Few poems have been more variously designated than Comus. Milton himself describes it simply as "A Mask"; by others it has been criticised and estimated as a lyrical drama, a drama in the epic style, a lyric poem in the _form_ of a play, a phantasy, an allegory, a philosophical poem, a suite of speeches or majestic soliloquies, and even a didactic poem.

There are copious notes which are helpful, but I skipped most of the ones in the beginning as I just wanted to dive in. The definitions at the back are nice too because I didn't know what a few of the creatures were. It also explains terms and phrases which an inexperienced reader of older English may not know yet.

Milton's Comus By Yuliya This is a very good and thorough detailed analysis about John Milton, the greatest classic poet and player, that makes laugh everyone while reading his works. Some kind of biographical genre presents here, a letters and correspondence. This is very good source for studying courses, teachers and student's material.I am very glad I have it now on my Kindle readers.Enjoy.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Terrible By Bobby William Bell's introduction isn't attributed to him. Whoever laid out the text completely ignored the separation of each line of poetry, so that the book is in prose. Spaces between words are often omitted. The font is a more loopy version of comic sans, which is difficult to read. This is the most horrible paper back I have ever seen, and I've read self-published books by college students.

"Roxy belongs to me. I paid for her services, and she is going nowhere!"I stood, shaking in my sister's arms as the man I thought I loved swung a gun between my sister and me.Stephen, my sister's friend, laughed off Thomas' gun and attempted to take over the situation. "Why don't you put your water gun down?" Stephen asked. "You don't want to go there with me." Thomas' eyes bore into mine, and despite my wish to leave, I felt a tug in my chest. It wasn't his fault that he paid for a woman who didn't know what she really wanted out of life. I thought France would awaken my artistic passion. I thought it would solidify my relationship with Thomas, but all that it had really done was allow me to see how much I had messed up my life.Tears trickled down my face, mingling with the sweat. Stephen and Thomas were at a stalemate, each staring the other down. I sniffed and Thomas glanced my way.He was shaking, tears dripping from his eyes. His hair was pasted to his scalp. "Don't go, Roxy," he said with a voice full of pain. I trembled. "I love you!" he cried out.My sister guided me to the bed where she began to throw my clothes into a bag."Don't listen to him," Dee growled."Roxy." Thomas' voice went up an octave."Please," I cried, "I want to go home, Thomas. I'm sorry.""After all I've done for you?" He pointed the gun directly toward me and suddenly the room went still, voices hushed, breaths silenced. "I gave you money," he continued. "I gave you France. I gave you love and the chance to paint. And now you leave me?"In that moment, before I could respond, my so-called life flashed before my eyes and for a split second, I wanted Thomas to pull that trigger. Wonderful family, all-American sister, and me, the fuck-up. Instead of trying to be as good as my sister, I rebelled against it and became someone I hated. Selling my body and my dignity and now I had a gun in my face.My mouth began to form the words, shoot me, but instead, I spoke, "Thomas, I'm so sorry. If you love me, you'll let me go."I could literally see Thomas fold upon himself as if air simply vanished from his body. He held himself up against the wall, weeping from his gut. "Thomas," I whispered. Dee grabbed the bag from the bed, snatched my hand and pulled me toward the opened front door."Get out of here," Stephen called out. "Now."My heart and mind were playing tug-of-war with each other. I wanted to escape Thomas and to forget what he represented. I wanted to erase the black eye and swollen cheekbone of abuse he had given me when I begged to leave. At the same time, a part of me wanted to stay and accept the only love I had ever received. At the threshold of the door, I looked away from Thomas and began to follow Dee out the door."Roxy!"I turned and looked at Thomas. His eyes were wide and frightening. The gun rose and leveled off directly in line with my heart."I can't let you live without me," he said slowly. The gun, the animate seemed to quiver as if alive while aimed at me.Before Stephen could pull out his own weapon, Thomas fired. A yellow-gold flash erupted, and the bullet, in a slow haze, came toward me. I could hear myself scream "no," and heard the high-pierced yell of Dee, but I was frozen in place. The bullet ripped through my tee shirt and plunged...I screamed, springing up from my sleep. Sweat dripped from my body and my skin was boiling hot. I gulped air in like I had been in a desert for weeks without water or oxygen. I blinked for several minutes, taking in snapshots of my bedroom. I saw the NYU banner taped onto the mirror of my dresser and slowly, my breaths came to me.I snatched my cordless phone off its base and punched in a number. It rang three times before a gruff male voice answered, "Yea?""Steve," I whispered, "it's me.""Roxy, what's wrong?" Despite my sweating, I dug deep under my comforter."I'm sorry for calling you this early. I know you're leaving for Cali today.""Don't worry about it." He yawned. "What's going on?""I had the dream again," I whispered, still shaking. "I got shot.""Oh Roxy, honey." Steve sighed. "Did you, um, die in the dream?""Close." I wiped my tears away with the sleeve of my tee shirt. "Last time, the gun went off and I woke up. This time the bullet hit me, but I woke up before it went into me."Silence. Heavy breathing. Sniffling."When is it going to end?" I cried, one hand holding the phone while the other wiped away tears, pushing my stringy hair from my face. "The dreams are just getting worse and worse. I might die in the next one.""Babe, you won't die. You didn't die. Thomas did. He shot himself.""I know." I fell back onto my pillows. I coughed up a sob. "I know he's dead. I helped kill him. It should have been me. I ruined him.""Stop it, Roxy! I don't want you to say that again. Ever. You got me?"I nodded, though I knew he couldn't see me. "Yes, yes, I have you," I whispered. "I'm sorry, Steve. I heap all this shit on you. It's not fair.""I'm your friend. I don't give a shit about what's fair or not fair.""It's been a few years now. I don't think I'll ever let it go.""Don't cry, Roxy." I could hear Steve sniffling. "You want me to come over?""No, but thanks. I need to get up.""First day at Visions?""Yep. Full-time, no less. I guess I really impressed Charlise during my temp gig.""Of course, you did. Roxy, you are a very talented woman. I know she loved