Piping down the valleys wild, Piping songs of pleasant glee, On a cloud I saw a child, And he laughing said to me: ‘Pipe a song about a Lamb!’ So I piped with merry cheer. ‘Piper, pipe that song again.’ So I piped: he wept to hear. ‘Drop thy pipe, thy happy pipe; Sing thy songs of happy cheer!’ So I sung the same again, While he wept with joy to hear.

This book is not the book the other reviewers are talking about By Soski Other Amazon users may be familiar with the Amazon.com practice of posting the Editorial reviews from a SIMILAR product and adding marginal and easy-to-overlook footnotes stating that the posted reviews actually refer to an "alternate paperback edition." I was not aware of the practice before purchasing this book, but aside from that there is no twin footnote floating around the section below the Editorials to tell you that the reviews provided are from a different book as well, nor can you see what book is ACTUALLY being reviewed unless you leave the book's page and go to See All. Most of the reviews are for this book:Songs of Innocence and Experience: Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul, 1789-1794 (Worlds Classics) [Paperback] William Blake (Author, Illustrator), Sir Geoffrey Keynes (Introduction) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0192810898/ref=dp_proddesc_2?ie=UTF8&n=283155Why post reviews of a book that the reviews are not for, on its own page? That is not only confusing, but misleading. The book I bought and received is the one with a portrait of Blake on the cover, and its ISBN is 97816119492998--which is not the ISBN posted in Amazon.com's section, as of June 1, 2012. Amazon lists it as xxxxxxxxxx2997.There are NO illustrations in this edition. In fact, there isn't any publisher information beyond "Printed in the USA" on the bottom of the first page after the cover. I have not read this book, and am not familiar enough with Blake's work to be able to determine off the cuff if there are any errors or typos. I am assuming that if you only want the poetry of Songs of Innocence and Experience, than it is probably fine--and yes, most likely free of errors/typos. But this book is not an Oxford or any other dependably high-quality published edition. Most importantly, it is not the book that other customers reviewed, it is not a very high-quality or compelling edition in general, and it has no illustration plates. Do not buy this edition if you are a bibliophile looking for a beautiful and collectible book and/or you really want to experience the work of William Blake as it is meant to be experienced--that is, with his illustrations.

He is often overlooked because of the obliqueness of many of his poems. But this affordable (read: cheap) collection of poems is well worth the price of admission. Most of Blakes most famous and well loved poems are included in this volume. Most of us had to read at least a couple of these poems in school. The Tyger still stands as one of the great poems of the English language. The Fly, The Lamb, Children of a Future Age, London and Ah, Sunflower are all included here. These are some of the most beautiful poems ever written. Even if you struggle to understand the meaning, the sheer beauty and music of the verses can still carry you away. Anyone interested in poetry needs to read these poems. It is among the best ever written.

