Jake and Angel's A to Z Adventures in Austin (Volume 1), by Mary Beth Harris

About the Author The idea to write her book came from the desire to share the cool places in Austin with her young nieces in hopes they would want to visit her someday. When she realized that other people actually liked the book for their children, she decided it would be fun to combine her love of travel and dogs into her books while exploring and photographing other popular cities. The revised version of the first book became “Jake and Angel’s A to Z Adventures in Austin”. Mary Beth had the opportunity to live overseas as a child, and realized the value of being able to see some of the world’s famous places in person. As a teacher, she realized that many children don’t have families that get to travel, so creating fun books with real photos of the well known sights seemed like the perfect solution. She hopes that her books will expose people to sights in various cities they have never seen and that children are inspired to pursue their own adventures. Mary Beth plans to write more books about popular places and things to do all over the world. The author currently resides in Austin, TX and is available for author visits and speaking engagements. A portion of sales is donated to a local animal rescue organization.

It is fun, interactive, informative, and encourages the entire family to go on adventures together. Whether you live in Austin or not, you will learn new things about the Music Capitol of the World. And you may even find yourself on a road trip to see something new in person. The interactive scan codes throughout the book give it added punch and let children really experience the place they are learning about. And the way Jake and Angel lead the adventure is so fun. Kids will have a great time searching for them throughout the book, as they get to experience the pups individual personalities.

Footprint books are incredibly comprehensive and a good travel companion. There are not many good travel guides to Valencia, Spain. This one helps with planning and while on the trip. It is surprisingly small -- only 103 pages -- and small dimensions for easy traveling in a backpack or a wide pocket. Most other Footprint guides are hundreds of pages. Too bad it does not have color photos or maps.

In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this audiobook abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning. This is not merely a travel guide; it is a beautifully written and highly personal view into one man’s journey and the insights gained by abandoning what is comfortable and routine.

“David Miller’s AWOL makes you feel the pain and joy of an Appalachian Trail thru-hike...In vivid colors, David paints a picture of his memorable journey.” – Larry Luxenberg Director of the Appalachian Trail Museum

Amazon.com Review David Miller's Top Five Items You Might Not Think to Pack for a Long-Distance Trek (But Will Wish You Did) Scissors: Scissors are better than a knife for common tasks like opening food packaging, cutting moleskin, or trimming your mustache. I carry the Leatherman Micra, which has a very functional pair of scissors and a knife blade. Suntan Lotion: The AT is known for rain, cold and for long walks through the "green tunnel." Yet every year, especially before the trees regain their leaves, hikers will get sunburned. Chafing powder: Hikers disagree about whether hiking uphill or downhill is more demanding, but they all agree that hiking with chaffed, burning skin is less tolerable than the ups and downs. Body Glide is another popular treatment. Trash Bag: Pack it in; pack it out... and remember to have something to pack it out in. A gallon-sized zippered bag usually suffices. Belt pouch: Backpack manufacturers have caught on, and many now offer packs with accessible pouches sewn onto the straps on their packs. If your pack doesn’t have belt pouches, buy add-ons. Keep your camera in your belt pouch, and you’ll take many more pictures than you would if your camera was in your pack. Also keep your spoon at the ready; you never know when your hiking partner might leave his food unattended. Photos from the Appalachian Trail Click to see larger images

Review Miller is a wonderful writer who...puts such thoughts on paper about as well as anyone. -- Robert Hughes, Florida Today Newspaper, July 10, 2006

Review

“AWOL on the Appalachian Trail offers readers an intimate grasp and vivid portrayal of the pure beauty and inspiring landscape of the Appalachian mountains and valleys… Whether an armchair traveler or an active outdoors enthusiast, AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is very highly recommended reading as a first-hand narrative of an incredible journey spanning the entire length of the Appalachian country.” – Midwest Book Review

“Readers who are considering the Trail or who simply enjoy being in the outdoors will find this book most appealing, but Miller's talent should bring him an even larger audience.” - Jeff Minick, Smoky Mountain News

