Target Demo: Age 3 - Adulthood. “Bad Hair Does Not Exist!/“Pelo Malo No Existe!” – is a book with an anti-bullying message that reinforces respect for individualism. Hispanic and Black children are exposed to the divisive and bullying term, “bad hair,” within their own communities. The term "bad hair" or "pelo malo" is used to describe hair that is usually of curlier texture or of a thick and coarse density. This is irresponsible and often contributes to a child’s low self - esteem, dividing both communities and families. The book’s purpose is to empower all children by giving them alternate terms to describe their hair, and teaching them the importance of respecting one another’s differences.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Unique collection of poetry By TFLReader Dark Romeo is a short but interesting volume of poetry from a non-native English speaker. Perhaps because it is from someone who doesn’t speak English naturally it struck a different chord to the small selection of poetry I have previously read, but I did find it rather endearing in an innocent and unspoiled kind of way. There are some spelling and grammatical issues which are common in independently published titles, but if you can see past them you may like this rather unique title.

George Gibson is determined to check off the last item on his bucket list: a trip across America. He hops in his RV to visit - and sketch - the buildings and places across America that he and his wife never got to see. When his daughter learns of a young boy forced to give up a beloved Saint Bernard named Lewis, she suggests George adopt the animal as a traveling companion. The dog even fits perfectly in the sidecar of George's Vespa motor scooter. As George warms to his travel mate, he begins talking to Lewis, sharing stories from his life and his unrealized dreams. Along the way, Lewis seems to attract people and make instant friends with the quirky and charming, funny and odd people who cross their path. Could it be that his new friends - and this strange dog - will help George to finally confront the secret he's been hiding? Can Lewis's devotion to the truth be enough to save George from himself?

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Swell story By Antigone Walsh This is a story about a man with nothing to live for, a little boy who hopes to live and the dog that that helps them see the truth. George is a widower. Laden with guilt, he plans one last cross country RV trip. Alex is a sick child who has developed severe allergies to his beloved St. Bernard, Lewis. It will take a year for allergy shots to take effect so George, under pressure from his daughter, reluctantly agrees to a canine companion for his road trip. Lewis is the ultimate canine counselor. He is a great listener and loves unconditionally. Resistance is futile. This is a nice little story sure to appeal to dog lovers. The author portrays Lewis beautifully. Lewis is man's best friend, healing the hearts of his human companions. true it is fairly predictable and most of the book involves George's musings. It is gentle and heartwarming and does justice to dogs, seniors and kids.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Sometimes, listening to a dog is exactly what you need By Dogs & Horses Lewis won me over. I typically don't read faith based literature of any sort because I find most of it overbearing and the writing or plot is forgotten in the author's urge to send a message. Fortunately, Conversations with Saint Bernard doesn't fall into this trap. This is a very soft, gentle story about lost people finding themselves, finding each other, and a path through the darkness of guilt, grief, illness and emotional transition. Who else could guide them except a gentle giant of a Saint Bernard?Lewis seems to have a gift of full understanding of and the ability to communicate back to the people who need his compassion, guidance and love the most. As a life long dog lover, owner and rescuer this concept doesn't surprise me in the least - nor is it remotely out of the ordinary to think of God or Forces of Good (or whatever you want to call it) working through the pure hearts of our dogs in our care. The author handles this nicely throughout the book and gives Lewis a full personality without making him less of a dog. During a trip across the nation, we watch the bond between George and Lewis evolve as well as George's own relationship with himself evolve and that was nice. There's a selection of questions at the end to open a discussion on the book's messages for a club reading if you're so inclined. I may recommend this one to my neighbor for ladies quilting group actually. I'm glad I read this book...I put it away and hugged all six of my sweet dogs and I swear they all said "We love you too."

