The definitive travel guides that make you feel like a local wherever you go. Monoclemagazine covers the world with its network of bureaus (New York, Toronto, Zurich, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Tokyo, Singapore), its more than 30 dedicated correspondents based from Beirut to Bogota, Sao Paulo to Stolkholm, and its team of on-the-road reporters based out of its headquarters in London. Monocle-the magazine that covers urbanism and the city design like no other-knows about the hidden gems in all the great cities. It also knows where to take an ambassador for breakfast, an on-the-go businessman for a late night cocktail, or where to get an astute concierge at ungodly hours. Its deep understanding of cities and all they have to offer has been compiled in the new Monocle Travel Guides. Launching this spring with editions for London and Tokyo, followed by New York and Hong Kong, these beautiful books reveal the Monocle team's favorite places, from the ideal route for an early morning run to the best spots for independent retail. Aimed at people who do not want to be tourists but rather feel like locals when they travel, these are books for those who want to mix the classic with the contemporary, want to get beyond the cliches, and know they can get a feel for a city even if they only have a few days. And they are full of surprises and quirks: the books will guide you to a grand hotel but also to a cozy two-star, and will leave you drinking in a local corner bar or being served by a great waiter who knows his craft-while being wary of pushing you into the newest, hippest, soulless bar. Created by the Monocle design team, these authoritative guides will be trim enough to drop into your pocket and wise enough to stay by your side throughout your travels.

PDF Ebook Download Online: Gnedich, by Maria Rybakova

This book is a novel-in-verse about the first Russian translator of the Iliad, the romantic poet and librarian Nikolai Gnedich (1784-1833). Since Gnedich spent almost his entire life translating Homer's epic poem, Maria Rybakova has chosen verse as the most appropriate stylistic means in recreating his life. To the English-speaking world, this genre of poetic biography is best exemplified by Ruth Padel's Darwin - A Life in Poems. Like the Iliad itself, the novel consists of twelve Songs or Cantos, and covers the life of Gnedich from his childhood to his death. It depicts the lives of Gnedich and his best friend, the poet Batyushkov, who is slowly losing his sanity, and incorporates motifs from their poetry, from Homer's epics, and from Greek mythology, as well as magnificent images of imperial Russia and the Homeric world. The space of the novel covers snowy Russian villages, aristocratic St. Petersburg salons, magnificent Italian landscapes, and the austere Greece of Homer's heroes. Rybakova allows readers to lift the veil of secrecy that surrounds imperial Russia, the foregone era that's lost forever and only comes to life by the will of a writer. *** Maria Rybakova was born in Moscow. She studied Greek and Latin in Russia, then in Germany and subsequently in the USA where she is now teaching the subject. Her first novel, Anna Grom and her Ghost was published in 1999. Several novels and short stories followed. Maria Rybakova is a recipient of numerous literary awards in Russia, including Students' Booker Prize, Eureka Prize, Serguei Dovlatov Prize, Antologia Award, The Russian Prize, Globus Award. Her novels have been translated into German, Spanish and French. Gnedichis her first book to appear in English.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An evocative and well crafted narrative poem By Douglas P. Gnedich is a novel in verse about the first Russian translator of the Illiad, and as such it brings up some interesting points about the nature of translation. Is a translator of a book but a mouthpiece for a ghost? One does not profess to read Fowlie when they read Rimbaud, or Robert Pinsky when we read Dante. Gnedich's dread is the dread of invisibility. As a man, he is bent and half-blind, almost grotesque, but the most profound part of him that endures is an imitation. Rybakova's fashioning of this character is superb, his feeling exquisitely captured through a myriad of images. These images reference, distort, and reimagine events of the Greek tragedies and histories, mirroring Gendich's own distortions. He is half in the world and half lost in words that are not his own. As Rybakova writes, "From one dusty book to another dusty book -- this is his path and he himself is ash, and dust, and an empty word." This poetic biography of Gnedich offers up a portrait of a man his toil and near delirious ardor, his doubt and humanity. The translation of Rybakova's own poem is, I would think, an exceptional one. I have not and cannot read this in the original Russian so thanks are due to Elena Dimov for carefully translating a work about the sorrows and doubts of translation into a poem rife with stirring lyricism

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By Alexandra Grigorieva A very good translation of a brilliant Russian original. Rara avis indeed.

