Rediscover the Absolute Inner Knowing Hidden Within You More than a book, Beautiful Reminders is an experience. It allows readers to stop the external noise and remind themselves of their true knowing, the essence of their beauty and the soulful chime from deep within. It is a reflection upon their true spirit. What sets Beautiful Reminders apart from other collections of affirmations and photos is it is not a self-help book but rather a physical, real gathering of thoughts, feelings and inspirations that help the reader retain the connection to the true essence of life. In the spirit of Hafez, a 14th century Persian poet and singer of the soul, this book captures whispers of life and releases them into the reader's consciousness. These quotes and photos will open your mind while others will open your heart. They continue to act as living, breathing tools of enlightenment, remembrances of what is truly important. "This beautiful book is a must for anyone who knows the power and wisdom that can come from a seemingly simple quote. What a great resource for anyone who wants to lead themselves and others toward a greater sense of purpose." ~ Bob Proctor, Best-selling Author of You Were Born Rich and star of The Secret "Keep this fabulous book close by so for immediate inspiration and clarity. It is very inspirational, spiritual and brings peace to one's soul. The quotes give you a way to change your perspective and help you choose a better way to start the day. I know I will be keeping this book to reference time after time and recommend it to readers of all ages." ~ Judy O'Beirn, Creator and Co-author of International Bestselling book Unwavering Strength "Beautifully written and serving as a means to maintain alignment with the powerful vibration of life, Beautiful Reminders is created out of pure love from the heart of Banafsheh Akhlaghi and delivers medicine to the soul. Beautiful love and abundant life..." ~Rodney C Flowers, Bestselling Author of Get Up! I Can't. I Will. I Did...Here's How! Sometimes, the prose is inspired by the photos, while at other times the prose inspires the photos. There is a dance of sorts between the two. I hope you enjoy these captured moments and allow them to transport you to another time and place, while remaining grounded in the here and now. I am not a professional photographer. I only used the pure and natural light of the moment and the object of the image before me. Each photo in this book was captured on my handheld phone. By Robin Blackburn McBride Banafsheh Akhlaghi’s book is a love song. Its reminders point to the Beloved in each of us – to the mystical moment and transformative power available here and now. Each page offers restoration. Each reveals our potential to choose harmony, not only as a way of greater ease and understanding, but as a necessity for those who count on us: children of all nations, present and future, with whom we are already one. Akhlaghi’s life-affirming messages invite awareness; we can create anew in tenderness, courage, and beauty. We must.

UPLIFTING AND INSPIRING By Regina Waldman Beautiful Reminders is an uplifting inspiring book of prose, poetry, affirmation , spirituality and love all in one.I started opening the book at random pages and each one of the "reminders" spoke to me so deeply and lovingly. I only just got the book and I am reading a couple of passages every day. I have a very demanding job working on human rights issues and find the book an inspiration which relaxes my mind and inspires me in this challenging world we live in. I have started quoting some of Ms Akhlaghi's "reminders" to my friends.Last but not least, I have started reading some of the poems to my husband. And he loves it! The book is is appropriate reading for young adults and adults alike.I am enjoying it immensely and I only wish you had a 6 star rating, so that I can give it to this book!

By Ashley Bienvenu Every time I travel, I look for guides that will give me something more unique and genuine than your typical tourist books. And for every city I've been to, it's a challenge! Hip in Paris nails this! It gives amazing addresses for things to do, places to eat, and shopping spots without focusing on the same suggestions as every other guide book. The presentation makes is really easy to navigate without spending tons of time reading through unnecessary texts. And better than anything, the suggestions are amazing. I can't wait for the next one to come out!

The New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling author of Secret Daughter returns with an unforgettable story of family, responsibility, love, honor, tradition, and identity, in which two childhood friends—a young doctor and a newly married bride—must balance the expectations of their culture and their families with the desires of their own hearts.

The first of his family to go to college, Anil Patel, the golden son, carries the weight of tradition and his family’s expectations when he leaves his tiny Indian village to begin a medical residency in Dallas, Texas, at one of the busiest and most competitive hospitals in America. When his father dies, Anil becomes the de facto head of the Patel household and inherits the mantle of arbiter for all of the village’s disputes. But he is uneasy with the custom, uncertain that he has the wisdom and courage demonstrated by his father and grandfather. His doubts are compounded by the difficulties he discovers in adjusting to a new culture and a new job, challenges that will shake his confidence in himself and his abilities.

