American Mole: The Cartel is a work of fiction set in the post 911 world that follows the life of John Jacob Olsen, formerly Jason Forsythe, in his life as a mole for the government of the United States.Cartel is suspenseful in a completely believable way. JJ Olsen not only has a different name, it is also a different world that he has found himself living in. The story begins to move not long after he heads to Mexico for a vacation and to search for a retired friend. Washington DC has been bombed and his parents killed. The new terrorists of the world are mostly loners and small groups, more difficult to fight, and he needs a break after the deaths and the job he has just finished.JJ’s trip begins in Cancun, where he meets a young woman who joins him for a motorcycle trip down the Yucatan peninsula, where they enjoy the ruins, camping out as they go. They experience nature and native Mexico to the fullest, even descending into a newly found cenote and cave system. Their trip offers the reader a fascinating look at the beauty and culture of the Yucatan. Afterwards, they return to Cancun and part ways. JJ then heads to Costa Rica in search of his friend, Randy. Along the way he has a brief romantic interlude which culminates in a visit to an active volcano. Excitement builds when he reaches the coast and is reunited with Randy and his wife, Olivia. JJ checks with his banker and finds that his savings have enabled him to buy a small island off the coast. Unfortunately, this transaction brings him into contact with the head of a violent cartel, ES17, and its head boss, Iggy Sanchez. With threats of violence, Sanchez controls JJ’s life, forcing him to help with his plans to put his son in the White House. As JJ struggles to free himself from this new threat, he finds love and companionship with another victim of Sanchez named Lovely.The ending is an excellently written surprise, gripping and moving every minute, and again Dr. Hull has a hit which would be a thrill to see on the big screen.

One reviewer claims that the action is a bit slow, I disagree. J.J. Olson is not James Bond (although he does get along very well with the ladies). When we see Bond in film, the action must be fast-paced. Not so in a book. A good writer takes the time to paint a word picture and that's what Dr. Hull has done in Cartel. In film, raw emotions are easily seen and heard. Within the pages of a well-written book, its characters along with their emotions, need to be fleshed out so the reader can "see" the real picture, but with words.A little background... J.J. has been recruited by the US government to infiltrate and eradicate national and international organizations whose goals are subversive on every level. However, this book differs from Dr. Hull's last one, The Vespers, because J.J. was seemingly not recruited to help bring down this huge world-wide drug cartel; he became involved circumstantially when he attempted to buy a piece of land, in this case a small island with a bad reputation.So....if you like a well-paced emotional thriller complete with blind-sided twists and turns, you'll love reading Ronald Hull's American Mole series, particularly Book 2, The Cartel. Ron has achieved what other writers wish they could do. He has successfully painted a vivid word picture, complete with dazzling colors and strong emotions. Ron, keep writing; I love your works of art.

By Alice Mariner On one level, this is a cracking adventure yarn to rival any of Ian Fleming's, featuring nasty gizmos, exotic locations, more graphic sex than James Bond ever manages, and a deadly quest by hero JJ Olson to bring down the Baddest Of The Bad Guys who is seeking world domination beneath the cover of Roman Catholic ministry.At a deeper level, however, the story is an allegory betraying a profound concern for the future of a post-9/11 United States in which politicians are failing to grasp the nettle of international terrorism and radical sects are running out of control threatening to destroy the most cherished American values. These and the wonders of the natural environment Ron Hull describes with compassion and a haunting nostalgia.The book is meticulously researched, carefully crafted and engagingly written, although there are times the reader might wish for a slightly crisper pace. That said, however, it is easy to envisage the two sequels Dr. Hull is planning -- there must be plenty more villains out there to grapple with. A great read, Ron!

Many sentences are left hanging. When I downloaded a Quality Classics edition for 99 cents I discovered that all poetry is left out of this free book. The poetry is not just fluff. It is crucial to the book so do not waste your time with this free edition.