you.""Aww, you are so sweet. Better be glad you're already taken." We laughed."Seriously, Roxy. You're strong, and you're going to get through this."I took a deep breath and let it out. I batted away tears and promised myself that no more would be shed today."Thank you, Steve. I can't tell you how much it means to have you as a friend.""Same here. If you need me before I leave, call. And just because I'll be three thousand miles away doesn't mean you can't call if you need to. Even collect.""Thanks, 'cause you know I'll be broke for a while," I said with a laugh."I love you, Roxy.""Love you, too, my friend. Wish me luck.""You don't need it."I hung up the phone and tried to push Steve's love and positive voice inside me for safekeeping. I always found it ironic that the only person I could trust with my past and my pains was a man. Steve just walked into my life at the right time, for me anyway. I shook my head and began to peel my comforter from me. I slipped out of the bed and planted my feet on the floor. I sighed wearily. When would I be able to have a full night of sleep without dreams of my past, dreams of gunfire, dreams of a fatal attraction that unfortunately or fortunately, ended the way it did? Before it rang, I banged my hand atop of my radio, turning the soon-to-be-buzzing alarm clock off."Okay," I whispered. I stood up and flattened my hands over my tummy and thighs. I had an hour and a half to shower and dress before I had to be in SoHo to meet with Charlise, the owner of a chic, small but quaint art gallery by the name of Visions. If anything, my new job at Visions was a positive in my life. Especially at a time when I was about to be kicked out of my NYU apartment and needed a job to pay rent and to utilize my interior design degree. Not only would I be getting paid to design the new bookstore café, but I would also be able to dream of art and painting, my secret loves.I walked over to my dresser and pulled out panties and a bra, and then headed over to my closet to select an outfit. A Sunday paper was on the floor, glaring at me. It was open to the real estate section where I had been looking for a place to live."You'll find a place to live," I told myself, though I had been looking for three weeks and had found nothing. Now that I had a job that paid, I couldn't find a place to sleep. Figures.I stood at my dresser and applied my makeup and jewelry. A picture of my sister Dee and me caught my eye. We were hugging fiercely, me in my cap and gown, her in a pale pink summer dress. Even on my graduation day, she outshone me. My faint smile faltered a bit. I swallowed a few times, trying to squelch the jealousy that threatened to come up."Not on my first day," I gritted out. "I love Dee. She loves me. She's a great person, and so am I."Self-affirmation. Something I had to do every day to reassure myself that I was worth something. Sometimes, it didn't work.I riffled through my top drawer to get my silver watch and stopped. A white tee shirt. Emblazoned on the front: Viva la France! I gripped the dresser and tried not to think of him, but I failed. High school graduation, college in California. Bad things passed through my mind, leading up to Thomas Dugué -- a man who would change my life in more ways than one.He was debonair and witty and his French accent drew me in with a tenacity I hadn't seen before then. His words lulled me in, and before I knew it, I was being asked to travel to France with him, for a fee and the opportunity to leave France whenever I wanted to. "But," he had said, one of his sly, come-hither smiles falling upon his lips, "once you get there and feel your painting muse flow, you won't want to leave."He was wrong. Steeling myself against painful memories, I grabbed my purse and headed out the door."Girl, you are the best decision I've ever made," Charlise said as she tossed her flaxen blond hair over her shoulder. I chuckled at her use of girl, almost sounding like a sister, despite her debutante appearance. Body-wise, Charlise could have easily been a model. Tall, svelte with a walk that made her appear to glide across the floor as opposed to walking like us mere peons. One could easily tell that her passion was art and painting, as she stood before me, dressed in white overalls with splatters of colors all over her. The only thing in place was her hair, for even her face, the right cheek to be exact, held a spot of emerald-colored paint. She made the perfect image of the perfect artist."Thanks for the compliment," I replied. I moved along the gleaming hardwood floor as my eyes took in the splashes of colors that adorned the bright white walls of the gallery. "I am so happy to be here," I added. "To be around such beautiful artwork really feeds into my artistic aura.""Wanna see my latest piece?" Charlise asked. Beams of light bounced off of her.I nodded anxiously, and she guided me down a hall that gave way to a newly structured escalator. We went downstairs where the café would be located. I smiled when I entered the large space, watching construction workers smooth walls in order to place oak wood paneling onto them. I had suggested to Charlise that with the brightness and colors that permeated the gallery, a more classic coloring of oak, hunter green and burgundy would go over well in the bookstore and café. The fact that she took my advice made me swell a little in pride. I swallowed and continued to follow her down another hall to a door on the left."This is where I do my painting," she said before flipping on the switch. I sighed when I spotted her painting resting upon an easel in the middle of the room. She was an abstract painter, like me. It took a keen eye, and some knowledge of the artist to understand the abstract painter's work, but I got this one, no problem. Upon the pristine white canvas laid colors of emerald, navy and a chocolate brown, strokes of colors so smooth, it was as if the grace of a swan painted the lines. I could smell the Earth resonating from her painting, her love of Earth, the emerald representing the growth of life, the navy reflecting the oceans and the brown imitating the soil, the life force that helps to make the things we need grow. I was impressed."Wow," I said. I sidled up beside a grinning Charlise."You like?" she asked, hugging herself and rocking back and forth on her heels."It's incredible, girl." "I've been on such an artistic high since I went on this cruise a couple months ago.""Cruise?"We left the room and made our way into the space that would serve as the café. Kitchen materials were already set, and Charlise poured us both a steaming hot cup of coffee. Black, just like I like it. "Yea, I went on a cruise called The Art of Life," Charlise said. "For an entire week, we sailed the beautiful waters, ported in Cancun, although I believe their next cruise is going to the Caribbean. Got