It seems comprehensive and I like that it details summer and winter hours for the various attractions. What surprises me is that many accommodations are in the L90-L150 range which I consider not to be "budget". It does list some hostels but I would have expected many more. Of course google/tripadvisor/hostels type websites can be used for detailed research.

"Lofty Whims of Grace" is an invitation to the whispers of the spirit. It is an ode to the spirit of life. An anthology of visionary poetry that induces harmony within your mind, body, and soul. With the use of imagery and words, you will be immersed as one with nature, the universe, and further into the unknown. Life is a beautiful, infinite mystery. These poems are a humble attempt to share this with you. Through a delicate equipoise beyond duality, all is connected. Into this union is benevolent presence of consciousness, heart, and soul beckoning transcendence. It is here where the outer world is a direct reflection of our inner world. Now in this moment, Beauty, Love, and Joy are a choice for our creation. In nourishing a balance of light and dark within, this intended vision authentically emerges. These words merely offer an expression of the perpetual awe within existence. With gratitude, may these verses wishfully inspire awe in you. Welcome to this journey of wonder.

The impressions and thoughts that David conveys will elicit your own wonderment and exploration into the realms of what lays right before our senses, but is often overlooked. This is a great book of poems to have at your bedside or favorite chair to have at your disposal to open to any page and read. The depth of the material is such that meaning is subjective and invites you to explore questions, answers, and non-meaning. Like all great poetry it leaves you thinking rather than telling you what is. The inclusion of landscape photography ties you to reality while your mind explores the outer and inner realms.

Return to the shores of Gitche Gumee and sing the Song of Hiawatha. "Out of childhood into manhood Now had grown my Hiawatha, Skilled in all the craft of hunters, Learned in all the lore of old men, In all youthful sports and pastimes, In all manly arts and labors. Swift of foot was Hiawatha; He could shoot an arrow from him, And run forward with such fleetness, That the arrow fell behind him! Strong of arm was Hiawatha; He could shoot ten arrows upward, Shoot them with such strength and swiftness, That the tenth had left the bow-string Ere the first to earth had fallen!"--Longfellow

The Song of Hiawatha: With linked Table of Contents, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

From School Library Journal Grade 3 Up-This picture-book version of the American epic is sure to elicit a wide spectrum of reactions. In contrast to Susan Jeffers's Hiawatha (Dial, 1983), a treatment that covers the legendary Native American leader's childhood, Early provides a broader scope. In spreads containing text on the left and an illustration on the right, she begins with Gitche Manito's descent to Earth to call the hostile tribes to peace and to promise a prophet to lead them. Excerpts from the poem describe Hiawatha's maternal line and cosmic paternity, his early life with old Nokomis, his prowess as a hunter, the confrontation with his father (the West-Wind), and his marriage to Minnehaha. Brief bits of prose stand in for the missing stanzas. The paintings are decorative in nature, a quality emphasized by the quiltlike borders on each page. The scenes have a staged, static quality, with carefully placed, furry woodland creatures; stylized figures; and mystical backdrops. While this approach is not out of sync with the poem's predictable cadences, it is not for all tastes. A historical note discusses the choices Longfellow made in designing his composite character, as well as his sources. Most libraries will want to purchase this title in order to offer a fresh and somewhat expanded, illustrated version of the classic to a new generation.Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public Library Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. About the Author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807 in Portland, Maine, and he became a professor of modern languages at Harvard. His most famous narrative poems include The Song of Hiawatha, Paul Reveres Ride, "The Village Blacksmith," "The Wreck of the Hesperus." From his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne, Longfellow got a brief outline of a story from which he composed one of his most favorite poems, 'Evangeline'. The original story had Evangeline wandering about New England in search of her bridegroom. One of the first poets to take the landscape and stories of North America as his subjects, Longfellow became immensely popular all over the world, and he was the first American commemorated in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey. He was given honorary degrees at the great universities of Oxford and Cambridge, invited to Windsor by Queen Victoria, and called by request upon the Prince of Wales. He was also chosen a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Spanish Academy. He died on March 24, 1882.Casil is a 1984 graduate of the Clarion Science Fiction Writers Workshop at MSU. Every time I hear the wonderful rhyme of HenryWadsworth Longfellow, I begin to think of what this land was like before the Europeans conquered it. It is a wonderful tale of peace between nations and a great book to read to children.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly nice By Benedict I liked this piece quite a bit. Hiawatha was loosely based on a real Indian chief of the 1500's. Walt Disney has done this poem a great disservice by making it possibly one of his silliest characters ever. Longfellow had read a history of Hiawatha and then wrote a grand poem. It surprised me but this poem really is in the stream of Beowolf and Gilgamesh. This poem does not have the passion I found in Beowolf and Gilgamesh, but it reminds me of what it was like to live on this continent before the Europeans arrived, and long afterwards. The power of nature through its spiritual and apparent manifestations is key. In this poem all nature talks. Ben

