Great Photos of a Great City By Dave From Ohio If you are looking for a 'tour' book of New York City that has alot more substance to it than many of the cheap, tourist paperbacks then this book is for you. The quality of the photographs is outstanding as is the construction of the book itself. All of the obvious choice of landmarks are included, but what is even better is the author/photographer includes many other landmarks that may not be as familiar to most visitors as they should be, and you will find yourself wanting to search out some of these 'new' locations on your next visit. Keep in mind that any of the photos in this book can be ordered from the author individually too. A great way to be introduced to New York or a great way to remember New York !

The 102-story Empire State Building, the 77-story Chrysler Building, and the Plaza Hotel all are featured here. Time Warner Center, whose twin towers rise 55 stories, or 751 feet, is in this book. Best of all, you can get this book and expect to find some of the newest buildings in it. That includes those three new buildings of the World Trade Center. One World Trade Center is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere--1,776 feet tall, with a roof height of 1,368 feet. The 104-story building is the World Trade Center's main building. The 978-foot Four World Trade Center and the 741-foot Seven World Trade Center are the two other buildings.Rockefeller Center is also present in this book. The 70-story G.E. Building is the centerpiece of that complex. There is Top of The Rock at the top of the 850-foot-tall building. This book is an absolute MUST for anyone who loves the architecture of New York City. I know I do!

By A Customer This is a very nice story of a disfunctional family which includes a distant father, an emotionally weak mother, a cold sister, a rotten big brother, and a physically weak little brother. The story focuses on the sister and her struggles between love for a rich cousin and her desire to help the poor of London. Thrown into the mix is an eccentric uncle who has eyes for his niece and an inheritance which complicates the issue. The question is: Is love stronger than hate, humiliation and the comforts of society. This is not a fast paced story but very rewarding for those seeking to develope their own spiritual perspective on life.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. fascinating examination of a brother and sister - one who grows away from God, one who grows towards God By deborah George MacDonald was a phenomenally insightful observer of people's worth and motives, which makes this account a fascinating read. The story primarily examines a brother, his sister, and his friend (who is courting his sister), along with many interesting peripheral characters. The brother, Cornelius, is shallow, selfish, unpleasant, greedy, and constantly feels entitled to more money, more respect, better clothes, and a loftier circle of friends. MacDonald draws a picture so accurate of this character, and how his family tries to excuse the obvious signs of his terrible character, I felt as if I lived in the home, I could so well picture the people in it.The sister, Hester, is actively faithful and constantly growing towards God. Her journey is primarily fascinating because it is almost derailed by Cornelius' friend, Mr. Vavasour, who begins to court her - thinking she'll give up her faddish phase of helping the poor when she is properly his fashionable society wife.Vavasour is also well portrayed as a shallow young man who appears good because he never disagrees with anything anyone says whom he wishes to please, but his private thoughts are always turned elsewhere, and his behavior away from the good people he wishes to impress is selfish, rude and unlovely. He is fascinated by Hester, but he only wants a desirable wife he can show off. Nothing she says ever truly penetrates his artificial surface, nor does she easily realize that what's under his surface isn't what she, because he never disagrees with her, took it for.I had a hard time putting this book down, but for me though the book as a whole was excellent, the events that wound it up were unsatisfying for me, so I could not give it five stars. MacDonald has an annoying habit of developing his female characters into such saintly people that they can't marry - no man around them has similar goals. He has also created some children so saintly that all he can do is kill them off. In the end, dead good children and saintly spinsters don't make a good story for me, but I would still recommend this book as good reading and very good Christian guidance on discerning some personalities that pass for "good" when they are really considerably less than good.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Contrast By JamesWorld Immersing oneself in the world of George MacDonald brings one into such sharp contrast with our world today that it defies adequate definition. So many of our world's loose ways we take for granted are raised up to examination in the light of better, higher standard. Weighed and Wanting doesn't leave one hopeless in the face of our moral and spiritual poverty. Rather, MacDonald has a way of giving one hope. Not hope for everyone all at once, but hope for oneself. If one will hold a higher standard and try to reach it today there is hope for all. The book is a masterpiece of inner conditioning.

