In the early years of the twentieth century, a young boy and his foster sister died. Their souls did not pass into Heaven, however, and the two young spirits waited patiently for their mother to come to them. Even though Rosemary Sullivan-McGinty couldn't see her dead son and foster daughter, her mother's intuition convinced her that they were still close at hand. She pined day in and day out, for her lost little ones, and she refused to leave the farmhouse.Rosemary died in 1940 and the old farmhouse in which their family lived - and died - would soon be abandoned. It has been empty since then. Now, one hundred years after the children died, their story is being told. Rosemary found a way, and through her beyond-the-grave collaboration with Sophie, the children were rescued from their farmhouse. This is the story of a mother's undying love for her children - and how that power reached far beyond the grave to help them find their way back to her on the other side.Author Jo Macleod has shaped this fictional tale around her own life experiences. This is their story, based on the true events of their spirit rescue.

The Author managed to capture the spirit Ireland and the lifestyle of the Irish at that time in history. I was completely drawn in and I felt like I was observing and reliving the past. The author went into great detail about the lack of material goods and the hardships that people of that era endured physically, mentally and spiritually. It’s no wonder that some spirits get confused and “stuck” on earth. I loved the ending and I felt a peace within me when the unsettled spirits of Fin and & Rosie and the many others found their way to “the light” It’s a powerful thing when so many spirits on both sides team together in meditation or prayer to bring about changes. We need to remember that in today’s turbulent times.

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. A Unique Work of Anglican Devotional Romantic Poetry By Fr. Charles Erlandson Having spent 3 years researching John Keble's "The Christian Year" for my Ph.D. dissertation, I feel qualified to make some comments on this extraordinary work of literature.Essentially, "The Christian Year" is early 19th century devotional poetry written in a Romantic vein. Keble, who was born in 1792 and is credited for having started the Oxford Movement with his Assize Sermon in 1833, was an Anglican priest, poet, and professor. "The Christian Year" is his book of poetry in which he wrote a poem for each week of the Christian year, as well as a poem for each of the services from The Book of Common Prayer. It's a work that is not much read today but that was wildly successful in the 19th century. While the aesthetic level of the poetry is second-rate compared to Keble's contemporary Romantic poets (at least the more famous ones), when read as devotional poetry that connects one to God through the Church, the Bible, the Prayer Book, and nature, the poetry still has the power to move. While the poetry of "The Christian Year" will seem outdated to most, if not actually inferior, a proper reading of it in its context will benefit not only students of history and literature but also the patient Christian reader in search of a profound devotional literary work. The full title of the work is: The Christian Year: Thoughts in Verse for the Sundays and Holydays throughout the Year. The volume begins with a "Morning" and "Evening" hymn, corresponding to Morning and Evening Prayer services, followed by a poem for every week in the Church year. These are followed by poems for the various saints' days, Holy Communion, Holy Baptism, and the occasional services. In 1828 poems for the State services were added as well.Keble's poetic life originated in his undergraduate days when he relieved his emotions by composing poetry, often on any scrap of paper he could find. When Keble began around 1819 to compose the poems that would eventually be included in The Christian Year, he had no intention of crafting his poetry into a unified companion to the Prayer Book. He apparently began while a tutor at Oriel College, inspired by his tours back and forth between Oxford and his home in Fairford. Keble's own theory of poetry illuminates the personal and individual aspect of poetry from which his own poetry originally flowed: "Let us therefore deem the glorious art of Poetry a kind of medicine divinely bestowed upon man: which gives healing relief to secret mental emotion, yet without detriment to modest reserve: and, while giving scope to enthusiasm, yet rules it with order and due control." Keble's poetry, in keeping with his theory, was written first and foremost for the comfort of his own soul. Its most immediate impression was on that of his close circle family and friends, who universally found something new and powerful in the poems. The comfort for the individual soul that the poems brought appears frequently in the correspondence and remains of Keble's family and friends prior to its publication.Keble continued writing poetry for his own benefit in the 1820s, and, at some point not apparently recorded in Keble's correspondence or in the memoirs of those who knew him, he decided to arrange the poetry so that a poem would be provided for each holy day in the Church year. By 1825 Keble wrote a friend, "I have got a few attempts at hymns by me, which I have from time to time written, principally for my own relief . . . . My plan was to have one, if I could, for every Sunday & holiday in the year: taking the hint for the subject of each from something or other in the proper Psalms or Lessons for the day. When he did publish the work in 1827, he added to it his own Advertisement, in which he admirably sets out his aims: "The object of the present publication will be attained, if any person find assistance from it in bringing his own thoughts and feelings into more entire unison with those recommended and exemplified in the Prayer Book." Keble makes clear that his goal in publishing his poetry was to have his readers use The Christian Year as a companion to the Prayer Book. A better summary of the purpose and effect of The Christian Year could not be found than what Keble himself wrote in his Advertisement. Keble also expected that his poetry, along with the Prayer Book, would provide a "sober standard of feeling in matters of practical religion." The Liturgy, he said, disciplined the tempers which need disciplining in such an age of excitement. There is, therefore, a dual origin and dual purpose of The Christian Year. The original poetic impulse for the poetry came from Keble's own desire to express himself as an individual soul addressing His God, often out of a need for comfort. This original source for the poetry was then fitted for use as an Anglican devotional manual which had specific reference to the Prayer Book. This dual origin and purpose of the poetry is highly significant for explaining the astounding success of the poetry in the nineteenth century and its continuing value.A work of High Church devotional poetry, at a time when interest in poetry in general was beginning to wane, was not expected by many to succeed. Keble himself thought that nothing would come of it. "I remember, when it was first in the press," Isaac Williams wrote, "coming with Keble out of Baxter's printing-office, when Keble said, `It will be still-born, I know very well; but it is only in obedience to my father's wishes that I publish it, and that is some comfort.'" Keble's perpetual embarrassment by his success provides further evidence that he was never prepared for, and thus never expected, the success he achieved. The Christian Year enjoyed an immediate, lasting, and enormous success. The 1827 first edition of 500 needed little time to sell out and persuade Parker of the need for a second edition. The second edition of 750 also sold out within a few months, and a third edition of 1250 was published around March of 1828. The total number of copies sold in the first year alone, combining the sales of the first three editions, was at least 2500 copies, while the total sold for the first ten years was 26,500. By 1873 when the copyright had expired, 158 editions had been published by Parker, the original publisher, and 379,000 copies had been sold by the same date. My research indicates that approximately 1,000,000 copies of "The Christian Year" were sold in the 19th century, and many used volumes are available, as well as a plethora of modern reprints.Christians from many different denominations read The Christian Year. One writer said that the spiritual life and feeling of Keble's poetry "exist in Christian hearts, whether reared under Episcopalian, Presbyterian, or Nonconformist influences." My research indicates that a great number of major figures in the 19th century had read "The Christian Year," and many people had virtually memorized it. Thomas Carlyle, Florence Nightingale, Christina Rossetti, Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy, William Gladstone, and many other have left testimony to having read "The Christian Year."Those who read The Christian Year most faithfully, however, were likely to be Anglicans due to its connection with the Prayer Book. Many people read Keble's poetry week by week for years: the vast majority of these were Anglicans. This is what one would expect, since the contents of the book were based on an Anglican Church year, a specifically Anglican lectionary, and services which were often specifically Anglican. Finally, many readers of the 19th century wrote that "The Christian Year" did more to promote High Church and Catholic principles than the Tracts for the Times because Keble wrote through the vehicle of poetry and a poetry that appealed to all Christians, even while it subtly expressed Catholic ideals of the Church and a sacramental worldview.