to hobnob with the hottest new artists out today, learned some new strokes, read up on new opportunities during the workshops, and even got a second to do a little painting.""Whoa!" I exclaimed. I sank into a thickly pillowed chair and slipped one leg up under me. "That sounds so incredible. I wish I could do something like that. I mean yea, I have my degree in interior design, but art has always been in my heart. It would probably awaken the artist in me to surround myself with other lifescapers.""I like that. Lifescapers." We both smiled for a moment before Charlise jumped into the chair beside me, as giddy as a child on Christmas. "You can go!" she squealed."Go where?" I chuckled as I warmed my hands on the ceramic mug. "On the cruise?" Charlise nodded enthusiastically. "I would love to go. Let me go pack my suitcase!" I noticed Charlise's huge grin and decided I'd better hook her to reality. "Sike! Girl, I have no money, feel me?""Oh, come on, Roxy, I could give you a week or two's pay upfront." I shook my head so hard, it damn near fell off my shoulders, my streaked hair flipping back and forth across my lips. "Unh-unh, I'll need that to get me a new sleeping pad. I'm trying to prove to Deandra, that's my sister, that I am a responsible person. I've been doing well so far this past year. Blowing two weeks' pay on a trip would be above and beyond irresponsible.""Surely your sister knows how important art is to you?" Charlise questioned. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime cruise." I blinked a few times, understanding what Charlise was saying, and wanting to tell her that she didn't know the entire story, but I bit my lip. Deandra had very valid reasons for not believing or trusting anything I did or said."The next cruise is in a week," Charlise added, perking my attention back up to her. "I know it's late, but if you could get the money, I could probably sweet-talk someone into getting you aboard. They do the cruises four times a year, but this would be the perfect time for you to go.""She's not going to give me the money." I shook my head and took a sip of coffee. Charlise completely ignored me."It could refresh your whole outlook and rejuvenate and escalate your appreciation for the arts."By now, I was moaning. I really wanted to go on this cruise. It felt like something I had to do, but I had no way of paying for it myself, and knew of no one who would be even willing to unload that kind of cash for me at a moment's notice. Except, well, hmm, not even she would do that, I didn't think. Besides, Deandra had given me an iBook for my graduation gift just a week earlier, so I knew giving me money, when her wedding was at the end of the year, would be a big no. Then again, I wouldn't know for sure unless I asked."Hold up, sis! I have to get something to clean my ears out because I know you are not asking me for that kind of money!"Oddly enough, I was hurt by Deandra's outburst. I mean, hell, I would have been like what the hell, too, but I had barely gotten the question out. First, I wanted to tell Deandra about my great job, and then reintroduce her to my love of painting before I mentioned the cruise. By the time I finally got to it, she had put two and two together."Sis," I said, half-whining, half-crying, "you know I wouldn't even ask you this unless it was an emergency.""A cruise?" Deandra asked blandly. "A cruise is an emergency? If that's the case, sign my butt up for one also because I've been working sixty-hour weeks for the Orioles lately and could use a vacation. Excuse me, an emergency." I kicked off my shoes, padding along my apartment, pacing actually, praying and hoping that I could find the right words to sway Deandra over to my side of the fence. "I'm sorry, Deandra," I said, in a clipped, professional tone. "It was rude of me to call and ask you for money. All you or Mom and Dad have asked of me is that I try to put my life back together, to leave the past in the past and move on. I think so far I've done a good job of that.""You have," Deandra said. The high-pitched shrill became a soft, mellow yell. "We are all so proud of you, sistergirl! Couldn't you tell at graduation?"I smiled at the memory, thinking back to how gleeful everyone was to see me walk across the stage in my cap and gown. They all laughed when I snatched up my degree and did a little happy dance. That day was a good day, most definitely, despite my feeling second best at my own graduation."I saw how happy you guys were," I admitted. "Made me happy to know I could put smiles on your faces. It meant a lot to me."We both sat in silence until I spoke again. "My boss offered to pay me two weeks upfront, so that I could go on the trip." Even through the phone, I could feel Deandra's eyes widen as she sucked her teeth. "I didn't take her up on her offer," I added, smirking because I knew Deandra would be blushing with embarrassment right now."Deandra?""Yea, babe?""For real, I do want to go on this trip. Don't ask me why because I just found out today, but it's like, I love painting, I love art, and something inside of me is saying, 'Go on this trip, Roxy!' I think I could find myself there, reconnect myself with things I threw away, trying to forget them."If anything would get Deandra, it would be the truth. More than anything, I knew I had to be on that cruise come next week. Like it was destiny, something I never listened to in the past, but was trying to befriend as I grew up."You really want to go that bad?" Deandra asked. Her voice had softened considerably. I sighed, answering, "I know, under the circumstances, I don't deserve shit, but yes, I really do want to go that bad -- bad enough to take a loan from you if you have the extra cash. Once I move out of my apartment and get into a new place, I will hook you back up with all your money, sis. I promise.""I don't want to regret this later," Deandra said, almost in whimper tones."Deandra, you won't," I said, practically skipping around my tiny apartment. "Will Stephen get mad that you gave me the money?""Hell no." She laughed at me. "I have my own individual account with a little sumptin' sumptin' in there. He doesn't even bother to ask about it.""Thank you so much, Dee Dee," I said. I wanted to cry at the Hallmark moment we were having. "Um," I added sheepishly, "can you wire the money to me? Like today?""Damn it!" Deandra joked. "You beg for almost an hour and now you're being Miss Dictator. Fine, I'll have it wired to you within the hour.""Oh, my God!" I squealed into the phone, running and sliding along the floors of my apartment. "I think this experience will change my life, girl! Call me crazy¿""And you know I already think you don' lost it!" "Hush. For real, Deandra, this means a lot to me. I'm going to come back from this trip a whole new woman. Just you wait and see!" © 2003 by Shonell Bacon and JDaniels.