28 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Not for the tone deaf By Giuseppe C. To begin with, it can be helpful to distinguish between "aesthetic" worldly poets/musicians and "vatic"/prophetic artists. Keats and Shakespeare, Ellington and Bill Evans belong in the first category; Shelley and Milton (and, of course, Dante) along with John Coltrane and Sun Ra belong in the second.Blake is the foremost representative of the latter group--the bards (Milton was his hero; America's Ezra Pound his foremost descendant). Of all the so-called "Romantic" poets, he is in many respects the most atypical. Time, its passing, its presence as "personal memory," specific referents to particular places, the fleshing-out of human figures, whether upper or lower class--all this is of little interest to the visionary prophet written off as "crazy" during his life-time, eventually canonized by the Beatniks in the 1950s, and finally admitted to respectable academia. Earthly phenomena are of little interest to him because, frankly, they have no status in reality. I deliberately steer students away from his graphic art, because its symbolic nature is poorly understood by a generation brought up on images that glorify the material world (if the emphasis isn't on the "real," it's on the surreal or "hyper-real"--but the real with which today's readers identify is anything but the spiritual cosmos that Blake finds everywhere, whether a tiger or a grain of sand. (Pity his wife, who understandably had little patience with him.) More often than not, Blake's pictures nowadays detract from, rather than support, the poetry. When Blake said, "the eye can see more than the heart can know," he envisioned a human potential which few are able to realize--the sort of epiphany granted to the prophet who, after a lifetime of struggle, sees the New Jerusalem or, like Dante, the Godhead itself (the spinning wheel at the end of The Paradiso).Blake's poetry, in both the Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, is music that, even when tranquil and serene on the surface, is never resolved in its minor modalities and dissonant counter-themes. In the second set of poems, that verbal music rises to a deafening fortissimo in the poem "London," in which the speaker, above all, "hears" in every cry--from the infant's to the prostitute's to the numerous thralls of the church, state and crown--a threnody of pain and suffering that climaxes in an uproar of righteous anger and indignation at the horrible realization of the consequences of "mind-forged manacles" upon the world and its inhabitants. But even in the poems from the early collection, the tone is characterized by ever-present irony--the disjuncture between the voice of the innocent child and that of the poet who knows all too well what is in store, or the disparity between the trusting faith of the child and the selfish scenarios of the "wise" keepers--the grey-haired beadles--who will violate that trust with their well-laid plans. Blake's message is unceasingly twofold--first, a testament to the holy birthright of the human child and, second, withering criticism of the "rational engines" of society that will act to estrange the child from the Father, from the Son, from its own spiritual identity. Each of the poems may be read simply, but make no mistake about it: each is ironic and complex, inexhaustibly so. The reader must, with each passing word, be attuned, above all, to irony, ambiguity, and radical shifts in tone--or risk inflicting upon the poet the same distortions the poet finds in human society. The "enemy" is not the "Tiger" which, like the Lamb, is merely evidence of Divine Mystery and Power--but of another order. For Blake, the Lamb, the Tiger, the babe--and a poisonous reptile or virus--are created by God and are equally holy. And now the true antagonist makes its appearance: human reason and its institutions--climaxing in the state-sanctioned marriage of children and parents to the "bridegroom" of organized government and religion. It can be discouraging to read these poems with students and discover, practically without fail, that a large majority will misinterpret them, frequently coming to conclusions opposite to the evidence of the poems individually as well as collectively. The reasons are at least three-fold: fast and careless readings of short poems that often require (and deserve) the amount of time devoted to a novel; imposition of one's own belief system (or instilled principles and conventional aphorisms); the sheer challenge offered by Blake's "radical" ideas and their deceptive expression. Those who are serious about poetry and Blake will no doubt soon infer his "message": we must see not with the eye of reason, which measures and "charters" the flowing Thames as readily as it maps out the dehumanizing streets of London, but with the imagination, with the symbolic faculty that enables us to see the underlying spiritual basis of all material reality and thus to empathize with all living things and to live in harmony only with what is alive and vital. Blake is the first thinker I'm familiar with who puts the child first and foremost--and not until the early 19th century. For the Age of Enlightenment (The Age of Reason), children simply don't count. They have no individualism, no identity, no status in art and literature. In his own time, children were little more than the utilitarian objects of the Church-State, deployed to sweep chimneys, then disposed of. The dying chimney sweep of the first "Chimney Sweeper" poem (how regrettable that many readers do not even understand that little Tommy Dacer's "awakening" at the end of the poem is possible only because of his "murder" by the church) is, in the 2nd poem of the same title, a dead child, whose excoriating criticism includes his parents but is leveled primarily at the church. Some readers dismiss the second poem because it doesn't make sense to have a dead child lying in the snow and speaking--it's not rational. But that's to place ourselves at the mercy of the poems' judgments--as misguided tools of Reason, deaf to the harmonious world and the discordant society around us. If it helps to postpone taking on some of the more difficult poems in either collection, fine. But each poem, each ironic line and musical phrase, each word and note of sorrow or joy is integral with the whole, each part absolutely and completely consistent with the overall theme, meaning and purpose. Seeing with the imagination requires practice and patience: reclaiming one's inner child (Wordsworth's "child-philosopher" who, trailing clouds of glory, is borne of another realm and place) is not a piece of cake. Neither is reading Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience.

To me it is a great renewal of a memory. The style is a bit dated but it is a great replacement for a book I lost along the way in my travels.

