"Everyone talking over each other-radios tuned to different stations." There are no bows in this collection. Lauren Gilmore gives readers poems that grapple with life's loose ends. Outdancing the Universe is for those who "have always slept best between mile markers." She chronicles how illusory "home" can often be, and the quiet frustration that comes from seeking it. Gilmore welcomes you to the human race-"the only species masochistic enough / to keep track of time."

By Literary Classics Book Reviews Outdancing the Universe is a lucent compilation of free verse poetry which is highly deserving of praise. Even more so, when one learns it was penned by a teenage girl. Elements of contrasting light and darkness are poignantly depicted in this raw glimpse into the soul of a young woman along with those whose lives have etched their mark upon her very being. Poet Lauren Gilmore is genuine, eloquent, and insightful as she paints vivid pictures through the written word in this chiaroscuro of human strength and frailty. We look forward to reading more work by this talented young writer who has certainly left an impression upon the world of poetry. Outdancing the Universe is highly recommended and has earned the Literary Classics Seal of Approval.

An old soul in a young body By Chris Fawcett I had the pleasure of having breakfast with the author this morning, and afterwards browsed the signed copy she left for our B&B host. There is a great, rich treasure hidden in this thin tome, and the artwork complements the poetry beautifully. I was particularly drawn to the first line in the first offering: "He doesn't have a record player anymore, but needs the boxes of vinyls from our basement anyway." Wow. How did she find out about those boxes of old albums in _my_ basement??

From the Back Cover Relationships are hard but worth the work you put in to keep them lasting when it's right. Domestic violence plagues many who are in relationships and it often has lasting repercussions on children, which is never a good thing, yet domestic violence happens and it's up to you to change directions. This is a collection of poems/prose depicting the struggles we endure on this journey through relationships, some good, some bad, but none erasing the hope...