Jacobi I have been intrigued by this novel for years, but I only knew Udolpho by reputation until I finally read the novel recently. Many studies of Gothic fiction cite Radcliffe's novel as a classic Gothic text, one of the early examples that set the standard for the genre as we now think of it. Scholars of the Female Gothic subgenre in particular point to Udolpho as an early example, mostly due to Emily St. Aubert's perfect turn as the helpless female heroine who became a stock character in early Gothic fiction. Then, of course, I read Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey in a college seminar and imagined Udolpho to be a laugh-worthy, melodramatic, fake horror fest. I can't say there aren't any laughable moments (Emily's poems), or that there isn't melodrama (lots of fainting; the parting scene between Emily and Valancourt at the end of Volume I), or even that there isn't some fake horror (all of the "mysteries" are explained by the novel's close); however, Radcliffe's novel defied my expectations in more ways than it reaffirmed them.The Oxford World's Classics edition with the introduction by Terry Castle is the only edition I've read, but I recommend it particularly because of the introduction, which I found very interesting and insightful after finishing the novel. One point that Castle makes is that despite the novel's Gothic label, Udolpho is more like "a disconcerting textual hybrid." The multi-generic nature of the novel is one of the features that most surprised me; it takes quite a while for Emily to become imprisoned in Udolpho and what precedes her time there is almost anti-Gothic. Emily has perfect parents and the perfect upbringing, though she begins to suffer relatively early on when her mother dies. After this point, she and her father embark on a long trip across France, described at length by Radcliffe in what Castle terms "a bizarre quasi-travelogue." Here we get super-detailed descriptions of natural scenery and of the innate goodness of the St. Aubert clan. Yes, some of the nature described could be filed under "sublime," and such descriptions are standard in many Gothic texts. They are also standard in many Romantic texts, and while the overlap between those two genres/movements is significant, for some reason the Gothic has been viewed as the dark, popular (ew!) sibling of the (maybe) sunnier (self-satisfied?), high-art-producing Romanticism. While the St. Auberts' innocence and goodness make them prime targets for our evil Italian villains (Montoni, primarily), they do spend a lot of their time happily exploring nature, and even after several tragedies befall her and dampen her spirits (and make her faint a lot), Emily is relatively cheerful at times. In other words, the mood is not always Gothic in the novel; indeed, it's probably Gothic less often than it is something else. And then besides the travel narrative, there are also those poems that Emily composes on a whim, about sea nymphs and weary travelers. Radcliffe also incorporates excerpts from poetry into her prose, along with lines from Shakespeare plays, and she begins each chapter with epigraphs from other works. I think that in many ways, the mixing of genres in the novel ultimately makes it a more interesting and more complex text.Udolpho is a very long novel (almost 700 pages), but, as an insanely popular best-seller in the late 18th century, Radcliffe's work was apparently quite a page-turner. Even Austen's Henry Tilney admits that after hijacking his younger sister's copy of the novel, he "could not lay down again; I remember finishing it in two days--my hair standing on end the whole time." For modern readers, there's not going to be much in Udolpho that is particularly scary, but Radcliffe does create suspense by introducing mysterious plot elements and not resolving those elements for, literally, hundreds of pages. But because all of those elements are, indeed, resolved, and any potentially supernatural phenomena are explained away, the novel isn't really about scaring the reader at all. Instead, we are invited to witness, as many other reviewers have noted, the coming-of-age of the heroine, as she struggles to overcome her passion and superstition to live a life governed by reason and logic. At the same time, however, I agree with Castle that Radcliffe aims "to reawaken in her readers a sense of the numinous - of invisible forces at work in the world." These forces are not exactly supernatural, though; instead, "Radcliffe represents the human mind itself as a kind of supernatural entity." In this sense, Udolpho is truly a Gothic classic as a result of its interest not in mysterious external forces, but in the way in which the human mind registers such forces, and how it attempts to understand and work through them. The Gothic's preoccupation with human psychology is more often-commented on in response to American Gothic works like Poe's short stories or Female Gothic classics like Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," but I see this as a primary interest of Radcliffe's in Udolpho, as well.I have given the novel five stars, which reflects my personal enjoyment of the work and my interest in the themes and issues it raises for a reader. It will probably be most well-loved by those interested in Gothic fiction, literature by women, and those who are enamored by lengthy, patient, meticulously-detailed narratives. As a fan of all of those things, I recommend the novel and its introduction very highly.