Ebook PDF The Cuban Missus Crisis, by David M. Addison

In this humorous travelogue round Cuba, the hapless author suffers from both urban myths and his Missus (aka the Drinks Police). The first he debunks as they occur; the crises his Missus causes, or would have caused but for his timely intervention, are a more serious matter. Acutely aware that Cuba is certain to change in the near future and probably radically, award-winning author David M. Addison was anxious to experience the country as it is now, under communism and Castro. Apart from describing what daily life is like for ordinary Cubans, he also delves into Cuba's past – from the original inhabitants and post-Columbian conquest to the Wars of Independence and the Bay of Pigs and its aftermath. On the literary trail, Addison pays homage to Hemingway as he follows in his footsteps. And if that should necessitate a visit to a bar or two, that can't be helped. It's not a lame excuse for a bar crawl despite what the Drinks Police may think. It goes without saying that in Cuba you can't avoid classic cars and cigars but the author also takes a close look at Cuba's art and architecture, flora and fauna and not least, the country's other most famous product – rum. Another cause for a crisis as far as the Missus is concerned. A mine on all aspects of Cuban culture both past and present, this is useful background reading for anyone intending a visit to Cuba as well as being a handy accompaniment to your guidebook when you go. Or, if armchair travelling is more your thing, pour yourself a glass of rum or mix a mojito and learn and laugh your way round Cuba.

About the Author Award-Winning author David M. Addison wasn't born yesterday, in Banff, and now lives in central Scotland with his carer. When he manages to slip out on his own, he will most likely be tracked down hunting for bargains in the wines and spirits aisle of the supermarket or imbibing real ales in his local hostelry. Away from his laptop, he relaxes by playing rough games with his grandchildren or taking them to the park where you might see him sliding down the chute or on the swings.

In it, the David Addison and his wife take an intimate tour of the island with another couple under the direction of a seasoned guide and her driver. They explore historic neighborhoods and their buildings, Hemingway’s haunts, the Bay of Pigs and Cuba’s cuisine. The US embargo and the resultant infrastructure deterioration, adaptive policies and resilience of the Cuban people are laid open for all to see. The text is sprinkled with historical and literary references which push one to find out about a variety of other subjects.Addison succeeds in creating a narrative which gives an on the ground orientation for the tourist, including the good and the bad, and serves as an excellent orientation for travelers both actual and armchair.

Essential Companion for Any Traveler By Clayton S Wilson I took this book - as well as the one on Istabul - on my recent vacation to both these incredible places. I have always loved DK travel books for the detailed and easy to digest information and the layout of the books based on the destination each volume investigates. I love the suggested "must see" lists and the suggested plans for travelers with limited time. Can't wait to decide where to go next and order the DK guide for my next adventure.

One note is that the museum near the Copenhagen train station that is listed as Free on Sunday changed its schedule. It's now free on Tuesday I believe (they had too many people reading these books and trying to get in on Sunday so they changed the schedule).

By Joejoe I was looking for a guide about Copenhagen but I couldn't find it, and I had to buy a guide for the whole country. The city is not enormous and so the guide is fair enough for a weekend in the capital city of Denmark.Lonely Planet is always a guarantee.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. One of Lonely Planet's great books! By P. Faraday This book is truly a great book. Lonely Planet has wonderful guides for many different places across the world, and first off, I would definitely suggest that you grab one or two if you are planning to go on a trip. In this specific guide, Carolyn Bain and Cristian Bonetto, the authors, do a great job explaining everything you need to know about Denmark. One thing that stuck out to me when I read this book, is that in the top 15 places to visit in Denmark, #7 is Legoland. Fun fact: Legos come from Billund, Denmark. So definitely stop by there if you want to check out the founders of Lego! Something else I liked about this book is that Bain and Bonetto put in the best times to go to Denmark, when it's hot there, and when it's cold. They also put in what restaurants are good, and where hotels are good in terms of quality and prices. What I like most about this book, is that Bain and Bonetto added in transportation information. They tell you the best places to go on public transportation. I also loved the section in the back about where to take your kids. There are always so many fun adventures in these Lonely Planet guides, and some of them are the museums in Aarhus.I can't wait to discover all of these wonderful places in Denmark. I definitely recommend this book to all of those people who are even just a tiny bit curious about what fun adventures lie in the area.I would like to thank Lonely Planet for graciously supplying this book in exchange for this review.

