All day within the palace of the King In Lacedaemon, was there revelry, Since Menelaus with the dawn did spring Forth from his carven couch, and, climbing high The tower of outlook, gazed along the dry White road that runs to Pylos through the plain, And mark'd thin clouds of dust against the sky, And gleaming bronze, and robes of purple stain.

Helen of Troy, by Andrew Lang

About the Author Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. A regional wine guide to enotourism in Catalonia’s DOQ Priorat region including 112 winery profiles and over 350 wine tasting notes Well-known today, DOQ Priorat’s storied history is due to the Carthusian monks setting up shop back in the 12th century when they founded the Scala Dei monastery. As the number of wineries have increased in the area, they’ve also started opening their doors to visitors and creating a spectacular enotourism offer for those making their holiday in Catalonia. Their rich, full bodied, elegant wines are matched only by the spectacular terraces that they’ve cut in to the steep mountains for their Grenache and Carignan grapes. This second edition has extensive profiles for 112 wine producers with GPS coordinates, maps, suggested itineraries, and tasting notes for over 350 wines making it the most essential book for planning your own wine tour.

If you ever need to take a break from Barcelona and explore this unique wine country Priorat DOQ (or officially Priorat Denominació d'Origen Qualificada - think specially designated region like Champagne of France), you will need this guide, a rental car and a GPS. There are over 100 wineries (the author prefers to call them cellars) so your trip will keep you busy. Napa, California has ~140 so your choice in Priorat is enormous. The author has done a ton of research, including on-site visits and tastings, so focus on the wineries that are open to the public, speak English, have been marked by 2 or 3 stars by the author etc. according to your needs. Great guide for wine lovers and visitors to Catalonia looking for a unique tourist experience.

I have the other wine books which were wonderful and once again I am delighted By christy I have the other wine books which were wonderful and once again I am delighted. The information is so in depth and interesting about both the wine and the region you feel a connection. I can't wait to till spring to see it all for myself. This really helps in planning and enjoying my visit. Keep writing! I look forward to any all new publications.

By Michael Brent Faulkner, Jr. Poet extraordinaire Theodore Ficklestein has done it again – delivered a collection of poetry that demands its respective reader to “chuckle” and be thoroughly entertained. This Book Needs A Title: Volume 2 thrives because of its simplicity (see “Another One Word Poem”), sarcasm (“National Poetry Month” finds the author being antipoetic you might say), and its unique, absurd delivery (“No Miracles” is certainly not miraculous or merciful). This Book Needs A Title: Volume 2 is perfect reading material for any number of occasions.Where does one start with standouts ?– There are so many! “10:32” is the tale of the disgruntled employee who is counting down the 28 minutes until clock out time. Ultimately, “I clock out and don’t have to worry about this place. Until tomorrow.” Classic. “Coaching Basketball” is an über-simplistic guide to the sport, featuring lots of repetition, notably six iterations of the word “bounce.” It keeps on going though. “Throw Up” is ‘basic’ (“I don’t feel so good. I feel. Uh. Queasy…”) while “A Biblical Message” is more ambitious, literally using the chapter/verse format. Of course, Ficklestein doesn’t just leave it at the format – his “Biblical Message” is a funny one.Ficklestein even manages to poke fun at himself. “Give This Poem A Title” references his inability to name a book, let alone a poem within his book. “Reviewer’s Poem” similarly pokes fun with Ficklestein approaching it from the perspective of a ‘reviewer.’ Of course it is Ficklestein who’s authoring the poem so he just adds more fuel to the absurd fire that is This Book Needs a Title: Volume 2.Whether it’s “Apology To Teachers,” “Being God,” or the rhyming in “Overzealous Loon” or “Religious Friends” (all the friends’ name rhyme with their respective religions), Theodore Ficklestein ensures that his second book is a trip. Is This Book Needs A Title: Volume 2 worth the read? While Ficklestein would have a clever answer suggesting why NOT read his book, honestly you should totally read it. If for nothing else, Ficklestein’s utter absurdity will put a smile on your face, even if you roll your eyes a time or two!I was given this book for free in exchange for a fair an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Theatre of the Absurd By Grady Harp Theodore Ficklestein is playing his poetry that addresses everything and nothing for all its worth. This is the second volume of his work under the same title (except for Volume 1 vs. Volume 2) and it seems he is having more fun and guffaws at this experiment. He adds little notes to his book, such as `If you are looking for a summary here about what this book is about, then you have the wrong book' that make us feel as though we are being mocked, but the thing that is being `mocked' (or better yet closely observed) is the absurd state in which we find ourselves. Afraid to laugh at our own foibles or take ridiculous things seriously (like, say, Donald Trump et al).But since no one else has reviewed this book (either volume) please allow an introduction to its contents and absorb the degree of humor at hand.BUDDHAI got to give credit to Buddha for what he did. It's impressive.Considering the guy is famous for sitting.Think about it.The guy sat around all day.And people remember him as on of the greatest people to ever live.I sit around all day.And I get nothing.Being famous for sitting.Impressive, Buddha.Very Impressive.SCAMAll that you know I a scam.It is.The stuff that you see and know is just a business. There is money behind everything.A scamThat is what it all is.A way for someone to take your money. But if everything is a scam, then how do you know if this is a scam or not?Bum. Bum. Bum.WRONGIt's wrong. But I want it.It's wrong. But I need it.It's wrong. But I can't live without it.If it is so wrong,Then why is it such a large part of my life? And there are so many of these little one page observations cum comments cum frustrations that it is impossible to read this book and not look in the mirror with a different glance. Theodore Ficklestein is likely to one day be remembered as one of our more sensitive wits. Maybe tomorrow. Read him. Grady Harp, July 15

