Fabulous handbook on the history of Rome By Jo Grafford What a fabulous handbook on the history of Rome and it's resounding impact on our world today. Ever wonder where the idea of "innocent till proven guilty" came from? Or compensation for wrongs done (punitive damages)? Trial by jury? Each of these principles are rooted in Roman Law, and many Westernized governments have modeled their legal systems after it. Then there is Rome's tremendous influence on language and culture. We've borrowed quite a few Latin phrases in our modern English: carpe diem, et cetera, per capita, verbatim, terra firma, and the list goes on. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially since I just returned from a trip to Rome. Highly recommend for students, history buffs, and travelers!

Many history lessons to be learned and how Rome have it's impact on our world. Very good read, it keeps me to show off my interests to go to Rome. Someday! I will go to that place.

I have watched several shows that feature Roman these practices, but was never really sure if they were indeed true. After reading this book, I was able to confirm that most of them are. The book talks about the how Romans used to practice law and which ones still carry over today. It was interesting to note that they were the ones who started the concept of trial by jury. The book also talked about the languages, architecture, and structures being used today that are largely due to the influence of the Romans. I was surprised that the concept of apartments started even back then. It was interesting.