My name is Lucian Quinn, and I own one of the most successful software companies in the world. Impressive, right? I'm also a favorite target for every hungry socialite looking to land the uncatchable catch. Maybe it sounds vain, but the fact that I'm a god between the sheets doesn't hurt my stock any. What these women don't know, though, is that I'm completely screwed up and damaged beyond repair by my past. But then I meet her . . . I'm Lia Adams, and I'm in my last year at St. Claire's University in North Carolina. I'm so close to escaping from my past and making my dreams come true. I'll do anything necessary to survive, even work as an escort to help pay for my college expenses. The men that I accompany to various events as an escort for Date Night are mostly harmless and just want an attractive woman on their arm for an evening. It has never gone further than that . . . until him. Contains mature themes.

The author spent to much time catching people up who haven't read the series. When I buy a 3rd book in a series I don't want a recap of the last 2 books. The only good part was the last 3 chapters. Not worth anyone's time to read. I am so disappointed because I thought this was going to be a great book and now I will never read or buy one of this author books again.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Loved the ending! By Nerdy Soul **review contains some spoilers**In the final book of the trilogy, we meet back up with Lucian as he tries to win the effects of Lia as they try and work through the demons of his past.Comparing this book to the other two books, this one is a bit more laxed in the drama department. And I for one am happy about that. The first two books were so jammed pack with crazy events one after another, it’s a nice change of pace. We get to see the sweeter side of Lucian as he finally lets Lia in and is certainly going to vying for your hearts for your ‘book boyfriend’.Lia really comes into her own in this story as she has to not only accept Lucian and his past but deal with the fact that her father wants back in her life. Plus her and Lucian find out whether or not they are going to have a baby. (Spoiler alert, but not really) she is pregnant. You probably were able to figure that out based on history of these kinds of books, but it is still a nice experience to watch and Lucian adjust to being parents.Landon is able to set up the next two spin-off books for this series, one for Rose and one for Aiden. It was prominent enough so that when you read those you can pick up right where the book left off, but not so much that it stole focus from Lucia and Lia.The ending was predictable, but not at the same time. You get the sense that something bad is going to happen at the hands of Cassie. I guess you can say ‘spoiler alert’ to that. But you probably already had guessed based on the emphasis that the book had on Cassie possibly having sleepovers out of the clinic. But that is probably the only part you will get. There is a whole other element to the ending that you will probably not guess. And it’s amazing. The story has that nice bow-tie ending with no major cliffhangers or bad hangups to make you angry at the author. You can rest assure that Lia and Lucian get their happy ever after that they both desperately needed.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Amazing!!!! By Crazy Cajun Book Addicts Blog It is not unknown that Sydney Landon is one of my all time favorite authors. I will read anything she writes because, let's just face it... the woman is brilliant at story telling. First she Pierced my heart with the first installment in the Lucian and Lia series, only to have it Fractured with the second installment. She has Mended it all with this story though. To see Lucian and Lia, two damaged souls being put back together with the help of each other is amazing. Landon takes you on a journey through the lives of Lucian and Lia and it is a journey worth taking. Lucian Quinn is a man any woman would be happy to have and whew does he get steamy. There were plot twists in here that I didn't see coming, which is another reason Sydney is so great at what she does. If you have yet to read this series, I would suggest you do! It will grip at your heartstrings and make you appreciate what you have. It is an emotional roller coaster, but it is all worth it in the end. Great job Sydney!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Victorian roadtrip By Bathsheba Everdene Dickens's first book and it's wild--like a prequel to the Hangover. The Pickwickians are either drunk or confused, they end up in the random, improbable places and eat and drink themselves silly. Reading this book, you watch Dickens mature as a writer and a man. It might be silly, but his attacks on pretension in politics and society are spot on and savage. Dickens is young, confident, and thrilled by what he can do. You can almost hear him laughing as he writes it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Snodgrass--all have become great friends. If you have not read it By Amazon Customer I read this book every couple of years or so. Mr. Pickwick, Sam, Tupman, Winkle, Snodgrass--all have become great friends. If you have not read it, don't give up after the first chapter or two. Dickens really gets going about a quarter of the way through the book. By the end, you don't want it to stop. This is funny, gently satirical, heart-warming. And this edition is well-worth the $.99 I paid--other digital editions leave things out! Five stars.