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring, Funny and Profound By James Gallen I had read and reviewed the first volume of “This Book Needs A Title” so, when I was offered a free copy to review this one I took author Ted Ficklestein up on it.The poems in this book are short and witty. Some are inspiring, like “A Climb To A Mountain”, others are funny, like “Reading Up” (it is best read from the bottom) and others are profound, like “Changing The World”. Pick it up, page through it and pick the ones that appeal to you.

I found what I thought would be a useful travel guide (as indicated in the title) By D.Fonseca Looking for information about Poland for an upcoming trip, I found what I thought would be a useful travel guide (as indicated in the title), but I was disappointed with the limited amount of information provided by this "book." It is really a series of two-page synopses about a few cities and a handful of other "places," such as Auschwitz and the Slowinski National Park. In my opinion, it is absurd to devote the same amount of space to Krakow as is devoted to the national park. I confess that I should have been more observant and realized that this booklet, with its mere 42 pages and no real recommendations, is definitely not worth the money.

These poems have been written over the course of several years, and therefore reflect a myriad of sensibilities. Some of the poems reflect emotions as they pertain to feeling alienated, misunderstood, or different, gothic subculture, desire, morbid curiosity, and a love of all things dark, embracing our darkest fears, and confronting our inner demons.

A Beautiful Work of Art By Elizabeth Hendry It's very obvious from reading all of these reader reviews that The House of the Seven Gables is not for everyone. But, I urge you to determine if it is for you. If it is, you certainly don't want to miss it. This novel was not written with today's readers in mind. You cannot call it quick-paced, by any stretch of the imagination. The novel is however, a wonderful work of art. Every sentence, every word is carefully crafted, carefully chosen. This novel is meant to be read slowly, to be savored. The novel tells a fairly simple story--the story of the house, and its perhaps doomed family of inhabitants. Many years after a curse by a supposed warlock--there are only 4 members of the doomed family surviving. Is the house haunted? Maybe. Hawthorne is so clever--every time he tells us about a supposed ghost or haunting, he gives us a more "reasonable" explanation. Were they ghosts swirling around the house one evening, or was it just the wind. Is the family doomed? Maybe, but then there is young Pheobe who seems anything but. The House of Seven Gables is far superior to any contemporary gothic you can read. It is novel writing at its best. The characters have depth, the story is engaging, and even, at times, funny. But, you have to be ready for a novel written well over a hundred years ago. If you are, you are in for a treat.