Back home in India, Anil’s closest childhood friend, Leena, struggles to adapt to her demanding new husband and relatives. Arranged by her parents, the marriage shatters Leena’s romantic hopes, and eventually forces her to make a desperate choice that will hold drastic repercussions for herself and her family. Though Anil and Leena struggle to come to terms with their identities thousands of miles apart, their lives eventually intersect once more—changing them both and the people they love forever.

Tender and bittersweet, The Golden Son illuminates the ambivalence of people caught between past and present, tradition and modernity, duty and choice; the push and pull of living in two cultures, and the painful decisions we must make to find our true selves.

By Laurie@The Baking Bookworm My Review: I have been so eager to read another book by Canadian author Shilpi Somaya Gowda since I simply adored her first book, Secret Daughter back in August 2010. Once again Ms Gowda doesn't disappoint her readers. The Golden Son is a culture-filled coming of age story that also showcases the complexities of family bonds and friendships. Anil is a young man who lives precariously between two worlds - Gujarat, a small, rural town in India where he was born and raised as part of the town's most respected families and Texas where he is training to be a doctor.Anil is initially a fish out of water as he struggles to acclimate to life in Texas, Western culture/technology and sadly racism and ignorance. He struggles with the individualism he has in the States versus the communal, family obligations that he has back in India, specifically the demands put on him by his family as the eldest son and the Arbiter for Gujarat, an old tradition of a respected person settling grievances of family and friends in a community. The story also follows Leena, Anil's childhood friend who was raised on a neighbouring farm as the daughter of a tenant farmer. She follows a more traditional path for her life back in India with some heartbreaking results. While these two lead very different lives they are both struggling to find their own ways. The only criticism I have regarding this book is that, at times, Anil's medical school issues were more at the forefront than I would have liked. I was much more invested in his personal/cultural issues than what studies he was working on for his education. As with Secret Daughter, Gowda teaches her readers about the complexities and beauty of Indian culture. Her characters are interesting and as I read the book I figured I knew how it would all play out but Gowda threw in some unexpected twists. The book ended with a different outcome than I was expecting yet it was still a very satisfying conclusion. My Rating: 4/5 stars**This book review can also be found on my blog, The Baking Bookworm (www.thebakingbookworm.blogspot.ca) where I share hundreds of book reviews and my favourite recipes. **

Small differences and misunderstandings are made larger -- Gowda captures the immigrant experience By Gaby at Starting Fresh blog In The Golden Son, we follow the stories of Anil and Leena from their youth in Gujarat, a small rural town in India. Anil and Leena had been childhood friends although their difference in status in their home town meant that Anil's family disapproved of the friendship.Anil/Neil's family is a prominent one in the area and as the eldest son, he's expected to take on the responsibility of managing the estate, mediating disputes, etc. But Anil's own ambition is to excel as a doctor and he succeeds in winning a spot in a respected medical residency program in Texas. Though Anil has beat the odds in getting into the program, he finds himself struggling with the day-to-day work and interacting with his supervising doctors and his peers. Small differences and misunderstandings are amplified in part because of the cultural disconnect and Anil finds that his dream is moving farther away from him.As a poor young woman in rural India, Leena had less options than Anil. As Leena is married off to a wealthy family in a distant area, she must trust in her husband to protect her rights. Leena faces unfortunate luck in her spouse and in laws and must take matters into her own hands.Shilpi Somaya Gowda draws us into the lives of these characters and gives voice to the complicated, difficult and universal problems that immigrants find as they try to make their way into new places. Gowda writes beautifully and with much sympathy.