Typical Warner book--but with some twists By Maggie Jarpey Susan Warner's heroes and heroines are usually very similar to one another, as her readers know, but there are always some differences, as is the case here. And she always has some thorough historical or cultural or even scientific information and description included--again, as is the case here. This book does a wonderful job of describing English history and the state of London at the time of the writing of the book, including the state of the United States at that time, plus relations between the two countries. I feel as if I took a tour of London's most notable places in a time machine that took me back to the time of the writing. And I received an excellent summary of English history up to that time as well. Also, there is much description and information on various flowers, which I always enjoy in her books, though it is sad to realize that so many wild flowers have disappeared. Something the reader continually encounters in books of this era is the almost complete lack of government help for the poor, leaving it up to Christians to do anything for them. There are positives and negatives involved in both situations. The class distinctions, carryovers from England, are fascinatingly strong in early American culture. And once more, I'm trying to move more slowly and gracefully, the way Warner's heroines do: a difficult challenge for someone who moves in just the opposite way!

Derek has done his research and offers foodies, and everyone looking for a good bite out, the recommendations they long for . . . the best places eat out and, specifically, the dishes each establishment is famous for. The behind-the-scenes look at the restaurants, where Derek interviews owners and chefs, is a fun bonus that offers tidbits and insight that would be hard to find anywhere else. New to Seoul, I really appreciate the time this author took in putting together a unique guide book experience for readers. We've already been to a couple establishments Derek recommends . . . everything Derek wrote was spot on, from exact directions to each restaurant, to what to eat while there. I highly recommend this book to anyone in Seoul, whether you've been here for a while, or just arrived.