About the Author Connie Jordan, author of “The World, Through a Poet's Eyes,” now releasing this second book of poems designed to show the internal damage done through domestic violence. We all struggle with obstacles in our lives. Sometimes they weigh us down, but the key is to always land on a positive space in the aftermath of these occurrences, to begin the journey forward on that positive, for the present is only temporary, the past gives you an edge, in review, yet it resides behind us, but the future is a continuum of our day-to-day existence; let's face it with understanding in what took us to this crisis.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Heartfelt and hugely courageous! By David Russell David RussellConnie’s work, as a whole, makes a fusion of the personal and political, with total courage. This theme is set with the opener, A Real Look at Bullying which adds the extra dimension of concern for innocent children whose future is held in callous disregard by those in power at all levels. Attitudes Reflected is properly critical of the uncritical masses, naively accepting the stereotypes imposed on them by their oppressors. In her attitude to personal relationships, Connie is fiercely individualistic: “I ascend and leave behind the negativity you endorsed in the course of our entwinement.” In poems such a Determined to Arrive, there is a strong element of self-determination and self-discipline. Everlasting Love and Forty Years Later venerate enduring relationships in a callous world opposed to them in so many ways. Forward Motion gives a cosmic background to the struggles of humanity. Going Into the 21st Century Grateful relates those feelings to a benign, elemental God. Hands that Hurt confronts the issue of domestic violence. Hidden Inside proclaims the true courage of compassion, while Hindsight indicts hypocrisy and deception. How Are You Living – a Christian guide to self-direction and self-discipline. Humankind – Be Both: emphatically true – be human, and be kind. I Remember When expresses a certain degree of nostalgia for a past in which there seemed to be far greater integrity and optimism. This may be illusory – looking at the past through rose-tinted glasses – but not necessarily so, as mercenary brutality and cheap hedonism seem painfully rampant, with accelerating intensity. If I Died Tomorrow – the spirit of love should transcend earthly mortality. Illusions is about being oneself, not accepting the illusory images imposed by a blind and arbitrary society. Is This Love and Jealousy show the best of ideals and intentions going bad. Loss of Innocence shows the double-edged nature of leaving the shelter of parental control to be buffeted by the real world. People appeals against egotism, for altruism; this is an uphill struggle: “to see the beauty disguised amongst the ugly in our lives.” Proverbs 4:7 shows Connie to be a committed Christian, but not an uncritical one: one must avoid snap judgements, take time and care in assessing, and relating to, others’ characters. The Meaning of Rainbows is a charming paraphrase of the legend of Noah’s Ark. Reason plots the complex relationships between the limitations of reason and the superseding of reason by blind faith. Rebirth – invigoration and rejuvenation via a vital new relationship. Reflections on Why I Stayed – much effort and self-sacrifice was devoted to a worldly partner, to reach the final realisation that true bonding must be heavenly, come from above. Remembering – flashback to euphoric times of younger love. Serenity Prayer strikes a balance between stoicism and optimism: “the best that you can do is accept what is and change what can be changed”. There is the additional bonus of a few perceptive people who can see through the facades of deceit. Spring is a straightforward celebration of that invigorating, rejuvenating season. Summer Time – the Intro seems to retract from spring’s optimism, but ebullience returns in the poem itself. Sunrise is superlatively affirmative: one should always have the tenacity to persevere to the next day, and fuse reverie with reality: “Hold on to your dreams and see what the new day brings,Sex With a Mission describes an extended casual encounter, with powerful chemistry but no underlying substance. The couple quickly tired of each other, and a year later her partner died of AIDS. Just before his departure, he revealed in a letter that they had had an encounter 5 years previously, and said that he had introduced her to the worlds of AIDS – barbed incident indeed! She says at the end that this was fiction – a fiction which in no way detracts from its validity as a cautionary tale. Sleep – happy, comforting slumbers of a couple at ease with each other. Soon is a reproach to a possible partner who made empty innuendos that he would be making approaches involving commitment. She was disappointed, and speaks strongly against hypocrisy. Proposal, by way of contrast, celebrates fiery euphoria which culminated in commitment. Fine nuance here, where she felt reluctant to make the proposal because that would expose her vulnerability. The Ride of a Lifetime concerns being ‘on wings of love’; very sound metaphor of weathering heavy storms in the amorous stratosphere, and proving durability. Violence in the Home – an all-too-common scenario of a relationship, warm, vital and loving, which goes bad. The situation is even more tragic because she had known of his violent past, and felt she could reform him. Waiting for Prince Charming is the testimony of someone who had ideals, then suffered the bitterest experience, then accepted the value of reverie for its own sake, not really wishing it to ‘come true’: “I have decided to go solitary, while leaving the door open for any possibilities, that will lead me to, My prince charming.”The Bad News Knock is the most articulated statement in this collection, depicting the desolation felt about a loved one killed in a war. The grief is intuitively attuned to the intensity of the conflict in which the tragedy took place, and of the ferocity of the elements which seem to run in parallel to human conflict. The Game – life is indeed a complex game but, mercifully, different people play it by different rules; the rules of deceit tend to predominate; but some honest voices speak up, to leave visible beacons of hope. The Lines That Inhibit are boundary lines, drawn by bureaucracy, and prejudice, to define and govern humanity; they can be as oppressive as they are helpful.Winning, the concluding poem, is another self-direction, self-discipline tract, an utterly valid appeal to ‘stay grounded’.

I liked this short collection of prose poetry By Lazarian Wordsmith I liked this short collection of prose poetry, because like good wine, on each welcomed page, each new thought or message presented to me: I could savour the taste of Connie's writing. Indeed maybe even her life.I loved the background of serenity each page background suggested to my mind: even those pages with writing that challenged my thinking. This book, and it's prose can not be scanned. It is to be savoured, tasted, breathed over and then inhaled deep into your consciousness, where, if you are a poet like me, similar thoughts and experiences hide. Hide? Yes hide, because sometimes we keep feelings, and experiences locked away. This book presents the reader with a key to thoughts, experiences, and in some way childhood, adolescence and adulthood.I always thought that only fantasy fairy treasure hid at the end of the rainbow. This collection presents that treasure on almost every page.Imbibe well and enjoy the writing as I did.Thank you Connie for the freshness you gave with real stimulating prose poetry.