A Very Useful Book, Handy, and Lets Others Know You're Looking for Hidden Mickeys By Nathan Higgins Having this book made my twelve-year-old son's trip to Walt Disney World an over the top positive experience. Being a tweenage boy, he was concerned that Disney had a lot for girls and younger children. However, the Hidden Mickeys turned out to be something that was right up his alley, and this book proved to be a helpful resource to him in finding them.Before purchasing this book, we had simply considered getting a Hidden Mickey app. We figured that if we were already going to carry a device through the parks, adding an app wouldn't increase the bulk or the weight in our backpacks. (This was one of our concerns about purchasing a book.) We decided against an app, however, in large part due to the fact that our devices tend to be battery hogs; once a device goes down, an app would no longer be usable. So, we settled on a book. (It turns out that this book fit into our backpacks ok, and my son didn't much mind carrying it around the parks with him. Oftentimes, he simply carried it in his hands.)Aside from not needing a battery, this book also provided my son with the opportunity to make notes next to each Hidden Mickey that he found. Did you see the one over here?"As a field guide, this book often led us right up to the Hidden Mickeys. There were a few (in the challenge section, "My Favorite Hidden Mickeys") that did prove a little too difficult for us to find. In the end, my son went back through his notes and counted up over 180 Hidden Mickeys that he did find. Many of these were so "hidden" that we would not have even known that they existed, except through the information given to us in this book.

My whole family usually loves big thrill rides but 2 of my kids needed a tamer schedule this visit. We spent a lot of time on the fun activities and searching for hidden Mickeys. The one on the wall in Boma gave us a run for our money - we actually had to Google an image for an extra clue! Next time we plan a trip I will invest in the ebook, too. This was a rainy visit and my book needed to stay in a ziploc a lot. I also kept my phone in a ziploc, but the touch screen works through the plastic so the ebook would have been much easier to use.

Prescient, in a sense : many events described have since happened. Look at the most recent Kepler discoveries as but one example. Great characters : Devlin, Belechenko, female President Belknap. Would make a great movie. "Deep Impact" meets "Contact"? Susan Sarandon as the President? Or perhaps Kathy Bates? Also would be an excellent TV series, which could run long and offer some more character development. Good tech details in this book, as well as thought provoking nods to constitutional and other issues. Recommend!

I got all the thrills from this book that I get from reading those. I love plots that peal off in layers and this unfolds until it kind of takes your breath away. I really don't want to give any of it away. I will say, it stays with you long after you have put the book down. It will cause you to have interesting dialogue with your friends as you seek to understand the repercussions of what happens here. Beware, one you pick it up - you had better block a few hours - you are not going to put it down.

