Her book "Soul Led" was really great. Especially following her first one( "Pieces to Peace"). I go back to both books and read the poems at night. It's so relaxing. Love them both!!! “Hoover’s poetry seems to me closely related to her music. We often speak of poetry as “musical” when in addition to the meaning of the words their sound has its own interest… These poems are frequently deeply heartfelt. They are also wonderfully varied.”

-Leslie Gerber (music critic, poet, and author of “Lies of the Poets”)

And so we began a

silent circling vigil

I, moving, pausing

the hawk lifting, gliding

then perching nearby,

a long, liquid dance.

Music,my love,

you spoke to me as a child

watering the desert of my heart;

beckoning with urgency

you took my soul

for your own.

Well, handsome, I guess it’s

not in the stars but

I’ll have

the touch of your suede

vest and the sweep

of your shoulders

to go

I took some leaves

a spider web

flowers, rain

I cut them in pieces

sewed them in strips

and bound them with

ribbons.

Running in the park

electric exhilaration

in a brisk wind

sweatshirts, ruddy cheeks and

brotherhood

with the fast and slow

Pritchett Katherine Hoover eloquently opens the door to her soul through the inspired offerings in, "This Way About". It is a rich collection of poems shared with rare vulnerability and grace. Ms. Hoover is a true poet, allowing her readers to partake freely of her generous spirit expressed through the written word. We should be so fortunate as to take with us the unique melody each poem sings, be it that of elation, passion, longing, or quiet contemplation. I look forward to the next volume with enthusiasm.

The best kind of book, a "go back to" keeper By Dorothy Braker Received this in the mail Friday...my family is lucky it is a slim volume, won't be putting it down any time soon! I love poetry, this is written by a good friend who also happens to be a fabulous composer and musician, so the poetry is filled with meaning and always the perfect choice of words - but added to that is the sense of timbre and sonority, and in each poem the perfect chosen meter. I know what Christmas will be about this year...

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful book that needed a much better ending. By CT Yonge does an exceptional job in this novel of developing her characters. It is this gift that maintains the reader's attention through what is a rather long novel about a large English family growing up in the countryside. Her insight into human nature and even human psychology for most of the novel as depicted in her characters is to be greatly admired. The unfortunate part of this novel occurs within the last 1,000 pages or so. Up to this point, the novel is quite good. It had maintained a "realness" to it without overdoing the sentimental drama. All of this ends towards the end of the novel. The story of Alan Earnscliffe and Margaret May is over-the-top sentimental and sad. This would be forgiveable, if the main protaganist in the novel (Ethel) had her own happy ending. Spoiler alert: Unfortunately, Ethel continues to sacrifice everything for others knowing that she will end up lonely when they all move on with their lives. It goes beyond honest Christian charity and unselfishness into an unhealthy lack of boundaries on Ethel's part. She seems to fail at teaching some of her family members self-sufficiency. The very thing that the authoress critiques in Dr. May (Ethel's father) when his wife was alive, she unknowingly fosters by keeping him dependent on Ethel to run the household. It is a travesty that Yonge chose to end her novel this way. The ending does not appear to be as measured and well-thought out as the rest of the novel. It is almost as if she was in a hurry to wrap things up (the ending is rather abrupt). The three stars I gave this novel were for her brilliant character development and beginning and middle sections of the novel. The ending I would give a negative rating if it existed. That is quite unfortunate.

An inspirational family By T-bone Malone This novel tells the story of the May family where 11 children are left motherless when their father overturns the family's gig. The portraits of the different children and their reactions to their loss and their development and especially the growth of Ethel May are lovely. Read this and then read "The Trial", which is the sequel for a full dose of CMY's multi-character family saga.

Peace, Love and Tranquillity By Kindle Customer I would like to thank Robert Lampros and Goodreads First Reads for my free copy of " Fits of Tranquillity".This book felt like my favorite warm blanket wrapped around me on a cold night. The simplicity of the words written invoked beautiful images in my imagination. Two of my favorites are " Storms" and" Zephyrology ". I absolutely loved "Peace.......Someday we'll wake completely free, our hands and feet unbounded.....". I truly recommend this book to those that want to take a moment and breathe in the peaceful and tranquil thoughts these poems inspire. I simply loved it.