A sharply observed, witty and confident novel brimming with drama, masquerade and mischief. In a bustling British city, decked out with NHS specs and Oxfam coat, Kulwant masquerades behind her old woman’s disguise, taking life or leaving it as she feels inclined, seeking new adventures and venturing back into her past. Divorced from her husband, disapproved of by her sons, mistrusted by their wives, Kulwant makes real contact through a jigsaw of meetings: with the Punjabi Punk who dusts her down after a carefully calculated fall, with Caroline, her gregarious friend from school days, who watched over her dizzy romance with Michael the archangel; with Maya the myopic who can’t see beyond her weeping heart, and with Rani/ Rosalind who’s just killed a man... Entertaining and provoking, complex and playful, A Wicked Old Woman is the story of the eccentric Kulwant and the lives that cross and collide with hers as her past catches up to her and starts to mix with her present. Inspired by authors such as Philip Pullman, Yann Martell and Markus Zusak, this book will appeal to fans of contemporary fiction.

A good story premise with an interesting viewpoint regarding life in the 60s-80s By meghan varner An intriguing story, but difficult for me to read/follow. I enjoyed the background and premise of the story, but I was confused many times while reading the book. I am not sure if it was the writing style, format or just the moving around between the characters and whether she was in disguise, reflecting on an event, or herself, but I had to re-read sections of the book many times to make sure I was following the events and people. Once I re-read and knew I was following the section though I enjoyed the story and the world that was created for me to explore.I do not use stars on my blog, so this would actually be a 2.5-3 star if I did because again I enjoyed the story, but had some difficulties. I think if I had not had a hard time following the story this would have been a 3-4 star.Again, I do wonder if the writing style was just told in a different storytelling fashion from what I am used to reading because as I researched this book and author I found quite a few reviews and posts that likened the writing style to poetry, which I do not usually read. The story premise was intriguing and language very descriptive. I could imagine some of the scenes and thought this was an interesting take and view of and into cultural differences, norms and societal changes through the 60s, 70s and 80s. This question and my enjoyment of the story idea and descriptive language have left me wanting to read another book by Ravinder.I received this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own!

Early Laurel, like many Montana frontier towns, was shaped by tenacious settlers who struggled to carve a living from a harsh, often unforgiving landscape in the wake of the Indian Wars. Laurel started as little more than a railway station and a handful of businesses serving railroad workers, farmers, and ranchers in the early 1880s. Irrigation projects soon transformed the dry, dusty prairies along the Yellowstone River near Laurel into productive farmlands. Homesteaders flocked to the valley. By 1908, Laurel had grown into a bustling shipping and servicing center for three major railroads and boasted the largest rail yard and roundhouse between Seattle and St. Paul. In the 1920s, it became a jumping-off point for tourists destined for Yellowstone Park. A decade later, Laurel staked its claim in the regions emerging oil industry when the Laurel Leaf refinery was built. This small, unassuming town has played a vital role in the development of the Yellowstone River Valley and beyond.

The lies are about substantial events and have significant consequences. Very broad sweep, spanning a period of several years, these characters wrestle with honor and duty at the time of Napoleon. The author renders a fast paced story about how lies (and everything else) have many unintended consequences, many of which cannot be undone. The book surprised me and in the end I was sorry to leave this era and these characters behind.

(It is missing the author's stunning Epilog, which was restored only later from the original manuscript.)The translator, Jeremiah Curtin, demonstrates an abysmally poor understanding of the original text's Polish language, and an equally poor grasp of English style. His primitive knowledge of the book's subject matter and his inept, wooden, inaccurate translation--it contains some real howlers--help explain the novel's limited appreciation, until recently, among English-language readers.

The Pharoah and the Priest By Thora Dorn A well researched book, with loads of background about daily life of both the peasants and the nobility, this book was a fascinating read from beginning to end. The story line draws you in and makes you believe it could have happened this way, and brings an ancient time to life. I loved it!

Although I search out older novels, this one just wasn't my cup of tea, but it may appeal to other readers. If you like historical novels, you might enjoy "for Mischief done"

Best Ebook Online The Human Hive, by John Looker

This highly original collection of poetry by John Looker, published by Bennison Books, takes as its theme the idea of human work in all its forms. We are invited to share an epic journey with him through time and across continents – and what a journey it is!

With economy and intelligence, he spans the globe and navigates our common history over millennia. Here we meet our ancient ancestors as they conjure with possibility; a humble vegetable grower rebelling against the tyranny of straight rows; and a dancer longing for a break and recognition at last. We are taken inside the confines of a submarine; join a businesswoman locked outside on a hotel balcony; and witness a high-profile ambassador’s very public fall from grace.

The long poem, The Night Shift, is a tour-de-force. Its lyrical, almost elegiac opening stanza draws us into a world many of us will never experience:

The world is turning and a longitudinal arc dips slowly away from the sun towards the darkness. Somewhere along this littoral lies our city.