This is the first time that they've been gathered into a single collection. It's great that they have been made available to readers, because some of them are difficult to find.I consider Douglas Thompson to be one of the most talented speculative fiction authors ever to emerge in the field of British speculative fiction. Along with such authors as Nina Allan, David Rix, Allen Ashley, D.P. Watt, Terry Grimwood and Rhys Hughes, he is one of the few authors who consistently write excellent and thought-provoking fiction. His stories are exceptionally insightful and imaginative, because he dares to explore different themes and issues. He clearly has a passion for telling good, strange and wild stories that will mesmerise his readers.Douglas Thompson's short stories feature excellent literary prose, imaginative storytelling and stunning originality. He writes refreshingly diverse stories with plenty of depth and imagination. The box affects his mother in an unexpected way.- A well written story with a distinct dark fantasy flavour.The Flowers of Uncertainty:- A fascinatingly surreal story about a writer called Harold Swimmer, his life and his relationship with a woman called Sharon.- I enjoyed reading about Harold and his life, because the author wrote well about him.- This beautifully written story was originally published in the Blind Swimmer anthology (Eibonvale Press, 2010).The Key to Harry:- An intriguing story about Harry Houdini and his wife, Bess.- This story has been co-written with Allen Ashley.Sylvia, Dumped by Her Boyfriend:- A story about Sylvia who becomes an extraordinary artist after she has been dumped by her boyfriend.- The ending is brilliantly sharp, disturbing and artistic.Sunday Relatives:- An excellent story about a man who's the director of a mental asylum and has a passion for model trains.- This story was first published in Rustblind and Silverbright: A Slipstream Anthology of Railway Stories (edited by David Rix / Eibonvale Press, 2013).Underpass:- An interesting and atmospheric story about children's tunnel adventure.- This wonderful story was first published under the pseudonym of Daniella Geary in Where Are We Going? (edited by Allen Ashely / Eibonvale Press, 2012).Madame Mannequin:- A bit different kind of a story about a mannequin.- This is a delightfully strange story that offers food for thoughts.The Enlightened Heart:- A fascinating examination of love.- This story has a perfect ending.The Pleasures of Television:- A brilliant futuristic and weird story about TV technology.- This story has dark and sharp humour that will please readers who are used to reading something different.Stations Are How Towns Dream:- An interesting and well written flash fiction story.- I have to admit that I'm very impressed by the author's ability to write flash fiction, because this story is amazing.Hypnostra:- In this story, people participate in Hypnostra conference that is organised by The Sleep Corporation. Hypnostra is a set of abilities that have lain dormant in the human psyche.- A well told story that has been written from the point of view of Max and Clara who are the participants' lead hosts.- This is one of the best stories I've read this year, because it gives a new twist to conference tales. It's a fascinatingly strange story.The Mystical Wardrobe:- A story about a mysterious wardrobe that mystically appears in different locations.- I enjoyed reading this story, because it was charmingly strange.Fugitive Dreams of the Enslaved:- Jason and Marina, who attended the conference organised by The Sleep Corporation, are trying to escape something.- This story is connected to "Hypnostra" in an intriguing way.Elspeth:- This is an intriguing horror story about a man who sees a ghost of a woman who has killed herself.- The atmosphere is fascinatingly weird and the ending is excellent.Death Trains of Durdensk:- An excellent story about trains that are filled with corpses and randomly travel through train stations in the middle-European city of Durdensk.- This story was first published under the pseudonym of Daniella Geary in Rustblind and Silverbright: A Slipstream Anthology of Railway Stories (edited by David Rix / Eibonvale Press, 2013).My Lost Sister:- In this fascinatingly dark story, the protagonist is aware of her dead sister.- I enjoyed reading about what happened to the protagonist.- The author writes well about a fractured mind.The Sleep Corporation:- A brilliant story about a police detective who investigates The Sleep Corporation that seems to be connected to a dead prostitute that was found hanging from a lamppost.- This story is connected to "Hypnostra" and "Fugitive Dreams of the Enslaved".Deadbook:- An interesting piece of modern weird fiction about a dead man who still seems to be on Facebook.- An excellent and well written story with a good ending.Martworld:- In this story, Michael lives inside Martworld, a vast dome, that is almost like a prison, because no-one is allowed to go outside.- This story is a memorable and powerful satire of our current world and the ever-growing supermarkets that are almost like small villages.- This story has been co-written with Allen Ashley.Colossus:- An impressively written story about the suicide of Alan Turing.