If so, I invite you to give a new book by a new author a try. ‘Fits of Tranquility’ by Robert Lampros is described as ‘a book of poetry and prose about hope, healing, perseverance, and joy, as well as faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and falling in love.’Containing over 20 unique poems and short stories, this book ranges in topic from inspiring images of nature to thought-provoking stories filled with charming dialog and everything in between. With some portions, the intent of the author is very clear while at other times the meaning is more vague, leaving readers to bring their own perspectives to the words. A few of my favorite selections include: ‘Verdure’, ‘For What It’s Worth’, and ‘Invisible Arms’.If you are searching for a collection of succinct bits of poetry that are sure to bring a smile to your lips or a new thought to your mind, this book is a nice choice. Although at certain points it is clear to discerning readers that Mr. Lampros is a beginning writer still finding his voice, this adds rather than detracts from the charm and simplicity of the book. Overall, I would recommend giving ‘Fits of Tranquility’ a try – and will be watching for future releases of more poetry and stories by Robert Lampros.I am grateful to the author for sending me a free copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

By Savurbks SUMMARY:Filled with poetry and prose surrounding faith, hope, peace and love, author Robert Lampros shares his inner reflections in intriguing, thought provoking words. Split into two parts, ideas of hope, healing, joy and faith mirrored in poems of family, lightening, life and wilderness, the second part is comprised of prose about falling in love…A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:Interestingly, poems are often full of unique meaning to the author as well as the reader. Though I am unsure of the author’s exact meaning behind each poem, several invited my own thoughts, feelings and connotations upon reading them. Though more unsure of the included prose of falling in love, I am certain it holds a special bond for the author, Robert Lampros. Most certainly a book for avid poetry readers, I am glad to have been given the opportunity to read and enjoy this author’s work.RATING:3.5 (out of 5) pennies*I received a complimentary copy of Fits of Tranquility from the author for my honest review*

The hills east of Scrantons downtown are home to one of the most eclectic and historic neighborhoods in America. Scrantons aptly named Hill Section developed over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, from what was originally rugged terrain and dense forest to a socially diverse enclave. The areas close proximity to Scrantons commercial center and unparalleled views of the Lackawanna Valley attracted many of Scrantons wealthiest and most prominent citizens, including the citys namesake Scranton family, to build palatial mansions in a myriad of architectural styles on its many hills. Middle-class citizens soon followed suit, building smaller but equally splendid homes alongside their elite neighbors. To serve the Hill Sections growing population, civic leaders organized religious and community institutions, and local merchants developed commercial enterprises. Ultimately, the Hill Section became home to many well-known educational and medical centers, beautiful parks, and cultural establishments. By pbug56 We found this book newly arrived at Everhart Museum last weekend and grabbed one, then later sent one from Amazon to family. The Hill Section is a pretty amazing place and this book captures that. Even with little errors (the 3 houses on the 600 block of NORTH WEBSTER (not just Webster) Avenue were built in the teens; the one in the middle, according to what I was told by the Historical Society, in 1917, for instance. But I can happily look past that to the rest, something I never dreamed I'd see in a book.A side note - this series of books in general are a great thing!

PDF Ebook Ubiquitous Q, by Gill Casey

Q is a curious letter - worth ten points in Scrabble, rarely used, and usually followed by a U. Quite appropriately though, it is a recurring feature in the life of Quetzal Quinn. From quagmires to qualifications and from quizzes to quotations, the letter Q always seems to be there in Quetzal's life. Ubiquitous Q is the heart-warming, life-affirming, and often humorous story of Quetzal, known simply as Q to her friends, from her childhood as a member of the Pugh family (when she was known as Q Pugh) to turning fifty and becoming a quinquagenarian. With a loving family and good friends, whose fate and fortune often seem to be determined by their own names, Q has lived a varied and largely happy life. Ubiquitous Q is more than the story of one person though; it is the story of a family and community and their triumphs and tragedies. A story we can relate to and a story to warm our hearts.

The book tells the story of one woman’s life (whose name is Quetzal); her family, how she met her husband, activities she is interested in etc. There is no drama at all. Just a telling about her life. What I liked most about this book is the authors writing style. She adds an excitement to the book that is hard to find in some other novels. I also like how the author incorporated the entire story around the letter Q. Overall it’s an enjoyable read. Don’t expect much from the plot because there isn’t too much to it. But the characters are enjoyable and sweet.