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Exceeds in excellence By Trudie Barreras One of the major perks of being an Amazon Vine reviewer for me has been the opportunity to become acquainted with Abingdon Press. I have found that virtually every book I have chosen from the “Christian Books and Bibles” section of “Vine for All” has been interesting, uplifting, and thoroughly enjoyable. “Conversations with Saint Bernard” by Jim Kraus, however, “exceeds in excellence”.The basic plot is of course simple and straightforward. George Gibson, still grieving the death of his wife, plans a cross-country trip as a valedictory. Alex Burden, after a precarious childhood with repeated heart surgeries, seems “on the mend” until it turns out he’s allergic to his beloved dog Lewis. Through the intervention of Providence working through George’s daughter Tess and Alex’s mother Trudy, it eventuates that Lewis becomes George’s traveling companion, but much more as well, during the time it takes for Alex to take desensitizing shots. The dog is psychic, or perhaps an angel in disguise, and serves not only to bring George in contact with several people along the way that he “needs” to meet, but also insists that he confront and deal with the truth. The story is lively, amusing while of significance relevant to the issues it resolves, and develops the “special” character of Lewis without overplaying the anthropomorphism. Other characters, as well as the under-girding theme of how prayer does (and doesn’t) work make this a story well worth reading and sharing with loved ones.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. FOOLED. NO itineraries, NO real content, NO depth.... Just Awful Writing By Stella Galloway I really wanted to enjoy this book but I could not.1. There are NO ITINERARIESBy calling yourself “Ultimate Itinerary Planner” I expected to see at least 1 itinerary which I could follow or reference. But there is NONE!2. Covers just 4 cities in briefWell, at least you could give me a good overview of Japan. BUT, there are only 4 cities included, plus a brief blurb about Okinawa. Japan is this magnificent country with years of history, culture, and phenomenal diversity of experiences and there are so many jewels in this beautiful archipelago..3. Lack of Depth WhatsoeverThis book has less information than a blog post. It's not EVEN enough to be called a primer.4. Terrible Writing and GrammarThe writing style is really dull. My fifth-grader could write better sentences.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I guess this is a general Japan book, but ... By Gerry Mahoney I guess this is a general Japan book, but there is still just too little information on each of the cities here. I wasn't expecting an all-out, Lonely Planet style guide for $.99, but this is far, far from being helpful for my trip planning.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not your average travel guide By Amazon Customer Here you get what you need and only that. Because let’s face it, most travel books are either encyclopedias with a load of useless informations to skim through or flyer-sized lists of point of interest which you will end up checking on tripadvisor anyway. This book on the other hand is just what you need. You get the dates of festivals, the addresses, very clear maps, etc. It will probably save you an average of twenty hours randomly posting questions in travel forums and will relieve you from the frustrating fear of missing something.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Short, precise and interesting By Cedric Grace I don’t really like reading extremely long books because I don’t have that much time. When I saw this book on Europe travel, I decided to give it a try. I really liked it because it started directly with the main subject matter. I was really hooked to this book and I have to say that it is precise and to the point. After finishing this book, I decided to prepare my plan to Europe again. Overall, a very good book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This place is amazing from what I've heard! By Mohammed Khan This is one of those places I definitely want to visit. It was worth reading this book and now I think I'll be prepared.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Has everything I needed in a guide. By Queen Carmilla Officially going to Amsterdam in a couple of months! Nice! But the main places I really want to see isn't enough to maximize my 5-day stay so I need some more ideas. This book gave me a ton of them and even some good places to eat complete with prices. I may update this review if things have changed since but given the amount of effort in making this book (beautiful pics included and a useful map), I am confident this guide will help me throughout my trip.

By Walter Harper A Tour of Historic Lake Worth Florida; its Cottages & Architectural Treasuresby Marion Cone & Walter Harper is interesting and informative.  Local history and architecture should always go hand-in-hand.  If I ever move to Florida, it will definitely be to Lake Worth! -- Robert Friedman retired Museum Educator, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

By Peggy A Tour of Historic Lake Worth Florida; its Cottages & Architectural Treasures is an intriguing, informative, and totally original book. It combines historical information, architectural detail, and an instructive overview of Lake Worth Florida’s unique historical districts and their cottages into a tasty package that will appeal to Lake Worth residents and tourists alike. Well-written and researched by Marion Cone and attractively conceived and designed by Walter Harper who also took the contemporary photographs, it makes for a fascinating read. The town has gone through good and bad times, but now is in a renaissance thanks to devoted residents who have treasured the historic buildings. “Where summer spends the winter” was an optimistic slogan thought up by Lake Worth’s Mayor Toot in 1929 that is still appropriate for the town.---Peggy Campbell, Executive Director, Washington Square Music Festival

It makes me want to move there when I'm ready to retire to a pretty and historical location. Its architectural treasures indeed do show a wonderful variety of Turn of the Century Cottages.Among the pictures of these beautiful Cottages are both historical and personal whimsical remarks, which add humor to the mix. Everything you ever wanted to know about Historic Lake Worth's architecture you'll find between these pages.Fine job, Walter Harper and Marion Cone!Rosemary Calabretta, author-Vinnie Bartender to the Mob.