This isn't a compilation of Yelp reviews and information you can find elsewhere. Derek has taken the time to eat at all of these establishments and interview several of their owners. You get both a guide to the restaurants and a look into the quickly changing world of international cuisine and culture in Seoul. Very cool. Well worth your time and money.

A tasty road map to where to eat in Seoul By Leslie Patrick An excellent guidebook for foodies or those looking for a place to eat in Soul's most diverse neighborhood. I have lived in Korea for almost three years and I still hadn't heard of some of the restaurants in this book. It's a tasty road map to restaurants in the area with a lot of behind-the-scenes information. Loved it!

Outcast is an eclectic mix of poetry which, in the space of 50 haunting poems, touches nearly every aspect of modern life. Career, war, love, friendship, family, education, consciousness are all laid bare in a simple poetic style, revealing the characters’ lives through their senses, perceptions, and emotions. All the poems are written in the first person with just a sprinkling of metaphor. Though the dystopian struggles of 21st century humanity are plain to see, the author refrains from preaching solutions to these struggles, preferring instead to let the reader judge for himself how to react to these aspects of modern life. Outcast presents the reader with a rare opportunity to pause and reflect on where humanity is headed—pell-mell toward a future of unthinkable change and often at odds with the American ideal.

All are captured with haunting sentiments of disdain, apathy, hopelessness and futility, touching the innermost core of ones soul! The poetry explores how humanity can become innocently lured into the trappings of conformism leading to the loss of subconscious diversity, creativity and imagination, with the culmination of a traumatised, fractured mind with the erosion of individualism.I especially loved the focus on potent imagery synonymously placing me with the " intent" of each poem, reinforcing how the mind faces inescapable "ill effects" created by psychological impediments through constant and relentless 'change' in the working environment, subtly manipulating and transforming aspects of our human nature into an automated form.In other areas of proletarian dystopia, I felt an extraordinarily high magnitude of empathy, helplessness and pain as you revealed in very raw and explicit means, how individual lives can be shaped and predetermined by environment and circumstance, culminant in a forsaken, forlorn and ill fated, despondent existence.I believe this book to be of great significance, taking us on a journey into the mind, revealing devastating exploitation techniques and the effects they have on the human psyche. " Outcast" is a journey from the 'present" into the ' future' offering us knowledge and instilling discernment, serving a cautionary warning of heightened societal dysfunction, with possible dire results, effecting the whole of civilzation!!BRILLIANT!!M.C.A Woods

Early one morning, Vrajendra-nandana Śrī Śyāmasundara, the unrestricted carefree enjoyer of rasa, disguised Himself as a young woman of heart-stealing beauty and went to the courtyard of Śrīmatī Rādhikā. Covering His lotus-like face with a crimson veil, He appeared before Her, His eyes bashfully lowered. Within His heart, He yearned to hear of the excellence of Her love for Him and the inferiority of His love for Her.

Treasure Chest of Love By Mark Twain This gorgeous book describes how Krishna dressed Himself as a devi, a heavenly damsel, in order to meet with His beloved, the beautiful gopi maiden, Radha. It is an example of Sanskrit haute-couture and is a religious text, yet deals with sublime conjugal love.It contains the original Sanskrit poetry (in English script) with translations & brief commentary by the renowned Vaishnava guru and author Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja.

The book her devoted readers have been waiting for. At last, New York Times betselling author Kathleen Norris's first continuous narrative . . .a story of sex, drugs, and poetry.

After spending her high school years in Hawaii, Kathleen Norris was woefully unprepared for Bennington College in the 1960s, with its culture of drugs, sex, and bohemianism. But it was also at Bennington that she discovered her great love of poetry, which carried her to New York City at a time when a new generation of poets was emerging and shaking up the establishment.

Working at the Academy of American Poets for her beloved mentor, Elizabeth Kray, and hanging out at clubs with Andy Warhol's crowd at night, Norris found herself immersed in an exciting and emotionally turbulent new world. Her memoir of that time - of her friendships and encounters with poets, including Jim Carroll, Denise Levertov, Gerard Malanga, Erica Jong, James Merrill, Stanley Kunitz, and James Wright - is an inspiring tribute to poetry and a stunning evocation of time and place. Her tenuous balancing act on the bridge between naïve experimentation and indirection and the more focused responsibilities of adulthood, makes for a dramatic and illuminating account of coming-of-age at a tumultuous moment in our history.