He also plays the guitar, sings with his wife, Randa, and does some songwriting. He loves traveling and just three years ago started a new hobby that may border on obsession: mud runs such as “Warrior Dash,” “Rugged Maniacs,” and “Ruckus.” Those interests are reflected in different meditations.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Poet with a Pastor's Heart By Lit Prof In Tears and Prayers, Doc Arnett suggests--among many others--this sharp truth: "We are touched by light / and shaped by shadows." In the next fifty or so pages, he draws exquisitely the living details that support his claim. Arnett has the carpenter's chest of any good contemporary poet: a keen attention to sound; a fine sense of the line break; a gift for metaphor; a clear, experienced attention to the natural world; and, maybe most of all, the workman's dedication it takes to discover, in the confines of the commonplace, something of the Divine. But what separates this collection from most of the poetry books I've recently read is something quite different and rare: a pastor's heart. Unlike many good contemporary poems that seem to deflect our readerly attempts at understanding, Arnett's verse offers itself with both hands open. And it offers deep rewards for anyone ready to accept what he has to give. These poems stand somewhere between the poetry of his fellow Kentuckian Wendell Berry and the sermon you heard last Sunday--assuming it was a really good one.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is the most inspiring thing I've read in a long, long time. By Tom Hale Doc Arnett, with his words, can break your heart…and then heal it, leaving it stronger and more resilient. Tears and Prayers is beautifully written. And powerful. And (fill in the blank with all good things). This is one of those rare books you will treasure and share. Buy at least two because you’ll loan them and give them as gifts. Doc may not make house calls, but he sure does hit home.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. this book is a treasure you will read often and pass on to those you love. By Kenneth Adams Because it is hard to put down, one will have a tendency to read this book much too quickly. Each page is worthy of several minutes, if not hours, of reflection. I shall read it again and again taking more time to meditate on the soul searching issues Arnett presents so thoughtfully, with understanding that gives evidence of the path he has traveled. Arnett bears his soul in the writing of this book and I found that my soul was laid open in the reading of it. If you have ever suffered loss, or felt the crushing weight of the burden of sin, and yet found hope beyond the veil of suffering and fear; this book is a treasure you will read often and pass on to those you love.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. solid. By kskdn You know, there's a lot of mediocre poetry in the world, and even the poetry section of your nearest B&N can seem dry sometimes. I really did enjoy this collection though. I think that this, together with Terrance Hayes' "wind in a box", are possibly my favorite recent poetry books.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fresh language, insight By Scholar-Artist It's a rare moment to read a poet's first book and be so taken with it's fresh language and vivid insight about the human condition. Kusserow's experience as an anthropologist makes these poems plated with meaning--crossing and questioning dichotomies of class, place, and spiritual longing from East to West. This is a rave.

A good poet is a storyteller at heart. Like a journalist, a diner poet actively seeks out an engaging story. But instead of finding a narrative filled with grim statistics, and worldly cynicism designed to sell papers, a diner poet seeks out fun and inspiring stories by going to diners, truck stops, and doughnut shops of the nation to talk with, or perhaps eavesdrop on regular folk. What ever is on their minds becomes the canvas for diner poetry: faith, politics, dreams, history and even the constitution are probed. God often shows up in Diner Poetry, by reaching down and stirring up the pot of our corporate slavery or our narrow provincialism. Filled with witty political insinuation and historic references, the rhythms of Diner Poetry skip and dance – breathe – and then gallop!

The Adventures of a Diner Poet: A Mack Capped Romp through the Canadian Dinerscape, by Jaybo Russell

About the Author My love of a good story comes from my family. My grandmother hooked me on tales of her uncle - who at age 17, ventured alone from the farm in South Dakota to the gold fields of the Yukon in hopes of striking it rich. I was mesmerized when my mother talked nostalgically of her adventures as a cook aboard the Uranium Trader, a riverboat plying the mighty Athabasca. My first attempt at storytelling was in the second grade. I wrote a dramatic short story about Fort Whoop-Up - located in Indian Battle Park near Lethbridge, Alberta. In the Mowat-esque tradition, this narrative was rife with heart-stopping adventure - and some gratuitous mouse eating. In junior high school, I was a brooding poet and actor. Fortunately for the world, a girlfriend’s father mistakenly burnt my poetry collection in a tragic kindling accident. I kept busy in high school by playing rugby, but found enough time to write and produce my own plays. Unfortunately, people watched my plays - righteously indignant stuff about the injustices in the world. I somehow managed to win a few awards though. University was an age of discovery for me. My poetry improved - thankfully - and I won some more awards. I wrote countless articles for the University of Lethbridge's The Meliorist - a weekly newspaper that attracted many talented folk. It was here I created many lifelong friendships. I have since written everything from short magazine articles to in-depth research-based historical nonfiction. I’m currently working on a social history of Drumheller, Alberta titled Of Mines and Men - the Unmentionable History of Drumheller Valley. The universe has taught me countless things. One is that the learning never stops. Another is that positive attitude attracts positive results. When I'm not busy writing or exploring, I can be found restoring a vintage bicycle, or working under one of my Volkswagen Buses.

