It has caused me to understand myself much better, knowing that others have been bombarded also by a raw confrontation of the mind that. I must strip my mind naked and look into it.

Must have activity guide for parents By Jane Smith As a former teacher and a Mom I was impressed with “Kidding Around Town, Cool places to Grow Smart Brains”. The book is far more than a guide to places to entertain your child in the Dallas Forth Worth area. The underlying premise is that activities with your child can be both entertaining and educational. This book is a guide to understand how to choose and plan activities that will enrich your child’s life, stimulate their intellect and create lasting memories of the interaction. Each venue’s entry is complete with directions including phone and website, tips and developmentally based suggestions on how to enjoy the experience. The cartoon hints on visual and verbal clues to knowing when it’s time to go home are priceless. Catherine hits the right note blending informative, educational and the practical into a must have guidebook to planning and enjoying outings with children. Ms. Cates’ guide is an excellent complement and extension to the timely listing of activities on her website, AroundTownKids.com. It’s well worth the investment to buy either the Kindle or paper version to have as a reference. Congratulations for a well thought out guide that is appropriate for parents of children of all ages.

Bates It's been a while since my children were little, and now I have two great-nephews (ages 2 and 3). In today's world, even at their young age, they are getting addicted to electronics; so I love getting them out to explore the world. "Kidding Around Town: Cool Places to Grow Smart Brains" has been an amazing resource when it comes to finding fun activities to do with them. This past weekend, we visited the Mesquite Rodeo and The Children's Aquarium at Fair Park. I haven't been to either in years and was reminded of them when looking through my book. Before each activity, I quickly read over the Age Appropriate Activities for Twos and Threes section. The book has such great ideas of how to make every event a fun and educational experience. My nephews loved touching the sting rays and seeing the albino alligator at the aquarium, and thought the calves and horses at the rodeo were the coolest things ever! They have seen them all on TV; ;but the expression on their faces when seeing and touching them in real life was priceless! Thank you Catherine Cates for providing such an awesome tool for DFW families to use!!!

The Innocents Abroad, or The New Pilgrims' Progress is a travel book by American author Mark Twain published in 1869 which humorously chronicles what Twain called his "Great Pleasure Excursion" on board the chartered vessel Quaker City (formerly USS Quaker City) through Europe and the Holy Land with a group of American travelers in 1867. It was the best-selling of Twain's works during his lifetime, as well as being one of the best-selling travel books of all time.

The Innocents Abroad (Annotated), by Mark Twain

Review (in full The Innocents Abroad; or, The New Pilgrims' Progress) A humorous travel narrative by Mark Twain, published in 1869 and based on Twain's letters to newspapers about his 1867 steamship voyage to Europe, Egypt, and the Holy Land. The Innocents Abroad sharply satirized tourists who learn what they should see and feel by reading guidebooks. Assuming the role of a keen-eyed, shrewd Westerner, Twain was refreshingly honest and vivid in describing foreign scenes and his reactions to them. He alternated serious passages--history, statistics, description, explanation, argumentation--with risible ones. The humor itself was varied, sometimes in the vein of the Southwestern yarn spinners, sometimes in that of contemporaneous humorists such as Artemus Ward and Josh Billings, who chiefly used burlesque and parody and other verbal devices. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

From the Publisher 14 1.5-hour cassettes

From the Inside Flap The Innocents Abroad is one of the most prominent and influential travel books ever written about Europe and the Holy Land. In it, the collision of the American ?New Barbarians? and the European ?Old World? provides much comic fodder for Mark Twain?and a remarkably perceptive lens on the human condition. Gleefully skewering the ethos of American tourism in Europe, Twain?s lively satire ultimately reveals just what it is that defines cultural identity. As Twain himself points out, ?Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one?s lifetime.? And Jane Jacobs observes in her Introduction, ?If the reader is American, he may also find himself on a tour of his own psyche.?