Turfa This collection of prose poetry spans the life of a thoughtful, caring, and faithful person who record both good and bad in her life. She refuses to fall prey to the hate and bad feelings around her. Several poems stand out to me: “Forty Years After” ”How Are You Living”, and “I Remember When”. The latter especially make the point that not everything that has happened over the last few decades has been progress. Although the poems read quickly, they are thought-provoking and will give readers reason to ponder for themselves. :

Engaging Colorado mystery By Kindle Customer Thomas Mack Stedman, a big city Denver lawyer, goes through a messy divorce, gives up the big city and his law practice to become a rural Colorado Sheriff. He responds to a murder scene only to find that one of the victims is his ex lover. Investigators find his love letters and he becomes a suspect. Because the District Attorney doesn't like him, he is arrested for both murders. How he proves himself innocent is a worthwhile mystery. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a fine blending of both By William B. Pratt Bloody Mary Confession, by Jack EricksonIs this novel a romance or a mystery? Definitely, a fine blending of both. I would give the romance a five star and the mystery a four star. The romance between Max and Amanda begins at a North Dakota State University party. It is held on a cold night in a stable yard with the pungent smell of horse manure and smoke from a blazing bonfire mixing with music, laughter and dance. The young couple collide like “two planets speeding toward each other.” She, a drama major and he, an excelling student and baseball star, engage in delightfully philosophical banter about the animal instincts and drama that drive the game of baseball. Their conversation ends with a script that will define their lives ahead. “A few seconds is all it takes to change the game. Like life…a few seconds can change everything.”Their delicious romance leads to marriage and their careers excel. Max becomes the All Star second baseman for the Boston Red Sox. Amanda soars as an actress and film star. The marriage and romance sour as the two careers skyrocket leading them to live on the two coasts, separated. Erickson does an excellent job of character development as he introduces the influences, positive and negative, that play out the demise of the couple and the murder mystery. He includes pithy wisdom in lines that could well apply to most of the readers of this tale. He inserts the wisdom, “selfishness kills more marriages than infidelity,” and “neither of us wants to give up the careers we’ve built,” thus, many marriages become “minefields of unspoken emotions.”Read it for the Romance and the Mystery!

Max makes it big in professional baseball as an all star second baseman with the storied Boston Red Sox. Amanda becomes a star of romantic comedy films in Hollywood. Growing success pulls them apart and they divorce. Late bloomer Debra Marcum, who introduced Max and Amanda in college, re-emerges to comfort Max and more. Following retirement from major league baseball Max embarks on a second career in law enforcement. Max is torn when the LAPD asks for his help investigating the suspicious death of Amanda's new boyfriend, movie director Damiano Sartor. He doesn't want his role in the investigation to jeopardize his budding relationship with Debra. What follows is an unexpected revelation but one that reveals the fundamental humanity of those involved.

Anyone who has had an intense relationship will relate to the intimate conversations between Amanda and Max. Jack Erickson beautifully captured the dynamics between two good people who love each other but want utterly different things. The characters seemed so real that I truly felt like I knew them personally.Once again, Jack Erickson has managed to take his reader on an exciting ride all the way to an unexpected, jaw-dropping ending. I definitely recommend this book!

It was well written and the word choices spoke volumes to me. The author pulls you into each poem. My favorite poem is The Gathering b/c I am a Wicca and this sounds like so many of my gatherings and just how my internal thoughts go when I decide who I will reveal myself to and who would not be able to handle it. Loved the book! If you like more modern poetry you will love this book!

We are Utah locals, but we bought this to find new places to eat, hike, drive, and explore, and this book did not disappoint. The book does a pretty good job of being thorough. We'd recommend this book for travelers and for locals.

Perfect trip planner By Sabrina Planning a Girl Scout trip with 18 teenage girls is always a challenge but this book has helped make that task a little easier! It's very easy to read and being sectioned off by main areas of interest and things to do in the surrounding area is amazing! I love that each chapter includes maps, price ranges, and places to eat, stay and play. One this I wish it had more of was images for some of the places they recommend for visual people like myself. A great tour guide and I can't wait to take with me this summer!