“Miller is a wonderful writer who expresses the emotions as well as the facts of the world's most famous hiking trail… I enjoyed [AWOL on the Appalachian Trail] more than any AT book I've read.” - Robert Hughes, Florida Today Newspaper

He rejects his computer programming job, and with the consent of his family, starts up the AT. Thus the title.Near the midpoint of the story, there is a quote: "too much hard work, too much pain, too much time away from my family ..." but he continues. This is a success story. Though he does not say so, David is one of the stronger AT thru-hikers, big miles, day after day. All the usual injuries occur, but these are endured, rather than used as a reason to leave the trail. There is a community of hikers, and the sharing of intense experiences day after day is almost addictiveThe reader begins to get a feel for the rituals of shelters and in trail towns. After reading the book, a potential AT hiker should feel much more comfortable with what they are going to encounter. As I read the book, I kept visualizing the AT trails vs the ones I have hiked in California and in Europe - the AT seems much more difficult, though you have more frequent opportunities to get off the trail. The overall tone of the book is strongly positive. That's a little difficult to explain, since there is a lot about hardship, but trust me, you will understand when you read it.I recommend this to any long distance hiker, and particularly to someone planning to walk the Appalachian Trail.

I have to say that it is one of the most enjoyable, honest, and inspiring accounts that I have read in a long time. This is the best book on the AT that I have yet found.David Miller / Awol describes his thru-hike on the trail from Georgia to Maine in vivid detail; you really do feel like you are on the trail with him, sharing the highs and lows of the challenge. The conditions of the hike, the fascinating people that he met, the personal and physical challenges, and the gorgeous scenery are all poured into the pages for the reader to soak in.Although I have not hiked the trail myself, I imagine that this book is as close to doing it yourself as it comes. His ability to narrate the trials and tribulations without downplaying or changing the finer details was appreciated, especially for someone like myself who aspires to one day rise to the challenge of the AT.The companion web site is fantastic, putting the book in perspective with a wide array of dazzling photos. I found myself referencing them many times as I read new sections of the book. This book inspired me to take the challenge of hiking the AT and change my life. How many times can a book do that?Final thoughts -- highly recommended. 5 stars.

Strong writing and accounting from all of the parts of the trail make it a great book for those armchair AT Hikers like myself. It is a nice mix of everyday life and what it takes on the trail, trail relationships (some good, some bad), and various observations on life and the trail. What makes it all that more surprising is it is a Self-Published book. It is definitely worthy of a more tangible publishing house. I have read other books that generalize large parts of the trail and spend more time on the spiritual, philosophical part of why they are doing the trail but David Miller does not make this a predominant part of the book. Additionally I appreciated hearing about parts of the trail that most books seem to skip and it is a timely account from the year 2003.I also recommend Mic Lowther's book, "Walking North" for another nice combination of trail accountability and philosophy. Bill Schuettes "White Blaze Fever" is good for a great "nuts and bolts" account of the trail.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Everything you need By Randall Montgomery Good, solid practical guide. Terrific for a first time visitor. Really liked the Cotswold Way info. Liked his writing style too.Diz White, Author: COTSWOLDS MEMOIR: Discovering a Beautiful Region of Britain on a Quest to Buy a 17th Century Cottage (Available on Amazon)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Thorough . . . By Stephen Rayburn but a bit overwhelming. This guide seemingly covers almost every little village in the Cotswolds. At times, they all seem to blur together. The book is divided, however, into regions, so I suspect once I arrive in England, I will find it more useful. Plenty of good advice on where to eat, though, and lots of good detail about the MANY places covered.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great poetry, titillating interviews By T. McDaniel I began reading the PDF of this magazine online and thought it was so great that I decided to purchase a hard copy from amazon. The layout is gorgeous and the poetry collected in this issue is top-notch. Some of my favorite poets, including Bob Hicok and Terrance Hayes, are featured in this issue. The interviews of dozens of poets are fun and surprising, and I "met" many new poets reading through them. I highly recommend this one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By Mary L. Van Beuren Great poems! Nice production.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Didi Menendez's 'My Poets' By Grady Harp Anytime readers get the opportunity to read the sophisticated and highly polished poetry of Matthew Hittinger is a delight. In this series of publications devoted to new poetry and articles analyzing and commenting on poetry with accompanying interviews with the poets themselves published by the very talented Didi Menendez, this issue is a particularly fine one.Gracing the cover of this edition is the model handsome Matthew Hittinger and inside the book is a terrific introduction to the mind and talent of this young New York poet. In addition to the exceptional works by Hittinger are poems by an array of gifted writers, few of them writing in the 'traditional sense' but instead combining creative visual presentation of their words to make artistic wholes.MiPOesias continues to present fresh and invigorating publications that, when combined with the magazine O&S published by the same team, secures the position at the top of the heap of contributors to the vitality of the arts in America. Read this issue for Matthew Hittinger's work and become addicted to this periodical. Grady Harp, July 09

