The Fair God: Or, the Last of the 'tzins : A Tale of the Conquest of Mexico, by Lew Wallace

About the Author Lew Wallace was an American lawyer, soldier, politician and author. During active duty as a second lieutenant in the Mexican-American War, Wallace met Abraham Lincoln, who would later inspire him to join the Republican Party and fight for the Union in the American Civil War. Following the end of the war, Wallace retired from the army and began writing, completing his most famous work, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ while serving as the governor of New Mexico Territory. Ben-Hur would go on to become the best-selling American novel of the nineteenth century, and is noted as one of the most influential Christian books ever written. Although Ben-Hur is his most famous work, Wallace published continuously throughout his lifetime. Other notable titles include, The Boyhood of Christ, The Prince of India, several biographies and his own autobiography. Wallace died in 1909 at the age of 77, after a lifetime of service in the American army and government.

 Mary Ashley Townsend was a novelist, newspaper columnist, and poet laureate of New Orleans who made several trips to Mexico with her daughter Cora during the last two decades of the 19th century. She collected her impressions of many aspects of life in that country—flora, fauna, architecture, people at work and play, fashion, society, food—and wrote about them during a time when few women engaged in solo travel, much less the pursuit of travel writing. Her collected work was still in progress when she died in a train accident in 1901, and was never published.

Renowned Latin Americanist Ralph Lee Woodward Jr. discovered Townsend’s manuscript, along with many of the author’s personal papers, in the Special Collections division of Tulane University’s Howard-Tilton Library. In addition to annotating the text, he has written a critical introduction to the work that provides excellent background information about the author and places the work in its historical and cultural context.Townsend’s writing provides an unusual feminine perspective on Mexico as she describes the country during the middle years of the Porfirio Diaz dictatorship, a pivotal time in Mexican history. Though Townsend does not delve heavily into politics her observations of people’s lives provide a valuable source for social historians of the period.Here and There in Mexico will make new contribution to the field of Latin American studies and to the travel literature genre, both as a primary source for historians and as a well-written account of a southern woman’s impressions of Mexico during a crucial period in that country’s development.

Published after about 100 years of sitting in a college library, this fascinating sory of this women's travels in pre-revolution Mexico is full of humor, great descriptions of people and places,interesting tidbits of history,and a genuine love of Mexico and it's people. It was the era of the hacienda and pulque was the drink of choice. Mexico city had a population of 250,000 people! I only wish she had carried a camera with her! I really enjoy reading books written as well as this one. Interesting and informative. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in Mexico's complicated history or just interested in a good read.

Postcards From Slovakia is a glimpse of what life was like, for an Englishman at least, in the Slovak Republic; some years on from the Velvet Revolution and the Velvet Divorce, but still prior to the country joining NATO and the European Union. Postcards From Slovakia is fundamentally an illustrated version of the second edition of Letters from Slovakia, which gives an account of David's personal experiences living in this beautiful little country in the heart of Europe. The letters give a wonderful insight into the society and culture of the Slovak Republic at that time. The book begins with David's first encounter with Slovakia, in the summer of 1997, and continues until the close of his second year of living in the country, towards the end of 2003. The letters themselves have not been changed, but the formatting has been drastically improved and some beautiful images of Slovakia have been added. Postcards From Slovakia covers a range of subjects including the following: - "An Invitation To The Embassy" - Join David at a champagne reception in the Slovak Embassy, in London. - "The Journey From Hell" - David's first ever trip to Slovakia. - "The Heart Of Europe" - A visit to the geographic center of Europe. - "From Moravia With Love" - A trip across the border to the Czech Republic, visiting Zlín, a town in Moravia (Czech: Morava). - "Easter Traditions" - The "freshening" of women on Easter Monday. - "Making Sausages" - A look at how to make traditional Slovak sausages. - "World Champions" - Slovakia's historic victory in the ice hockey. - "Volby 2002 - Slovak General Election" - Slovakia's most crucial General Election, in 2002.