Of the poems in A Communion of Saints, Editor Anna Evans (Barefoot Muse and The Raintown Review) has observed: "Culleton gives free rein to his lively imagination and mischievous sense of humor... But although the poems are often wildly funny, they usually serve to elucidate some nugget of philosophy or spiritual angst, and many resonate with an almost unearthly beauty..."

Culleton is one of the best formalist poets I've read, but he's not constrained by form. Form seems to liberate his imagination in a way that free verse rarely does for other poets. Despite the raucous humor throughout, these are also tragic poems -- loneliness and angst run through all of them. The mode is Magic-Realist. Great read from cover to cover.

Jada Tan Rufo is a former English as a Second Language teacher who spent fourteen years teaching in China, mainly in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Hainan, and Shaanxi Provinces. Jada moderates TEFLChina for YahooGroups, one of the largest ESL support online sites. She stays informed about current events in China and works and lives in Hawaii.

It's not easy being an Asian American in China, where residents of big cities believe that Asians, including those born and raised in English-speaking countries, are not qualified to teach English. In a country of 1.3 billion people where studying English is as popular as having the latest electronic gadget, this can be a huge problem. Author Jada Tan Rufo, descended from a Chinese immigrant who took a Filipino name when he came to the United States, takes up the challenge to teach in the country of her ancestors.

Her detailed memoir Banana Girl takes readers on a journey throughout China, describing the lows-such as working for a corrupt and inept boss- to the highs, the time she spends with her eager young students and the chance to travel inside the beautiful country. The vast nation incorporates 55 recognized minorities in addition to the Han majority, each with its own language and identity. During her free time, Jada explores China's wonders, walking along the Great Wall, visiting the Olympic Stadium in Beijing and riding camels in Inner Mongolia.

It is her work with her students, however, that will define Jada's experience. Although she may be a cultural banana, falling into the Asian American way of thinking of herself as looking yellow on the outside and white on the inside, Jada leaves an indelible impression on the students and fellow teachers whose lives intersected with hers. In Banana Girl, she freely shares the frustration, joy and laughter experienced during her time in China.

Wild Ruins: The Explorer's Guide to Britain Lost Castles, Follies, Relics and Remains, by Dave Hamilton

From the Author Wild Ruins was my most ambitious project to date. As you may imagine, researching and visiting so many ruins was no easy task! However after many, many early mornings, leading into late nights, travelling thousands of miles and over-coming my innate lack of organisation I pulled it off-I wrote the book I have always wanted to and I had a real blast on the way.   It is rare for an author (especially and English one) to say he is proud of his work but I am proud of this book. If you are visiting anywhere in Britain I would strongly recommend Wild Ruins in your backpack or suitcase. You are just one click away from a real adventure.

Best PDF Ebook Online Lightning Strikes, Love Ignites "Poetry, Prayers, Thoughts & Promise" (One Book 2), by David Boggs