THE WEIGHT OF SNOW:In the award-winning book The Weight of Snow, author B. L. Bruce explores the many plights of the human species, from the mysteries of the heart and the inescapability of death, to the depths of human emotion. Told from the perspective of a poetic naturalist, Bruce shares her appreciation of the wild, illuminating the profound in the mundane while chronicling the natural world as both an observer and as an irrefutable part of it. Her poems focus strongly on image and locality, conjuring the imaginations of readers and celebrating the beauty in the follies of the human condition and its capacity to grip the soul. (Bri L. The Weight of Snow: New and Selected Poems, by Bri L. Bruce

Review RECOMMENDED:"The Weight of Snow belongs on your bookshelf or coffee table. Keep it close by. The beautiful cover and title itself evoke soul― and then what a treat to open the pages! The poetry is a subtle example of the paradox of soul; for example, it captures both innocence and disillusionment. It is haunting and provocative while simple and natural. The author's amazing gift of poetic writing and presentation cannot be missed―it’s on every page. Very touching. The poems have that rare quality of taking on new meaning with every read. It is so much more than a book of poems―but you must experience it yourself. This is a book to have and to hold--and then make sure to send one to a friend."―Dr. Linda R. Harper, Author of Eat: A Guide to Discovering Your Natural Relationship with Food and The Power of Joy in Giving to Animals (Bri L. Bruce Weight of Snow)RECOMMENDED:"The poems in The Weight of Snow are heartfelt, skillfully written, and keenly observed fragments of the natural world and our lives there. Bravo."―Gary Young, Poet Laureate of Santa Cruz County, Award- Winning Author of No Other Life, Braver Deeds, and Pleasure (Bri L. Bruce Weight of Snow)RECOMMENDED:"There is nothing to say that would be as lyrical and eloquent as this poet's language. She writes as a daughter of California's wild places. Words lift the edge of ordinary and invite the reader to journey through vivid and vulnerable landscapes. Bri Bruce's explorations do not shy away from a world where snow can sometimes be ash, or love can be cloaked in loss. Make space, Gary Snyder, Jane Hirshfield, and Ellen Bass, there is a new poet climbing and swimming her way up to claim her place among you."―Karen K Lewis, Author and Executive Director of Mendocino Coast Writer's Conference (Bri L. Bruce Weight of Snow)

About the Author AUTHOR:B. L. Bruce holds a Bachelor’s degree in literature and creative writing from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Currently a writer, photographer, and editor, her work has appeared in over fifteen anthologies, magazines, and literary publications, including The Sun Magazine, Northwind Magazine, and The Soundings Review. Most recently she was named Featured Poet of The Wayfarer’s holiday issue, her work reflecting a life amongst her native California backdrop of redwoods and Pacific shoreline. She was nominated for the Ina Coolbrith Memorial Poetry Prize in 2009 as a student of Santa Cruz’s first poet laureate, Gary Young. The Weight of Snow is her first book. (Bri Bruce Weight of Snow)

They take you to places, memories, situations or allow you to live vicariously through the experiences of another. The Weight of Snow is such a book from beginning to end. It is not a collection of disjointed poems, thrown together. It is a poignant and beautiful story of a life, experiences, memories and pain. Ms. Bruce is truly a gifted poet and one need only read the first poem, to understand her talent and what this book holds. I highly recommend The Weight of Snow for how it touches, reveals, informs and for its beautiful simplicity.

She uses spare but effective descriptions to illuminate the natural world and our response to it. Her sharp perceptions about human wildlife (The Blue Scarf) also resonated with me. Love, loss and the eternal solace of nature. She is the worthy heiress of Mary Oliver. This would make a great mother's day gift for a special mom.

Campbell leaves behind the cold and damp of the oncoming Chicago winter to spend what he believes will be his last Christmas in the warm and welcoming town of Lost River. There he meets the postman who delivers mail by boat, the store owner who nurses a broken heart, the ladies of the Mystic Order of the Royal Polka Dots Secret Society, who do clandestine good works. And he meets a little redbird named Jack, who is at the center of this tale of a magical Christmas when something so amazing happened that those who witnessed it have never forgotten it. A Redbird Christmas: A Novel, by Fannie Flagg