Sam Clemens (1835-1910) wrote Huckleberry Finn in 1885 which has been acclaimed as our greatest American novel. Lesser known are his wonderful travelogues: "Roughing It' "Following the Equator"; "Life on the Mississippi and "The Innocents Abroad" published in 1869. This book is worth reading even 140 years after its publication. Twain style is a joy to read for he was a born storyteller and communicates his thoughts well on the page. Twain was a reporter who joined the six month expedition to Europe and the Middle East on board the steamer "Quaker City." The pleasure tour hadbeen organized by the famous pastor Henry Ward Beecher (sibling of Harriet Ward Beecher) and Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. Neither of these notable made the trip citing other obligations. Twain roomed with a young man from Elmira New York. He would later visit Elmira and meet his friend's sister Olivia. She would become his wife and the mother of the couple's three daughters. The Innocents Abroad is a long book of 400,000 words covering over 500 densely written pages. Twain takes a sardonic, humorous view of European art as he guides us through the Louvre, Florence Italy and Rome. We visit London, Paris and meet with Czar Alexander II in the Crimea. Twain had a keen reporter's eye and a humorist's ability to paint word pictures of his fellow passengers, tour guides and natives of the fascinating cities and countries he visited on a busy itinerary. As a Presbyterian pastor I found the most interesting part of the book dealt with Twain's tour of Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece and Israel. He was upset by the filth, disease and cruelty he saw in the land of Moses and Jesus Christ. Despite all his asides and digressions the observant reader can gain a good picture of what these places were like in 1869. Twain was an agnostic but knew his Bible. Mark Twain was our greatest author. In this fine book you will get to know this fascinating man better as he shares his globe trotting journey with his readers.

By A Customer Ok, maybe that is a minor overstatement, but this is one hilarous book, to be read by people who have travelled, who plan to travel, and generally, people who want to laugh. A lot.The book is also surprising for its timeless points about the journeying of certain upper white, middle class people going on a grand tour of Europe. I frequently had to remind myself that it was written in 1869 because his observations and the behavior of his shipmates is so close to the way people I studied abroad with acted-only a few years ago.Twain also puts those "cosmopolitan" people who claim to have traveled, but don't know anything about any place they have been but and just like to lord it over everyone else that they have "travelled" and you have not.Reading this book is like listening to a very wise, old man tell you about his adventures. Its not like a book, more like one long conversation. Twain takes nothing seriously-not himself, his fellow travelers or the places they visit. The words are another adventure-sometimes, you know he is setting you up for something, other times he is serious for a while, then you end up in the middle of a joke.I know this is against the rules, but the other posters who don't like this book-don't be so serious and p.c. all the time. Twain is making humorous observations, at a time when a different standard was acceptable. Not to mention, he does manage to get a few zingers in there about what people are willing to accept and what they do not.You will laugh yourself silly and want to book a trip-not to Europe, just to anywhere, after reading this book.

