It is 1910. Jessica and Phyllis Melville have grown up at Ellinghurst, their family estate. A headstrong beauty, Jessica longs for London - the glitter and glamor of debutante life - while bookish Phyllis dreams in vain of attending the university. Neither girl questions that it is Theo, their adored brother, whom their mother loves best. Theo eclipses everyone around him, including the diffident Oskar Grunewald, who is a frequent visitor to Ellinghurst.

Fascinated by the house but alternately tormented and ignored by the Melville children, Oskar seeks refuge in Ellinghurst's enormous library. Over the next decade, as the Great War devastates and reshapes their world, the sisters come of age in a country unrecognizable from the idylls of their youth. As they struggle to forge new paths in a world that no longer plays by the old rules, Oskar's life becomes entwined with theirs once again, in ways that will change all of their futures forever.

WWI and the British Aristocracy By AntKathy Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a preview copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.If you are a fan of the PBS series "Downton Abbey", you will enjoy Clare Clark's WE THAT ARE LEFT. The book takes place in England during the era of the Great War. Aubrey Melville is a baron, with a son, Theo, and two daughters, Phyllis and Jessica. He and his cold-fish wife Eleanor maintain a strained relationship. Also living at the family estate of Ellinghurst are Oscar Greenwood and his mother. The heir to the title and estate, Theo, signs up for duty with the British military, while his sisters beg their parents to let them be useful. Eventually, bookish Phyllis volunteers to work in a London hospital for veterans, and party girl Jessica heads to London for a job in publishing, both challenging the roles set for young ladies of the aristocracy. Oscar, the youngest of the household, and his mother leave the estate while he finishes school and trains for the army. But, as is the case with so many grand estates and aristocratic families during WWI, society changes. An entire generation of eligible young men are lost to the war or the flu. There are no workers left to run the estates, and many titles are lost when heirs are killed in action.Because of his age, Oscar is not called up for enlistment, and instead lands a place at Cambridge studying Physics. He is a mathematical and science prodigy, challenged by the advancements in the fields being made by great contemporary minds like Einstein. Much of the book discusses both mathematics and science, which is a little daunting, but nonetheless interesting, even to someone who doesn't care for these fields.I would rate the book higher, because it is well-written, interesting and full of surprises. However, so much of it is similar to "Downton Abbey", it is not an entirely original story. It does, however, reflect the changes and values of the time, which greatly affect current and future generations. Worth reading, especially if you are fond of this period in history, and the effects of the Great War on Britain and the aristocracy.

So laments Jessica Melville, looking into her mirror in 1919. She has finally got her wish, broken free of her family's battlemented estate in Hampshire, and come up to London as a bachelor girl, only to find herself attending balls where all the men seem to have either training wheels or retreads. Phyllis, her bookish elder sister, has no interest in the marriage market. She left home at the first opportunity to volunteer in a hospital for the war-wounded, and is now off in Egypt working on Howard Carter's search for the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamen. The changes that the Great War brought to the lives of women is one of the chief themes of Clare Clark's absorbing period romance. But it is not the only one. Another character, Oscar Greenwood (who bears much the same relationship to Phyllis and Jessica as Robbie Turner does to the two sisters in Ian McEwan's ATONEMENT), goes up to Cambridge to read Physics. It is a heady time, dominated by Rutherford's experiments with the atom, the dawn of quantum mechanics, and the impact of Einstein's theories of Relativity. I found these chapters among the most interesting in the book, as Clark's picture of Cambridge is so accurate, and happens to focus on my own college, Trinity. My father, also a scientist, would have been Oscar's exact contemporary in 1919. Clark is also good with other topics of the period -- spiritualism, the suffrage movement, jazz, drugs, and the club scene -- though my interest in these was less personal.I wasn't sure that I would enjoy the book at first. The prologue, set at a funeral in 1920, was downright confusing, with eight proper names on the first page alone, three more on the next page, and a further eight at the start of the next chapter. It is quite impossible to work out who they all were, or how they related to one another. I now realize that this was deliberate; the questions of who dies and who will end up with whom will reverberate throughout the book, and will not be resolved until the very end. Once past the first two chapters, though, I found the pace rapidly accelerating, so that even 450 pages came to seem short. Reading the book as a historical romance from a specialist in the genre (each of Clark's novels explores a different period), I succumbed without resistance, and was coming close to a five-star rating. In the end, though, I am settling for four stars, but a solid four. Part of the reason is that the resolution of the romance involves a last-minute surprise revelation that I think is inadequately prepared, and gives rise to some morally uncomfortable moments that may shock many readers. Another, when it comes down to it, is that for all Clare Clark's brilliance at recreating the period, the development and outcome of the plot are not as closely tied in with the time as they might be. But it is still an interesting couple of years looked at in some depth, and an absorbing story, no matter what the period.