- This flash fiction story demonstrates that sometimes shortness is better than length, because it's a perfect story."The Topography of City Parks" is a brilliant story about a married couple, Arnold and Rosalinda. Arnold is made redundant and becomes fascinated by leaf movements in the city. The authors (Douglas Thompson and Allen Ashley) write well about Arnold and Rosalinda and how they feel about each other. I've noticed that stories about married life often tend to be a bit annoying and frustrating, because not many authors have the ability to approach this matter in a new way, but the authors have succeeded in it."The Flowers of Uncertainty" deserves a special mention as one of the best literary stories written during the last decade. The author writes perfectly about the protagonist, Harold Swimmer, and his life. The story is a successful marriage of literary storytelling, sexuality, realism and surrealism in which all elements fit tightly together and form an intelligent and slipstreamish whole. The ending of this story demonstrates the author's ability to surprise his readers with sharp humour."The Key to Harry" is an intriguing piece of fiction, because it's simultaneously a story about Harry Houdini, his wife, Bess, and the meaning of life. It's an intelligent short story to readers who want to read well written stories."Underpass" is one of the best tunnel stories I've ever read, because the author's way of writing about what it feels like to explore strange places is refreshingly realistic yet fantastical. This story has interesting echoes of adventure stories.The intriguingly documentary "Death Trains of Durdensk" is a perfect combination of strange beauty and charming grotesqueness. The Death Trains that travel in the city are quite a sight to behold, because the passengers are corpses. This story is modern weird fiction at its utmost best and most imaginative."The Pleasures of Television" is also modern weird fiction at its best, because it gives readers a disturbingly brilliant glimpse into a world where people have televisions on their stomachs and have interfaces that allow them to connect to each other. This story will impress fans of modern weird fiction."Martworld" is a disturbing and satirical glimpse into a future world where supermarkets have grown into massive domes and have swallowed entire cities. The citizens never see the light of day, because they're not allowed to go outside. It was fascinating to read about Michael and his life, because he became fascinated by what was outside the dome. The Sex-Booths that can be used to have sex add a nice touch of weirdness to the story. (This excellent story has been co-written with Allen Ashley.)The interlinking stories about The Sleep Corporation were a pleasant surprise, because they reminded me slightly of one of the author's previous books, Entanglement. It was intriguing to read about the mysterious corporation and what they did to people, because they used dreams to their advantage and could make people do all kinds of things.The collaborations with Allen Ashley are excellent. Douglas Thompson and Allen Ashley have a similar kind of way of examining life and that's why their voices merge beautifully together in their collaborations.I have to mention that it was interesting to find out that Daniella Geary is a pseudonym used by Douglas Thompson, because I was instantly captivated by the stories written under this pseudonym when I first read them. I think that this revelation will interest many readers.Douglas Thompson writes fluently about the human condition and everything that's related to it. He writes about what makes us human, how we act in different situations, how we interact with each other and what we do to ourselves and our fellow human beings. He also writes about how we deal with changes in our lives and what happens when we face things that are unknown to us.Many of these stories have a complex and intricate structure that will please speculative fiction readers who are used to reading stories that have depth in them. They're filled with beautiful, grotesque, macabre and disturbing elements and effective imagery that will haunt readers.I appreciate the author's ability to write unflinchingly about human sexuality and its different forms. He doesn't shy away from sexuality, but fascinatingly intergrates it into his stories. His way of writing about sexuality feels bold, fresh and uninhibited.I think it's great that the author writes thought-provoking stories. Some of his stories are fascinatingly multi-layered and make you think about their contents. Because I've always enjoyed reading complex and multi-layered stories, I find the his stories extremely enjoyable.One of the best things about this collection is the high quality of the prose. Douglas Thompson writes excellent prose. His literary prose has plenty of substance and style that is lacking from many modern speculative fiction stories. He has his own unique writing style that is in equal parts observant, satirical, macabre and wistful.There's intriguingly dark humour in some of these stories. In my opinion, Douglas Thompson is one of the best authors when it comes to using dark and sharp humour in speculative fiction stories, because he uses humour in an inventive way and makes it part of the stories. He uses it sophisticatedly and sparingly.It was interesting for me to read this collection, because I hadn't read many of the stories. I was only familiar with a few of the stories.I like the cover image, because it's a sophisticatedly artistic and strange cover image that fits this collection and its contents perfectly. It echoes the strangeness of the stories.I give this short story collection full five stars on the scale from one to five stars. I was very impressed by it, because all of the stories were good and differed from each other.Douglas Thompson's The Sleep Corporation is one of the finest short story collections of the year. It contains different kinds of stories that range from horror to science fiction. If you're looking for a short story collection that will captivate and unsettle you, you'll love this collection, because it's a unique collection filled with thought-provoking, intelligent and beautifully written stories. About the Author
Julia has always made up stories in her head, and until recently she thought everyone else did too. She grew up in London, one of eight children, including a twin sister. She married Dave, a dentist, in 1989, and they have four daughters. After the birth of the second, Julia went freelance and decided to try her hand at writing. Her current novel was inspired by the allotments which her garden backs on to, and by growing her own produce.