Marvelous Introduction to Longfellow's Mythic Hero By Plume45 This abridged version from Handprint Books offers superb illustra- tions by Margaret Early—wed to the incomparable free verse poetry of Longfellow. Each two-page spread presents a Chapter heading, the poem and a brief “linking text” which unites the selections which facilitate the comprehension and narrative continuity of a young reader. On the opposing page is a marvelous depiction of the scene or tone of the written words across from it. The book concludes with an Historical Note by the illustrator. A true marriage of the classical beauty of Longfellow tone poems with breathtaking artistic renderings. A marvelous introduction to the complete tale of a Native American warrior hero.

Ebook PDF Barbarossa, by Conrad von Bolanden

Towards the middle of the 12th century, Milan had conquered for herself a powerful supremacy throughout all of Upper Italy, and with the exception of the proud Genoa and the maritime Venetian republic, all the cities of Lombardy acknowledged her sovereignty. Lodi, Pavia, and some few of the neighboring towns, had made bold attempts to assert their rights, but all their efforts were unsuccessful; and had only resulted in riveting more tightly their fetters, while the pride of the Milanese, and a desire for more extended power, increased in proportion to the failing strength of their adversaries... This historical novel of Conrad v. Bolanden plays in the Northern Italy of the 12th century under the reign of the German Emperor Frederic Barbarossa.

A collection of love poems - Ambrosia - for the soul. This is not a collection of sappy love poetry about how wonderful someone is. Sure, there is some of that, but this collection goes deeper, to all the shades of grey, and touches all the seasons of love. There is poetry about being in love, about loving someone from afar, about losing love, about new love, and about old love. Enjoy these poems in a warm bubble bath or cozied up by the fireplace.

By Martin Edwards What I like about this book of love related poetry, is that not only do the poems have depth and meaning, but that like all writing that stands the test of time, it has something for every reader; that many of the poems in this collection, while clearly written based on the author's own experiences and feelings, expressed so well here, will give voice also to similar feelings each reader has experienced, but may not be able to voice as well as this author. It certainly also gives poetic evidence for the validity of the old adage: "Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all."

Lady Barbarina: The Siege of London ; an International Episode, and Other Tales, by Henry James

About the Author Henry James was an American author, essayist, and critic known for his contributions to both literary criticism and the realist movement, which focused on presenting everyday life as it actually was. In creating realistic portrayals of life and society, James often included elements of social and political commentary in his works, notably his depiction of the feminist movement in The Bostonians, and the exploration of culture clash between America and Europe in Daisy Miller. James s best known works also include The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors, and the novella The Turn of the Screw. American by birth, James spent much of his time in England and eventually moved to London. He became a British subject just before his death in 1916.

He actually possessed wittiness here. The International Affair presages Woodehouse. The series of letters which tell a story are an ingenious device. In The Point of View one of the correspondents makes this observation about Americans. "They've a novelist with pretentions to literature who writes about the chase for the husband and the adventures of the rich Americans in our corrupt old Europe." My only disappointment is that the size of the volume is rather bulky, and it has archival first edition print.

