A deceptively simple spiritual story about the inevitability of death, the interconnectedness of life, and the redeeming power of love. When twelve-year-old Nick Harper loses his father in an automobile accident, he enters a period of mourning that threatens to engulf him. His mother, badly injured in the crash, lies comatose in their home. For weeks he wanders about his family’s Ohio farmland in a world of his own, while his aunt, nursing her own grief with red wine, looks on helplessly. Yet as the early summer sun warms the earth, something awakens inside of Nick and he slowly opens up to those around him, hoping to make sense of the terrible tragedy. But it is a force of nature that actually begins his healing: a voice calls to him, first as the cry of a frightened, lost soul, and by summer’s end as a source of comfort and inspiration. A beautiful, mystical fable, The End of Summer will reaffirm your belief in the power of the human spirit.

From Publishers Weekly A daring portrait of a grief-stricken boy on the edge of madness, this first novel focuses on 12-year-old Ohio farm boy Nick Harper as he copes with anger, sorrow and hallucinations after his father dies when his truck skids off an icy road. Overwhelmed by the tragedy, Nick converses with the spirits of Erie Indians in an ancient burial ground they are said to haunt; these ghostly voices?which he later realizes are his own projections?tell of their tribe's genocidal extermination. Sinking deeper into fantasy, Nick spends months in the woods secretly conversing with a voice speaking from a puddle about the inevitability of death, the redeeming power of love, the interconnectedness of all life. Nick's mother, we learn, survived the crash but is comatose with grief, so his reclusive, alcoholic Aunt Justine has come to live with him. She informs Nick about his father's hippie past. Nick's cold psychologist urges him to let go of the voices, but this happens only in the shocking surprise ending, which brings a healing catharsis. This politically correct fable constantly manipulates the reader's emotions, yet as a precocious youth's exploration of whether life has meaning and of why good people suffer and die, it is sometimes piercingly moving. About the Author John Lowry Lamb, author and screenwriter, lives in Rocky River, Ohio. The End of Summer, his debut novel, was translated into five languages.
From AudioFile As a 12-year-old boy confronts the tragic loss of his father, his unique healing process disturbs the adults around him. Howard McGillin's sensitive and thoughtful performance creates the surrealistic environment invented by young Nick Harper. McGillin eerily portrays a variety of "voices" only Nick can hear from the "after world." His in-depth depiction of Nick's alcoholic aunt and guardian, experiencing her own grief, expresses her desperate attempt to reach Nick without alienating him. McGillin portrays the child psychologist as stern and somewhat distant, which is exactly the way Nick finds him. As Nick evolves to the other side of his grief, McGillin allows the listener to experience his joy and freedom. B.J.P. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

A Story for Everyone By A Customer "The End of Summer" is an awesome story, handling grief and loss realistically yet strangely...after all, how many people find solace and wisdom from puddles? Yet I could picture a lonely meadow where an injured soul could sort out their thoughts and receive "advice" from nature. Don't long walks often clear our minds and help us put life into a better perspective? This story is for someone who is trying to understand life and death, love and hate, gain and loss, or for someone who is just trying to reafirm or understand their spirituality. And what a powerful message for those who are intent on destroying all that is around us - "...everthing is part of the dance...do not break the beautiful rhythm of the universe..." Thank you John Lowry Lamb for your insight and images.

It started out slow, with Nick, the main character trying to sort out how to deal with the death of his father in a car crash, and hearing a variety of "voices,"as he seems to wander in and out of reality. I found myself wondering where this strange beginning was going, but very quickly I was caught up in Nick's predicament. Several things take place later in the story that will break your heart. It is masterfully told by an outstanding narrator and I found myself wiping tears from my eyes on several occassions, as the story came to a close. Although the two-tape audio book is an abridgement, it is very powerful. I also like the way animals are strangely "drawn" to Nick. A real keeper...don't miss it.

It literally changed my life. Through a fictional story I was able to re-evaluate my grief and accept my father's death in a totally new way. I lent it out to anyone who lost someone close to them and naturally- I rarely received it back. I'm on my fourth or fifth edition and have read it several times through. As an adult going to work for Hospice, I can truly attest to the fact that as a child, learning about, embracing, and understanding sadness and loss of a loved one through any means necessary (in my case it was this book)is extremely important. My specific gratitude goes out to JLL as I have never been religious, and therefore lacked the ability to find "assurance or peace" through "God." This book helped me to realize at a young age that I didn't have to look towards anything other than the cycle of life and nature for comfort and understanding. This book is a wonderful resource for Atheists, Agnostics, Humanists, "spiritual...but not religious", Wiccan, "other" etc. parents whose children have lost someone close to them.Of course, I must add that it does not, in any way, "bash God" either, so it is also an excellent read for believers as well!