Case “Golden Son” is Shilpi Somaya Gowda’s second novel; it follows her extremely successful 2011 debut novel, “Silent Daughter.” There are many fans eagerly awaiting its arrival; I’m confident they will be pleased. Gowda delivers a fascinating saga with realistic main characters, intelligent themes, and psychological complexity—in the end, I found this new fictional journey to be deeply affecting and emotionally satisfying. It should equal the success of her first novel in every way,“Golden Son” follows the story of two main characters as they develop and change over three decades. One is Anil, the eldest son of a prosperous rural Indian farmer; the other is Leena, the only child of a lower caste farmer from the same village. The two begin life as very close childhood friends; however, as they develop into adulthood their lives take starkly different paths. Anil becomes a medical doctor and travels to America to complete his residency in Dallas, Texas. There he must adapt to a whole new culture and learn to interact appropriately with modern American values and sexually experienced American women.Leena has a traditional marriage arranged for her by her parents. They only want the best for their daughter and are overjoyed when they find what they think is a prosperous farmer living in a village quite some distance from them. Leena’s parents are prepared to pay a substantial dowry if he agrees to marry her. They must keep the dowry a secret because the ancient tradition of a bride price has been criminalized in modern India. They borrow heavily to give their daughter a better life. Unfortunately, almost everything about the marriage is a sham. Leena ends up suffering considerable physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her husband and her new in-laws. There are so many things about her new family she does not understand. At first, she assumes that her troubles are her own fault. However, little-by-little, she pieces together the horrible history of her husband’s family before she came into their lives and why they needed to bring her into their family to resolve their problems. The two main characters come together as adults when Anil makes a few trips back to India to take care of family matters. It is during his stays in India that Anil becomes interested once again in Leena and aware that her marital situation may be abusive. Should he rescue Leena? Has he fallen in love with her? Can a culturally adapted Indian-American doctor find happiness with a traditional rural Indian wife? Will Anil’s mother be disappointed if he marries someone of whom she does not approve and someone that she didn’t pick for him? Will Anil return to India to practice medicine or continue to live in the United States? These are only some of the many questions I asked myself as I rushed to finish the novel and find out what would become of Anil and Leena.By the end of the book, I cared a great deal about both characters. I wanted the best for them. What happens is wonderful, but it is not at all what I expected. It’s one of those cases where the author takes her characters to a conclusion that most readers would never guess, but that all will be pleased with. This is a book about tradition, honor, duty, and love. It is a book about the Indian-American immigrant experience. It is a book about the changing culture of rural India. It is a book about being true to one’s values and identity. But at its heart, it is a book about the importance of family…and, indeed, what it takes to make a family in today’s complicated world.Gowda writes well-crafted, simple prose with abundant emotional depth. I rated her debut four stars, and I am doing the same to this second novel. Let me explain. My ratings for this author have been hybrids. That’s because Gowda’s books are hybrids. She writes prose that is somewhere squarely between popular fiction and literary fiction. She aspires to both. If I assessed her work only as popular fiction, then she’d get five stars; however, if I assessed her work as literary fiction, she’d get three stars. As a result, four stars seems a proper compromise. Her fans appear to want high-quality popular fiction and, with “Golden Son,” that is exactly what Gowda delivers.

A lovely book of poems rich with intelligent humor, societal observations By LMKaminski A lovely book of poems rich with intelligent humor, societal observations, and amazing lyricism. These poems are an unapologetic celebration of Nigerian (and wider African) heritage, including "Fulani Boy" (which has garnered international recognition), and the exquisitely-written "Kwesi." My feet wanted to dance to the intense rhythms of "Call of the Konga," "Nkpokiti dancer," and "These ghosts shall dance again" -- these three poems, which appear together in FLAMES OF THE FOREST, capture the rhythm of drum, flute, and tambourine in a most magical way, conveying foot-stamping rhythm and sensuous movement in a way that I didn't think possible via mere words on a page. And the social commentary in "Meet me at Chibok," "To a suicide bomber in Mubi," "Haven't we seen enough?" and "When will the ravens perch again?" is not merely a lament, but holds a deep sense of determination to move toward something better. My personal favorites in this fine collection are "Fulani Woman" and "Hills of the Impala" -- these poems, in my mind, deserve every bit the same international attention received by "Fulani Boy" -- they are both astoundingly well done, poems I have read again and again and again that make my heart smile and break at the same time. I am looking forward to another collection from this promising young poet.