Having successfully concluded the upheaval of the War Between the States, the people of the USA, while bruised, felt confident. Their sense of righteousness was enhanced - they'd quelled a rebellion and freed slaves. Some took that attitude to other lands. The 1867 SS Quaker City excursion to Europe and the "Holy Land" was but one of those forays. It was special in that it carried one of the more discerning observers the United States had produced - Sam Clemens of Hannibal, Missouri and points West. He was to post letters to the San Francisco newspaper "Daily Alta California" describing the journey. The trip and the account opened Clemens' eyes and those of his readers over numerous legends. In Clemens' baggage was a strong religious sense imparted by his mother, Jane. This cargo was balanced by Twain's more worldly experience on the Mississippi and his life in the mining communities in the West. When he crossed the gangplank to board the steamer, his gaze was sceptical and his pen ascerbic. His portrayal of the Quaker City's passengers began as they traversed the Atlantic, but it is his depiction of "foreigners" in their homelands that both shocks and enlightens. Starting with the Azores stopover, Clemens' observations of the islands are a tribute to their charms. Of the people, however, he has little positive to impart. They are dirty, noisy, conniving and devious. In general, they're "not American".The use of the "innocents" is exemplified by Twain's description of contact with the Europeans. Educated in the minimal language training of the day, the travellers struggled to impart their wishes in French shops and restaurants. Twain seems to lay responsibility for this on the French "failure to understand their own language", but his description of the exchanges makes it clear where the problem lay. There was another side to this coin, however. Europeans were caught up in their own affairs. The United States was a remote and unknown element to them - "they'd had a war with somebody recently". Twain notes his shipmates were even then tinged with the arrogance that would fully blossom later. Respect for "tradition" had a variety of expressions in the "Quaker City" passengers. Twain depicts them all with delightful detachment. As the ship made landfall in Mediterranean ports, Clemens and his comrades visit the "standard" tourist haunts. Paris is a must, Genoa is a treat, Rome is a maze of cathedrals and art galleries. Quickly disenchanted with "guides" he renames them all "Ferguson" and rebukes them at every opportunity. Michaelangelo seems so pervasive in Rome that the Pilgrims ask if Greek or Egyptian artefacts are his work - to the consternation of the "Ferguson" of the day. Twain's flexibility and ability to adapt to events leads some of the "innocents" to take the train from Rome to Naples - a city under quarantine. While the "Quaker City" lies still in the harbour, Twain and his companions tour the city and visit Vesuvius. A similar ploy works in Greece. It is in the "Holy Land" that Clemens' descriptive powers and distrust of "authorities" flowers most brilliantly. Like many of his fellow passengers, he's been subjected to many tales from "Scripture" and a spate of earlier travel writers in Palestine. Unable to criticise the Bible outright, he lets the words speak for themselves, allowing logic and common sense to question dogma. The effusive travel writers, who had insisted Palestine was a "paradise" are brought out in contrast with Twain's observations of the barren desolation that was the Levant. He is scathing in his criticism of people who fabricate conditions there in order to sell their books. His veracity, of course, nearly had the opposite effect. "The Innocents Abroad" manuscript was originally rejected by Twain's publisher.Sam Clemens' reputation was "made" with this book. It touched on many aspects of how people in the United States viewed themselves and the world. The subtle, but incisive, comments on tradition and legend were seeds finding fertile ground in a dynamic nation setting the practical foremost. "Innocents" was a challenge to dogmas and a paean to the sense of "realism" that permeated the post-Civil War era. The "Romantic" Era, still evident in mid-19th Century in the earlier accounts of Palestine, would be whisked aside. "Innocents" would be instrumental in that sweeping it away. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

The storytelling is well put together and keeps you wondering what's gonna happen next and in suspense. Though is fiction I find it very educational when it comes to Navy and Air Force backgrounds. I haven't finish reading it yet; I couldn't wait to recomend it to others and might have to come back later and update my review once I get to the end.

Unique storytelling, innovative plot By Elle Bor If you think this book is just another run of the mill military-based storyline based on the cover, you are wrong. Just when you are certain his narrating style will be rigid and only caters to those who seek this mode of writing, he gets you with the emotional appeal of the main character, Bill Barber. I must admit, I am a Nicholas Sparks, Cecelia Ahern reader but this book had me reading in haste, hoping to know what is going to happen next. Hard to explain how good it is without spoilers. And in the end, you'll want a book 2

By utilizing writing he unlocks his deepest emotions of happiness and horror. A therapy of sorts releasing the bottled pressure in his mind. Pages from his personal journal never intended for print. Igniting minds with written word in order to simply extinguish his own. Duane has a Bachelors of Science in Computer Forensics and an Associates in Business. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 2000 to 2005 at Marine Corps Base Hawaii with a tour to the sandbox called Iraq in 2003. Currently he works in the private sector. His original publisher was deployed to Iraq and is no longer active as this is his second printing of this title. From the Ashes of the past was originally written as recreation, pages in a journal, letters to his family, and little poems for framed gifts. His therapist actually encouraged him to compile a book. One of the first copies printed was actually given to her. She uses it as recommended reading for other patients. His second title soon to be released was almost entirely written during his early period of recovery. Today he only wishes to help just one person who shares the same adventures as he. http://duanekevin.wix.com/books