This poetry book represents the ending of a journey, which began with my first poetry book, entitled “Crossroads of Seasons” and begins another journey with a new outlook guided by the hand of hope and restoration, which is brought about by the encouragement and remembrance of the love, peace and joy, which is found in knowing Jesus Christ, as your personal Savior, while capturing journey's and observations of the Christian life. This diverse, thoughtfully written array of poetry carefully expresses, the love of God, of country, of family, as well as expressing the love, needs and celebrations of mankind in general. This eclectic collection portrays thought provoking ideals, life’s difficulties, both externally and internally, heart warming peace, as well as trying to capture the ever illusive purpose and true meaning, which we all strive for in life. All the while, creatively illustrating, sustaining, strong reverence in God through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. In doing so, I have poetically integrated common realities combined with thoughts, prayers, circumstances and sometimes poignant expresions of life.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been writing poetry. Writing is my passion…whether it’s writing poetry, fiction, memoirs, or teaching writing, it is what I love to do. I especially love combining the beauty of words and pictures where one form complements the other. A few years ago I began posting my poetry on-line, and that has expanded to a growing Facebook group of talented writers and artists resulting in many fans and followers. At the encouragement of my family, many friends, supporters and fans, I finally decided to publish my poetry. It is my hope that my words will not only inspire you, but help bring a positive change in your life. One cannot underestimate the power of words spoken from the heart.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Great Poetry Book! By MrPoetic19 Michelle I. Leonard published her 1st book of poetry and it is amazing. The book has 4 chapters.Chapter 1 - Poems of Love - These are poems that are romantic and enlightening. The chapter starts off with a great poem called "Elusive Moon." A poem that is well written where she talks of the stars and a "Teasing Moon." It ends with a wonderful freestyle poem called "Light of Her Soul." Which is a about two lovers.Chapter 2 - Poems of Life - Starts off with a great but sad poem called "A Million Tears." Where Michelle pours her heart out but it has a happy ending. This chapter really shows the authors love for nature and flowers. It ends with a meaningful poem called "Journey of Life." Which is about the struggles and joys of life.Chapter 3 - Poems of Friendship - Begins with a great poem called "A Friend in Need." Which is a poem about needing someone and being there for someone. The chapter ends with a poem called "True." Where she gives her opinion of the human soul and the meaning of true friendship.Chapter 4 - Poems just Because - Begins with a wonderful tribute to her sons who are clearly loved and appreciated. Then the chapter ends with a poem where she thanks God for all the blessings she has in life. This book is a wonderful read and I found it very enjoyable. The author shows her versatility in the many subjects she writes about and the many forms of poetry she writes, from rhyming, to freestyle. She is extremely talented, and this is going to be a 'coffee table' book for me because its the kind of poetry book you read over and over again. The author will be publishing a novel soon and if her poetry book is any indication of her soon to be published novel. Then I will order it as soon as it becomes available. Michelle Irrizarry Leonard is a very talented writer and has a promising career as an amazing author. This poetry book is terrific and the author did a great job!

Expulsion & Other Stories consists of two parts: a novella followed by a group of short stories. But the main protagonists have one thing in common: they are all women coming of age in difficult times. In the short stories, set in post-Stalinist Russia, the women are confronted by dictatorship's mundane face -- a minor bureaucrat, a school teacher, a doctor. Nobody spells out the rules of survival to the young girls and women, yet each learns to play -- or pays the price, that of facing “expulsion”. The novella “Face” shares a similar motif of expulsion but takes the reader to a different place -- the urban sprawl and property greed of modern Vancouver.

The writing is crisp, engaging, and mystical. I was drawn into the arc of the novella within a few lines and was sorry when it ended. It wasn't "too short" in terms of execution, but it was so enthralling, that I wanted more.Overall, the writing is daring and unconventional but never pretentious or interfering. Just good, good writing and multiple great reads between the novella and other short stories. This is the first work by this author that I've read, and I will look for more by her.

The Iliad: Join Achilles at the Gates of Troy as he slays Hector to Avenge the death of Patroclus. Here is a story of love and war, hope and despair, and honor and glory. The recent major motion picture Helen of Troy staring Brad Pitt proves that this epic is as relevant today as it was twenty five hundred years ago when it was first written. So journey back to the Trojan War with Homer and relive the grandest adventure of all times. The Odyssey: Journey with Ulysses as he battles to bring his victorious, but decimated, troops home from the Trojan War, dogged by the wrath of the god Poseidon at every turn. Having been away for twenty years, little does he know what awaits him when he finally makes his way home. These two books are some of the most import books in the literary cannon, having influenced virtually every adventure tale ever told. And yet they are still accessible and immediate and now you can have both in one e-book.

The Iliad and The Odyssey, by Homer

Amazon.com Review This is a boxed gift edition of Fagles's two widely acclaimed translations of Homer.

The Iliad is typically described as one of the greatest war stories of all time, but to call it a war story does not begin to describe the emotional sweep of its action and characters: Achilles, Helen, Hector, and other heroes of Greek myth and history in the 10th and final year of the Greek siege of Troy. The Odyssey is, quite simply, the story of Odysseus, who wants to go home. But Poseidon, god of oceans, doesn't want him to make it back across the wine-dark sea to his wife, Penelope, son, Telemachus, and their high-roofed home at Ithaca. The story is told in easy-going, beautiful poetry; the characters speak naturally, the action happens briskly. Even the gods come across as real people, despite the divine powers they exercise constantly. Both works have been hailed by scholars and the public for the powerful language that brings clashing, pulsing life to these ancient masterpieces.