The size is convenience for tossing in your purse and forgetting about it. Lots of great suggestions, and we appreciated knowing the business hours and admission prices of things ahead of time.Despite this being a 2015 printing, some of the information was already outdated, mainly the business hours and admission prices. Not a big deal, and it's to be expected when it comes to a printed book. In one case, the name of a restaurant was wrong and the incorrect name was actually a restaurant in another city? We weren't sure what happened there but we stopped in anyway and had a great meal.Overall, this book was the perfect addition to our trip and we used it religiously when deciding what to do each day. So religious about it were we that we started calling it "the bible."So glad I bought this! It's not an exhaustive list of all there is to each town, but it's a great start and you won't be disappointed by the suggestions.

When I read a travel book I want to learn about all the things there are to do in a place, and to dig beyond the surface. However way too much of this thin book is spent giving lavish descriptions of colors and trying to set a mood as if it were a novel - doing things that for travel info, a single picture does a much better job with. It really gives you the sense that there's nothing to do in Newfoundland. It may be true, I don't know because I haven't been yet, but I find it hard to believe the place is as uninteresting as this book makes it seem.

Best Ebook Venusberg: A Novel, by Anthony Powell

Written from a vantage point both high and deliberately narrow, the early novels of the late British master Anthony Powell nevertheless deal in the universal themes that would become a substantial part of his oeuvre: pride, greed, and the strange drivers of human behavior. More explorations of relationships and vanity than plot-driven narratives, Powell’s early works reveal the stirrings of the unequaled style, ear for dialogue, and eye for irony that would reach their caustic peak in his epic, A Dance to the Music of Time.Powell’s sophomore novel, Venusberg, follows journalist Lushington as he leaves behind his unrequited love in England and travels by boat to an unnamed Baltic state. Awash in a marvelously odd assortment of counts and ladies navigating a multicultural, elegant, and politically precarious social scene, Lushington becomes infatuated with his very own, very foreign Venus. An action-packed literary precursor to Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, Venusberg is replete with assassins and Nazis, loose countesses and misunderstandings, fatal accidents and social comedy. But beyond its humor, this early installment in Powell’s literary canon will offer readers a welcome window onto the mind of a great artist learning his craft.

Venusberg: A Novel, by Anthony Powell

Review “Elegantly casual and scandalously funny. . . . Venusberg, I once read somewhere, is a satire on totalitarian government. That’s as good a handle for it as any. Yet it concentrates much more on men and women than upon the laws that govern them. . . . In some of the best light dialogue of our time, Powell makes clear the difference between feverish sophistication and true worldliness.” (Charles Poore New York Times)“A brilliant picture of diplomatic and less exalted society in a little Baltic State. Mr. Powell’s dialogue and comments are crisp, shrewd, and satirical, and his second novel is a worthy successor to Afternoon Men.” (Spectator (UK))“Powell’s novels bite deep, but only to reveal that even at our most foolish we are all in it together.” (Leo Lerman New York Times)“Looking back at Powell’s earlier novels, it is possible to see him discovering there how to use his razor-sharp satirical sense until it is purged of bitterness and extravagance.” (Elizabeth Janeway New York Times)“In this era of YouTube, cell phones, and Snapchat, the possibility of real strangeness or feelings of isolation in foreign travel are almost impossible to recover, in addition to the sometimes unpleasant colonial overtones some such novels evoke. In Venusberg, however, the charm and humor of such a setting comes through, even as Powell searches after deeper themes. . . . Venusberg is valuable because we see Powell working out perspectives that would later form the basis of Dance.” (Gerald J. Russello The Millions)