The Independent

Rosie unexpectedly meets the man of her dreams, Garry. This starts a sequence of events that will change her life forever. The young couple begin a fairy-tale romance, both looking forward to building an idyllic future together. But when financial and emotional difficulties threaten to tear them apart, shy naïve Rosie suddenly has to find the strength to keep everything together. Fuelled by alcohol, Garry turns into someone Rosie doesn't recognise anymore. Can Rosie help Garry and bring him back from the depths of despair and self-destruction? Their love had been deep and unconditional but will love alone be enough to give Garry and Rosie the future they had always longed for? Having just been stood up by the guy in her (Rosie's) life, the siblings decide to take the train to Bristol, a big adventure for them. Entering a dingy pub for lunch, the girls see two men playing darts - Garry and Fred. Garry, 25, takes a liking to Rosie and the feeling is mutual. After a couple of months of seeing each other the obvious happens. After giving herself fully to him, Garry turns up unexpectedly (remember she lived in Bath and he lived in Bristol - approximately 30 miles) asking to borrow 200 pounds, a lot of money back in the early 80's. The warning signs were there but Rosie was so in love she ignored/pushed them away. They married on July 2nd, 1983. Garry had started drinking more heavily before the wedding but Rosie thought it was wedding jitters and that he would stop after the big day.Several stresses - infertility, financial etc. impact their young married lives but it is not until quite a long time into their marriage that Rosie suddenly realizes that Garry has a serious problem. In many ways their marriage is a good one and their love is strong but that slow (yes it wasn't immediate) slip down the road to alcoholism really put a strain on Rosie and their relationship. How do things progress? How does Rosie handle having an alcoholic husband? This author's story written in the first person is mostly well-written i.e not that many editing errors. Although a little long winded at times it is never enough to turn you off the book. There is the odd swear word but not enough to be distracting. Yes, there are bedroom/love scenes but no real detail leaving that to the imagination of the reader. For those readers who have been in Rosie's shoes, you will understand exactly why she did what she did. This book may even help those who maybe are at the beginning of this slope to see how a loving husband (or wife for that matter) can totally change when alcohol takes over. Maybe it will help you do things differently before endangering yourself. For those of us who have never had to experience that, it is an eye opener to the why's and wherefore's. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I want to thank the author for being so open and honest in sharing her story. I would recommend this to others. Thanks, Liz

By Charity Rowell-Stansbury I received a free e-copy in exchange for an honest review.Based on a true story, Sunshine and Tears is an open, honest, and believable glimpse of how alcoholism affects the lives of alcoholics and the people around them.O'Neill does an excellent job of portraying the characters realistically to demonstrate how alcoholism escalates over time. Rosie initially dismisses her concerns over Garry's drinking, but then discovers how much he is drinking when she is not around.I like that O'Neill did not portray Rosie as weak or silly. Rosie is your average bright gal who just happens to find herself in a bad situation. She learns more about alcoholism, and really tries to find ways to support Garry as he battles the addiction; however, she eventually realizes that nothing she does will make Garry give up alcohol.Keeping true to the story's realism, O'Neill does not write in a happy ending for the couple. I do not want to completely spoil the ending, but I was impressed that she did not shy away from writing an ending that really demonstrates the long-term effects of alcoholism.Sunshine and Tears is a compelling story that will inspire other women who, like Rosie, are coming to terms with their spouses' addictions. If you know someone who lives with a loved one who has an addiction, I recommend that you read this to gain an understanding of how the addiction affects the addict's friends and family.