Hawthorne's Supernatural Thriller, 19th Century Style By Jeffrey Leach Nathaniel Hawthorne is probably one of the most despised figures in the American literary canon, at least in the minds of the millions of school children forced to read "The Scarlet Letter." I will go so far as to admit I never finished that novel. I took one look through the book and laughed at the ridiculous idea of reading such a convoluted looking story. That was at age seventeen. Now, many years later I am able to go back and actually read some of these daunting novels. What is surprising is that they are not daunting at all, just written in an ornate style from a different age. The plots often deal with the same issues and concerns modern people fret about. For those uninterested in relationships and human dramas, there are also great old stories with supernatural elements, which is where this book comes in. This edition of the book includes an introduction by Mary Oliver and several commentaries on the work by Edwin Percy Whipple, Henry T. Tuckerman, F.O. Matthiessen, and Herman Melville. The Melville commentary is actually a letter the author of "Moby Dick" sent to Hawthorne where he concludes with a demand that Hawthorne "walk down one of these mornings and see me." Pretty neat.In "The House of the Seven Gables," the author tells his reader the story is a romance. What he means by this terminology is not a cheap paperback that involves swooning hearts with Fabio on the cover, but "a legend prolonging itself, from an epoch now gray in the distance, down into our own broad daylight." Hawthorne's specific goal is to show that the bad behavior of one generation devolves on future descendents. He accomplishes this by examining the Pyncheon family, a clan founded on America's shores by the stern Puritan Colonel Pyncheon, who used his considerable influence to inveigle prime real estate from one Matthew Maule in the 17th century. Pyncheon carried out this task by using the Salem witchcraft scare to secure Maule's execution. In his last moments, Maule laid a curse on the good Colonel and all of his descendents, telling him that God would give them blood to drink as a punishment for this evil injustice. Shortly after the Colonel builds his house with seven gables on Maule's property, he dies in a way that makes Maule's curse seem to be a reality. Rather than trace this terrible evil down through the ages in minute detail, Hawthorne only touches on a few important points before beginning his story in the middle of the 19th century. The Pyncheon family is slowly moldering into extinction when Hawthorne introduces us to poor old Hepzibah Pyncheon. She lives alone in the ancient estate, reduced to near starvation because her brother Clifford is in prison and Jaffrey Pyncheon, a rich judge who lives in his own manor in the country, refuses to offer her assistance. The only way to survive for Hepzibah is to open a penny store in an old part of the decaying house. Just when things reach a nadir, another Pyncheon turns up to save the day. This is Phoebe, a vivacious young lady who lives in the country. This fetching lass is a blessing for Hepzibah; she runs the penny store, helps to lift the gloomy atmosphere in the house, and when Clifford returns from his long imprisonment, Phoebe entertains the doddering man with her multitude of charms. She even strikes up an acquaintance with Holgrave, a young boarder in the house. Things start to look up when yet another tragedy strikes the Pyncheon family, leading to the momentary evacuation of the ancestral estate by Hepzibah and Clifford before Hawthorne settles all accounts in an ending that is both quick and highly implausible. The reputation this book has with many people is not good. They disparage the lengthy digressions, the massive amount of time Hawthorne takes to explore Hepzibah's dilemma over opening the penny store, the sentences that go on and on without seeming to make any point whatsoever, and the organization of the book as a whole. There is some foundation in these charges. The chapters describing the penny store do seem interminable, especially when viewed in the context of the story as a whole. As for the descriptions of Hepzibah's scowling countenance and Clifford's puny mental state, we get the idea well before Hawthorne quits harping on them. Yes, there are flaws in "The House of the Seven Gables."However, I personally enjoyed the deeply rich 19th century prose. Hawthorne's command of the English language is impressive and, at times, as precise as a cruise missile. One need only read the chapter about Judge Jaffrey Pyncheon's unfortunate incident in the house to grasp the beauty of this author's style. As for the digressions, if people have a problem with chapters such as "Alice Pyncheon" and the introductory material setting down the history of the doomed family, it is really their loss. It is when Hawthorne writes about supernatural elements that he really managed to grab me. If this counts as a lengthy digression from the story, I will take more, please! If I had to assign a Hawthorne novel to a group of slack jawed high school students, I would give them this one in place of "The Scarlet Letter." At least with "The House of the Seven Gables," someone might enjoy the eerie curse that united the Maules with the Pyncheons for two centuries. A letter sewn on clothing cannot stack up against ghosts, a disembodied hand, and mysterious deaths. The kids will still grumble, but not as much when they realize there are less "thees" and "thous" tossed around in this novel.