Excellent Sequel...Worth Your Read By A Customer I was a huge fan of LuvAlwayz, but I was blown away at just how much better Draw Me with Your Love was! This time, the authors stick with one couple and flesh out the couple's trials and tribulations, as well as their hot and sizzling sexual interplays. The authors deal with serious issues such as rape, prostitution and abuse in a way that enlightens. If you're looking for a book to read that entertains, makes your heart quicken and teaches you a thing or two about how life can be, you owe it to yourself to check out DRAW ME WITH YOUR LOVE!!!A FAN

I got so into this book that I felt like I personally knew the characters. Enter Roxy, a fiesty, smart, next-door type of girl who has a painful past that she doesn't want anyone to know, in fear of them treating her differently. She use to be a high class escort. She moves to another city to erase her past and start a new life. She meets Antonie on a cruise and they instantly become friends. At first, I wasn't too fond of Roxy because she was always up in Antonie's face, but towards the middle of the book I loved her. She falls in love with Antonie and tries to keep her past just what it is the past, but something unexpected happens and everything falls apart and there's nothing Roxy can do about it.I highly recommend this book! It was good from the beginning to the end. It gets five stars easily!

Wish more would have been mentioned about the characters from the previous novel, but it was all good none the less. Looking forward to the final book in the trilogy.

Spoon River Anthology, by Edgar Lee Masters

From School Library Journal YA-- A richly annotated edition resuscitates a fading American classic. Because Hallivas's pithy introduction adds both perspective and gossipy detail, YAs will enjoy learning about the individual struggles of the 244 characters who speak from the cemetery on "the hill." Secondary teachers will find this a useful tool for preparing character sketches, thanks to the lively, specific annotations naming names: who rejected whom; who challenged whom, both physically and politically--and it is all expertly researched. The microcosm of Spoon River comes alive with its central conflicts of agrarian traditionist v. temperance and abolitionist activism. From the grave, the hard-drinking, roughly hewn frontiersmen challenge the do-good social reformers, reenacting the struggle the 19th-century midwestern push kindled: would any government law prohibiting drinking or slavery impress these strong individual-rights townspeople? They offer their own answers as Masters intended, but they offer the responses against a tapestry of detail the editor provides. Hallivas's cogent essay traces the philosophical influences that marked Masters's works: Spinoza, Goethe, and especially Whitman. The inclusion of several photographs of the characters who speak adds important visual detail.- Margaret Nolan, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VACopyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "Definitive... Hallwas' reading of 'Spoon River' is undoubtedly the best and the one the poet intended. The Midwest is seens as the New World Eden assaulted by the forces of modernization." -- Chicago Tribune. "Massively annotated... provides a wealth of information." -- The New Republic

From the Back Cover

In Spoon River Anthology, the American poet Edgar Lee Masters (1869–1950) created a series of compelling free-verse monologues in which former citizens of a mythical Midwestern town speak touchingly from the grave of the thwarted hopes and dream of their lives. First published in book form in 1915, the Anthology was the crowning achievement of Masters' career as a poet, and a work that would become a landmark of 20th-century American literature. In these pages, no less than 214 individual voices are heard—some in no more than a dozen moving lines. Alternately plaintive, anguished, enigmatic, angry, and contemptuous, the voices of Spoon River, although distinctively small-town Americans, evoke themes of love and hope, disappointment and despair that are universal in their resonance. This American classic is reprinted here from the authoritative 1915 edition.