A Clear-Eyed Look at Love, Marriage and Alcoholism By Uncle G I finished reading this book over a week ago and I have been thinking about it quite a bit. It's a heart-wrenching novel about a long term relationship that goes through some extremely challenging up and downs. It reads like an autobiography. If you've had a loved one who struggled with alcoholism or substance abuse you know how intense and on-going the battles can be. This story may hit very close to home. If you have not had a loved one who struggles with addiction, this story will open your eyes to the depths to which people and their relationships can sink. The author does not hold back. The story is extremely realistic in the portrayal of some some very difficult real-life situations. The range of emotional experiences makes this a complete novel. The characters are all well rounded and live through an extreme range of good times and bad. As the story goes on, the drama and action pick up and your connection to the characters deepens.

So before going somewhere I need to study the information about the place I want to visit. Traveler guides may help with it. This one is about the Great Britain. It is the Land of Fogs. The history of this island is very long and intense. I'd like to visit this place very much to feel the wind of history. And the guide will help me.

Excerpt from Vittorio; A Prayer for Rest: And there you stand. Your eyes mirroring the inferno you hide within your soul. In all these years, I still tremble in your hand. Your arms are calling to me, drawing me in. My senses dull, a façade, threaten to scream from my skin. Vittorio, I have grown weary of the wait. I had once tempted fate and she accepted with a grin. I do not feel I could endure to chance it once again... Desire; The Thief Within is a compilation of modern poetry merged with beautiful photographs, and is sure to enchant. Take a walk on a poetic, photographic journey through the raw emotional world of love, and betrayal.

With dreams of la dolce vita, Michelle Damiani, her husband, three children, and two cats abandoned their suburban routine for Spello, an Italian hill-town. Escaping a lifestyle of helicopter-parenting and obsessing over soccer schedules, Michelle hoped to find a slower-paced life, as constant as cobblestones. What she found was more than she bargained for. She discovered that the armor formed over years of a predictable existence hid a fear of falling short and making a fool of herself. She discovered that even with her training as a child psychologist she was ill-equipped to protect her children from the old-world disciplinary style at the local public school. She discovered that making mistakes provides opportunities for warm instruction and care. She discovered not only that connecting with people can transcend language, but also how to cleave into the heart of village life, through festivals, celebration, and discussing how to properly cook pig skin. During the hospitalization of a family member, she learned the advantages of community gossip chains, which made her aware of the isolation that was the hallmark of her American days. She discovered the deep joy that comes from spending afternoons leaning out of windows chatting with neighbors about town happenings as pasta sauce burbles on the stove and the afternoon light slants along the cobblestone streets. Il Bel Centro: A Year in the Beautiful Center is a celebration of Umbrian life, a guide to the treasures of the region. More than just what to see, the book offers a lens through which to appreciate what has been termed, “the green heart of Italy.” Seduced by Umbrian wine and food, Michelle lovingly recounts stunning meals at Umbrian tables groaning under the weight of home-cured salami and tagliatelle with sausage, mushrooms, and cream sauce. For those wanting a taste of Umbria, Michelle includes recipes for local specialties (including step-by-step instructions for how to roll pasta like an Umbrian grandmother, and how to dress that pasta in swoon-worthy sauce). Through four seasons, she recounts the shifts in landscape from achingly green hills and azure skies to stone walls steeped in fog laced with Christmas lights and the heady scent of grilling meats to the emergence of poppies nodding their jewel-like heads at the foot of the mountains. But more than this, she provides a window into the people of Umbria—their deep-seated pride, warmth, humor, and welcome. In an entertaining style, Michelle provides historical background of the region and tells how Umbrians keep their culture alive today. With lyrical prose interspersed with professional-quality photographs, she paints a picture of Umbrian life that has been unchanged for generations. And weaves a spell not soon forgotten. The book, written in a daily style, is an intimate account of a family’s change over the course of a year. At turns laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreakingly tender, Michelle tells the story of her family’s transition from anxious outsiders to honorary townspeople, as they adapt to the gentle rhythms of Umbrian life. Il Bel Centro: A Year in the Beautiful Center evokes the pleasures of small town Italy and opens the gate into a world where a good lunch will take one straight into dinner. "I was not prepared for Italy Luckily, Italy was waiting for me anyway." Amazon Bestseller in Italian Travel

