Air Transmigra: Revised and Expanded Edition, by John Norton

Review Loss is never far from the surface in the world that John Norton starkly observes in Air Transmigra: There's a lot of unhappiness in this business/of trolling for disorganized messages. Time has taken its toll and any turning back is in a nostalgia-free zone, illusion-less and clear as a New England winter day, but seen from a trans-continental distance. Or the distance a painting puts us from its subject. Or the pain that living without illusion makes liminal. --Alan Bernheimer, author of The Spoonlight InstituteJohn Norton's Air Transmigra is about the dangers and pleasures of traveling and much else besides: about the emptiness and lovelessness of life under capitalism, about the unresolved difficulties of relationships with family, about the anxious question of our dependence on the machines that seem more and more to dominate our lives, about the fate of the planet in catastrophic times. If this seems a grim catalog, that would be misleading: this poetry is witty and ironic: God helps the weak/ the powerful create monuments/ to ensure salvation. And in a poem called Meditation Norton imagines draining a reservoir behind a dam when the Buddhist handbooks teach Empty the mind.... In Air Trans-migra we seem to be on board a plane the destination of which is Hell. Finally, this poetry regards life with compassion as in the closing lines of Rules of the Road: All praise to the holy ones traversing the great basin / Santa Monica San Diego Santa Ana/ San Gabriel San Bernardino/ los santos y los muertos/ intercedar por nosotros This is about the famous infrastructure of California and the migrating peasants upon whose backs we have built a massive economy. the road is 101/ the reality/ Interstate Camino Real, pronounced real as it was in the play by Tennessee Williams. The Real Road. --Beverly Dahlen, author of A Reading

By Kevin Killian Norton is one of the original writers of the New Narrative, at least the branch of it that opened in Bob Gluck's writing workshops, given for free courtesy of the California Arts Council, in the 1970s and 1980s. He was already then a practicing poet, one who worked as a teen boy with poet Jack Spicer as a page at the Boston Public Library.Like Spicer he is fascinated by media and mediation, and his experiences manuevering through the phenomological system make up some of his most interesting poems. His new collection, AIR TRANSMIGRA, is just out from the admirable San Francisco artist-run press Ithuriel's Spear. I admire Norton's poetic stance, and in his best work he is a remarkable writer, as adept at bringing to the foreground the romantic yes and no's among lovers, as he is showing the political and social dimension behind every human choice, ethical, poetic or otherwise. He is among our chief poets of work, the daily grind in which capitalism maintains complete control for forty hours a week and even when we think we're "off the clock." The opening section of "Air Transmigra" is called "Rules of the Road" and is made up of a solid suite of positions, a jeremiad breaking like waves into individual seacaps of passion and outrage (and analysis). "Black street lights positioned like/ upended quarter notes/ stacks of green and red containers/ tankers full of Coke/ heaps of disassembled dream/ shredded to resupply Toyota."At the other end of the book a different register of "brand names" takes center stage, and these are the painters and other artists whom Norton invokes in a group of ecphrastic poems inspired by artworks: "The Skater" of Gilbert Stuart, Jan Steen's "Marriage at Cana," et cetera. Like Jack Spicer, Norton names a poem after the Cezanne masterwork "The Card Players," but Norton is more precise and narrative than Spicer, for his focus is different. In her blurb Beverly Dahlen gets the matter of Norton exactly right: if his themes seem grim, "this would be misleading: this poetry is witty and ironic." Norton won the American Book Award for his first book of poetry, and if they have a rule against repeats, it might be time to break it.