By John Salerno I must say that the negative reviews that I have read about Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables are sorely off the mark. The prevalent sentiments are that the plot is dull (or almost absent), the characters are flat, and the description is overwrought. But you who say this are simply missing the point, as well as taking Hawthorne's work out of context. You have to understand that this novel was written during a very transitional period in literature. Writers had shifted from the Enlightenment to Romanticism (the period in which Hawthorne writes), and as Hawthorne writes his novels, another movement is being made to Realism. Realism is what we are used to in modern fiction. It contains real characters and real events. But Hawthorne had not yet fully employed these new ideas, and he still hung on to the Romantic sentiments. Therefore, he was much more interested in ideas rather than character development (a modern technique). Hawthorne chooses to convey ideas, emotions, morals, etc. rather than fully developed the characters like they would be in a novel today. As for no plot, you have to keep in mind that Hawthorne still looks to the old tradition (not to mention his guilt of his heritage), so he uses his writing as a way to teach moral lessons, not necessarily to describe a highly detailed story and plot. Finally, I can't deny that there is plenty of narrative description, but most of it serves a great purpose, and for the parts that you think do not belong, just read and enjoy them for their poetic beauty and technical merit.Hawthorne is a fantastic writer, but to acknowledge this, the reader must not take his work out of its context.

As tropical as it is topical, this landmark anthology gives voice to three powerful women poets from the Dominican Republic. Together they present a wide array of linguistic and stylistic elements, and they address shared political and cultural issues that illuminate what it means to be a woman in the modern-day Dominican Republic. Translator Judith Kerman, who began the anthology as a Senior Fulbright Scholar, notes that “contemporary women poets from the Dominican Republic are the most underserved group when it comes to English-language translations.” This anthology remedies that omission with poetry that is smart, edgy, and groundbreaking.

By Amazon Customer This is specific to the Kindle edition: no tone marks on the pinyin in the text, which makes it a pain to use! (The printed version of the book DOES have toned marks on the pinyin, so my complaint doesn't apply to the print edition).Okay, so this may not be a big deal to many people, but I speak enough Chinese to ask for directions, but don't read (very many) Chinese characters. So having tone marks on the pinyin for names of restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc. makes it a lot easier to ask someone for directions, and it seems like I have to ask for directions more in China than other places I've travelled. Sure, many times Chinese people can figure out what you are trying to say if you say a name in all neutral tones, but being able to pronounce names properly definitely makes things easier and less confusing for everyone. And yes, I could show the characters to people (assuming they read, not always the case!), but it is easier if I can just read the name once to myself before setting off and remember how to say it accurately instead of having to dig out my phone to show someone each time I ask directions. The work-around I used with the previous edition of this guide (which suffered the same problem) while traveling in China was to copy and paste the characters into the electronic dictionary on my phone to figure out the correct tones. That works, but is irritating since the information could easily just be presented in the text!BTW, the Kindle edition of Lonely Planet's Discover China 2013 DOES contain pinyin with tone marks, so I'm not sure why this Kindle edition doesn't. However, this edition covers a lot more of the country (and generally covers the locations that also appear in Discover China in more detail) so would be a better choice if you are traveling beyond the major highlights (and will be using the print edition or are not as irritated by the lack of tone marks as I am).I was hoping this edition would fix the tone mark problem, but it apparently has not, so I'll be avoiding purchasing this and looking for another electronic guide book option, since I travel light and don't want to lug around the print edition.Lonely Planet: please fix this problem with the Kindle edition of the book!

It has some fair information but most of the prices are very outdated (after only a few months) along with a host of other problems. I have been traveling in China for 1 month and have found that the book doesn't give information about some very touristed areas and spends far too much time on cities that should be skipped altogether. The book also downplays the hordes of Chinese tourists everywhere and paints every sight as a peaceful, picturesque experience. This hasn't been the case at all. The writers need to be more honest about sights and give more information about even the biggest tourist attractions, namely Yangshuo. Buy someone else's guide or contact me and I will send you mine for free. Please take it off my hands as it is heavy and not worth anything.