Il Bel Centro: A Year in the Beautiful Center, by Michelle Damiani

Review To fulfill a lifelong dream, Michelle Damiani moved her husband, three school-aged children, and two cats to Spello, Umbria in central Italy to live for a year.Although she found a community ready to embrace her family, Damiani also encountered several stumbling blocks, including language difficulties, bureaucracy, and differing educational philosophies.Written in a journal format that traces Damiani's journey nearly day by day, Il Bel Centro provides a rare glimpse into a transplanted family's sojourn in Italy.Damiani opens up and shows incredible vulnerability within these pages, and parents will especially appreciate her concerns and frustrations as a mother attempting to guide and nurture her children through this life-changing time. Her descriptions of the people, customs, and food of Umbria are particularly enticing. If you can't get yourself to Italy for an extended stay, Il Bel Centro is a worthy substitute. Highly recommended.--Michelle Fabio, Bleeding Espresso** A version of this review originally appeared in the Spring 2016 issue of Ambassador, the magazine of the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF)

About the Author Michelle Damiani is a freelance writer, clinical psychologist, and food lover currently living in Charlottesville, VA. Her heart, however, is in Spello, Italy, where she and her family spent a year growing accustomed to being fish out of water, grappling with the hardships of parenting on foreign soil, and ultimately cleaving into the soul of Italian village life. Before that year abroad, Michelle wrote short fiction--one of her stories was recently awarded first place in the Hook Short Fiction contest, juried by author John Grisham. While in Italy, she used the time that her children were in Italian public schools to write a blog about their experiences. The blog, Il Bel Centro, was awarded the bronze award for best Italian blog by Expatsblog. Once back in Charlottesville, she transformed the blog into a book, Il Bel Centro: a Year in the Beautiful Center, now available in print and e-book.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An excellent journey - brava! By Atul Saran This is ultimately a book about self-discovery. In our all-too-hectic lives, it is easy to get caught up in dealing with the mundane and not realize what we're taking for granted. How are the systems around us - the people, the organizations, the food, the language - actually a part of our very fabric and what happens when all that changes. There's a lot in here about resilience, but it's really more about adaptability and willingness to open your mind to something new. We also have three kids and struggle to make sure they make it to their myriad set of activities - I can imagine the challenges of moving within the country, perhaps to get a new job or to be closer to family, but the idea of picking up school-age children and putting them in a situation with an unknown language and culture seems daunting. And yet, the Damianis did just that. You leave the book feeling that this family is indeed a part of your own and the nostalgia of a friend you haven't met in some time, and both the triumphs and despairs become a part of you.I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, so I have had some time to really reflect on it. I love the blog/diary approach and the author really has a way of painting the sights, the sounds and the smells with words. Most books that I like, I just plow through, but this one is more akin to a long walk in the woods with new surprises at every turn – you don’t want to rush through it too quickly or you’ll miss something, and the destination is less the point than the walk itself. It also has another interesting quality – knowing that it is about a year in Italy meant that as the days (in the book) progressed, I knew how close I was to the end. You always know you’re close to the end of a book, of course, but I felt like I wanted to continue savoring the stories and actually had a bit of a reluctance to see it come to a close. There are so many little vignettes that I feel like I will carry away with me. Don't want to give any spoilers, but there is a particularly poignant moment when the author has a sudden realization how it must feel to be a foreigner in the U.S. - to be completely loquacious in your mother tongue and yet to be constantly fumbling in another language, imposing barriers upon yourself and hesitating to take yet another risk. I also absolutely loved the discussions about the elderly and the special needs children in Spello and how they are integrated into the community. The Italian systems are far from perfect, but they clearly have figured out how to draw the inclusiveness circle more broadly than we have in the U.S.And then there is the food. I haven't mentioned it yet only because I wasn't sure if I would make it to any other topic once I got to the food. But the incredible imagery with which the culinary delights are brought to life are absolutely drool-worthy. I literally would get hungry while reading, and I love that there are so many actual recipes thrown in (haven't tried them yet, but can't wait to give it a shot!).An excellent journey showing incredible courage to take a step into a new world. Brava, indeed.