PDF Ebook Online Twilight in Italy, by D. H. Lawrence

This book contains D. H. Lawrence’s 1916 travel book, "Twilight in Italy". Lawrence’s first attempt at travel writing, it contains details about his voyage through Germany, the Alps, and Italy. Although fundamentally a travel book, "Twilight in Italy" is also a philosophic journey through alien cultures that deals heavily with the author’s own personal experiences when confronted with magnificent landscapes and mountains. This book is highly recommended for lovers of interesting travel writing, and it is not to be missed by fans and collectors of Lawrence’s work. The chapters of this volume include: “The Crucifix Across the Mountains”, “On The Lago Di Garda”, “The Spinner and the Monks”, “The Lemon Gardens”, “The Theatre”, “San Gaudenzio”, “The Dance”, “John”, “Italians in Exile”, and “The Return Journey”. David Herbert Richards Lawrence (1885 - 1930) was an English novelist, poet, playwright, literary critic, and painter, famed as the author of "Lady Chatterley's Lover" and "Sons and Lovers". Many vintage texts such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now, in an affordable, high-quality, modern edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned biography of the author.

Jan Morris; "It cannot be read as an ordinary travel book, for his voyage is philosophic, as well as a symbolic and sensuous one." Anais Nin; "The sharpness of Lawrence's eye is incredible... brilliantly informative, educative, entertaining and moving." Anthony Burgess

95 of 97 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully Written Travel Narrative By G. Messersmith D.H. Lawrence is better known for his various novels, i.e., Women in Love; Lady Chatterly's Lover; and Sons and Lovers than for his travel writing. With that said, I highly recommend this book. Personally I love Lawrence's writing style and this particular book is exceptional even for Lawrence. You will feel as though you are there with him experiencing the moment he is describing. The people and places of Italy come alive through his prose. His writing moves, at times, from reality and physical descriptions to abstraction and philosophy, but it is so wonderfully written, you will cherish every word and never question the move from one to the other. Images abound in this work and the scenes he describes are beautifully sensual. I have read this work twice and plan on reading it numerous other times throughout my life.

42 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Truly great writing By Constant Weeder I found myself reading, rereading, and rereading aloud, passages from this beautiful work. Lawrence writes poetically--never mind the sportswriters' rule against repeating the same word in a sentence ("Angels," "Seraphs," "Halos")--this author uses "dark" numerous times in a single paragraph. I felt as though I were in northern Italy with him. Incredible. Also recommended are his other travel works, such as Sea and Sardinia and Mornings in Mexico.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. One of the greatst travel books ever written By Jamie Much is said of D.H. Lawrence's fiction, but we've mostly forgotten about his amazing travel writing. Twilight in Italy takes us on a foot tour of the Alps all the way down into the verdant gardens and sun soaked plaza's of Italy. Lawrence, as always, finds small stories here and there that not only share a sense of place but also relate the experience of a real traveler. If you are a fan of Paul Theroux or Pico Iyer you will immediately feel at home with this book.

