – Midwest Book Review

“Readers who are considering the Trail or who simply enjoy being in the outdoors will find this book most appealing, but Miller's talent should bring him an even larger audience.” - Jeff Minick, Smoky Mountain News

“Miller is a wonderful writer who expresses the emotions as well as the facts of the world's most famous hiking trail… I enjoyed [AWOL on the Appalachian Trail] more than any AT book I've read.” - Robert Hughes, Florida Today Newspaper

He rejects his computer programming job, and with the consent of his family, starts up the AT. Thus the title.Near the midpoint of the story, there is a quote: "too much hard work, too much pain, too much time away from my family ..." but he continues. This is a success story. Though he does not say so, David is one of the stronger AT thru-hikers, big miles, day after day. All the usual injuries occur, but these are endured, rather than used as a reason to leave the trail. There is a community of hikers, and the sharing of intense experiences day after day is almost addictiveThe reader begins to get a feel for the rituals of shelters and in trail towns. After reading the book, a potential AT hiker should feel much more comfortable with what they are going to encounter. As I read the book, I kept visualizing the AT trails vs the ones I have hiked in California and in Europe - the AT seems much more difficult, though you have more frequent opportunities to get off the trail. The overall tone of the book is strongly positive. That's a little difficult to explain, since there is a lot about hardship, but trust me, you will understand when you read it.I recommend this to any long distance hiker, and particularly to someone planning to walk the Appalachian Trail.

I have to say that it is one of the most enjoyable, honest, and inspiring accounts that I have read in a long time. This is the best book on the AT that I have yet found.David Miller / Awol describes his thru-hike on the trail from Georgia to Maine in vivid detail; you really do feel like you are on the trail with him, sharing the highs and lows of the challenge. The conditions of the hike, the fascinating people that he met, the personal and physical challenges, and the gorgeous scenery are all poured into the pages for the reader to soak in.Although I have not hiked the trail myself, I imagine that this book is as close to doing it yourself as it comes. His ability to narrate the trials and tribulations without downplaying or changing the finer details was appreciated, especially for someone like myself who aspires to one day rise to the challenge of the AT.The companion web site is fantastic, putting the book in perspective with a wide array of dazzling photos. I found myself referencing them many times as I read new sections of the book. This book inspired me to take the challenge of hiking the AT and change my life. How many times can a book do that?Final thoughts -- highly recommended. 5 stars.

Strong writing and accounting from all of the parts of the trail make it a great book for those armchair AT Hikers like myself. It is a nice mix of everyday life and what it takes on the trail, trail relationships (some good, some bad), and various observations on life and the trail. What makes it all that more surprising is it is a Self-Published book. It is definitely worthy of a more tangible publishing house. I have read other books that generalize large parts of the trail and spend more time on the spiritual, philosophical part of why they are doing the trail but David Miller does not make this a predominant part of the book. Additionally I appreciated hearing about parts of the trail that most books seem to skip and it is a timely account from the year 2003.I also recommend Mic Lowther's book, "Walking North" for another nice combination of trail accountability and philosophy. Bill Schuettes "White Blaze Fever" is good for a great "nuts and bolts" account of the trail.