Katz I picked up this book at the airport bookstore coming home from a vacation in the Bahamas. I was starved for something reasonably meaty to read having failed to bring enough books with me and having forgotten that they don't have Borders in Freeport. I hadn't read anything by Kathleen Norris but this book looked like an interesting, thoughtful coming of age story from the era during which I went to college. It seemed to start out that way. The first few chapters were an enjoyable retelling of the author's experience at Bennington where she was the proverbial "fish out of water". Those chapters were well written and fun to read. Then she went on to tell of her time as a young woman in New York City. Here the book derailed into more of a biography (hagiography might be a better description) of her mentor. If I were into the politics of the small world of modern poets, this might have been interesting. Instead, I found it laborious and not very interesting reading. Since I work in the publishing industry (although not in New York) and have occassionally been involved in business with some of the bigger publishing companies, it might have been fun to read about the politics of the publishing world. But this book was too narrow for that. The were parts though from time to time that were interesting, and I did enjoy the first chapter. I think this book sets the reader up for disappointed by its title and what it seems to promise on the cover. But I think if the book were more appropriately described its audience would be very small.

Introducing a Virgin: Miss Marketed By Virginia Lore The Virgin of Bennington by Kathleen Norris is misnamed, mismarketed and misleading to potential readers. Described as a memoir beginning at Bennington college and moving on to her first years in New York, the book focuses much less on Norris's coming of age than it does on the events before, during and after her friendship with Betty Kray, the executive director of the Academy of American Poets. The primary fault with the book does not lie with the author, who admits at the end of the first chapter that the story begins with "an untidy but cheerful job interview" at the end of her college years. It lies instead with whoever decided to sensationalize what could be described as a quiet but interesting book of tribute to a woman who devoted herself to poets and poetry. Norris's prose is clear and easy to read. But her description of her brushes with famous and not-so-famous poets in New York in the 1970's are not that interesting, as the encounters themselves tend to be of the mundane variety. The true kernel of this book is Norris's love and admiration for Elizabeth Kray, which is only briefly alluded to on the book's cover. In sum, a bit of a disappointment. For a true coming-of-age memoir, check out Susanna Kaysen's Girl Interrupted or the more recent humorously written Tender at the Bone by Ruth Reichl.

It is not brimming with one spiritual insight after another, unlike her previous nonfiction work. But those would be her greedier readers who, whether for good or ill, seek spoon-fed wisdom. This book is, instead, a fascinating illustration of the emotional, psychological, sexual, and spiritual development of a young woman who had the courage to accept the mentorship of an older woman, Betty Kray. Those who read this book on the surface will find a fascinating portrait of Betty Kray who, according to the documentation in this book, was the prime mover and shaker of the Academy of American Poets in its earliest years. The Academy was largely responsible for the discovery and promotion of many of our best-known contemporary American poets (Denise Levertov, James Merrill, Stanley Kunitz, and many others).Students of literary history, as well as those who enjoy reading memoirs, will respond well to this engaging, previously undocumented account of the rise of contermporary American poetry. However, more discerning spiritually-minded readers will go one step further in their understanding of this book, for Norris has written a beautiful, deep illustration of moral development and mentorship. Dare I call it spiritual direction? If one knows what to look for, one can see everywhere in the pages of this book the spirit of God--through the unexpected figure of Betty Kray--shaping the life of a young poet.I'm grateful that Norris did not overtly spiritualize this mentorship, for to do so might not be an honest depiction of Betty Kray. Rather, for those who read carefully, Norris shows us that God's hand is everywhere in our lives, and providence abounds---if we only look for it.

