Written with the perspective of age and its accompanying wisdom, the poems are delivered in three sections. All contain Watters keen sensory images of nature and the change of seasons. Some glimpse the miracle of a grandchild's wonderment, others invite us to understand a grudging acceptance of manmade changes to the landscape and his own daily patterns. The final poem, "The Unexpected Task," should be required reading for anyone who serves on a local town council or county board. Reminiscent of the citizen activists in the film "Erin Brokovitch," Watters shares his experiences during an 8-year battle on behalf of the small town of Lisbon, NY trying to gain concessions from the behemoth New York Power Authority on issues of land use and the damming of the St. Lawrence River. The prose-poem flows not unlike the river at the center of the disputes. Methodically and lyrically we fall into the cadence of meetings between lawyers, politicians and volunteer townspeople. Frustrations and tempers flare on both sides, promises are regularly broken, all seems lost, then, eight years in the making, a resolution of sorts. Few civic leaders would take the time or have the skill to create art out of such a rigorous and thankless endeavor. Kudos to Roger Watters for showing us, through poetry, what true citizenship looks and feels like.
