President Virginia Belknap is one year into her second term when a NASA scientist discovers a new planet with an atmosphere similar to Earth. Embracing the event, Belknap turns a one-way mission to colonize this new world into her grand calling. It is the early 2030s-a time when Earth is struggling under the ill effects of climate change and a growing population, and the mission seizes the world's imagination. But as the cool-headed and competent Belknap starts to assemble experts from different nations to plan all aspects of this illustrious enterprise, including the new planet's constitution, religious conservatives-led by an earnest evangelical named Randall Reese-rise up in outrage and indignation. Reese and his followers see the plans put forth by Belknap's Mission Council as the blueprint for a Godless world and the tragic loss of what could be a second Eden. As the political machinations of Reese and others put the launch at risk, a broader and darker conspiracy takes shape that threatens to obliterate the ship, its crew, and even the new planet itself. Belknap, with her own life in danger, is forced to battle Reese, expose the conspiracy, and regain control of the mission before the launch window closes. But not before the forces at play spark a bonfire of deceit, murder, and domestic terrorism.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Planetary Thriller By TalLanky This is a terrific book. Good pacing, imaginative premise. Prescient, in a sense : many events described have since happened. Look at the most recent Kepler discoveries as but one example. Great characters : Devlin, Belechenko, female President Belknap. Would make a great movie. "Deep Impact" meets "Contact"? Susan Sarandon as the President? Or perhaps Kathy Bates? Also would be an excellent TV series, which could run long and offer some more character development. Good tech details in this book, as well as thought provoking nods to constitutional and other issues. Recommend!

Impressive Debut Novel By Conor Carlin From political intrigue to constitutional law to space-age technology, "Excessive Entanglement" is a fast-paced, well-written novel that explores how the power of ideas and ideals continues to be a source of inspiration and conflict.

I got all the thrills from this book that I get from reading those. I love plots that peal off in layers and this unfolds until it kind of takes your breath away. I really don't want to give any of it away. I will say, it stays with you long after you have put the book down. It will cause you to have interesting dialogue with your friends as you seek to understand the repercussions of what happens here. Beware, one you pick it up - you had better block a few hours - you are not going to put it down.