This book bundle is perfect for the budget traveler. You will learn how to embrace the luxury of local living and learn the ways of the locals with this budget travel planning book. From where to go, where to sleep, how to travel, and what to eat, these books are packed with tips and experiences of how to make comfortable travel work on a shoestring budget. Each piece of planning advice is backed up with a breakdown of costs and daily averages to help you create a budget that is just right for your needs and interests. I have spent my life dreaming of foreign and exotic places. When other kids in elementary school wanted pizza, I wanted Korean food. When friends slept over and wanted to watch Bring it On, I recommended Truffaut. I was playfully pretentious, but mostly just obsessed with the world beyond my own life. Thankfully, a few lucky breaks, lifelong saving strategies, and extensive, creative planning have made it possible for me to explore the distant corners of the globe and start to satisfy my insatiable thirst for travel. I’ve travelled to 25 countries (and still counting) and more cities than I have the time or energy to add up. I’ve had the opportunity to call places as diverse as Paris, Los Angeles, and Athens home, each remarkably different from NY, in whose shadow I spent my childhood. I’ve travelled well, not only far but deeply, meaningfully. I’ve built up international experiences and knowledge not as souvenirs or trinkets, but as the very building blocks that make me who I am. International friendships keep me up to date on the latest and greatest cultural happenings in the world, but my first hand experiences can never be displaced. They’re a part of me. I’ve learned how to fit a happy life into the overhead baggage compartment, and I’ve also learned that with the right attitude, any place can feel like home. In these three books, you’ll discover:
  • How to make travel a priority in your life.
  • How to choose your perfect vacation spot.
  • Which resources and guidebooks to use to pick your ideal destination and plan your trip.
  • How to embrace differences once you arrive and enjoy your trip to the max.
  • How to find gorgeous options for places to rest your head without going over budget.
  • How to embrace local eating culture and have the best meals of your life.
  • When to spend, when to save, and when to splurge on attractions and mementos.
  • How to economise on transportation and experience the rhythm of your destination.
  • How to plan day trips that will improve your understanding of the culture and the region.
  • How to give gifts that say “I was thinking of you” and not “I got sucked into a tourist trap.”
  • How to incorporate your experience into your daily life back home.
  • How to do it all for $75 a day!

The Budget Travel Bundle By Jennifer Ramsey A very great Bundle for book reader.Katrina Green has written this book so well,a very simple book to read and also a great guide for travelers who cannot manage their money or budget in the entire travel.I really agree on Helen Keller's saying "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all".For me i love going to many places because it make me feel relaxed, but I spend a lot of money after doing it.I like the sentence that "Travel is only an option for people who want it,for the people who willing to prioritize it in their lives",this is true.Travelling is for people who had money and prioritizing travelling without thinking any option on how can they spend money wisely,or simply the word "BUDGETING".I experienced a lot of travel because I was attending seminars and training.I'am always thinking if my budget would be enough for the entire days or week when I'm in travel so I'm thinking I must spend as closed as $0 in my entire travel like the content in this book. The most powerful factor which I learned in this book is "COOKING OR YOURSELF",I know that it is the best way to budget money.Cooking for self while in travel is the right way to do because it can reduce risk of spending a lot of money for a meal.I highly recommend this book to my friends.

By All my friends are writers What an interesting collective read this has been!I have been working up to the privilege of European travel and this set could not have come at a better time! I have been able to develop a realistic basis of what to expect for my expenditures in book #1. The other two books are filled with how to extend the travel I so desire - being able to enjoy a little more luxury on a lot less buck! There was one spot in the book where the author really impacted my head and heart - noting the need of “throwing yourself into what is different and exotic and exciting..is to distill yourself to your most basic and true elements.”Loved the title of one of the books it will forever stay with me…Home is Wherever I'm Waking Up Tomorrow: What a dream life!Appreciate the efforts of this author, and recommend the read to others whose hearts are filled when they think about the joys of seeing just a bit more of the world.

And this set of three books is a real bargain. I loved all of them as they provide quite an amazing collection of tips, tricks and travel lifehacks for those who prefer budget travelling without compromising positive experiences. What I liked most (and what I agree with completely) is the idea to avoid tourist tracks and try local markets, foods, etc. Also, an idea to have as less stuff with you as possible is just great. That's what I've always hated about my fellow-travelers: they would have a whole lot of things they didn't need, and we couldn't be as flexible as I wanted to be. I personally always have a small backpack with me, and that's all. A great way to move quick and easy!If you are interested in REALLY useful and fresh travel tips, this book is a MUST! I wish I could give this book 10 stars... It's one of the really cool finds here on Amazon.

After a silence of twenty years, Jimmy receives an unexpected letter from his old friend and nemesis, George, inviting him on a trek along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Arriving in Lima, Jimmy finds the ailing George as mercurial as ever. They begin their odyssey, catching up on the intervening years, reliving periods when their lives had intersected, and revisiting the events that destroyed their relationship. Both men are haunted by the enigmatic Denise, the woman they had lured, loved and lost in Canada. Their conquest of Denise parallels the plunder of Peru by conquistadors Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro, the topic of a novel that George is writing in an attempt at self-discovery. On the Inca Trail, George and Jimmy meet trekkers Ali and Bea who exhibit the duality of Denise: beauty and introspection. They team up, even share tents. But there are many treacherous turns along the Trail before the travelers arrive in the sacred city where George is forced to confront his personal demons and Jimmy is pushed to reverse the legacy of the conquistadors. In this novel, Shane Joseph explores the hunger for conquest that drives change, the bonds of friendship that sustain faith, and the power of love that transcends evil.

