A sweet man with a writing problem marries an alcoholic with a handicapped son and struggles to understand why he is continually consigned to the back of the bus. The walk-in clinic can't fix broken hearts and writing becomes a kind of anaesthesia. Icebergs are melting in Antartica but a chill settles in Seattle. Care-taking is hell and then hoarding happens. Nobody can get to the kitchen as sit-down dinners become a thing of the past. The dishes are in the bathtub when trouble arrives in dynamite divisions. An ink-stained tsunami sweeps through ten years time and most of the players end up in a four-door tragicomedy until bittersweet dark chocolate ends it.

Review "I like that this book didn't feel stale or derivative of anything I've ever read before - in fact, I can't think  of anything I've ever read before that is remotely like it! It is a hefty read that covers a lot of territory, but does so with remarkable depth ... it is humorous, quirky, jaw-dropping, surprising, sad and inspiring."~ Laura Clarke"This is an excellent novel that captured my attention from the beginning, pulled me in, and never once let go. Each scene was riveting, imaginative, and flowed smoothly from one to the next ... never a dull part where you get bored or want to skip ahead."~ Jenna Brewer"Busy Foot Bingtoot and the Maladies by Tom Ruffles is hands down one of the most original and unique novels I've read in a long time. An unusual literary treat, to be certain."~ Annabella Johnson"Mr. Ruffles sets off the scene and characters in a skillful way that not only draws us right in, but creates great visualizations (like we are watching a mini-series on TV as all the events play out), and elicits a genuine emotional investment. Highly recommended."~ Brenda Maxwell "We are led to believe that this (book) is a lightly disguised version of the truth, but there is no way to know how much elaboration there has been.  There is a slipperiness here that cannot be pinned down, and that ambiguity makes it a fascinating read."~ Tom Ruffles, PHD,Honorary Visiting Research Fellow, Anglia Ruskin University - no relation to the author I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was excellently written (a few minor editing and formatting things but nothing too major) and kept my attention from the interesting opening to the bittersweet ending. It is not a quick read ... nor should it be. There are too many important themes here to gloss over (marriage, family relationships, addiction, disease ....) so the author takes his time in carefully developing the various storylines so that we the readers are thoroughly invested the whole way through. I liked Mr. Ruffles's writing style very much - it is part serious, part quirky and tongue-in-cheek and almost satirical. It is funny and sad. But overall just feels so real. I found myself completely lost in this world he created with these interesting, deep characters night after night. Was almost disappointed when I was done, but the ending gave the emotional satisfaction I look for in a good read (even if it was a bit sad). Well done. (4stars) ~ Karen Mathews I am most certainly glad I took the chance on Tom Ruffles' "Busy Foot Bingtoot"! This was a captivating novel and very impressive for a debut. There is such strong, vivid writing, and the characters are all fascinating, flawed, and going through their own transitions. GREAT character development, (even if the developing situation is rather sad) and everything just felt "authentic" for lack of a better word. Dialogue, interactions, scenes, descriptions...In some places the formatting is messed up (all left justified) and it could use some proofing. But all in all a very good read that I'd recommend even to those who don't normally read this sort of thing...try it, you'll be pleasantly surprised! (4 stars) ~ Claire Middleton "Reading this book is like admiring fine lace. While taking in the overall image, you start to recognize yourself, friends and family in the delicately threaded details. Ruffles has accomplished combining entertainment with self-awareness (and) the purest (form of) sympathy. I was instantly caught up in the story of a man coming to terms with not only his own limits in life, but his deep empathy with every flabbergasting person around him. That's a neat hat trick for man whose hat keeps moving (on) without him." ~ Cat Shannon "I have a feeling that this book and the characters and their fates will stay with me for some time. Creative, original, entertaining, yet delivers a message. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Ruffles in the future as he is truly a gifted storyteller AND writer (not necessarily the same thing...)." ~ Darla Ortiz

From the Author This book is an attempt to show that hardly anybody is a masters of the universe. That we all need help. That everybody is harboring deficits. Most of our problems aren't even visible. And since we can't see them, each of us lives in an odd, humorous, laughable, one-off world.

From the Inside Flap "In history, we talk about what happened. In art we talk about what might have happened. All encompassing love may not exist in real life, but art says it might exit. ~ Alexander Sokurov

Tom Ruffles is the endearing protagonist , trying desperately to find happiness in a household of wounded hearts and lost dreams. This story alternately touches your heart with its poignancy and makes you chuckle with the zany actions of it's characters, so skillfully depicted in a wry and witty style of writing. My favorite book of the year!