I recently started reading this book of poems entitled A Moment of Light, and once I started, I could not put it down. From the first page, I felt an immediate feeling of calmness and a relief of tension. The author, Richie Landon Richards, has managed to capture his experiences and to word it in a way which mirrors and explains one’s own thoughts about the matter at hand. In this fantastic artwork, Richie has the rare ability of expressing spiritual experiences in such a way that people like us can relate to it and find common grounds with it. But in addition to that, he also possesses the necessary wisdom with which to speak authoritatively and give confident explanations to the experiences we have in life. Amid all the wisdom included in this work, one also discovers simplicity and straightforwardness. Richie pens his poetry in such a way as to appeal to readers of every age and background. And at the same time, I also find his work comprehensive and complete. He covers several areas of everyday experiences – definitely some that you might find resonance with. Amongst others, he addresses the feeling of isolation and depression and our great task of shining our light where we are. Each of these life experiences demand deep thinking and emotional feelings, and all can easily remain unexplained if not addressed by someone that knows life inside out. I strongly recommend Richie’s poems. It will be a great addition to your collection and an excellent read during your quiet time of rest. Join Richie as he takes you on a journey through life and its experiences, and you will surely emerge more knowledgeable, more satisfied, and therefore more at rest about the personal experiences you face.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Love can be joy, or our undoing! That has not changed since this novel was written. By Stancy Merwin I read this book because I read that the movie RHAPSODY was loosely based on it, and I did enjoy that melodramatic film. The film is really not much like the book, except that in both, the hero has an obsessive love for the heroine, Louise, that proves very dangerous for him. I will say this: the movie RHAPSODY is more "FUN" than the novel MAURICE GUEST. Love is painful at times, and what is it really, anyway? That is part of what the novel is about. This is as good a book about jealousy and infatuation as you will find, certainly for its era, and there are different ways one could look at the hero, Maurice, and his "issues." The music provides more of a backdrop than it does in the film (in the film the music is "in your face" and a real high point), but it is a good backdrop. Richardson is a descriptive, flowery writer--very good, but if you are looking for a "quick read," this is not the book for you. If you want a succinct writer, try Henning Mankell, for one!If you have the time, though, and like novels with European settings that show the culture, values and tastes of an earlier time--and if you like detailed personality studies--then you will enjoy MAURICE GUEST. I did. This would be a good book to get into on a long train or plane ride, when you want to escape to an earlier time and ponder the mystery of love.