Lind Shane Joseph is a thoughtful and perceptive writer, mostly of serious general fiction. By "serious," I don't mean devoid of humor --this novel, for instance, like real life, has its wry moments-- but rather a seriousness of purpose: he seeks to illuminate the human condition, in ways that will make his readers think and feel more deeply, and maybe grow personally as a result. I'm privileged to be one of his Goodreads friends; and since I'd earlier read and liked his story collection, Paradise Revisited, he generously offered me a free review copy of this novel, with no strings attached. It was an offer I was glad to accept, and I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. From internal references in the book, we can calculate that our main story here takes place in 2007. Like Homer and Bunyan (and many other great authors of the Western tradition) before him, Shane casts his tale in terms of a journey: an arduous trek on foot into the Andes, to the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu. But our travelers here, like many literary travelers before them, are on an inner journey as well, that involves looking back over pivotal events of several decades of their lives, from youth to middle age. The author positions his flashbacks with artistry, the past illuminating the present in a perfectly crafted tapestry. That's not to say it's made up of only, or even mainly, nice materials. In her novel Saint Sebastian's Head, LeAnn Neal Reilly speaks of the interplay of darkness and light in certain schools of visual art, in which both have to be combined to create the masterpiece. That speaks symbolically of the interplay of the two in life and realistic literature as well; and it's an interplay that's never been more evident than it is here. This is an ambitious novel, attempting to cover many themes in a short span, 236 pages (and succeeding admirably despite that constraint --or perhaps because of it; the effect of the honed prose is stronger than a more sprawling novel would be): the power of friendship, for both good and ill; the fleeting shortness of earthly life and the crucial importance of all the choices we make; the question of where you strike the balance between spontaniety and ordered control in your life; the way the sins of the parents, in the form of emotionally distant and/or abusive parenting, are visited on the kids in the baggage that they carry; and above all, the message that life and human relationships aren't about taking for yourself, but about giving to others. A native of Sri Lanka, Shane also is concerned with the negative legacy of colonialism for both conquered and conquerors; but he makes it clear that this macrocosm is a direct extension of the microcosm, how we treat others in our individual lives. (While there's scant reference here to Christianity, this is a message that's very consistent with Christian ethics.)The characterizations here are wonderfully drawn, a great strength of the novel. None are perfect, and George Walton is far from it: a self-centered, lecherous, foul-mouthed egoist and pothead who's capable of extremes of shabby behavior to get what he wants, and ruins lives in his wake. You spend much of the novel wanting profoundly to give him a hard kick in the buttocks. But you also see him as a hurting human who deserves your compassion, and who's capable of some moments where you'd like to shake his hand. Other characters who are more sympathetic also have their flaws; Shane cares about them all, views them all (or mostly all) with compassion, and invites us to do the same. He evokes the milieu of his adopted Canada with ease, and draws Peru with an assurance that suggests he's actually been there and is describing what he knows. Readers should be warned that there is some R-rated bad language here, including a number of f-word uses (mostly by George); there's also some explicit sexual content, used to convey the ugliness of exploitative sex, not to make it attractive. But none of this is gratuitous. What we have here is a warts-and-all look at modern life, with no stinting of exposure to its dark side. But unlike the writers of contemporary "literary" fiction, Shane Joseph's vision isn't one of unmitigated darkness. Rather, it's a vision of reality where hope for redemption and renewal has a grounding, and where truth, meaning and virtue aren't illusions. I'm not familiar enough with modern Canadian literature to say whether or not he's one of the more consequential and gifted Canadian authors of serious fiction writing today. But IMO, if literary criticism in a future generation ever recovers its soul and returns to the integrity it once had, he's sure to be in the running for that status.