From Publishers Weekly Lured by a brochure his doctor gives him after informing him that his emphysema has left him with scarcely a year to live, 52-year-old Oswald T. Campbell abandons wintry Chicago for Lost River, Ala., where he believes he'll be spending his last Christmas. Bestselling author Flagg (Fried Green Tomatoes; Standing in the Rainbow) makes this down-home story about good neighbors and the power of love sparkle with wit and humor, as she tells of Oswald's new life in a town with one grocery store and a resident cardinal (or redbird, as the natives call it). Frances Cleverdon, one of four widows and three single women in town, hopes to fix him up with her sister, Mildred—if only Mildred wouldn't keep dying her hair outrageous colors every few days. The quirky story takes a heartwarming turn when Frances and Oswald become involved in the life of Patsy Casey, an abandoned young girl with a crippled leg. As Christmas approaches, the townspeople and neighboring communities—even the Creoles, whose long-standing feud with everybody else keeps them on the other side of the river—rally round shy, sweet Patsy. Flagg is a gifted storyteller who knows how to tug at readers' heartstrings, winding up her satisfying holiday tale with the requisite Christmas miracle. From Booklist Oswald Campbell doesn't have much to live for, except to cash his paltry pension check, drop in on the occasional AA meeting, and visit the VA hospital. Dreading another winter in Chicago, he takes in stride the news that his emphysema will probably take his life before Christmas. Having no family except an ex-wife, who has since moved on, Oswald follows his doctor's advice and spends his final months in a more comfortable climate. By chance, he ends up in Lost River, Alabama, a sleepy town with so many single, older women that Frances Cleverdon, a widow, hopes that Oswald will turn out to be someone's knight in shining armor. Not quite the Romeo they had hoped for, Oswald nonetheless is taken under folks' wings. Without noticing how it happens, Oswald comes to love Lost River, visiting the town store and the feisty redbird that lives there, waiting out at the dock for the river-faring postman to bring the mail, or accepting myriad dinner invitations from the town's women. Flagg based Lost River on her own hometown, and though such places may actually exist, there nevertheless is an allegorical feel to this little tale of hope, friendship, and common decency. Intended as a Christmas story, it would be readable year-round. Mary Frances WilkensCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Not only did I absolutely love this one, but yesterday I bought copies to give to all the booklovers on my Christmas list. It's wonderful, magical, and uplifting. Having read all of Fannie Flagg's novels, I can only say how much she amazes me with each new book. Her keen insight into what makees small-town America tick is definitely true, refreshingly rewarding, and a pure delight to share with other readers.Oswald T. Campbell, hapless orphan named after the can of tomato soup his mother left behind when she desserted him, feels life has just not been fair. He's never had a break, never a lucky streak, not even a fair-to-middlin' streak. And now his doctor has told him this Christmas will most likely be his last. Emphysema and Chicago winters are not a good match, and Oswald's drinking has not helped. An out-of-date brochure the doctor gives him leads Oswald to a better climate in Lost River, Alabama. The fictional city is located near Elberta, Lillian, and Mobile, but represents the small towns everywhere that the brilliant Ms. Flagg has immortalized in her wonderful work. This one is definitely hard to put down, so save it for when you have a spare afternoon or evening, if there is such a thing. You will be caught up at once in Oswald's life and his meeting with Jack, the redbird who lives at the neighborhood grocery store. The store's proprieter Roy, along with Frances, Mildred, Betty, Dottie, and even the infamous Julian LaPonde will have you spellbound and quickly turning the pages to see what happens next. But it is Patsy, the young, cripped child whose bond with Jack transcends reality that elevates this book to a league of its own.If you've ever wondered whether it's better to be an accordion player or an alcoholic, or wondered why so many people love to get in group pictures, you will be laughing out loud at this one. So grab a cup of Christmas cheer and prepare to experience a Christmas miracle.

I only wish she had more books out there for me to read. So when I saw this book had been released, I was ecstatic! This is a touching Christmas tale about a man (Oswald T. Campbell) and the wonderful little town of Lost River Alabama (a place I wish existed, cause I'd move there in a heartbeat!).Oswald is told by his doctor that he must leave the Chicago cold for the warmer temperatures of the south for serious health reasons. Lost River has been recommended to him as an ideal place to go, so he packs up, and heads down there, thinking he'll just be there for the winter. But as time goes on, Oswald falls in love with the little town, and all it's residence, including one very special redbird, Jack, and one precious little girl, Patsy.Of course I absolutely recommend this book for people of all ages, it's such a sweet Christmas story that I can't give enough praise to. Hopefully I won't have to wait so long for Ms. Flaggs next novel, but I'm confident it'll be just as wonderful as this one and all the others she has given us.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Enchantment on Each Page By Mamalinde Fanny Flagg delivers a Christmas tale to delight even the Grinch (and Scrooge too) - why even my sister loved it! With slush in his shoes and a life that lacks color, Oswald T. Campbell bids farewell to a bleak and wintry Chicago after the doctor delivers an unexpected death sentence. A very old brochure magically directs Oswald to Lost River, Baldwin County, Alabama, for his last months. As Oswald settles in, life suddenly becomes Technicolor and the kind of "family is where you find it" interaction gives all the characters of Lost River a reason to live and love. Jack, the redbird, is conniving little pest who knits the disparate characters into a wonderful whole. This is an easy recommendation for ALL ages. About halfway through the book, my reading slowed down, I savored each page, and knew that more enchantment would appear but that it would eventually end. Sigh. Mamalinda has already bought several copies for gifts.