Rainer Torrence is everything I could have wanted in my life and more. He became my best friend when I was thirteen years old. From then on, we were inseparable. He was my first love and my first heartbreak. But I always thought it was forever. Until his father died and things went bad. Then suddenly, he disappeared. Ten years and I didn't see or hear from him. Then came the call I'd been praying for-he was back in town. Only the man I remembered is not him. This man is quiet, deadly, and so incredibly beautiful. He also doesn't remember me. He looks into my eyes and sees nothing. So, I let him believe I'm just a girl that walked into his bar. I let him use me on the cold, dark nights. I let him believe that I am as emotionless about our relationship as he is. I just let the secret go on and on. But all secrets have an end, don't they?Contains mature themes.

28 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Flawed Book By 1987 There was no real connection anywhere. So Emalie is in love with Rainer. They are best friends and manage to fall in love. Where and how. The story jumps and it goes back and forth with Then and Now ( and not in a good way) it still didn't provide all the details that would have lead up to this great love. Then Rainer appears after 10 years and has no clue who Emy is and is now in love with Pippa. There was no angst, no character connections and the story was flat from beginning to end. Bonus is it was a short read. With all the added character's there should have been more going on. What happened to Kenny? Why was Emy's family life so devoid of everything? Why was Rainer's dad a jerk? The book left far more questions than it answered.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Felt a Disconnect By Lisa Kane Rainer was introduced to us in Flawless Heart. He's in love with Pippa, Tyke's girl. But he has always been vague about his past, just saying he left some bad stuff behind. Emalie went to high school with Rainer. He was the popular one-the one all the hot girls dropped their panties for, but to Rainer Emalie was just a friend. She was a little plump, wore big glasses and was a tomboy. But she crushed on him anyway. Until the day that he disappeared from her life. She knew he was getting involved in things he shouldn't have been around. His mom took off years before and his dad was a drunk. Very different from the life Emalie lives-hers is one of wealth. It's 10 years later, Emalie has heard he's back in town and she wants to see him again. She sucks up all her courage, goes with her best friend Mimi and seeks him out. The only problem-he looks right through her, asks what she wants to drink and doesn't recognize her. For god's sake she lost her virginity to him (that's another story) and he doesn't remember her.I can't believe Rainer didn't remember me. How could he look at my face and not see the girl I was? We were best friends; we spent all our time together. God, we've been through so much. I'd never forget his face in a million years.Emy is determined to make him notice her. I'm not sure I agree with her actions but let's just say she's gets up close and real personal with Rainer. He may not remember Emalie, but he's going to be seeing a lot of "Mali" and she is hoping that eventually he will remember her.But Rainer has deep, dark secrets-ones that he shares with Pippa. He knows she belongs to Tyke, but the heart wants what it wants right? As all this is unfolding, I'm thinking to myself, this isn't going to be good. Emy is fighting a battle blindly and Rainer doesn't even realize who she is....gulps..."You can't always keep waiting for me, Rainer," she says, looking up into his eyes. "You have Mali now. She cares about you.""Mali is nothing more than a bit of fun. You're the only one who means anything to me, sweetheart."Just about now is when I started to really dislike Rainer; I know there are bad things that happened to him, but get a clue buddy, you are dreaming about a woman that you can never have in the way you want, and frankly, Pippa seems to enjoy having him wanting her. What happens when Rainer learns the truth about Mali? Why can't he remember her and what is the glue that binds him to Pippa?I'm crying so hard, and no matter what I do it just doesn't stop. I'm crying from years worth of loss and pain.By the end of the story, the gaps were filled in and the link between Pippa and Rainer is explained. As horrible as those things were, I had a hard time with Emy and Rainer's elationship. Emy's feelings of coming second were valid and I just felt a disconnect in her relationship with Rainer. I felt like he wanted his past back and if Emy hadn't been his first love then he probably couldn't have moved on from Pippa. It's difficult to like a story when you dislike the main character. On a brighter note, Raide's story is coming and it sounds amazing!