These delicately evocative lines soon give way to the gritty reality of law enforcement, hospital workers, chefs, doormen, and maintenance workers in ‘tunnels of primordial quiet and darkness’.

Equally compelling is our early morning call in Master Baker when ‘only monks, rung into church for matins, know this as a time to begin’. We can watch the baker at work as he fetches the dough, echoing the ancient arts of Egypt, Rome and the East. We can smell the yeast and warm bread and feel the need to dust the flour from our sleeve as we turn the page.

This is exquisitely wrought poetry documenting an extraordinary journey – from the timeless sweep of The Silk Road and the ‘lost Milky Way’ to a single tear in the eye of a 1950s housewife. John Looker is a gifted and accomplished poet and we could not ask for a better travelling companion.

A captivating, thoroughly readable and relatable book of poetry by John Looker By chris m Verified PurchaseI have just purchased John Looker's poetry book, The Human Hive and I really couldn't put it down. I read from cover to cover in one reading session, ignoring everything and everyone around me. I was captivated. I am a beginner in the world of poetry but all John's poems are written so cleverly and with sensitivity too. They are by no means simplistic, far from it, but they are very readable, easy to understand and relatable. They evoked gentle knowing smiles from me and a sense of wonder too in the wider subjects less familiar to me. I will be returning to it over and over again and if there are any parents out there who are the constant carers of children and thinking of purchasing this book, go straight to the poem on page 27 called Swan Lake, it's a stunner.

Human Labor and the Evolution of Humanity Toward the Frenetic Pace of the Contemporary World By Tom Davis I have been following John (Stevens) Looker's work for some years now. What attracted him to me at first was his consummate skill with traditional forms of poetry, but eventually his free verse and experiments with mixing free verse and traditional forms in the same poem began to interest me from both the standpoint of the craftsmanship involved and the artistry of the poems themselves. The Human Hive is Looker's first volume of poetry, and I am hoping it is not his last. Reading the poems as they have appeared over the years on his wordpress blog Poetry From John Looker (https://johnstevensjs.wordpress.com), I became accustomed to looking for symbolic meanings in both the construction of his poems and their strong images. Seeing the poems put together in a book is a different experience. Each individual poem invites an exploration of the individual or groups of individuals that are the subject of the poem, but the book as a whole is obviously crafted in order to invite a larger analysis. What Looker has accomplished is sweeping in both its intent and execution. Using human labor as a theme, he avoids showing the evolution of humanity toward the frenetic pace of the contemporary world, but instead shows the ley lines of relationship of humans over time. The first poem in the book, "Work (A Noun)" sets up this theme:"He stands. He weighs one flint in his hand, frowning, then swinging his arm high he sends that stonearchingthrough the air to the trees below, and it's spinning still. Changing shape. Becoming"a knife, a pot, the wheel, the printing press, railways, nuclear fission and the rule of law."There is the sense in the fourteen lines of the poem that what has evolved is not so much "...the whole man, in skins, squatting,/a ring of small children, thin dogs and beyond...", but the tools, knives, poetry, wheel, printing press, railways, nuclear fission and the rule of law, that come from our "two hands."As the book develops we come to understand that the core of our humanity has not changed over time even though our tools, and the world changed and evolved as the result of our use of those tools has had profound effects on our individual lives. There are seven groupings of poems in the book: Spinning the World, Martha (a picture of a single day in the life of one woman), the Silk Road, Tribal Loyalties, States of Mind, Ploughman, Master Baker, Night Shift, and Keeping Busy. In many of the poems portraits of individuals are drawn with a sharp eye. In the "Dancer", Looker writes,"She feels so alive! She wants, she needs, the sameexhilaration daily in her life,to burst from the chrysalis, break the chainof the prison door, to give her talents spaceto dance on a wider stage in the circle of light."In others groups pursue aims and interact in the endless dance that is humanity:"We could be with the caravans of Persia, listeningto the roll of the dice and the click of the counters;in the cool of a durbar;or sitting with the Moorsin the shady gardens beside the Alhambra --leaning forward with the others, watching and listening, the players absorbed in their cerebral strategy..." ("A Game of Backgammon")Place becomes like time, a kaleidoscope of the human hive where men and women come and go, play, work, love, and become who they are inside the enormous sweep of the human story inside the hive that is time and place and heart and spirit. Time, place, and individuals are specific, but we all exist and live our lives in relationship to other times, other places, other individuals, other groups, the flight of who we are inherent in the endless music coming out of the hive. The entire volume builds into a long poem, "The Night Shift", that shows us a single night in a city with all of its individuals pursuing their lives through their work:"There are those for whom the night is not for sleeping. They've left the cave by moonlight. Stalking, fishing, there is always someone working through 'til dawn. The Tribe is never closing down."The poem is as restless as the city that never "closes down," singing into the city's light, its underground, its hospitals, its policemen responding to the darker human happenings in the hive of the city, which is part of the larger hive. This is not the world of the ploughman or an individual woman in her kitchen or the hunter in the forest. It is no longer the confined walls of a cave, but it is larger and endlessly alive, although, in the end, still part of the doings of the tribe. The denouement of the book takes us to the "Caves at Nerja", "The Stadium at Olympia", "A Garden of the Ming Dynasty" as come to see the complex layering of humankind and the world through time, space, culture, work, and all the different songs and buzzing in the hive that encompasses the human universe. Looker flies across landscapes and time as if the limitations of the now have been magically eliminated and conjured into a three dimensional tapestry that makes up what for we, as humans, is eternity still unfolding. The Tribe goes on...This book by Bennison Books is a welcome, welcome addition to contemporary poetry. We should be hearing from Mr. Looker in the future.