The writing is lovely, the prose lyrical and the descriptive text throughout is well done. The characters, however, are a different story. Not exactly unlikable, just I guess unremarkable. Unremarkable in that no one here stands out. I have to feel something for at least the main characters, like, dislike, or at least a mild interest. I couldn't work that up, and therefore the book never really held my interest. I continued slogging through for quite a well, but stopped reading altogether when I realized it was a chore, not a pleasure. Life is to short for that, my friend.

The union between the story Herculaneum and our shared connection to loss and suffering, and the chaos that accompanies the two, for me made these poems transition between a sort of detached ancient familiarity and modern alienation (which is all too often familiar as well). Haunting and lovely at the same time. But there are these wonderful moments of sweetness and beauty as well, something shared but also quite special: experience that we know is unique to a time and moment, but something we all intuitively understand. I loved it. Highly recommend. I’m eager to read more.

Great for people like me who don't have time to sit and read a novel. If in my childhood I had been asked to give the name of an Irish poem, I should certainly have said "Let Erin remember the days of old," or "Rich and rare were the gems she wore"; for although among the ornamental books that lay on the round drawingroom table, the only one of Moore's was Lalla Rookh, some guest would now and then sing one of his melodies at the piano; and I can remember vexing or trying to vex my governess by triumphant mention of Malachi's collar of gold,

The Kiltartan Poetry Book By Serenade Lady Gregory has long stayed on my mind since my first introduction while a young college student in the 1960's. Beautiful, clear and pure, conveys the deepest desperation of lost love and broken promises in simple, heartfelt anguish. There is no greater expression of loss and suffering than written by the Irish Pen. Lady Augusta Gregory makes that stated fact a reality. If you desire to see inside the soul, an explanation of true love. beauty, and the pain of loss, you will find it expressed no finer than in Gregory's writings.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Isia's Secret By B. Maria The book is basically a contemporary spy thriller, a genre that I quite like. Enda Osin is a columnist at Herald, a newspaper in London who’s just been demoted because he tends to be blunt in his reports, something that the powers to be don’t care for, not when they’re usually end up getting exposed for whey really are.So now Enda gets a very simple assignment and a new female partner, Jessica Du Rosse, a beautiful a West Indian woman who is literally half his own age, to write only positive things about a Greek tycoon, Paul Hrisacopolis and his charitable activities, which include his latest project, bringing back the Elgin Marbles to Athens. However as luck would have it, Enda and Jessica discover dark secrets about the Greek millionaire, who is not all that charitable as he seems to be. In fact he is a greedy, corrupt and power driven industrialist who is not shy away from giving orders to kill anyone who gets in the way. And of course Enda and Jessica soon will find themselves in the middle of all this – doing exactly what the tycoon doesn’t want them to do: getting in the way and discovering stuff that should better be hidden away. The story takes us from Cyprus to Greece, to England, Turkey and other parts of Europe, giving us a very visual and well done description of the places encountered. I loved reading the descriptions of places, especially Cyprus, and I even found myself recognizing some of the locations within the island that the author was talking about. The theme is a modern espionage story, and while, of course, in real life the fate of Cyprus doesn’t rest in the hands of a single person, no matter how wealthy and corrupt he is, I did find myself immerse in the story and buying it all up.The whole political climate is very well depicted by the author, and since I’ve been living here from before we joined the EU, it brought back very strong and controversial memories in me, especially since today many Cypriots are actually longing for the old days from before the Kourema, of being independent, having their own very strong currency, CYP (Cyprus pound), which at the time was even strong than the British GBP pound, and being considered one of the wealthiest nation in Europe – which they indeed were.I have also reviewed the book on my blog at mysterysequels.com