About the Author ANTHONY POWELL was born in 1905. After working in publishing and as a scriptwriter, he began to write for the Daily Telegraph in the mid-1930s. He served in the army during World War II and subsequently became the fiction reviewer on the TLS. Next came five years as literary editor of Punch. He was appointed a Companion of Honour in 1988. In addition to the twelve-novel sequence, A Dance to the Music of Time, Anthony Powell was the author of seven other novels, and four volumes of memoirs, To Keep the Ball Rolling. He died in March 2000.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Ehhhhh By Patrick Odaniel I love A Dance to the Music of Time and sought out this early work of Powell's in the hope of recapturing the sparkling repartee and zest for living that makes Dance so delectable. Better luck next time. This slight (150 page) farce concerns a young British wastrel, Lushington (get it?), who, for lack of anything better, goes off on a slow steamer to a Northern Baltic country that has been recently liberated after the Great War (think, oh, I don't know, Latvia or something). There on the boat he meets most of the novel's principal characters: a down-at-the-heels count, a fake fat count who sells soap and a vamp countess. These tired drawing-room caricatures, which must have been cliched at the time, spend the rest of the novel wasting away and finally relieving the reader by dying from consumption, confrontation, revolution or irresolution (except for the fat count who steams back to England in the interest of soaping up the British Isles). There's a tiresome party or two with the kind of conversation that makes one wonder how did Powell become the writer who created those wonderful, festive scenes in Dance. I'm thinking he had some kind of literary equivalent of Paul's journey on the road to Damascus (or at least became a born-again writer). In any event, this book is strictly for hardcore Powellians (or, perhaps, pole-cats) interested in the great writer's roots and willing to forgive a youthful transgression into the wilds of stuffy, Northern European aristocracy.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A very great read! By JTR I read this book right after Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, and this book, about half the length of the other, is far superior. I believe this was only Powell's second novel. A funny, confused protagonist named Lushington finds himself in a small former Soviet colony of beautiful society ladies, with ultimately tragic (but, yes, funny) and unsatisfying outcomes. He even blows his heroic welcome home party. It's Powell at his best, writing about parties, parties and more parties of the rich and famous, intertwined with real drama, a nice, tight mixture in a little book.

By maria Isabel cruz I've always wanted to go to Prague but there's this sense of fear for new things so I decided to buy this book for reference. Prague is one of the most beautiful European cities. This book will show you the most beautiful places that you can visit. It's romantic and it's amazingly fun to imagine myself being there especially at Prague Castle w/c is the largest ancient castle in the world.

It is sometimes a hassle to travel, especially when you are not familiar with the place so it is important to study or at least have a background check first for the place you are going to especially if it is your first time in there. And if you have a plan on going to prague, this book will be a great guide. It has so many details about the city, from the overview, to of course tourist spots, the food you must try even the night life you should go. It is organized in a way that you will not have any trouble of having no enough time. By just reading the book, I already want to book a flight to prague as soon as I am available.

By Alex One of the most beautiful countries of Europe, Prague has always been one of the many countries I have in my bucket list. While others get the chance to travel I currently do not have that opportunity just yet. For now I am limiting myself to reading travel books that will give me the idea of just what it is I am going to enjoy the moment I slowly cross them off my list! Marc's book is definitely a great travel book for the beautiful country of Prague! Reading this book has made me feel like a local instead of a soon to be tourist!

The Deluge: An Historical Novel of Poland, Sweden, and Russia. a Sequel to "With Fire and Sword.", Volume 2, by Henryk Sienkiewicz