By Gabriel Carceles I received this article from Amazon last July (2010)in the course of my trip to Spain as I wanted to listen to this marvelous masterpiece read longtime ago.My disappointment was awful at its reception. Contrarily to the advertisement, the version, indicated as SPANISH, is in fact in ENGLISH. Besides, the CDs cointained in the box were only the 1st Volume of the work.I checked by listening at the first CD and found the English translation nice and very fine, though NOT my cup of tea, as can be imagined as Spanish is my mother tongue.I immediately contacted AMAZON and reported this failure and was requested to send back the article. So I did, paying a shipping return cost of the equivalent of USD 30, the minimum available in Spain to the US for such a parcel. My card was credited with the cost originally charged PLUS USD 3.50 versus my payment for USD 30, as this seems to be the rule of the game......I have sent three messages to Amazon in the last month to stress the nonsense that represents my paying around USD 27 for the enormous mistake made by THEM. I am not asking for any compensation but simply for MY money and perhaps some apologies. So far, nothing.I am sure there is some oversight and, following Amazon's tradition, the matter will be correctly settled.

By Mia Johnson Portrait Kerala by Aruna Nambiar is a wonderful composition which provided me every piece of information that I need to know about Kerala and I must say that this book made me enjoy my whole leisure time. I am really thankful to Saibal Das who has been very dedicated in providing clear, attractive and colorful pictures and this book flows with pictures along with its discussion under the topic. The book covers many aspects of Kerala such as its historical background, culture, geographical features and nature. This book can be considered as a supportive tourist guide as well as it includes weather conditions, monsoonal effects and tourist attractions in Kerala. The political state of this land is described in this book proving a informative approach to the day today life style in Kerala. This book mentions places with architectural importance, cultural pageants, festivals and faiths of people. Kerala comprises attractive arts-mainly dancing is covered in this book and I am really excited to see the things mentioned in this book with my own eyes. I am really planning to enjoy my next vacation in Kerala.

A nice overall view By Mana G This book is a nice 'overall' on Kerala- It balances a good amount of Kerala and the culture of its people, its history, and its geography. This book includes pictures, which are a nice touch, that are of high quality and relevant to what's being discussed at the time they are introduced, rather than random pictures here and there. Anything from flowers on the side of the road, to the natives, to a friendly picture of a squirrel with his nut made the passing from section to section quite nice. The content itself was very well written and thorough- it left me with no unanswered questions and a better understanding of Kerala and it's culture. All in all, this is a nice read- regardless of whether you read it because you want to travel there, you're researching it for a school project, or because you'd like to have something a little more interesting to talk about than what your baby ate today at the dinner table.

Insightful and written well By Lucidity The book covers many aspects of the unique state of Kerala, touching upon the distinct beauty of the environment, the people that inhabit the land and their respective cultural customs including holidays, religions, art & architecture, and cuisines common to the land.I found the rich history of Kerala to be especially interesting, as well as the geography, which from what I’ve gathered so far seems to be a big influence in the aforementioned. I must also note that the pictures in the book are wonderful and do the text much justice.

