How to Love San Francisco – One Year in the City by the Bay, is the story of a spirited young woman who finds adventure in San Francisco. By crossing continents Hanni, in her mid-twenties, starts a new life—with unforeseen hurdles. When Hanni gets the offer to work in San Francisco for a year, she doesn’t expect the experience to turn her life upside down. Not only does she become infected by the Silicon Valley virus to start her own company, but she also falls in love with an American guy whose behavior causes her to question her understanding of relationships. Sacrificing German caution for American optimism, Hanni navigates the ups and downs of this bizarre new world, from finding a place to stay in the most expensive city in the U.S., to deciphering the cryptic code of American dating, to developing a taste for the “secret sauce” of Silicon Valley! A rousing, fresh twist on the fictional memoir, How to Love San Francisco – One Year in the City by the Bay takes you on a year-long excursion of life in this “least American” of American cities, one filled with cultural clashes, international friendships, and an outsider-turned-insider’s view of what living in San Francisco is really like.

If you’ve never been to SF before, you definitely want to go there after reading this fresh take on the city By Henk-Jan van der Klis Johanna Lehmann threw in her first-hand experiences of staying in San Francisco to portrait the Bay City through the eyes of the German girl Hanni Bayers. In How to love San Francisco – One year in the City by the Bay, Hanni got the chance to work in San Francisco for a year. After a warm reception by her own colleagues, the book’s not so much on her actual work, as well as the adventures in the city. She galls in love with Nick, an American guy, that isn’t as exclusive as she hoped for. With colleagues Vijay she initiates Healthquest, a start-up and discovers how difficult that practice is. Countless restaurants, bars, museums and parks are visited. The Golden Gate Bridge and Park, the nature reserves north and south of San Francisco, as well as the Stanford University, Silicon Valley are frequented. Housing problems, sports and the amazing parties and exposure of LGBT community in SF. Cultural differences between Germany and the USA, as well as tips for further explortion. It’s all packed in month by month chapters, which read as travelogue, travel guide, fictional love story, chicklit, and self-realization memoir. combined. If you’ve never been to SF before, you definitely want to go there after reading this fresh take on the city.

Disclaimer: I used to work with the author so I imagined her narrating the entire thing, but it's truly a fun book and I'm lending all my girlfriends my copy. The story takes you all around San Francisco and the bay and has rekindled my curiosity in the area. After living in the bay 15 years, I'm finally interested in visiting Alcatraz and other sights I never found all that intriguing up until now. Johanna's book brought them to life for me. It's refreshing seeing the city through a newcomer's eyes, but the connections our heroine makes with the people around her (even that kindly man in the airplane in the very beginning of the book) are what really made me love this book. I was confused with Hanni when her boyfriend acted strangely, and I had a great time reading all about her trips with her best friends.I read this book in one sitting on an airplane! I just didn't want to put it down :)

By ac I'm about a third of the way through but had to share how much I'm enjoying Johanna's book! She captures what is exciting, intimidating, wonderful and--even for an American like myself--foreign about the culture of San Francisco. Her insights made me see the city through new eyes. Most people in San Francisco today are transplants. While you might not be coming from as far as Europe, this city can feel like the moon if you're from somewhere else (yep, even if that somewhere else is just a US state east of California). Johanna's playful tone, infectious curiosity and straight-talk reminds you that you're not alone in your quest to make the most of your time in San Francisco. You'll learn a thing or two whether you've been in the city for 15 minutes or 15 years.