Ray Stone's second novel - Isia's Secret By Enos russell Ray Stone has given us a modern struggle for power in the Eastern Mediterranean set in the political background of the European Union. His protagonist for the series of mystery thrillers is Enda Osin, an unforgettable and controversial writer for the world famous Herald. Forced to lower his profile, his boss assigns him to write a series of back page articles about billionaire Paul Hrisacopolis, a power driven shipping magnate and a strong supporter in the movement for securing the political union of Greece and Cyprus for Cyprus. Enda is soon entangled in the dark and secret Hrisacopolis family mystery. We are fortunate that the author completes this almost incomplete hero with what I hope will be his long-time partner, a beautiful and sophisticated a West Indian woman half his age, Jessica Du Rosse. In spite of their Editor forcing them to work together writing inane, non-controversial pieces about billionaire Hrisacopolis, Enda and Jessica quickly find themselves immersed in murder and intrigue with a long, surprising history of deceit and revenge. Together they must survive deadly danger, a murderous conspiracy and a political catastrophe. The author constructs several memorable characters that endure his plot twists, and surprises. His descriptions of venue and artifact are authentic renderings that pull the reader into the story and support each character's journey to the climatic ending.I am looking forward to reading the rest of Ray Stone's series with Enda Osin.E L Russell, Ph.D.

Isia's Secret winds up the tension By Suraya `Isia's Secret' is Raymond Stone's second novel. This is an author who is developing his craft with each novel he puts out. In Isia's Secret he takes the reader to a new level of enjoyment. Set with the Mediterranean in the background he took me down dark alleys where I witnessed shady deals. He builds tension, crafts his story line and leaves me wanting to know more as the story unfolds. As some background; Isia has a secret which could bring down a powerful Greek shipping magnate, Paul Hriscopalis. If this secret comes out his ambition to be elected to the EU and influence decisions over Cyprus will be thwarted. It all comes to a head on a cruise from London to Cyprus on the pretext of returning the Elgin Marbles. Enda, banished from writing hard news defies his editor when he begins unravelling the mystery instead of writing the politically neutral story of the return of the Elgin Marbles. The stories behind Isia's death, the inauthentic grandson who stands to inherit Hriscopalis' empire and the haunting story of his own parent's death drive investigative journalist Enda aided by researcher Jessica come together in a massive explosion aboard Hriscopalis' cruise ship.Great story. A lot of fun. Plenty of pace. I look forward to Raymond's next novel.I recommend it.Suraya Dewing,CEOThe Story Mint.

"from an empty heart" is a series of short poems, each less than a page, except the one that isn't. All profits go to Mantis Society's Educational Charity. It is not a novel. It has no cohesive plot. It is fickle meandering through the soul. One may like one poem and hate six others, and vice versa. This is a volume of poems and passages written between 1987 and 2008. They encompass much pain and resolution. Many are my feelings, some are my interpretations of others feelings of separation, loss and anxiety. May they aid in your dealings with what life throws at you.

From an Empty Heart book review By Joan Bellings I first read From an Empty Heart back in November of 2011His Eminence , Mantis is a facebook friend and this is Mantis's first book which is a volume of poems and passages written between 1987 and 2008.Somethings just fill your heart without even trying. From An Empty Heart deals with poems and passages with titles such as Goodbye, Arrogance, Alone, Stars, Moonlight & Darkness yet it fills my heart.Moonlight is my favorite," I see you standing in the moonlight, Night's air cooling our desire.Your eyes sparkle from within, Drawing me into your soul." That is just a taste of the passion not the complete poem.