The first chapter begins: "Why haiku, or why poetry at all?" Then proceeds to answer both questions. After a brief history of haiku's origins the stage is set to have some fun. Yes, haiku can be serious, Zen like, even philosophical, but it can also be fun, both for the reader and the writer. Instead of just filling a book with haiku, the author, David Miller, leads us, chapter by chapter, through the many subjects that can be covered in three simple lines of twenty-seven, sometimes silly, syllables. The chapters include: Seasonal, Hiking, Seashore, Streetlamp, Just For Fun, Goin' to the Dogs, Sensual, Deeply Thought, and Garden haiku. Each chapter begins with an introduction telling why the author enjoys playing with words (even coining a few) in that particular realm. You are not only encouraged along the way to write on your own, you are given incomplete haiku at the end of each chapter to play around with (yes, there are answers later). It's a sneaky way of presenting a "How-To" book without it looking like a "How-to" book (oh, those devilish poets!). If you are looking for Zen, it's here too. But the author's Zen is explained in it's simplest form rather than through a deep and lengthy discourse. Your Zen is for you to find, and he leaves it at that! You may just unleash your inner poet (if you haven't already). Not sure what haiku or Zen is about, enter, and remember, lighten your load, cast out all the noise, relax, and above all, have fun! And, do over and over again, as necessary. (Don't worry about overdosing, and there are no dangerous side-effects.) This book would make a great companion to take along to the beach, to a park, take along on a hike, or wherever 'your' favorite spot is for personal time.

From the Publisher Library of Liberal Arts title.

From the Inside Flap An international bestseller that sold more than 300,000 copies when it first appeared in 1852, Uncle Tom's Cabin was dismissed by some as abolitionist propaganda; yet Tolstoy deemed it a great work of literature "flowing from love of God and man."Today, however, Harriet Beecher Stowe's stirring indictment of slavery is often confused with garish dramatizations that flourished for decades after the Civil War: productions that relied heavily on melodramatic simplifications of character totally alien to the original. Thus "Uncle Tom" has become a pejorative term for a subservient black, whereas Uncle Tom in the book is a man who, under the most inhumane of circumstances, never loses his human dignity."Uncle Tom's Cabin" is the most powerful and most enduring work of art ever written about American slavery," said Alfred Kazin.

I decided I finally needed to read it and judge it for myself. And I have to say, that for all its shortcomings (and it does have them), it is really a remarkable book. The standout characteristics of this book are the narrative drive (it's a very exciting, hard to put down book), the vivid characters (I don't know what other reviewers were reading, but I found the characters extremely vivid and mostly believable - exceptions to follow), the sprawling cast, the several completely different worlds that were masterfully portrayed, and the strong female characters in the book. The portrayal of slavery and its effects on families and on individuals is gut-wrenching - when Uncle Tom has to leave his family, and when Eliza may lose little Harry, one feels utterly desolate. As for flaws, yes, Mrs. Stowe does sermonize a fair bit, and her sentences and pronouncements can be smug. Yes, if you're not a Christian, you may find all her Christian references a bit much. (But the majority of her readers claimed to be Christian, and it was her appeal to the spirit of Christ that was her most powerful tug at the emotions of her readers). Yes, she still had some stereotypical views of African-Americans (frankly, I think most people have stereotypical views of races other than their own, they just don't state them as clearly today). But in her time, she went far beyond the efforts of most of her contemporaries to both see and portray her African-American brothers and sisters are equal to her. The best way she did this was in her multi-dimensional portrayal of her Negro characters -- they are, in fact, more believable and more diverse than her white characters. Yes, at times her portrayal of Little Eva and Uncle Tom is overdone at times -- they are a little cardboard in places -- but both, Uncle Tom especially, are overall believable, and very inspiring. The rest of the Negro characters - George Harris, Eliza, Topsy, Cassie, Emmeline, Chloe, Jane and Sara, Mammy, Alphonse, Prue, and others, span the whole spectrum of humanity -- they are vivid and real. The comments of a previous reviewer that the book actually justifies slavery (because "it says it's no worse than capitalism") and that it shows that Christianity defends slavery are due to sloppy reading of the book. No one reading the book could possibly come to the conclusion that it does anything but condemn slavery in the strongest and most indubitable terms. This was the point of the book. The aside about capitalism was just that, an aside on the evils of capitalism. It did not and does not negate the attack on slavery. Secondly, another major point of the book is that TRUE Christianity does not and could not ever support slavery. Stowe points out the Biblical references used to claim that Christianity defended slavery merely to show how the Bible can be misused by those who wish to defend their own indefensible viewpoint. It's ridiculous to say that the book "shows that Christianity supported slavery". It shows that some misguided preachers abused certain Bible passages and ignored other ones to support their view of slavery. There is an overlay of the tired "Victorian women's novel" to this piece - that must be granted. For literary perfection, it will never take its place beside Tolstoy, Dickens and Austen. But it is a piece entirely of its own category. Nothing before or after it has been anything like it, and it IS a great, if flawed, novel. I highly recommend it. I give it 5 stars despite its flaws because it's utterly unique, and its greatness is in some ways is related to its flaws.