Several towns argue that they stake their claim in being what Masters asserted to be this mythical town. Petersburg and Lewistown, two towns of otherwise minor repute seem closest... but it is so much better we haven't an actual town... Spoon River's residents are our next door neighbors, whether we live in Central Illinois or Central Florida, or southern Alaska.Masters has written not fables, but the essence of American life. He hasn't captured the life and times of 1915, but has instead recorded in 1915 the life and times of our present day America. The same reason the paintings of Norman Rockwell makes sense is why Edgar Lee Masters poetry makes sense. To read the quick messages on the gravestone of one man, learning a little bit him, and something about a neighbor or two, we can learn a little about how we live in communities today. Our lives, like Jimmy Stewart's character in "It's a Wonderful Life" found out, interact and impact everyone we meet. Who we love, who we should love and who we reject. And when we die, others feel the loss. Masters has aptly put this in a humorous, yet insightful way into short verses. The poems don't rhyme. The meter is not solid, and the poetics aren't intricate. They aren't poems like Poe's or Dickinson, not in the way they wrote American poems. Don't expect iambic pentameter-based sonnets or villanelles. Expect a conversation, and listen in.The poetry here is in the subtle use of social nuance. In the nuances are his insight and wit. Two readings will bring to light what you miss in the first.Buy this book, read it slow. It reads faster than most poetry book, but don't get caught in the temptation to zoom through each poem just because you can. After you read it, see the play if it happens to be performed in your town.I fully recommend it.Anthony Trendleditor, HungarianBookstore.com

After a quick download I happily searched for my favorite character. Hmm, not there. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. No. Just not there. After a little more comparing with a REAL BOOK I see that at least 30 of 212 or so characters are missing. This leaves me somewhere between "beggers can't be choosers" and WTF? Free shouldn't be synonymous with crap and indifference. And always in the back of my mind is the spectre that haunts all electronic media..how easy it is to change it, censor it, "correct" it, turn it 180 degrees to where the prevailing winds blow. And nobody notices. If this book means something to you find another version or stick with paper.

38 of 39 people found the following review helpful. A Reminder that history is people. By Andrew S. Spoon River Anthology is an American Classic. It has touched me since my grandfather read parts of it to me more than thirty years ago. Ostensibly it is a collection of autobiographical poems of the silent inhabitants of the town's graveyard. The broad theme, the book's strategy, is the great sweep of what America was like in the nineteenth century. The stories of their lives; joys and sorrows, successes and failures, loves and hates, and secrets of those people in the graveyard are the tactics. Above all, E.L. Masters exposes the hypocrisy and denial in which people have always lived their lives. Even today, in a much worldlier time than the turn of the century when it was written, the brutal honesty of the citizens shakes our complacency. This is no mellow reflection on the good old days. Its citizens corrupt and are corrupted. They suffer loveless marriages. Men run away to war to escape jail or rejection in love, women suffer stifling lack of opportunity and equality. The citizens die in childbirth or from lockjaw contracted from a cut by a rusty knife. Yet in reading about these lives we understand a little more about what it is to be human. None of us could fail to find some stories that in ways match ours to a greater or lesser extent. An in doing so, be granted in life the level of insight into ourselves and others that these storytellers achieved only after their lives had ended.

Wright I was fascinated to read a Southern gentleman's impressions as he literally circumvented the world, visiting Europe, Palestine, Egypt, India, Ceylon, China and Japan - in 1884! Mr. Gorman's brother was Ossian D. Gorman, editor of the New Era newspaper in Talbotton, Georgia. The travel reports were probably sent to his brother for publication for the benefit of Southern readers. Since he was of the 'landed gentry', a principal interest during his travels was methods of agriculture used in the various climates and soil conditions, as well as possible crops that might adapt to his native Georgia and northern Florida. A sociable fellow,he observed and described the different cultures with whom he came in contact, sometimesreflecting biases of the southern aristocrat of the time, which today's reader may find amusing. I highly recommend this entertaining account of the world and its customs as it wasin 1884.Norma Gorman Wright

About the year 1834, when the earliest of the Sketches by Boz were appearing in print, a young composer named John Hullah set to music a portion of an opera called The Gondolier, which he thought might prove successful on the stage. Twelve months later Hullah became acquainted with Charles Dickens, whose name was then unknown to those outside his own immediate circle, and it occurred to him that he and 'Boz' might combine their forces by converting The Gondolier into a popular play.