From Publishers Weekly Surrounding himself with murderous libertines and wastrels, wild young Polish soldier Andrei Kmita is misled into treason. But his pure love for spirited Olenka (Aleksandra Billevich) eventually sets him on track and inspires his single-minded mission, the defense of his motherland. It's the middle of the 17th century, and the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth is crushed in a vise of rebellion and bloody onslaughts by Swedes and Russians. Around the constants of love and war, Polish novelist Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) weaves a fugue of betrayal, redemption, faith and passion. An underlying theme questions whether people can rise above their time and circumstances. In his massive novel, with its eerie foreshadowing of modern Poland's overthrow of the Soviet yoke, Sienkiewicz ( Quo Vadis? ) gives a resounding answer. His rounded characters represent all sectors of society in this, the second volume of a trilogy begun in With Fire and Sword. The convincing translation by Polish-born American novelist Kuniczak adds luster to a robust populist epic. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal A mere five years have passed since the knights of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth threw back the Cossack invasion from the East, yet a new and far more dangerous threat appears: Swedish troops are pouring across the northern border. Thus begins Sienkiewicz's sprawling epic sequel to With Fire and Sword ( LJ 3/15/91). As in the first novel, the text brings to life an entire 17th-century culture, unfolding like a richly adorned tapestry. Central to the story is Andrei Kmita, a young Lithuanian noble whose ruthlessness obscures his military sagacity and bravery, branding him an outlaw. But for the love of the beautiful Olenka, he undertakes to reshape his character in the forge of battle, and in so doing helps save king, country, and church from the heretic invaders. Beside him fight Volodyovski, Zagloba, and Skshetuski, the principal knights from With Fire and Sword . In many ways, the new saga in which they appear falls short of the high standard set by that magnificent predecessor. The characters are more stiffly predictable, the pace protracted, and the ending too abrupt. Nonetheless, its significance eclipses its flaws, making it essential in any collection.-Paul E. Lost in the Translation By Douglas Merrill By all means, buy this edition if it is your only way to enter the marvelous world that Sienkiewicz has given to Poland and to posterity. Discover why the Trilogy has been a best-seller in its native land for more than a century. Epic adventure, star-crossed love, villains, heroes, treachery, heartbreak and humor. Sienkiewicz wrote to lift up the hearts of his people, and if he doesn't lift yours, see a cardiologist immediately. But beg or borrow if you can, and steal if you must, the translation by W.S. Kuniczak that was published in the early 1990s. Discover what happens when a novelist translates. Kuniczak is true not just to the sentences, but to the spirit of the work. He blows the dust out of the century-old writing and lets it shine. And for readers not on intimate terms with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th Century (admit it), he effortlessly drops in helpful hints. Here's how Curtin starts:There was in Jmud a powerful family, the Billeviches, descended from Mendog, connected with many, and respected, beyond all, in the district of Rossyeni. ... Their native nest, existing to this day, was called Billeviche; ... In later times they branched out into a number of houses, the members of which lost sight of one another. They all assembled only when there was a census at Rossyeni of the general militia of Jmud on the plain of the invited Estates. And Kuniczak:In the part of the old Grand Duchy of Lithuania that was known as Zmudya, and which antedated the times of recorded history, there lived an ancient family named Billevitch, widely connected with many other houses of Lithuanian gentry, and respected more than any other in the Rosyen region. ... Their family seat, known as Billevitche ... so that in time they split into several branches that seldom saw each other. Some of them got together now and then when the Zmudyan gentry gathered for the annual military census near Rosyen on a plain called Stany...Honestly, which version would you rather spend 1700 pages with? The native nest or the family seat?(And just by the by, when will a smart publisher sell the Sienkiewicz Trilogy alongside Tolkien? Why do they squirrel it away with the Serious Literature in Translation that mostly gathers dust? There's millions and millions of dollars in these books, lying around, waiting for someone to market them properly.)

Number two in the trilogy on the history of Poland, this is the best I have read in a long, long time. It stands alone as a story, but many of its characters have been proven in war in other stories of Sienkiewicz. If for that alone, it is worth reading this book after "With Fire and Sword". It tells the love story of a man and a woman tragically separated by foolishness, pride, confusion and the Swedish invation of Poland in the 1500s which divided a nation against itself and drew the best and worst out of its citizens. Above all, this is a romantic novel, but with enough battles, action and virtues to outdo the Illiad. You will cry and laugh as you read it; you will hope against hope; you will feel in the middle of the battle; you will want to unsheath your sword and run after the neighbours... In sum, another Sienkiewicz masterpiece. Written from a Catholic perspective, this book summarizes well the soul of the Polish nation and its love for the Church.

