The hills east of Scrantons downtown are home to one of the most eclectic and historic neighborhoods in America. Scrantons aptly named Hill Section developed over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, from what was originally rugged terrain and dense forest to a socially diverse enclave. The areas close proximity to Scrantons commercial center and unparalleled views of the Lackawanna Valley attracted many of Scrantons wealthiest and most prominent citizens, including the citys namesake Scranton family, to build palatial mansions in a myriad of architectural styles on its many hills. Middle-class citizens soon followed suit, building smaller but equally splendid homes alongside their elite neighbors. To serve the Hill Sections growing population, civic leaders organized religious and community institutions, and local merchants developed commercial enterprises. Ultimately, the Hill Section became home to many well-known educational and medical centers, beautiful parks, and cultural establishments. In the 21st century, the Hill Section is still a thriving community that continues to preserve its heritage. Scrantons Hill Section tells the story of a distinctive neighborhood full of diverse people whose legacies are the true embodiment of American history.

By pbug56 We found this book newly arrived at Everhart Museum last weekend and grabbed one, then later sent one from Amazon to family. The Hill Section is a pretty amazing place and this book captures that. Even with little errors (the 3 houses on the 600 block of NORTH WEBSTER (not just Webster) Avenue were built in the teens; the one in the middle, according to what I was told by the Historical Society, in 1917, for instance. But I can happily look past that to the rest, something I never dreamed I'd see in a book.A side note - this series of books in general are a great thing!