I like my poetry to have vivid imagery used and Charkes Dickens, although a good author, I found his poetry to be more like hymns, best said aloud. Being deaf, meh... It's ok.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Really worth a read By Sherry Merry There are so many books being published these days that lack quality. This one doesn't. The author has done enough research on The Cathar religion during the 1200s to make the plot very believable. It twists and turns with mystery, intrigue and even romance to keep the reader's attention. I found it difficult to put down once I started reading. This author also develops the characters so well you feel as if you know them and why they act as they do. I hope we hear more from Kate Riley. The ending of this book is perfect for a sequel.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. LOVE this book!! By AnnieMo This is a great little book. Very readable. Hard to put down. This author has a knack of describing situations and characters without flowery and unnecessary words. She's true to the period and beautifully describes the smells and noises that would attack the senses. She really puts you in the moment. She doesn't use nonsense paragraphs to add to the pages, but fills every page with concise and focused storytelling ... and a great story it is and so very well-written! Cannot wait for a sequel!! .

A well-written, interesting plot that has been researched to the detail. Ups and downs, twists and turns all keep the reader turning the pages. This is my first book by this author and highly recommend it!

In a warm and welcoming conversational style the author takes the reader to exciting Caribbean experiences: Puerto Rico kidnap; buy the baby in Haiti; co-pilot to a sick pilot; hunkering down to a killer hurricane; Montserrat when the lid blew off; trailing the U.S. military in Grenada; burying an island character in Saba. Sounds like fun to me.

Judy and Hal are True Pioneers of the Caribbean. The chapters jumped around a bit, but, on the whole I had mental pictures of Bobby Every, other Saba friends.I wish they had mentioned starting a restaurant , Brigadoon ,on Saba.A transplanted St.Thomas friend(he grew up there ), now living in the Midwest, brought us the book to read and for me and my husband it was a quick read ,we were smiling (much needed in this society, today), through the Caribbean Adventure, with Judy and Hal in the small plane with the cats and all the furniture! We hope to see Judy and Hal in January on Saba.Joanne McCarty (please correct the spelling of my name in your records).

Hal certainly has met some unusual characters with whom he has experienced a myriad of "adventures." The incidents he relates about his time in the Caribbean are delightful (or scary as in the excellent description of being in the middle of a hurricane on Sabo). I loved the Jungle Jim story. I was laughing so hard that my husband asked what I was reading. So I ended up reading most of the Jungle Jim episode out loud to him.Well done, Hal!!Sharon Lang

By RRS Nice lite reading which is a pleasant change from the rather heavy reading I am accustomed to. Something on almost every page made me smile. In addition to brightening one's life, the stories told here should be reviewed by anyone contemplating moving to the Islands. They evidence the fact that only people with a good sense of humor and a high level of patience should think about staying longer than the average tourist. Possessing those traits might result in enjoyable and rewarding adventures.

PDF Ebook Wittgenstein Jr, by Lars Iyer

The writer Hari Kunzru says “made me feel better about the Apocalypse than I have in ages” is back—with a hilarious coming-of-age love storyThe unruly undergraduates at Cambridge have a nickname for their new lecturer: Wittgenstein Jr. He’s a melancholic, tormented genius who seems determined to make them grasp the very essence of philosophical thought. But Peters—a working-class student surprised to find himself among the elite—soon discovers that there’s no place for logic in a Cambridge overrun by posh boys and picnicking tourists, as England’s greatest university is collapsing under market pressures.Such a place calls for a derangement of the senses, best achieved by lethal homemade cocktails consumed on Cambridge rooftops, where Peters joins his fellows as they attempt to forget about the void awaiting them after graduation, challenge one another to think so hard they die, and dream about impressing Wittgenstein Jr with one single, noble thought. And as they scramble to discover what, indeed, they have to gain from the experience, they realize that their teacher is struggling to survive. For Peters, it leads to a surprising turn—and for all of them, a challenge to see how the life of the mind can play out in harsh but hopeful reality.Combining his trademark wit and sharp brilliance, Wittgenstein Jr is Lars Iyer’s most assured and ambitious novel yet—as impressive, inventive and entertaining as it is extraordinarily stirring.