By AmyWebbAdamo A sweet "ride-along" through 4 seasons of life abroad, getting to know the local people, colors and customs of an Umbrian town. I've lived in Italy for 15 years now, and this took me back to my initial days of tripping through my phrase book, ordering the wrong foods, getting lost and being thrilled about it, etc.Makes for a great "get-away" read for Summer.

A Year in Italy By Booklover Many of us dream of taking our children overseas to learn a new language and experience a new culture, but few people are able to actually pull it off. For the rest of us, we can live vicariously through Il Bel Centro.Michelle’s writing is so descriptive and heartfelt that you really feel like you are there with her and her family as they spend a year in Spello, Italy. Like the Damianis, I was initially uncertain, wondering how they would manage in a foreign country, and worried about their committing cultural faux pas. But just as Michelle accepted the Italian mantra “piano, piano,” and began to revel in the slower pace of life and sense of community she found in Spello, I too relaxed and began to sink into the book.By around October (the book chronicles Michelle’s family’s experience from July to July), I was just soaking up the Italian experience, enjoying each small moment, and appreciating the ways and wisdom of the Spellani. I joined Michelle in her newfound joy and comfort in not knowing what to do, much less how to do it well, being OK with that, and even relishing it.Rarely does one find a writer so open, who shares her struggles, doubts, and insecurities so completely. This is a deeply personal book, and we readers are lucky that Michelle is courageous enough to share so much with us. As she says in the book, it’s only by opening ourselves up and allowing others in that we can form the connections that make our lives more meaningful. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I know Michelle in real life (she’s a college friend). The beauty of Il Bel Centro is that it will make you feel like you know her, too.

Once the hub of the Mediterranean, Calabria now dangles, largely ignored, at the bottom of the Italian boot, struggling for survival, acceptance and a place in modern Italy and the world. Little-known even to Italians outside the nefarious activities of its ‘Ndrangheta mafia organization, Calabria allures with its simplicity and rewards with an underlying complexity, as in savoring an artisanal cheese, appreciating an ancient Greek masterwork or interpreting a particularly expressive phrase in the local dialect. Based on the author’s experiences living, working and traveling throughout the region, Calabria: The Other Italy captures the essence of present-day Calabria, weaving observation, personal anecdote, salient historical information and social commentary into a nonfiction narrative that combines travelogue with an exploration of everyday life and culture. At times humorous, at others poignant, this fascinating work shares the joys and challenges of the “other Italy.” From the moment author Karen Haid sets foot on the soil of this mysterious backwater, she is fascinated by the characteristic determination of its people, the wealth of its history and art, the beauty and variety of its landscape, and the rich culture, most often celebrated for its extraordinary culinary offerings. She presents a contemporary picture of the people and the place, putting the reader in her shoes, both as a resident and traveler in this oft-neglected region of Italy. From colorful tales of encounters with the Calabrese people to those of a windsurfing saint, from the unparalleled pair of 2,500-year-old Riace Bronzes to a couple of dancing giants, from ancient castles and towers to pristine beaches and mountains, from an intense wild licorice to the unique bergamot fruit, Calabria: The Other Italy explores an Italy less traveled. Along her journey, the author teaches English, studies Italian, deals with criminality, rides trains, confronts the post office, visits museums and historic sites, experiences festivals, takes a spa cure, pops over to Sicily and Basilicata, meets locals, learns a few life lessons and eats a lot of great food. This vivid armchair travelogue embraces daily life, culture, history, the arts, food, society and tourism of Calabria, a beautiful and at times complicated region in southern Italy.