#1 bestseller on the UK Sunday Times list, from the acclaimed author of The Old Ways Words are grained into our landscapes, and landscapes are grained into our words. Landmarks is about the power of language to shape our sense of place. It is a field guide to the literature of nature, and a glossary containing thousands of remarkable words used in England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales to describe land, nature, and weather. Traveling from Cumbria to the Cairngorms, and exploring the landscapes of Roger Deakin, J. A. Baker, Nan Shepherd, and others, Robert Macfarlane shows that language, well used, is a keen way of knowing landscape, and a vital means of coming to love it.

Landmarks is both a bid to save our rich hoard of landscape language, and a blow struck for the power of a deep creative relationship to place."  —Financial Times"His writing has a confidence and enjoyment, a passionate purpose. . . he celebrates our vast, but evaporating, vocabulary for the landscape."  —Daily Telegraph

It is both a collection of landscape words from the British Isles and a meditation on writing, mountains and landscapes. It is not a quick read but something that satiates after a few pages, requiring digestion, or rereading. The place words are from a vanishing time when we knew our land like we now know how to get about town. The words shimmer with beauty even though I suspect I am making a poor job of the Gaelic pronunciations.I thought I was a pretty good writer but reading this is humbling in a happy way, taking pleasure in his writing and glad that there are people who can write like this.If you love nature, if you love words, if you think there is more than one way to climb a mountain (p. 63), this is a book that will give you pleasure.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another fascinating topic from Robert MacFarlane By macc This is a very interesting approach to nature and to language. Anything that R. Macfarlane writes is going to make me think, and probably point me in the direction of several other books to add to my list. After only 2 or 3 chapters of this book, I already have 2 other books to find and read. I wasn't sure what to expect. Much of this is about other writers and their approach to nature and outdoors. Each chapter has a lengthy glossary, probably 70% of which contains words new to me. The book is definitely British-centric, but don't let that put you off. Rather, let it start you on an exploration of how regional writers in the US relate to and reflect their chosen environments.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Words to shape our sense of place By Blizzard lizard In MacFarlane's words: 'This is a book about the power of language... to shape our sense of place'. Words gleaned from meteorology, words gleaned from mountaineering, Macfarlane has examined, sorted and stacked them all into 'word-hoards' - glossaries describing the natural world. His glossary on snow and ice contains almost as many words for different types of snow as Eskimos are erroneously ascribed. He treasures words like èit that show how closely we once understood the natural world, 'placing quartz stones in moorland streams so that they will sparkle in moonlight and therefore attract salmon'.Macfarlane describes how his book was partly a response to the holes left in the Oxford children's dictionary after the 'culling of words concerning nature': 'conker' making room for 'cut and paste'. If we lose such words we lose the ability not only describe but to see and understand nature. Scattered among the glossaries are essays on the writers he loves, and some of their themes will be familiar to fans of his writing. At times the expansiveness of the essays seemed at odds with the concise precision of the glossaries and I wishes that Macfarlane had applied his 'pemmican logic' to this book, packing in 'maximum intellectual calories content per ounce', paring back these sections.Macfarlane revels in the beauty and expressiveness of words such as aquabob and clinkerbell (icicles) - how they sound, how they feel in the mouth. He strikes new words to describe our relationship to place. He is 'north-minded' ('drawn to high latitudes and high altitudes') and drawn also to the language of the north, the cadence of old English, the kenning. His words, and the words he gathers here, will make you look again in wonder at the natural world.