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. not for me! By PRISCILLA I was given an ARC in return of a honest reviewI feel like I am alone with my opinion of this book.I love Bella Jewels books but this one wasn't for me.I don't like reading bestfriends to lovers books because I feel girls get lost in the relationship their all about the guy.I wish I could of know more of Mali but the only thing she talked about was Rainer.I love kick ass girls this girl wasn't that and for gosh sake she gave it up to him on the first night she saw him again after he fled town. It wasn't two years it was ten years. The girls acted like college girls when they were almost thirty. How ever I did like the idea of Mali playing along when he didn't recognized her. very unique.Don't let my review stop you from reading this book. LIke I said Bella's books are amazing but not because this book wasn't for me means is not for you.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A powerful book beautifully published By J. Rastall After reading Les Kay's book The Bureau, I purchased Badass directly from the publisher. This book length poem is beautiful and moving. The journey of boys to adulthood, a close group that fractures as they spread out across the world. Kay chronicles their discoveries, their sorrows: "Once upon a time there were skateboard quests through concrete storm gullies" and "War makes villains/War makes a finer fugue" I wanted more. I loved every line, every moment with this book.

Best Ebook PDF Scars, by Amy Madden Taylor

Described as 'nostalgic, dark and enchanting', Scars is a unique narrative-in-verse from an accomplished fiction and essay writer. It is the story of a year in the life of a fictional family in the 1960's told through a series of poems 'written' by the 15-year-old poet-daughter, Hope. Madden's themes of loss, betrayal, and family role reversals are engrained in the text; we begin to recognize the voice of each of the family members, as the narrator relates the events of a dark year in their lives. The scars are literal, figurative and emotional. They form a sort of bond of intimacy which binds these characters beneath family tragedy and dysfunction. Deceptively simple in presentation, Scars is clever, unpretentious and moving. As a bassist Amy Madden has been a longtime presence on the New York City music scene. A member of the NY Blues Hall of Fame, her songwriting is acclaimed for its cinematic story-telling and unusual lyrics. As 'Writerless' she maintains a blogsite of essays, and as Amy Madden Taylor she previously published a novel, Losing My Accent.

Brilliant new book from Amy Madden Taylor - a unique poetic narrative from an undiscovered literary master By Louise Hunter I've been a fan of Amy Madden Taylor's writing for almost three years. I was blown away by her blog, which can be found at Writerless - My So Called Blog (Blogspot)Her keen sense of observation and the economy of her vision slices through the layers of bulls*** with which we pad-out our world. Her reality has sharp corners and hard knocks, but it also has a deep sense of patience, compassion and humanity.I moved on from her blog and read her "Young Adult" novel "Losing My Accent" ( available on Kindle Amazon )Amy Madden Taylor is seriously one of the best writers, living or dead, that I have read in my entire life. She writes how I would like to write, but I will never have that level of skill.Turning to her new book "Scars".The reader gets a fascinating insight into what it was like to be growing up in a dysfunctional family in the 1960s. Hope, the protagonist writes her narrative as a series of poems minutely invoking intense evocative sketches from childhood. As the adult world washes over the adolescent siblings, each has their own story. I can't give away too much, but I must urge you strongly to read this book.It is an extraordinary accomplishment, I've never seen a story told in such a unique way before and there is so much there; little triggers which will set you laughing and crying and remembering how it was when everything was still a wonder in the world.Don't be put off by the description "poetic narrative"This book is pared to the essence. It hits hard and caresses just as earnestly. You can take what you want from it. It's a slide show, some are portraits and some are landscapes, but all are studded with memories; words and phrases you will remember long after you have finished the book. Please buy this. It is available as a limited paperback edition or else as a Kindle Book from all the usual sources. I would be fascinated to see reviews from other people. I know my take will be different to how others view it.