By Waheed Rabbani Preface: This review was previously published in the Book Review Literary Trust of India April 2016 issue---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In a recent interview [1], US President Barack Obama said, “when I think about how I understand my role as citizen, setting aside being president, and the most important set of understandings that I bring to that position of citizen, the most important stuff I’ve learned I think I’ve learned from novels.” Shane Joseph’s latest book, In The Shadow of the Conquistador, is indeed one such novel from which we can learn much. While on its surface it might appear to be a love-triangle romantic story, it has a lot to offer in our understanding of the human spirit that at times lusts for conquest and colonization, but can develop bonds of friendship which sometimes can lead to betrayal, and yet through the power to love it can overcome evil. The novel begins in contemporary Toronto when Jeremy (Jimmy) Spence, a retired university professor, receives an email unexpectedly from his childhood school friend, George Walton, inviting him on a trip to trek up to the famous, Machu Pichu, in Peru. The letter is a surprise for Jimmy, for on account of some personal differences and George having moved to Vancouver, he hadn’t met nor heard from George for nearly twenty years. Although, Jimmy thought that Peru in the November rainy season might not be ideally suited for trudging up the cold mountain, he relents, feeling guilty at not having kept in touch with his life-long friend. His interest is also piqued when George mentions that having given up on academia he is heavily into colonial history and is writing a book about Peru, attempting to discover himself.Their meeting in Lima, while starting somewhat shakily, is like that of long-lost friends and they soon settle, over food and drinks, into reminiscing their past. Jimmy finds the paunchy and greying George just as fast-talking and—from his suggestion that they procure some local prostitutes—over-sexed as ever. He still possesses his violent nature that again gets him in trouble and ends up getting beaten, and his camera smashed. George finds Jimmy “still bone thin,” and when Jimmy informs him that he has been exercising regularly, George responds, while concealing his own terminal illness, “You plan meticulously, Jimmy. Gotta leave room for the unexpected.” While it seems strange that these two with diverging personalities were close friends, their bond was due to their mutual love for an attractive Montreal woman, Denise Langevin, they pursued. While Jimmy was intensely in love with Denise, it was George who ‘conquered’ and married her. We learn much of their private lives—mostly in Toronto—from their musings during the march. They recount their juvenile pranks, and their memorable and forgettable events that destroyed their relationship between them and those they loved. The novel’s plot thickens when they meet two other young Canadian women trekkers, Ali and Bea who bears an uncanny representation of Denise, in beauty and compassionate character. They are there not only for sightseeing but also on a native child adoption mission. Quite naturally the two bachelors get together with the women and even end up sharing tents with them. However, as fate would have it, other precarious twists and turns lie ahead on the trail that the travelers have to confront before they can reach the fabled Machu Pichu.Shane Joseph has skillfully structured the novel in alternating chapters that tell the story of Jimmy’s and Georges’ lives in Canada and their travel in Peru. While some may consider the constant flashbacking of scenes tedious, these in fact tend to keep the reader’s interest alive. The twin story lines come together at the end thereby making the conclusion most satisfying, and reveal the true nature of the characters’ personalities, and highlights their changes.Shane Joseph has also maintained the theme of colonialism and its impact on the native population throughout this novel. This is achieved in a unique way by introducing a historical novel within a modern romantic love-triangle story. Snippets of George’s book on the conquest of the Inca’s by the Spaniards—narrating the account of Conquistadors Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro—are deftly interspersed throughout the novel. From their story, readers can draw a parallel between the old and our present day lives, not unlike conquistadors’, and how we develop when we are young, and have to live with the consequences in our old age. It is then easy to recognize the impact of Jimmy’s and George’s pursuit and conquest over Denise and other women, betrayals of their friendship, and finally the resulting impact on their lives and reconciliatory changes which they attempt. While this novel is based partially in modern day Peru and its colonial past, the similarity to the harsh experiences of the native population from conquest and subservience in other countries is very relevant. There is much to be learned while planning for the future from such novels. Furthermore, in the words of President Obama, they offer an important set of understanding to our role as citizens. This novel will be enjoyed by all seeking to comprehend the human spirit. Highly recommended.Reviewed from an advance review copy provided by the author.[1]Reference: (...)

I was tired of playing it safe and having to tread water in the shallow end of life where no-one else felt threatened. I wanted to strike out and lose sight of shore. To swim in the deep end where the Wild Things roar. To grab life by the horns and stick a cattle prod up its ass and find out who was the better man! It's taken a lifetime of adventure and a world of pain to learn how to live and love without condition, but the essence of it came to me one day when revenge handed me the opportunity to crucify my best friend. I realized in that moment that who we are is not determined by fate, but rather our faith in the bigger hand that is playing our game. That while we are being played we have a choice; to become like the petty thieves and pirates who would see to our undoing, or confront ourselves and through courage and daring find a better way to end our story. Idealistic I know, but I have since discovered that it is the difference between a life well lived and one that is wasted on false gods and missed opportunities. I started my journey around the world as a philosopher and a seeker of truth guided by the ultimate question that haunts most parents; 'what do I tell my children?' On my quest I have climbed from the pits of despair to the pinnacles of success and the fallen all the way down again. Unexpectedly, I would find the answer to my question by going through hell. I might still be there now, if it had not been for her beautiful smile and tropical brown eyes that whispered "what if?" but ultimately it was her courage that saved me.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. compulsive reading By Riana I read Wild Rover in under a week. Lately, with a job and four young kids, reading anything is a treat and staying awake for more than 2 pages at a time is a miracle! But I couldn't put this book down. The characters became part of my daily thoughts. I was thinking about what would happen next when I was at work and was nearly divorced for keeping the light on too late at night. The bravery of the massive adventure the family undertakes is inspiring. What a fantastic memory for the children to have of their ocean voyage and the apparent creation of terrific bonds between them all. It makes you think, should we break free of the dull, hum drum lives we live, half in fear of change and break out and do something outside our comfort zone? When I had finished the book, I really missed the characters and wondered what had happened since. It was a real page turner. The way the book is written makes you feel as if you know the characters well. The language is relaxed and you are drawn in to the whole story. There are many highs and lows in the story and as a reader, I felt those emotions when they were supposed to be felt. Sometimes, it was hard not to be angry when the characters were being so badly treated but likewise, there were lots of feel-good moments toowhere one could only feel delighted or even sometimes relieved when things were going well. To some, the story may seem far fetched, especially life in the Middle East, but having lived there for 2 years, I am certain every word and more, is true. The frustrations and ineptitudes described in the book and the powerlessness of westerners there struck a chord and resurrected my old feelings of stress and anger.I look forward to more writing from Gary and his Muse!