By Becca's Books There are some who will say that it's far too early to be delving into the Christmas books already and I totally respect that, but for Christmas fanatics, it's much harder to hold back and not cave. That's exactly what I've done by the way, caved. But can you really blame me? Look at that cover! Look at the blurb! For me, it is never early to get the Christmas books under-way...In Make A Christmas Wish by Julia Williams, we're introduced to Livvy. Recently deceased, and not entirely sure of what it is that she's supposed to do while stuck on the car park she was struck down on, Livvy's confused. But slowly, fragment by fragment, bits of Livvy's memory begin to come back to her, and rather than listen to her spirit guide Malachi (who comes in the form of a black cat and seems to be very disapproving) Livvy is hell-bent on seeing her husband and son once more. Not only that, but she's determined to not let Adam's new girlfriend Emily worm her way into Livvy's spot in their family. No way!When I first met Livvy, I could tell she was going to be a fun, entertaining character, and boy was I right. She was exactly that. I think Julia Williams chose a premise for her novel that threw up endless possibilities for Livvy as a ghost, possibilities that yes, were far-fetched, but in fiction, there really are no limits. Julia told Livvy's story in the most beautiful of ways, taking the reader back to the past in order for us to watch where it all began to go wrong, and then into the future too, where Livvy could see how their life would have continued if she hadn't of died. Malachi the spirit guide was a character who I found absolutely hilarious. He was so full of wise words and advice for Livvy, but she was a very stubborn woman and refused to listen to a single word. It's odd because, at the beginning of A Christmas Wish I found myself taking sides with Livvy. As ridiculous as it sounds, I found I was imagining myself in Livvy's position and was able to see where she was coming from. How gut-wrenching would it be to watch your husband and son move forward in life without you? To watch your husband declare his love for another woman? To watch your son replace you as a mum? Heart-breaking probably doesn't even cut it. Livvy, to me, was fantastic. I loved her attitude and, when the haunting of her home began, I was excited to see just how far she would go. As I mentioned before, the possibilities were endless and Julia pulled it off amazingly.Of course, there were moments of soft tenderness within this novel too, it wasn't all fun and games, providing Make A Christmas Wish with that perfect combination of the two. There were times when Livvy would look upon her past with Adam and Joe, and feel regret for how she had handled things in the early days. It was so sad, and I couldn't help but to feel sad for the three of them. It truly put into perspective how different our futures can turn out to be...Alongside Livvy's character, we were able to meet Adam, Joe, and Emily too. When I was first introduced to Adam, as I mentioned previously, I'd already taken Livvy's side. I couldn't believe that he'd been messing around with another woman and felt angry towards him on Livvy's behalf. But, as the past began to become clear to me, I was able to understand more clearly why Adam had felt the way he had. It all began to make sense and I wondered how Adam would continue after Livvy's death. There's also their lovely, lovely son Joe, who I adored. Throughout the telling of this story, the author included snippets from Joe's Notebook, and these told us everything we needed to know. Joe wasn't very good with words, preferring to keep things simple in his mind, but within this notebook we're able to really see how Joe's feeling about everything that's happened. Joe was the only one, when things began to get scary, who knew it was Livvy. He tried numerous times to tell everyone that it was Mum, but no one would listen. Whenever Joe and Livvy were near one another, I couldn't help the sadness that washed over me. Mother and son, but in two different worlds. And then of course there is Emily, the new woman in Adam's life, who Livvy refuses to let wiggle into her family. The fun to be had between Emily and Livvy was endless, but it doesn't take long for realisation to hit Livvy, especially when Malachi shows her the not-so-very-comfortable future.I loved this book. It was magical but amusing at the same time. Very A Chrismtas Carol-esque, with the swapping of the past, present and future. The characters were all absolutely wonderful, bringing this story to life and making it all the more enjoyable for me. I really liked this story, set in England, Livvy is killed in an accident the same day she learns her husband is having an affair. Her spirit guide, Malachi, a black cat tells her she must make things right before she can get to heaven. She is stubborn and wants revenge against her husband and his girlfriend Emily, regardless what it does to her teen son Joe. Funny and sad comes through every page. She gets to visit Christmas past, future and current. I hope that Malachi comes back again next Christmas with a new book, this one was wonderful.

We start by meeting the ghost of 40 year old Livvy, who has just died in a supermarket carpark after being knocked down. Her husband Adam has just told her that he was having an affair with Emily. Livvy has unfinished business with her family and wants to contact them. Her son Joe can hear her straight away. Joe wants his mum back but he also has learned to love Emily. Eventually Livvy realises that she was far from perfect and everything was not Adam's fault. But is she too late.

I'm planning on staying for one month and this is really helpful. I found some people online who say this is the real deal, no fake descriptions in this guide!

It's looking a bit into the future because I definitely couldn't go for another year or so but this book made the country look even more enticing.