Almost every individual page is a pleasure, and that is more than enough reason to keep reading him."—Daily Beast“An absolutely exquisite, elegant novel, with a cadence and rhythm all its own."—Emily St. John Mandel's A Year in Reading, The Millions“One of the funniest books of the year, this philosophical bildung shows that intellectuality can be poignant, especially when its couched within a campus novel."—Flavorwire, 50 Best Independent Fiction and Poetry Books of 2014“Stunning. Wittgenstein Jr. is Iyer’s strongest book to date. He has again managed to write a book that’s funny, unexpected, and profound, and his prose is suffused with a calm beauty."—Emily St. John Mandel, The Millions“It’s a triumph that Iyer pulls off this high-wire act so brilliantly. It’s irreverent, smart, and off-kilter."—John Yargo, The MillionsOne of BuzzFeed's Most Beautiful Book Covers of 2014One of GQ's 8 Books You Need to Know in September“A funny, smart, and somewhat insane campus novel, perfect for anyone’s back-to-school hijinks.”—Flavorwire, 10 Must-Reads for September“Iyer's prose is never any less stark than it can be, building a sharp momentum that brings the boys and their professor to a surprising yet fitting conclusion."—AskMen.com, Recommended Reading for September“Depression, sadness, gloom--these three themes permeate the novel, and the subtle prose conveys them with deftness."—PopMatters“Meanwhile, the novel is in crisis – and I intend that as a compliment. All ends well though, with an unexpected spot of non-theoretical romance.”—Verso (UK), Books of the Year“It isn’t really a novel, or not only a novel. It’s more interesting than that… Iyer has compiled an idiosyncratic – and surprisingly tender – paean to love and learning."—Times Literary Supplement“Wittgenstein Jr is as much a satire on the contemporary academy as it is an existential novel of ideas. But is is also a love story. Ultimately it's a novel about the idea of philosophy, about what Wittgenstein's students call 'the romance of learning' and that all-consuming erotic yearning for knowledge that you sometimes experience as an undergraduate. It is also an elegiac book."—the Telegraph (UK)“Iyer’s work proposes a visibly different sort of British literature to that which dominates the discourse… The author has set an alternative path for himself, producing books you can read in an afternoon but think about for a year.”—the Independent (UK)“Wittgenstein Jr wants thought to ‘tear out our throats’ and his fulminations against ‘English lawn’ dons who facilitate the monetisation of Cambridge provide the angriest, funniest monologues... Right now, Iyer’s novel insists, utopian thought remains an urgent necessity."—New Statesman (UK)“Written in Iyer’s now unmistakable musical prose Wittgenstein Jr provides a wonderful character study of one of the greatest philosophers of modern times, a hilarious take on modern life inside academia, a set of profane t-shirt slogans and a whole lot more besides."—The Quietus“His cartoon of campus life is one of the joys of Iyer's new-found freedom." —Steve Mitchelmore, This Space“Without shortcuts, [Iyer] tries to show not only what is lost in the modern world, but what remains—what his characters retain even through their despair, because of their despair, even if they don’t know it. One might call it hope... Wittgenstein Jr walks a line between cynicism and optimism, between the laughable and the serious...I, for my part, found it hilarious."—The QuietusOne of Publishers Weekly's Big Indie Books of Fall 2014"Iyer already has a reputation for combining brainy dialogue with madcap action, but the triumph of his latest (and best) novel is that the cartoon turns out to have real substance."—Publishers Weekly, starred review"A droll love story... Existential angst is rarely this entertaining."—Kirkus Reviews"With their ingenious blend of philosophical dialogue and vaudevillian verve, Iyer’s trilogy, Spurious, Dogma and Exodus, earned a cult following. Wittgenstein, Jr. compacts Iyer’s concerns into a single campus novel, set at early 21st-century Cambridge. It should serve as an ideal introduction to his work."—The Millions, Most Anticipated Books for the second half of 2014Praise for Lars Iyer’s trilogy:“It’s wonderful. I’d recommend the book for its insults alone.” —Sam Jordison, The Guardian“Uproarious.” —New York Times Book Review“I’m still laughing, and it’s days later.” —Los Angeles Times“Viciously funny.” —San Francisco Chronicle“A tiny marvel . . . [A] wonderfully monstrous creation.” —Steven Poole, The Guardian“This novel has a seductive way of always doubling back on itself, scorching the earth but extracting its own strange brand of laughter from its commitment to despair.” —The Believer

TAYLOR Wittgenstein Jr, Lars Iyer Something of a study of a fall into madness, this novel centers around three characters: a Cambridge logic professor jokingly called Wittgenstein Jr; Ede, an aristocratic student; and Peters, a scholarship student and the narrator. At the term’s beginning there are 45 students enrolled in the professor’s class; by the third week an apostolic dozen remain. When discussing why they are hanging on, one student quips that they want to watch the professor’s nervous crack-up. And Wittgenstein Jr does seem on the verge at all moments. His teaching defies logic—his supposed field—to border on the type of mysticism that revels in affirming opposites: “Perhaps it is not a question of belief. Perhaps the concept of God is not a thing in which one can believe or disbelieve.” It very soon comes out that the professor’s older brother, an Oxford mathematician, committed suicide. With that fact, the novel’s tone moves from complete understated comedy and satire into its prime mode, a character study. Not that the humor subsides, for there are grand comic moments: when Ede splits up with his “fated” love appropriately nicknamed Fee, he and Peters make tea of magic mushrooms in hopes of achieving “choking despair . . . chaotic despair . . . the despair of Lucifer . . . annulling despair . . . crawling despairs, like rats, like spiders.” And so on. While there is little plot—and I won’t ruin the climax of that little bit—the work still builds like a novel with the increasing intensity of the dark soul journey that Wittgenstein Jr takes and the efforts his students, especially Ede and Peters, make to rescue his sanity. This is a read that is both funny and moving, and it works even better on the retake. Lots of allusions to Shakespeare and Nietzsche, appropriately. 226 pages.