By Alexander Smith Alex Smith (Leadership and change management)At half past midnight on 12th January I was up in a cold sweat working through in my mind how I would honour my own integrity and values and confront Gary Dennis with the fact that I could no longer be his patient, or indeed entertain any notion of friendship with a man who could do awful things to another. As ever, when faced with a “difficult conversation” I imagined myself saying what I needed to say. It was scary, heart racing stuff. Would I somehow become a victim in the next chapter of this extraordinary story? I was angry and a little scared. Next morning, just to be sure, I read a few more pages and found out that I had been "caught" by a great story! I'm still smiling about the whole “set up” and how he had “got me!!" He had got me, and not for the first time in the book, only this time it had been visceral. Wild Rover is an unexpectedly good read. I was hooked initially by an intense human connection with a man’s vulnerability and it’s power to create trust when shared, and shortly after by the promise of adventure at sea.Gary has shared stuff in this book that many of us would not dare to share, perhaps not even with our closest partners. It speaks often unspoken truths about our human nature. For me there was sufficient resonance with my own growing up, developing awareness of and acceptance of my flaws, to have me intrigued from the get go. I am not perfect, but had invested heavily in trying to show the world I was….and it ended in tears. So at one significant level this is a book that speaks about the liberation available when we find an authentic way of living, committed to living our own life not a life scripted by the expectations of others. The liberation is not an easy ride, but a life affirming one and that in large measure is what Wild Rover was for me. It made a real and deep connection.Several times I wanted to reach out, shake Gary and Darling and say, for God’s sake can’t you see how this is going to play out? STOP! Yet, despite the sequence of numerous harrowing events that unfold apace (and had me asking myself surely there can’t be more) a powerful pattern emerges for me. Trust. There are good people in the world and we can trust that if we commit to being one of them then we will attract the support we need when we need it.

I stormed through the first six chapters when I should have been fast asleep. There were several more late nights after that as I sped through the highs and lows as the drama unfolded. I was shocked and relieved and shocked again. For me, Wild Rover was about surviving when you should have been thriving. Surviving thanks to a generous gift from a good friend who hung around to make sure that the gift was put to good effect. And no thanks to someone who wasn’t the friend he was first thought to be.The kindness of strangers amazed me again and again and the warmth of the friendships and partnerships that followed made the pagesglow. The stark contrast between the good work that the group of families did for Molly and her friends and the efforts that so many people went to in a bid to undermine this good work was startling.I give Wild Rover 4 out of 5 stars and would highly recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure. Gary's writing style and language flow easily. The plot was just as compelling – rather surprising for real life rather than fiction. It reminds me of Shantaram in tone and that was one of the best books I've read in the last few years. To get 5 stars from me, the book would have had to be worthy of a Booker prize nomination, a work of literary genius. As it is, it got 4 stars because it really grabbed me even though I've hardly finished a book in the last few years because I don't have the patience for anything mediocre at the moment. As with all great books, I was disappointed to reach the end and eagerly await a sequel.

Baldwin Mwati Mwila's first collection of poetry, The Sweet Surrender of Love and Nature, is a beautiful addition to any library. As her line in My Love For Poetry, says, "It's my way of making sense of the world, to straighten it out when it is bent." Mwati writes from the heart and soul as she explores the tender beauty of love, loss, the growing pains of life, and takes us to far away places. Her easy writing style makes this a great gift for anyone.