As usual with Sienkiewicz, however, the pages are required to tell the story. This novel brings back the main characters from "With Fire And Sword" though they play a somewhat smaller role, especially Pan Yan and Helen. Two new main characters take center stage.Andrei is a wild knight whose thoughtless, self-absorption mirrors the attitudes of the ruling class in Poland at the time. His attitude leads him down a terrible road and then forces him to make the hard, arduous climb back from nothing once he realizes his error. The skill with which Sienkiewicz intertwines Andrei's descent and redemption with the greater struggle of Poland against Sweden is brilliant! On the other hand, there's Olenka who is loved by Andrei. She seems to represent Poland itself and the ethics which are required to preserve something worth fighting for. She is the moral center of the novel even when she's not in the foreground of the action.Their love story plays out in the midst of a tale of war that involves the invasion of Poland from three countries at the same time (the 'deluge' of the title). We meet the Kings of two countries, the nobles under them with their own agendas, and the soldiers fighting on as power shifts from one side to the other in an international game where the winners get crowns and the losers lose everything.Just a sample of a few threads in the story: the siege of a holy shrine, a knight leading a small band of raiders against an army, a woman taken captive by a warlord and makes him regret iit, a country defeated not by the army of its enemies but by something more deadly from within, the plots of a noble family to rip apart an entire nation solely to rule a part of it themselves, the attempt to return an exiled King to his country through wild mountains full of enemy soldiers. This is just a sample! The scope of this novel is absolutely unsurpassed and, best of all, Sienkiewicz has the imagination, characters and events to keep it interesting for over 1,700 pages! You really do feel as though you've lived the two years that are encompassed by this novel. So much happens. In less capable hands, "The Deluge" could have been just a boring history lesson. Sienkiewicz weaves all the history and political figures of the time with his own characters to crystallize a crucial point in a nation's history. In addition, he crafts a story that is unbelievably complex and yet thouroughly entertaining from first page to last. And hats off to the translator! How many people would have the talent and stamina to translate something this long and do such a consistent and beautiful job? Not many, I imagine.

History of a Crime, by Victor Hugo, Huntington Smith

About the Author The best-known of the French Romantic writers, Victor Hugo was a poet, novelist, dramatist, and political critic. Hugo was an avid supporter of French republicanism and advocate for social and political equality, themes that reflect most strongly in his works Les Mis?rables, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and Le Dernier jour d'un condamn? (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). Hugo s literary works were successful from the outset, earning him a pension from Louis XVIII and membership in the prestigious Acad?mie fran?aise, and influencing the work of literary figures such as Albert Camus, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola.

Fascinating document and captivating documentary novel By Peter Dale Victor Hugo's long and chequered life was filled with experiences of the most diverse character - literature and politics, the court and the street, parliament and the theatre, labour, struggles, disappointments, exile and triumphs.Victor Hugo's HISTOIRE D'UN CRIME (History of a Crime - The Testimony of an Eye-Witness) is an impassioned recording of the December 1852 coup d'etat that brought the usurper he called "Napoleon le petit" to power, and sent Hugo into an eighteen year exile. The work was written in the few months following Hugo's flight, but only published in 1877, when Hugo feared a similar takeover by Marechal Mac-Mahon, who had threatened the dissolution of the republican-dominated Chambre des deputes (parliament).During his exile on the island of Guernsey, he completed, among others, his longest and most famous work, Les Misérables (1862), and also The Man Who Laughs (L'Homme qui rit; 1869), also known as "By Order of the King", a historic novel with fictional characters, set in England 1688-1705.Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (1808-1873), the main character of "History of a Crime", was elected President (1848 - 1852) of the Second Republic of France, and subsequently accepted the title of the Emperor (1852 - 1870), reigning as Napoléon III.