Calabria: The Other Italy, by Karen Haid

Review After numerous visits to Italy, Haid found herself increasingly enamored with the country, so she decided to move to Locri, Calabria, to teach English and fully immerse herself in Italian culture. Haid's book recounts her four-year stint in Calabria with an intoxicating blend of humor, joy, and reverence for this area in Italy's deep south. The book reads like a travelogue, with long descriptions of train rides and encounters, but it also serves as a travel guide, with many facts and figures integrated into the narrative. Haid does not shy away from mentioning the negatives of Calabrian culture. Much of these are approached with humor, with the exception of the more disturbing aspects of the local community, such as the power of omertà (the code or conspiracy silence that protects outlaws) and the influence of the Calabrian mafia over local politics and other community affairs. The chapters about criminal activity are broken up into two sections and separated by other chapters, and this deft organization preserves the predominantly upbeat and inspiring mood of tour into a lesser-known part of Italy. PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY (BookLife)

Mccormick We have several books on southern Italy and Calabria specifically since my wife has numerous relatives there. This is without a doubt, the single best book we have read on the subject. The author spent some years teaching English there, first in Locri, then in Reggio. During her stay there, she visited a variety of villages and cities throughout the region. We have been there a few times and she vividly brought back memories. We feel that the mere fact that she is a non-Italian worked to her advantage in writing this book. Others we have read by people from the region or with ancestors from there write with something of an agenda, whereas her approach is more pragmatic. Her love of the culture is not only deep, but her observations are detailed in ways that might very well escape a person who is in any way native to the area. Should anyone be in a position to visit Calabria, or is even just thinking about going to Italy and wondering what part they would like to visit that is off the touristy path, this is definitely a book to read. In fact, read it anyway, It's beautifully written and very descriptive of a deeply historic area of Italy, with its ancient Greek roots (Pythagoris lived there) Few who visit Italy as tourists, and perhaps even few Italian-Americans with roots there, are fully aware of its cultural depth.

By Harris With Calabria: The Other Italy, author Karen Haid provides a contemporary, historical and personal narrative that has long been overdue for English speakers worldwide. The neglect and shallow perspectives of the Italian "Toe" are quickly dispelled and clarified, and even more vital are the fascinating details that lie with the people, culture, food and geography that should make this relatively unknown part of Italy a worthy destination. The author's writing style is laced both with humor and seriousness that will compel any traveller to have this book by their side on their next journey into the "Other Italy." I know I will. Highly recommended.

I'm also an American who lives each summer in Calabria, but I have family and a home there, so my experiences are quite different from Karen's. I found some of her stories funny, some a bit unsympathetic, and some just plain hard to believe. The last few chapters of the book turn into a travelogue, with a very different "voice" than the beginning, more a guide than a personal narrative. I did learn about some places we haven't visited yet, but life in my Calabria is much sweeter, family centered, and truly la dolce vita.

This collection of 106 poems by 44 female Tang-era poets is the most comprehensive of its kind. Poets are organized based on their status in Tang dynasty society: women of the court, women of the household, courtesans and entertainers, and women of religion. While each poet’s concerns vary with their social status, common thematic threads include heartbreak and the mysteries of the natural world. Thumbnail biographies of each poet and notes regarding individual poems complete this important collection.

Jeanne Larsen has published poetry, three novels set in China, and a book of poetry translation, Brocade River Poems: Selected Works of the Tang Dynasty Courtesan Xue Tao. She teaches in the creative writing program at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia.