168 of 177 people found the following review helpful. Yet another surprised reader By A Customer I too was surprised by "Uncle Tom's Cabin." I'd expected a poorly written melodrama with (at best) a tepid commitment to abolition and a strong undercurrent of racism. I was wrong. As a novel, I consider it to be better than many of its rough contemporaries (including "A Tale of Two Cities," "Vanity Fair," and "Sartor Resartus"). As an attack on slavery, it is uncompromising, well informed, logically sophisticated, and morally unassailable. It's also exciting, educational, and often funny. The book has flaws, of course. The quality of the writing is variable, as it is in the works of many greater talents than Stowe. Herman Melville is one of my favorite writers, but I'd be hard-pressed to defend some of his sentences--or even some of his books--on purely literary grounds! There are indeed sentimental passages in "UTC." So what? There are plenty in Hawthorne, Dickens, Ruskin, and the Brontes, too...and lord knows our age has its own garish pieties. There are also a couple (only a couple!) of unfortunate remarks on the "childlike" character of slaves, but nothing so offensive as to render suspect Stowe's passionate belief that blacks are equal to whites in the eyes of God and must not be enslaved. (She also says that differences between blacks and whites do not result from a difference in innate ability, and argues that a white person raised to be a slave would show all the characteristics of one). By contrast, Plato wrote reams in defense of slavery and racialism, and yet people who point this out are considered spoilsports, if not philistines. The reviewer who claimed to have learned from Stowe that "slavery is no worse than capitalism" has totally misunderstood Stowe, who says that slavery is AS terrible as capitalism. To be precise, Stowe equates the horrors of wage slavery under Victorian Britain's capitalist system of production with those of chattel slavery in the American South. Her definition of capitalism agrees perfectly with that of Karl Marx, who was a pro-abolitionist correspondent for the New York Daily Tribune (and was familiar enough with Stowe to have written a piece on her). Marx said that true capitalism is defined by "the annihilation of self-earned private property; in other words, the expropriation of the labourer." Marx did not consider America a capitalist state, because American workers had at least theoretical upward mobility and could acquire property. This was not at all true of the British working class when "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was written, as Stowe well knew. And there was nothing idiosyncratic about her opinion; contemporaneous books such as "The White Slaves of England" made the same connection between American chattel slavery and British wage slavery. The cruelty of both systems is what led Stowe to claim in an essay that the Civil War was not merely a war against slavery, but "a war for the rights of the working class of society as against the usurpation of privileged aristocracies."As for the claim that Stowe says Christianity justifies slavery, this is either willful misreading or wishful thinking...she says the opposite so many times, and at such length, that to remove every expression of it would probably shorten the book by half (to the delight, apparently, of most of our nation's English students). Not sure who to believe? If you're interested enough in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" to have slogged through this meandering review, why not read it and see for yourself what Stowe does, and doesn't, say?

It is much better than I expected it would be! Easy to read, well-written, and eye-opening. I noticed another reviewer said the download version was hard to read, but I did not find that to be a problem at all. One nice thing about the Kindle is the ability to download so many classics for free. I doubt I would go to the library and check out Uncle Tom's Cabin, but I would and did read it as a free Kindle download. I am glad that I did!

It is a wonderful guide to keep for reference. All the topics touched in this book are necessary for a day to day living in the US. Detailed explanation on ‘Credit History’, ‘401 K’ and ‘Emergency Numbers’ proved to be useful as I was not aware of in spite of living here for a while. Topic on ‘Toilets’ was funny but when thought of it, it seems it is needed for people who are new to the country. I especially loved the topic on ‘Women’ which is written with a genuine voice. It is a topic that every woman, whether living in the US or out anywhere should read. No doubt one can find this info on the internet, however having all the topics compiled into one book is what I liked. Good work!

While the story had a very bumps and the eBook formatting defiantly needed some work, it's a good, fast read and I'm looking forward to more from Cathy Wilson

The story starts out with two friends in a small Michigan town and brings you into their lives and adventures. This book actually leaves it open for a sequel and I'm hoping the author will consider it. I would love to see more from this author.
