About the Author LLOYD ULTAN holds the appointed government position of Bronx Borough Historian. He is a professor of history at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and the author of over 1,000 articles about the Bronx and ten books including The Northern Borough: A History of the Bronx, and The Birth of the Bronx, 1609–1900. SHELLEY OLSON taught at the University of Houston, the University of North Carolina’s Center for the Advancement of Teaching, and Wake Forest before relocating to New York City, which inspired her to write this book.

Ultimate indeed -- a triumph to a little explored part of New York City By Robert C Ross Who knew?I've walked thousands of miles in New York City over the past 40 years -- the Bronx was only Yankee Stadium (both of them), the Zoo, the Botanic Garden, an Irish football stadium, Arthur Avenue for Italian cuisine, City Island, the Harlem River, the High Bridge, the Croton Aqueduct and Woodlawn Cemetery. Treasures all of course.But under Lloyd Ultan's superb guidance, just the tip of a wonderful world of wonders -- 25% of the Bronx is parkland, and there are miles and miles to walk before I truly have even a superficial understanding of this under-appreciated part of New York City.Based on another Review, here, I immediately bought a copy of The Beautiful Bronx 1920-1950,j and spent ten hours reading and making bucket lists of places to visit. Here is an author who not only loves his subject, but who has a superb ability to write about his subject well and with great passion and accuracy.The iBook works well enough on my iPhone for walking purposes, and I also carry the excellent The Encyclopedia of New York City: Second Edition on my iPhone to double check details, or to fill in additional information.A triumph, actually three triumphs, for anyone who loves New York City and each of its boroughs.Robert C. Most visitors, even New Yorkers like myself, are not aware of them. This book makes all those places accessible with clear direction and info. I was not aware that the Bronx is 25% parkland ! Well written, easy to read with lot of interesting historical and other info. Orchard Beach is certainly on my list of places to visit this summer. The book also has walking tours -- which I plan to take to get to know the Bronx. Great guide that I will be using for a longtime.