Incredible By Rabbit the Reader What Ms. Larsen began in "Brocade River Poems: Selected Work of the Tang Dynasty Courtesan Xue Tao" continues in this wonderful, slim and accessible volume. There is so much more to Tang Dynasty poetry then Li Po and Du Fu, as enjoyable as they are. Ms. Larsen's translations and exegesis of the poems of some of the female poets of the late Tang and Early Sung illustrate the humor, the depth' in fact the whole emotional range that poetry has the power to offer.

Wonderful Yet Sad Poetry By JohnL The first half of this book has poetry that pertains to abuse, the other half has poetry that is somewhat uplifting. I personally hope these aren't written from experience, but by reading them and feeling the emotions that I feel having read them, I strongly believe that they are. Very courageous of someone to write about things so horrific.

A Story of Grace and Hope By Anna Before introducing you to Queechy, let me introduce you to its author, one of my absolute favorites, Susan Warner (pseudonym Elizabeth Wetherell). She was the sister of Anna Warner, who wrote the infamous hymn "Jesus Loves Me." That hymn originally appeared as a poem in one of Susan's books, eventually gaining worldwide fame. Susan's first novel, The Wide, Wide World, was published in 1850 and was one of the most popular early American novels. Queechy was Miss Warner's second novel, and one of her longest.Queechy is a deeply satisfying read, for one who is willing to absorb a long and detailed story instead of a whirlwind novel. It is the story of Fleda Ringaan, a young orphan who is faced with a string of joys and sorrows as she comes of age. It is a love story, but one that is much more subtly - and thus more richly - told than what we are used to today. The storytelling is intricate, full of deeply felt emotion, powerful imagery, and wry humor. Warner had an Austen-like insight into the quirks of human nature, and this often makes its way into the story as well. It is undeniably an example of "sentimental" literature, and it moves slowly and focuses on characters and dialogue rather than events.Christianity is the hallmark of the book. As one who enjoys reading contemporary Christian fiction and seeing how authors integrate faith with their storytelling, I find Warner's approach stirring, ennobling, and beautiful. Faith and religion are explicit, but not forced. They are such essential aspects of the story that they cannot help but make themselves plain. And they are moving, insightful, and built on Warner's excellent theology and tender love for the Lord.A surface reading of Queechy's heroine may lead one to believe she is only a precursor of the dubiously well-behaved Elsie Dinsmore (who is still dear to my heart in spite of her perfections). But a deeper understanding of the text reveals a heroine who is flawed, and who is resting on grace alone for her forgiveness. The purity of remaining "unspotted from the world," which is mentioned so often in the book, is not sinlessness, but innocence of knowledge and intention about the morally bankrupt ways of culture. This is the spotlessness which Fleda's friends desire for her.A certain sense of class superiority also pervades the story. Without an understanding of nineteenth-century culture, a modern reader may be confused or put off by this. Yet taking into account the feelings and ideas of the day, in both English and American culture, the Christian characters in the novel make significant efforts toward understanding how they fit into society and how they can interact with those who are not their equals in station, intelligence, or education. Some of their ideas are outdated now, but if understood properly, they do not detract from the story's strength.Yet another aspect that may concern modern readers is the serious nature of the novel. I can imagine it being labeled melodramatic and melancholy. Ironically, this serious tone is mentioned many times in the story itself - the contrast between the ways of the lighthearted, cheerful world, and the very sobering and serious life that Fleda is living. There are so many lessons to be learned from Queechy about what joy really looks like. This novel is full of passages that I want to frame on my wall. It is full of Christ's beauty and goodness, full of the knowledge that He is everything and the world and all its pleasures are passing away, full of the knowledge that life is only brightened by the wonder of His love, and that suffering is worthwhile when one is doing what is right. Rather than investing your time in reading yet another Jane Austen novel, try picking up Queechy, and immersing yourself in the timelessness of a story of grace and hope.