Ivy Rose Murphy dreams of a better future. For years she has set out daily from the tenements known as ‘The Lane’ to beg for discards from the homes of the wealthy – discards she turns into items to sell around the Dublin markets. And now she has grander schemes afoot. But, as her fortunes take a turn for the better, there are eyes on Ivy – and she is vulnerable as she carries her earnings home through the dark winter streets. And, to add to her fears, a well-dressed stranger begins to stalk her. Ann Marie Gannon, a wealthy young woman who has struck up an unlikely friendship with Ivy, wants to protect her. But will the stubborn woman she admires allow her to do so? Jem Ryan, who owns the local livery, longs to make Ivy his wife, but she is reluctant to give up her fierce independence. Then a sudden astonishing event turns Ivy’s world upside down. A dazzling future beckons and she must decide where her loyalties lie.

Just when you think you have the plot figured out, someone new pops up and adds a new twist to her life. Watching Ivy and Jem work through the challenges they face and learn to move forward in their lives, without forgetting where their roots lie, is always a pleasure. Makes me glad I came to the series late in the game, because now I can read the third book without waiting months!

Few other Upstate counties can boast as much history as South Carolinas Union County. It is known as the birthplace of the Confederacy, with Revolutionary War battles fought at Blackstocks, Musgrove Mill, and Fish Dam. It is home to the writing desk upon which the Article of Secession was drafted, and Confederate Pres. Jefferson Davis spent two days in Union during his flight after the War between the States. Early 20th-century Union offered the worlds largest cotton mill and multiple mill village communities, with Main Street serving as a cultural center bustling with large early hotels, opera houses, and numerous fine examples of antebellum architecture.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words, But Captions Are Just as Important By Photo Genie Photo lovers always enjoy "Images of America" volumes from Arcadia Publishing, a company producing excellent pictorial histories for many years. It's a pity that this particular one cannot be called excellent.Roughly 75% of the 190 photos in this book have not been previously published, whether in books, newspapers or on the Internet. This is the big plus of Triggiani's work. However, the selection of some images has left me scratching my head. For example, 23 images are devoted to trains/railroads while the total number of portraits of Union's outstanding individuals is greatly disappointing. There are several images from places outside the county's bounds, and it's regrettable that this space could not have been used for other rare Union County scenes, which are part of the Union County Historical Society's collection. (One wonders why there were no photos of Pinckneyville, for example. And why was the oldest church building in the city of Union omitted? Of course, I refer to the Episcopal Church of the Nativity. Instead the book has two almost identical views of First Presbyterian Church, one on page 62 and the other on page 72.) Twenty photos show Union's textile industry at its great height, and this chapter is the most pleasing because of the fresh images of almost all of the mills in the county. Other chapters (like the curiously titled "Wars, Local Patriots, and Personalities" & "Music, Fire, Law, and Education") seem like nothing more than a jumbled conglomeration. There are some photos with scant accompanying text, and in fact, the exact locations of several pictures are not provided, leaving the reader to wonder which school, which part of the county, etc. This work would have benefited from both a careful editor and someone experienced with layout design. There are misspellings, grammar/capitalization mistakes, and awkward sentences here and there. It could have been better organized, in regards to the groupings of photographs.Sadly, there are factual errors as well. There are some misidentifications of people and places, the most glaring being a photo (page 125) of the first Union High School with a caption labeling it as the Central Grammar School. Both buildings are extant; a quick drive-by would have helped distinguish the two. On page 45, according to the author, Ernie Godshall died in 1918---an easy check of either death certificates or newspapers would show that it was the much older Eugene R. Godshall who died in that year.Just to set the record straight on a few other details:1. According to the Union Times newspaper edition of 17 August 1921, the Wallace Thomson Hospital opened its doors on 1 August 1921, not in 1911 as is stated on page 9 of this book.2. According to the Union Times newspaper edition of 23 February 1917, the Fairforest chapter of the DAR held its Washington's Birthday tea on 20 February 1917, not 22 December 1917 as is stated on page 11 of this book.3. The steam engine seen on page 31 is operating a saw mill, not replacing a mule or horse plow.4. On page 80, the author asserts that the only remains of the B.U.C. locomotives are "their circular number plates, two of which are in the Union County Museum's collection." If the author had looked a little more closely in that same museum, he would have also seen the big brass bell from one of the locomotives.5. The mill company store seen on page 113 is Monarch Mills Company Store.6. The correct spelling of the mill on page 109 is Ottaray.7. And on page 18, the identification should read "Oogie" instead of "Oggie."If only the author had reached out to other knowledgeable persons to avoid some of these disappointments.Despite its shortcomings, this book boasts some great images, many of which you can see in the Union County Museum, which is a far better museum than either the much larger and wealthier nearby counties (Spartanburg or Greenville) can claim.