Flames of the Forest is a classic. We whole heartedly endorse the review of this book by Professor Asomwan Adagbonyi and wish to reproduce it hereunder as ours also........................................................................................................A Few Words…I will be quick to trouble you with this little confession: I’m yet to meet ‘Zogie Iyeomoan in person, though by way of self-introduction, he describes himself in this elegant collection of poems as “an unrepentant lover of African literature and history”. He also makes quite a few poetic “confessions” and “claims”, but more on these shortly.I have no reason to doubt his claim to being “an unrepentant lover of African literature”, having before now encountered his poetry on social media and seen the passion with which he goes on creating, on a near daily basis, poem after poem that can conceivably be described as of high quality. If I have been struck by the kinetic energy that suffuses his ‘social media’ poems, the dexterity with which he unreels the tapestry of his poetic imagination, I have also not failed to wish that these poems and his many others lying in quietude in memory cards and flash drives are “transmogrified” into some “permanence” in the nature of a book. Now in this homogenous form, it could either be transmitted into other forms - electronic/digital, etc. – or left as it is.If I have been taken in by the sensitivity with which he articulates his perspectives and the depth of his love for words, I have also been impressed by his relishing of a broad-based collocational geography in amplifying and contextualizing his messages. All these, put together, have given his poetry an unforgetability – a certain kind of haunting presence – which at last this volume not only validates but consolidates – to my great joy, and relief!Flames of the Forest, then, is an effort that reveals the flaming innards of a young Nigerian writer’s passion for the beaded word and a more than passionate affirmation of his love for literature, especially the poetry genre. It showcases his joy, pain, surprise, disappointment, frustration with his country, his continent, its past, present and future. It is a roller-coaster of emotions and that this intense presence is urged on by the solidity of the panoramic sweep of the 76 poems is remarkable indeed. In one of the poems, Yeomoan declares: “I’m not a renowned poet/just an apprentice”. Going further, he states: “If I be a poet/let my words give life”. Much as these “confessional”, profoundly self-effacing lines may suggest that in his youth and innocence the poet may not even be sure of who he is, a close reading of this collection reveals that it is certainly not a journey of innocence. It is, in fact, the foraging of a vibrant, multi-talented writer in the panoply of experience seeking to forge a defiant, personal poetic mode; the relentless, undefeated and undefeating effort to create forest fires.Flames of the Forest, in my estimation, is a powerful collection that demands the attention of all who seek not only beauty in poetry, but also the poetry of beauty. But beyond this, is the undiluted truth it unleashes, damning the consequences.Asomwan Adagbonyin, Ph.D.Professor of English (Stylistics)Ambrose Alli University,Ekpoma, Nigeria.

Best American Anthology of Poetry By Lorrie Carter Surpassing the first edition, just as the present self reaches a bit farther to surpass its former self, Mike Simms ensures that excellent poetry rules this anthology from poet laureates to poets writing from the edge of American life; equal weight is given to each poet independently. Saying something is the "best" opens the door to criticism, unless of course, you ain't braggin' you are just saying a fact, and in this case, the beauty of the anthology rests in how effectively Mile encapsulates the individual parts into the clear and comprehensive whole. The synergy is there for us to take in, or not, depending on your persuasion, your mood, or whatever it is that drives you to seek more than predictable fare.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Breathless By E. Dowling I am a lawyer. I spend way too much time reading about time management, marketing in the age of social media, the effect of falling oil prices on the consumer economy and why Justice Scalia thinks torture doesn't violate the U.S. Constitution. Periodically, I like to remind myself that I was once a Lit major.Reading this book, not only did I lose track of the otherwise billable hours spent; but more importantly, I lost track of the words that took my breath away. The complete lack of a table of contents or any other form of content organization cost the fifth star in this review

Everyone has a closet to come out of. For some it may be sexuality or gender identity. For author David Haneline, it was religion. Raised as a Christian fundamentalist, home-schooled abortion protester, David always struggled with his religion, and its application. The road towards self-realization was long and fraught with difficulty, struggle, pain, and loss. This book tells that story, and reveals for the first time the poetry that was written during those years of struggle and self-discovery, poetry that was hidden for fear of being misunderstood. So often we hide the things about us that we think are not beautiful or acceptable. This book reveals it all and encourages the reader to take the same steps towards authenticity. Sometimes the greatest battle is the struggle to be ourselves without shame.