Romance Fan or Not, Well Worth the Read By Colby While not normally a romance novel fan, this book was witty and charming, and kept me comfortably reading from start to finish. The humor was sharp, but playful, and the romance aspect was engaging and broke the stereotypes often enough to keep the usual cliches from setting in. Additionally, this book was clean enough that I'd be quite comfortable letting my younger daughter read it. Nicely done, and my wife and I will keep our eyes out for the next one.

Rebecca Connolly shows promise as a new author. I say that because I wanted to finish the book and by the end, I felt I cared about the characters. There were a few things that were disappointing. First since this was supposed to be clean fiction AND historical fiction, I was uncomfortable with the male and female characters settling right into traveling unchaperoned together, posing as a married couple, and sleeping together on the same bed at one point, though it was sexless. I am no historian, but I've read enough Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, to understand that those actions would be considered immoral in and of themselves, so most characters would not be so casual about it, unless they were already debauched. So on the whole although the book had nothing immoral in it by 21st century standards, it felt anachronistic for the 19th century. As far as anachronisms go, I could have forgiven a Coca Cola bottle before all the above. Maybe the author would be more comfortable writing clean romance fiction in a contemporary setting.

The Slavonic Federation's secret service persuades a geneticist to access the brain of a visiting American financial wizard at the head of a trade delegation. The geneticist, who is seeking funds for research to improve human mental capacity, is unaware that he is involved in a bizarre plot to topple his country's government. The plot goes badly awry and leads to the collapse of the global economy and a descent into anarchy. Years later, when the world has reverted to a kind of neo-fascist politically correct normality, a Danish billionaire is persuaded to fund research by the same geneticist into the genomic source of intelligence with a view to creating a superior strain of homo sapiens. However, the billionaire is more interested in creating an intellectual elite with himself at its apex. Things don't turn out exactly as planned, and a contest ensues for control of his industrial empire against a background of government corruption and a media culture that has given 'spin' a new meaning.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyed.. By Bernie I quote from a review written by John Porter, PhD:Enjoyed ... the re-interpretations of what had already been given, such as the newspaper versions and the returns to the Flakfortet business. There's a consistently confident attitude to the language and the authorial position. It's also very funny at times. The political cynicism (nihilism? both OK by me!) continually undermines the positions of the characters and provides the underlying theme. Which I guess is a comic one (in the best sense) and one that escapes being mere satire.... I think it's quite brilliant. Not an easy read by any means. You could understand a reader getting frustrated. Almost anyone is going to have queries about some of the information (computing, science, banking etc), but then again, it's fiction and sufficiently convincing, and then again it's a post-modern sort of fiction and unease is a condition of the game, and as long as you can put up with being pushed and pulled all over the place, then there's a pleasure at being lost in the maze.

This book was exactly what I needed to gauge his knowledge for the geography bee. I really like how this book uses pictures rather than a bunch of words to keep kids engaged. Most other books that I found in the kindle store just have a bunch of words dumped onto a page. We don't even know where to begin with those. Overall, great book! Really recommend it to people looking to learn some basic trivia.

Air Transmigra: Revised and Expanded Edition, by John Norton

Review Loss is never far from the surface in the world that John Norton starkly observes in Air Transmigra: There's a lot of unhappiness in this business/of trolling for disorganized messages. Time has taken its toll and any turning back is in a nostalgia-free zone, illusion-less and clear as a New England winter day, but seen from a trans-continental distance. Or the distance a painting puts us from its subject. Or the pain that living without illusion makes liminal. --Alan Bernheimer, author of The Spoonlight InstituteJohn Norton's Air Transmigra is about the dangers and pleasures of traveling and much else besides: about the emptiness and lovelessness of life under capitalism, about the unresolved difficulties of relationships with family, about the anxious question of our dependence on the machines that seem more and more to dominate our lives, about the fate of the planet in catastrophic times. If this seems a grim catalog, that would be misleading: this poetry is witty and ironic: God helps the weak/ the powerful create monuments/ to ensure salvation. And in a poem called Meditation Norton imagines draining a reservoir behind a dam when the Buddhist handbooks teach Empty the mind.... In Air Trans-migra we seem to be on board a plane the destination of which is Hell. Finally, this poetry regards life with compassion as in the closing lines of Rules of the Road: All praise to the holy ones traversing the great basin / Santa Monica San Diego Santa Ana/ San Gabriel San Bernardino/ los santos y los muertos/ intercedar por nosotros This is about the famous infrastructure of California and the migrating peasants upon whose backs we have built a massive economy. the road is 101/ the reality/ Interstate Camino Real, pronounced real as it was in the play by Tennessee Williams. The Real Road. --Beverly Dahlen, author of A Reading