From the Back Cover Now available again—a beautiful hardcover gift set of Robert Fagles’s award-winning translations of Homer

Translated by Robert Fagles Introduction and notes by Bernard Knox

Praise for The Iliad: "Plain and direct, noble, above all rapid . . . leading the reader forward with an irresistible flow. More readable than Lattimore or Fitzgerald, and more performable . . . [Fagles’s] version is imbued with humanity." —Oliver Taplin, The New York Times Book Review

"Tremendous eloquence . . . An Iliad primed for grandeur." —Douglass Parker, The New Republic

Praise for The Odyssey: "Robert Fagles is the best living translator of ancient Greek drama, lyric poetry, and epic into modern English, and his translation of The Odyssey is his finest work so far." —Garry Wills, The New Yorker

"A memorable achievement . . . Mr. Fagles has been remarkably successful in finding a style that is of our time and yet timeless." —Richard Jenkyns, The New York Times Book Review

About the Author Homer is a legendary ancient Greek poet, traditionally said to be the author of the two great epics of Greek history: the Iliad and the Odyssey. Both books are considered landmarks in human literature, and Homer is therefore often cited as the starting point of Western literary and historical tradition.Stephanie L. Budin earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. She lives in Camden, NJ.

Great stories, bad translation of the Odyssey By Surgery100 This review is split into 2 sections, first a review of the translation itself and then a review of the Kindle edition.Translation:Homer's stories are great and in this translation extremely easy to read. They were originally written in dactyllic hexameter, a very difficult-to-read metric. Some translations (Chapman's and Pope's) attempt to maintain the rhythm and while they succeed in maintaining a rhythm, the convolutions necessary to make the story fit make them very difficult to follow. The Butler translation does away with all attempts at poetry and is written in prose. This makes the story very easy to follow. One glaring problem is that while the Iliad follows the original Greek (and hence the Greek names), the Odyssey suddenly changes and Zeus becomes Jove, Poseidon becomes Neptune and so on. This makes the story extremely difficult to follow as every character "changes name".Kindle edition:In terms of the Kindle conversion, this well done. This edition does not suffer from broken lines as other Kindle editions do.