Iyer is the finest legatee in English of Thomas Bernhard--- the bitter humor and the sense of language, the rhythms of speech, the rhythms of thought, the feel for thought, the feel for language, the feel for the divagations of the soul, the wanderings of the heart, the saving warmths of delight and humor, the healing laughter of divine tears. The portrait of the teacher, Wittgenstein Jr, superb as it is, is not quite as superb as the portrait of the students. Herein lies Iyer's genius quintessential. The Kirwin Twins, Ede, Titmuss, Doyle, Mulberry and the quiet, long-suffering Peters, our narrator as it happens, are drawn with such economy and wit, highest wit I tell you, as to rival almost the bard himself. Here are groundlings, high-brow, Oxbridge university level groundlings, of such depth and duncehood as to become paragons for the ages of the students that every teacher has privately railed about for aeons. This bunch are St Augustine's students in Carthage, the very reason he fled Africa and sought better working conditions in the academies of Rome. These bright wastrels are bonded into a brotherhood of brilliance aspirant that Samuel himself would smile to see, to hear, to go drinking with. These dear fellows may be the most heroic group of students ever to grace the pages of literature, heroic pages of literature, servants, are they, to the utter greatness of their calling, to be students of the master himself, WJr.After all of this, Iyer brings the book to as sweet and beautiful and moving a close as you can imagine. Such a magnificent re-telling of life of the mind and heart at the heart of the love of learning.

Real novelists use question marks sparingly. Its lay-out resembles a drama script or a book of poetry. Leaving blank space on each page is also rare in real novels. Instead, green novelists like Garcia Marquez (GM) in “Autumn of the Patriarch” and Javier Marias (JM) saved many trees, filling every available space on a page by ignoring the full stop (GM) or as JM does, writing solid blocks of text, rarely indented. Therefore, Lars Iyer (LI)) is neither a novelist nor an eco-friendly author. There is logic ("Logik") for you. This treatise, not a novel, records the (lack of) interaction between a new Cambridge philosophy lecturer, quickly nicknamed Wittgenstein (W) by his rapidly dwindling student audience. Twelve(!) remain, who do not take notes, because W only asks questions. They are not properly lectured or tutored in class or individually in W’s rooms or during their many outdoor walks. W’s students are baffled by his many questions about thought, logic (Logik) and philosophy, with W's questions becoming more desperate as their course progresses.Do they write papers or read for exams? Or is just listening to W’s hundreds of definitions and assertions and counter-assertions about philosophy, his tonnes of rhetorical questions and endless aphorisms, his paranoia about Cambridge dons, his explanations about his brilliant mathematician brother’s suicide at 20, his rants about the Flood that will wipe out Cambridge and of Noah’s Ark landing on a mountain top and much, much else, enough to secure a degree?W’s students remain ignorant about the meaning of logic, pure reason and philosophy. Some rather go for thespian displays, sex, drugs and rock & roll or near-fatal alcoholic mixtures. No one understands or is really interested in W’s lectures and warnings, except Peters, the farm boy student and part narrator... This book (never a novel) exudes supposedly superior knowledge about a giant logician, but is very repetitious and lacks flow. I ignored my key criterion: “What’s on the next page beyond p. 50?” and waded on. Iyer (Ayer was a real philosopher) is a word acrobat who never made me smile or laugh out loud.

The Bertrams, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

Of course there was his theme of boy meets girl, he/they fall in love, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy eventually wins girl. The emotion seemed more raw though. In "Bertrams" Trollope also threw in some exotic locales such as Jerusalem and Egypt. On the surface this can seem boring but Trollope was always so good at looking under his character's skin to their psychology, their emotions, and motivations. His writing never gets old for me and compared to some of today's harsher literature and even harsher current political/financial/emotional climate reading Trollope feels like a conversation with a trusted friend. He never lets you down.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. the nature and limits of prudence By Harold Kaplan Books by Trollope that are not part of the two series (Palliser, Barsetshire) tend to be neglected. This one deserves far more attention. It is Trollope at his best. The structure is intricate, the characters superb, the pace brisk. the wit and satire sharp . No dry spells, no simpereing Victorian maidens. This has a Balzacian flavour to it; there are a number of characters looking for the main chance. Caroline is one of his most interesting creations. There are three plots which are both parallel and contrasting: George and Caroline, Adela and Arthur, and Sir Lionel's search for a rich heiress. I would say the major theme of the book is the limits of prudence. The scenes in Cairo and Jerusalem add color, an exotic quality, to the story. A delightful read.

THE STORY INVOLVES TWO YOUNG MEN WHO ARE EACH IN LOVE, ONE GEORGE BERTRAM AND ONE ARTHUR W. GEORGE DENOUNCES HIS UNCLES MONEY AND WILL NOT BE MOVED TO ANY SORT OF ACTION BY IT -- THUS CAUSING THE WOMAN HE LOVES TO POSTPONE THEIR MARRIAGE. SHE WANTS TO LIVE WELL WITH LOTS OF MONEY. ON THE OTHER HAND, ARTHUR DOES THE SAME, FEELING HE CANNOT MARRY HIS LOVE SINCE HE HAS NO MONEY. THE EFFECT THAT MONEY OR THE LACK THEREOF HAS ON THESE 4 PEOPLE AND THE OTHER CHARACTERS IN THE STORY IS THE CENTRAL THEME. THE BOOK IS SO BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN AND EXAMINES DEEPLY THE PSYCHE OF ALL THE CHARACTERS. I LOVED IT!