About the Author John Norton moved to San Francisco in 1974 and soon afterwards joined the Saturday Writing Workshop at Small Press Traffic. His poetry and fiction began to appear in small magazines and literary journals. A previous book of prose poems and sketches won an American Book Award. He's served on the boards of Small Press Traffic and the Irish Arts Foundation, and for many years helped organize the Irish-American Crossroads Festival. He works as a technical writer and editor in Silicon Valley.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Burnt Norton? Norton Anthology? A Bit of Both. By Kevin Killian Norton is one of the original writers of the New Narrative, at least the branch of it that opened in Bob Gluck's writing workshops, given for free courtesy of the California Arts Council, in the 1970s and 1980s. He was already then a practicing poet, one who worked as a teen boy with poet Jack Spicer as a page at the Boston Public Library.Like Spicer he is fascinated by media and mediation, and his experiences manuevering through the phenomological system make up some of his most interesting poems. His new collection, AIR TRANSMIGRA, is just out from the admirable San Francisco artist-run press Ithuriel's Spear. I admire Norton's poetic stance, and in his best work he is a remarkable writer, as adept at bringing to the foreground the romantic yes and no's among lovers, as he is showing the political and social dimension behind every human choice, ethical, poetic or otherwise. He is among our chief poets of work, the daily grind in which capitalism maintains complete control for forty hours a week and even when we think we're "off the clock." The opening section of "Air Transmigra" is called "Rules of the Road" and is made up of a solid suite of positions, a jeremiad breaking like waves into individual seacaps of passion and outrage (and analysis). "Black street lights positioned like/ upended quarter notes/ stacks of green and red containers/ tankers full of Coke/ heaps of disassembled dream/ shredded to resupply Toyota."At the other end of the book a different register of "brand names" takes center stage, and these are the painters and other artists whom Norton invokes in a group of ecphrastic poems inspired by artworks: "The Skater" of Gilbert Stuart, Jan Steen's "Marriage at Cana," et cetera. Like Jack Spicer, Norton names a poem after the Cezanne masterwork "The Card Players," but Norton is more precise and narrative than Spicer, for his focus is different. In her blurb Beverly Dahlen gets the matter of Norton exactly right: if his themes seem grim, "this would be misleading: this poetry is witty and ironic." Norton won the American Book Award for his first book of poetry, and if they have a rule against repeats, it might be time to break it.

When pioneers first came to the territory now known as Wewahitchka, they were welcomed by Native Americans, but the natives resistance grew when their land and hunting grounds were threatened. As a result of this turmoil, many lives were lost. Gen. Andrew Jackson made three trips to the Florida Territory. One such visit brought him to the Wewa-Iola area, where he took advantage of the interpretation skills of the pioneering George Richards and his family. Thomas Richards later served as an Indian Agent, and along with his brother Andrew and several others, they built a fort on the banks of the Dead Lakes. In 1872, Dr. John Keyes moved to the Wewa area and planted pecan, pear, and orange trees. Dr. Keyes referred to the two lakes as Alice and Julia after his two daughters. Around 1875, residents decided to call the town Wewahitchka, meaning water eyes, in honor of the lakes in the center of the settlement.

Wewahitchka - A Great Read By Samatha Having lived in Wewahitchka (commonly called Wewa) for 8 years I found this book to be a true and very apt description of the town and its people. Many of the people I knew personally and they were brought to life in this accurate account of the town and its inhabitants.