The ground is dark with blood By bernie With many books, translations are negligible, with two obvious exceptions, one is the Bible, and surprisingly the other is The Iliad. Each translation can give a different insight and feel to the story. Everyone will have a favorite. I have several. For example:"Rage--Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus’ son Achilles,Murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses, hurling down to the House of Death so many souls, great fighters’ souls. But made their bodies carrion, feasts for dogs and birds, and the will of Zeus was moving towards its end.Begin, Muse, when the two first broke and clashed,Agamemnon lord of men and brilliant Achilles."-Translated by Robert Fagles, 1990“Sing, O Goddess, the anger of Achilles, son of Peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans. Many a brave soul did it send hurrying down to Hades, and many a heroes did it yield a prey to dogs and vultures for so were the counsels of Zeus fulfilled from the day on which the son of Atreus, king of men, and great Achilles first fell out with one another.”-Translated by Samuel Butler, 1888“Rage:Sing, Goddess, Achilles’ rage,Black and murderous, that cost the GreeksIncalculable pain pitched countless soulsOf heroes into Hades’ dark,And let their bodies rot as feastsFor dogs and birds, as Zeus’ will was done. Begin with the clash between Agamemnon—The Greek Warlord—and godlike Achilles.”-Translated by Stanley Lombardo, 1997“Anger be now your song, immortal one,Akhilleus’ anger, doomed and ruinous, that caused the Akhaians loss on bitter lossand crowded brave souls into the undergloom, leaving so many dead men—carrionfor dogs and birds; and the will of Zeus was done.Begin it when the two men first contendingbroke with one another—the Lord Marshal Agamémnon, Atreus’ son, and Prince Akhilleus.”-Translated by Translated by Robert Fitzgerald, 1963“Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleus’ son of Achilleus and its devastation, which puts pains thousandfold upon the Achains, hurled in the multitudes to the house of Hades strong souls of heroes, but gave their bodies to be the delicate feasting of dogs, of all birds, and the will of Zeus was accomplished since that time when first there stood the division of conflict Atrecus’ son the lord of men and brilliant Achilleus.”–Translated by Richmond Lattimore, 1951“Sing, goddess, of Peleus’ son Achilles’ anger, ruinous, that caused the Greeks untold ordeals, consigned to Hades countless valiant souls, heroes, and left their bodies prey for dogs or feast for vultures. Zeus’s will was done from when those two first quarreled and split apart, the king, Agamemnon, and matchless Achilles.”-Translated by Herbert Jordan, 2008“An angry man-there is my story: the bitter rancor of Achillês, prince of the house of Peleus, which brought a thousand troubles upon the Achaian host. Many a strong soul it sent down to Hadês, and left the heroes themselves a prey to the dogs and carrion birds, while the will of God moved on to fulfillment.”-Translated and transliterated by W.H.D. Rouse, 1950“Achilles’ wrath, to Greece the direful springOf woes unnumber’d, heavenly goddess, sing! That wrath which hurl’d to Pluto’s gloomy reignThe souls of mighty chiefs untimely slain;Whose limbs unburied on the naked shore,Devouring dogs and hungry vultures tore.Since great Achilles and Atrides strove,Such was the sovereign doom, and such the will of Jove!”-Translated by Alexander Pope, 1720“Achilles sing, O Goddess! Juno. (Pallas) Athene. Minerva. Aphrodite. Venus. Poseidon. Neptune. Ares. Mars. Hephaestus. Vulcan. You will find that some translations are easier to read but others are easier to listen to on recordings, lectures, Kindle, and the like. If you do not see information on specific translators, it is still worth the speculation and purchase. Right after the translation readability and understanding, do not overlook the introduction which gives an inset to what you are about to read. The Stephen Mitchell translation goes though each of the major characters so well that you think you know them before you starts reading. Other introductions explain the struggle between different types of power. Rodney Merrill’s 28 page introduction focuses on singing. The Oxford University Press Barry B. Powell has an extensive introduction with real “MAPS”. Also there is information of the finder Schliemann. We even get annotation on the meaning being conveyed. Our story takes place in the ninth year of the ongoing war. We get some introduction to the first nine years but they are just a background to this tale of pride, sorrow and revenge. The story will also end abruptly before the end of the war.We have the wide conflict between the Trojans and Achaeans over a matter of pride; the gods get to take sides and many times direct spears and shields.Although the more focused conflict is the power struggle between two different types of power. That of Achilles, son of Peleus and the greatest individual warrior and that of Agamemnon, lord of men, whose power comes form position. We are treated to a blow by blow inside story as to what each is thinking and an unvarnished description of the perils of war and the search for Arête (to be more like Aries, God of War.)Troy - The Director's Cut [Blu-ray]

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Epic story, great translation By Jesse Rouse This book is the first epic poem ever written, and it still ranks among the best. Reading this book is fundamental to understanding the rest of Greco-Roman literature, as it is referred to constantly by the great Greek and Roman authors. The story itself is very good, telling of the Greek beseigment of Troy, attempting to take back Menelos' beautiful wife Helen, who was stolen by a Trojan prince. The great heroes of Greece (Ajax, Agamemnon, Diomed, Achilles) battle Hector, defender of Troy, and his army. The gods on Mount Olympus are divided, some taking the side of the Greeks and some the side of the Trojans. The gods frequently shift the balance of the war, and the deterministic worldview of the Greeks is easily seen. At one point Agamemnon, king of the Greeks, says that he only did things because the gods had subconsciously forced him to. At another point Homer mentions that the Greeks' wall fell because "It had been built without the concent of the immortals, and therefore it did not last."At any rate, it is a very insightful glimse into the mindset of the ancient Greeks, and is very insteresting. I would highly recommend reading this book. I do have one complaint, though. For some reason all of the gods' names are Roman instead of Greek. For example, Zeus is always changed to Jove. I fail to see why this is necessary, unless they were leading you into a reading of the Aenied. If this is the case, Butler should have explained it. Other than that, however, this was an excellent translation.Overall grade: A