A forgotten masterpiece By Slioch `Maurice Guest' is the first novel of Henry Handel Richardson, the pseudonym of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson (1870 - 1946). Born in Australia, her later novel `The Fortunes of Richard Mahony' is based on the life and mental decline of her father. In 1888, several years after her father's death, her mother took Ethel and her younger sister to Leipzig where Ethel studied music, and her time there formed the background for `Maurice Guest' which was published in 1908. She later lived in England, latterly in Sussex, and apart from a visit when researching `Richard Mahony', she did not return to live in Australia.Henry Handel Richardson was Australian by birth, and wrote `Maurice Guest' while living in England, but this great novel is fundamentally in the European tradition. Its theme of obsessional love has led to comparison with Madame Bovary, but Dostoesvsky is the more obvious influence. Unlike many English novels of its time, the author's voice never appears, and different viewpoints are beautifully managed so that conflicting views of characters each have credibility. It is a study of obsession, without moral conclusions. The style is incremental, the writing subtle and intelligent.Maurice is neither a heroic nor an anti-heroic figure, but as the novel progresses, he becomes more and more credible - even frighteningly so towards the end. His obsession with Louise Dufrayer, and her relationship with him, are brilliantly portrayed. When I reached the end of this long novel, I felt that I had read a truly great work of literature, and I was amazed and sad that both book and author are now virtually unknown.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I LOVE H H RICHARDSON By P. J. WILLIAMS I read, and studied this author's , "The Fortunes of Richard Mahoney" (pronounced "Mahnee") fifty-four years ago, and loved it. My wife urged me to read "Maurice Guest" many years ago, and I have finally done it. It is magnificent, and I consider H H Richardson to be Australia's finest author. I find a lot of George Eliot in it. Her command of language is wonderful, and she embarks on sweeping, powerful descriptions, confident in her ability to hold an intelligent reader. She breaks all today's rules on the way. Do not enter here if you afraid of adverbs, universal point of view and powerful, passionate description. To use that over-used word again, I repeat that it is passionate. There are ironic characters worthy of Jane Austen, and the central female character is a kind of Heathcliff. The depiction of Leipzig Conservatorium of the 1890s is amazingly contemporary. The behaviour of the students, the academic infighting, the ebb and flow of artistic fashions are all with us today. It is one of the rare books about music which rings true and from the 1960s to the present I will vouch for its accuracy. Far from afflicting us with conventional Victorian values, Richardson shows us the demi-monde which always existed alongside. Not the least interesting aspect is the issue of English as opposed to Continental views - on music, art, beauty. Some of these arguments are visited a number of times, but always with a different aspect to deepen our understanding. Louise is the central character - a peculiar creature, irresistibly attractive but a law unto herself. Richardson's description of Maurice's infatuation is uncanny in its passion (there's that word again). It is sensuous writing of the highest order. Is beauty a gift? Or is it a talent? Is decent Maurice a lovelorn swain, or a manipulative schemer?Everything that happens in this book I feel to be believable and true. I've seen it and I have no doubt H H Richardson did too. She just happened to write a great book about it.

To stroll the streets of Cuba—to hear the rumbling engines of its 1950s automobiles, the jazz, and the rumba—is to travel back in time, to see jaw-dropping natural beauty and the artists, musicians, and folklore of legends. With access few others have had, Cynthia Carris Alonso has spent twenty years capturing Havana’s crumbling, baroque splendor. Her photographs celebrate the dreamy palette of Cuba—salmon pink, sky blue, apricot, aqua green—and reveal the contrast between patina homes; peeling stucco apartments; and the great Capitol Building, Havana Cathedral, and Hotel Nacional. With Passage to Cuba, Alonso opens the doors to an exquisite but rarely seen place. So take a stroll along the Malecón seawall; marvel at the dancers with their colorful, ornate costumes; lose yourself in José Fuster’s spellbinding mosaic designs; or simply relax in the warm sun of the countryside, where the calm, aging fishermen spend their days and where Ernest Hemingway wrote The Old Man and the Sea.This keepsake volume is a breathtaking tribute to a land with a complex history. It’s a lush, vibrant collection of photographs and a road map to use to embark on a remarkable odyssey.

She captured rare views of authentic Cuban culture: innovative artisans and vibrant musicians, vintage cars and buildings in faded glory, colorful characters whose relative isolation hasn’t dampened their spirits. It’s an insightful survey of a land with a rich but enigmatic past and a promising future.” —Jack Crager, Senior Contributing Editor, American Photo“Cynthia Carris Alonso’s poetic images are word pictures chock-full of Caribbean color and light that reveal a passionate people whose magical spirit appears to sing and dance before her very lens.” —Patricia Pedraza, Senior Producer, CNN en Español“Passage to Cuba takes the viewer on a visual journey to a land that time forgot. From musicians to architecture, Alonso’s images document the complex culture with undiluted sincerity.” —James K. Colton, Editor at Large, ZUMA Press, and Former Director of Photography, Sports Illustrated, Sipa Press, and Newsweek“Cynthia is able to manifest in photography the same soulfulness that one hears in the music, moves in the dance, feels in the warmth of sunlight on skin, and resides so deeply Cuba.” —Rachel Faro, Grammy Award–Nominated Record Producer, President, Ashe Records, and Cuban Music Specialist“Cynthia Carris Alonso has a rare photographic eye, one that captures not only Cuba’s beauty, but also the soul of its special culture. In Cynthia’s photographs, you’ll see why Cuba inspires so much passion and love.” —Sandra Levinson, Executive Director, the Center for Cuban Studies/Cuban Art Space, New York City