To encounter his work now, in a real book, is a true delight. The individual poems come together under the one theme of work, enriching and supporting each other in a way that reads like one very moving human story. As a previous reviewer remarked, once you start reading you can't put it down. Though the title of this collection may suggest humans as drones in a narrow enclosed environment, the poems themselves open out beautifully to a vast world over time and space. They are elegant and exquisite. The long capstone poem, "Night Shift", is in itself a masterpiece.

Great Expectations and Hard Times, by Charles Dickens

Review "No more handsome edition of Dickens has yet appeared, nor is it easy to conceive of any which might surpass this one." --The Scotsman

From the Publisher The classic, definitive, world-famous Nonesuch Press edition of 1937, finally available again and bound in leather and linen. The text in these stunning volumes is taken from the 1867 Chapman and Hall edition, which became known as the Charles Dickens edition and was the last edition to be corrected by the author himself. The Nonesuch edition contains full-color illustrations selected by Dickens himself, by artists including Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), George Cruikshank, John Leech, Robert Seymour, and George Cattermole. The Nonesuch Dickens reproduces the original elegance of these beautiful editions. Books are printed on natural cream-shade high quality stock, quarter bound in bonded leather with cloth sides, include a ribbon marker, and feature special printed endpapers. Each volume is wrapped in a protective, clear acetate jacket. The books are available as individual volumes, or as sets. The six-volume set contains Oliver Twist, Bleak House, Christmas Books, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations together with Hard Times. The three-volume set contains A Tale of Two Cities, Little Dorrit, and The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit.

About the Author Arguably one of the greatest writers of the Victorian era, Charles Dickens is the author of such literary masterpieces as A Tale of Two Cities (1859), A Christmas Carol (1843), David Copperfield (1850), and The Adventures of Oliver Twist (1839), among many others. Dickens s indelible characters and timeless stories continue to resonate with readers around the world more than 130 years after his death. Dickens was born in 1812 and died in 1870.

Two great classics in one handsome Nonesuch Edition By Z Hayes My review here is not of the novel, but rather of the Nonesuch edition of Dickens' classic. The book itself is a facsimile edition of the 1937 Nonesuch Dickens, and is published by Barnes and Noble. The book itself is in quality hardback. The "Great Expectations and Hard Times" Nonesuch edition has the spine bound in leather and the rest of the cover is cloth-bound [the color is blue-grey].The dust jacket is clear quality plastic. The paper quality is of good stock and is cream in color. The text is set in Martin's Type and the illustrations are from the original Nonesuch editions [8 illustrations in "Great Expectations", and 5 illustrations in "Hard Times"]. This is a beautiful and affordable classic and the Nonesuch Dickens Classics will enhance any collector's library.

The story of the people, the land and the wonderful culture of Ireland, as illustrated and told by Dublin native and New York resident Daniel O'Sullivan. When I was growing up in Ireland, we used to give "pennies for the poor" in school every now and then. This was lunch money you'd give to the teacher for the children of Biafra, Bangladesh or some other poor country ravaged by famine, floods or war. As a kid, I remember thinking how cool it would be to meet another kid from so far away, me not knowing how desperate their situation was at the time. I still think a lot about those less fortunate souls around the world, and how lucky the rest of us are. All (100 percent) of the proceeds from my little book on Ireland will go directly to UNICEF and CARE in the hope it makes a difference to those in need.
