Your all-in-one Guide to Amsterdam Museums, including guides to the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House and Hermitage Amsterdam
If you go to Amsterdam (Holland) and want to pay a visit to its world-famous museums, then this is your guide. All four volumes in this series Amsterdam Museum Books are written for people who like guides without art historical jargon.
Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is a lavishly illustrated publication containing the most important highlights of all centuries. Written in an engaging, conversational style, the book describes masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age such as The Night Watch and The Jewish Bride by Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, The Milkmaid and The Woman Reading a Letter by Johannes Vermeer, and the famous pictures by Jan Steen and Frans Hals, amongst many others. But the museumguide is not only about Dutch 17th-century paintings. It also describes the highlights of the 18th, 19th and 20th century, the highlights of the applied arts like porcelain, furniture and silver, and -last but not least- the exquisite collection of Asian art, displayed at the specially-built Asian pavilion.
In the Anne Frank House Museum Amsterdam you will get valuable advice on how to avoid the queus and make the most of your visit to this memorable hidingplace of Anne Frank. Discover the secret annexe behind the bookcase where Anne, the 13-year old Jewish girl and her family lived for 2 years, and where she wrote the now famous Anne Frank diaries. You will read about the daily life in the Achterhuis, about the people hiding, the famous Anne Frank Tree, the betrayal and subsequent deportation.
The Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam is of course another must see when you travel to The Netherlands. The guide gives a brief biography of Van Gogh and provides valuable background information on many paintings and drawings by Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries and predecessors. By reading about them beforehand you will be able to maximize your viewing experience.
The Hermitage Amsterdam is the only European satellite of the famous Hermitage in St Petersburg in Russia. Slightly off the beaten track, but also a must see when you visit Amsterdam. The museum is housed in a fascinating old building, Amstelhof, and stages excellent temporary exhibitions.

ROYSTONE NEVERSON A very easy to follow guide to the top museums in Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank house, the Van Gogh museum, and the Amsterdam Hermitage. The authors love their work. The guide is a work of that love. It shows in the choice of objects and the way they write about them. In the introduction to the Rijksmuseum, the author tells you that it guards a total of 1.1 million objects.Every section of the museum, the author tells you, is dedicated to a specific century and it is like a walk through history. The reader is made to feel that he is on a conducted tour of the museum, being informed by a guide who genuinely knows and loves what he or she is guiding you through. It is the same with the other museums. You are taken on conducted tours and in the end you feel enriched.

Duvernois This is a great illustrated, and curated, guide to the four most popular Amsterdam museums: the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank house, the Van Gogh museum, and the Amsterdam Hermitage. The guide takes you to the high points of the museums, with some images to guide the eye as well, but also hits on some lesser seen works. I have never been in the Hermitage Amsterdam, but the other guides remind me of what I have missed the first times through the museums. Will fix that this summer when I'm next in Amsterdam. The author has a genuine interest in the art and it shows clearly in the guide!I received a copy of the kindle book in exchange for a fair review.