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Good photos but not great By Karenv This is a nice picture book of Cuba that I think will appeal to people who can't get there. I've spent time in Cuba and the photos, to me, are more like a photo album of my time there. If the subject matter wasn't Cuba, a place off limits to so many people, I don't think it would have much appeal. The photography is good but nothing special. Its kind of emotion-less. The book does show what Cuba looks like which is a really nice reminder of my month there.

Words cannot convey the power of Caris-Alonso's powerful images. She has taken us into the heart, soul, and spirit of Cuba, frozen in amber and captured by this talented artist.

By kathleen d gallagher, M.A., poet and professor of literature, University of Akron Activist, performer, poet, and educator El Habib Louai's words are classic and modern! Poetic shades of Whitman and Ginsberg blend with his unique and creatively illustrious poems reflecting a modern day rebel. His poems attempt to reconcile the dichotomies of literary freedom, political expression, and diversity found in his many travels across the world. To read Louai’s work is to find oneself on an unplanned journey that becomes an intellectually invigorating ride across time and place.

Excerpts ...................... December 2014 started with a break up and ended with a death. Part Time Lover, Full Time Friend At some point a few years ago, I realised that life just wasn’t as good as it could be. I lived in a city that I didn’t like, a country I wasn’t sure if I liked and had a job that I definitely didn’t like. There was only one thing I was sure of and that was Martin. So with his support, I quit my teaching job - because I hated the education system, how much I worked and how much my friends worked. This was not life. I became a vegetarian chef and finally Mondays became something I didn’t dread. However, my mood in autumn and winter was still always low. I was also low on Vitamin D and I had developed a strange nervous energy which made it almost impossible to relax. I worked or exercised to distract myself until I was exhausted, just so I could sleep. The air around me seemed stifling. The dark British skies made the air heavy and every time I would lie down, I could feel it weighing on my chest. I needed to change more of my life. The problem was that Martin loved his job, his friends and his hobbies. He liked it here in this city and he wanted to settle, buy a house and develop his career. I started to wonder if he would mind if I left. Would he even notice if I was gone? ................................... Hardly a day went by when the word “Shantaram” wasn’t uttered under my breath: Bangladeshi cultural norms have it that I am unable to wear a skirt or a tank top without being seen as a whore and that when living in most areas outside of Dhaka, I am expected to conform to the country’s traditional attire for women: Shantaram. I am unable to go for runs in the street because it is culturally inappropriate for women to do so: Shantaram. I sit in on meetings with new business associates who refuse to look me in the eye and only choose to address my male counterpart: Shantaram. I get into a car accident and have bricks thrown at me because this country believes in vigilante justice as a means of compensating for their poor legal system: Shantaram. I am stared at with every step I take, everywhere I go, because I am a foreigner and because staring is not considered impolite in Bangladesh: Shantaram. ...................

This book really give you the wanderlust and opens your eyes to so many varying lifestyles- there really are so many opportunities around the world! What i loved most about this was that it is a collection of stories, not just one persons viewpoint. As such, it makes an awesome bedtime read as the chapters and stories are easily digestible and bite-size. Better yet, they all have a slightly different style and emphasis; so there is no chance of getting bored or finding the writing predictable. Each story has its own learning points and conclusions and this array of opinions is what makes the book so great. A real resource for anyone craving a little more out of life.

Great book for young people who move abroad By Raul I really like this book, it was well-written and I enjoyed reading about the adventures of young people. I think there are many insights in this book if you are planning to go abroad. I think that moving to another country can be a great experience but I also think that it can be hard sometimes that is why it is good to read a couple of books before moving to another country, especially if you are shy or don't know if it will work very good for you. If this is the case, this book may help you and give you the confidence to succeed abroad.
