“People break my heart. Every single one of them does.” In settings that range from rural fishing communities to the urban capital, the stories of Cabin, Clearing, Forest are a lyrical road map to the human landscape of contemporary Alaska. In “Blue Ticket,” a stranger finds solace in a Juneau homeless encampment. Old friends argue over the pleasures and perils of small-town life in “A Beginner’s Guide to Leaving Your Hometown,” and in “Every Island Longs for the Continent,” a young family falls apart after moving to Kodiak. In these thirteen stories, Zach Falcon explores the burdens of familiarity and the pains of estrangement through characters struggling with their place in the world.

On top of that—and more to the point for those who don’t live here—he’s an exceptional writer.” (Juneau Empire)“Falcon demonstrates a mastery of language with this collection. . . . Each story sounds unique while still feeling cohesive as a whole.” (Fairbanks Daily News-Miner)

Craig Briggs’s bestselling Journey to a Dream told the true-life story of his dream move to Spain with wife Melanie and their dog Jazz. Not for them the tourist-packed Costas of the Mediterranean or the hills of Andalucia; they chose Galicia, an unspoilt paradise in the northwest corner of Spain. In Beyond Imagination Craig and Melanie begin to realise their dream as they finally move in to their new home – El Sueño. Transforming their barren plot into a garden oasis tests both his resolve and physique, and an eye for a bargain sends them on a quest to secure a national treasure. As the adventures unfold new challenges appear. Village neighbours are quick to introduce themselves and eager to assist when a communications oversight jeopardises their future, but even they are powerless to help when planning officialdom threatens to shatter their dream. Stroll hand in hand with Craig and Melanie as they settle in to their new surroundings, and journey with them as they embark on a life Beyond Imagination.

Beyond Imagination: When the adventure of a lifetime becomes a lifetime of adventures, by Craig Briggs

About the Author Craig left full-time education aged eighteen and began a career in retail. At the age of 28, he found his true vocation after buying into a small printing business. After 13 years of blood, sweat, and holding back the tears, he sold up to pursue his dream. In May 2002, two months before his fortieth birthday, Craig, his wife Melanie and their pet dog Jazz squeezed all their worldly goods into their aging executive saloon and headed off to Spain. Not for them the tourist packed Costas of the Mediterranean coast or the hills of Andalusia, no, they headed for Galicia, a remote and little known region in the northwest corner of Spain. Craig began writing a weekly column for an online magazine in 2004. Over the last few years he has written a number of articles for the Trinity Mirror Group and online publications such as: CNN, My Destination, and Insiders Abroad. In 2013 he published his first travel memoir Journey To A Dream. It tells the story of a turbulent first 12 months in Galicia. His latest book, Beyond Imagination, continues the adventure as they settle in to their new home and surroundings. As well as writing, Craig and his wife Melanie own a traditional Galician farmhouse which they rent to tourists from around the world. He’s also an enthusiastic wine maker and currently works two small vineyards.

To really appreciate Craig and Melanie's entire adventure, it is very beneficial to read both books. In "Beyond Imagination" you truly live through and laugh at the adventures they encounter completing their beloved home El Sueño, it's interior, pool, landscaping and vineyards. You meet lovely neighbours, workman -all with their opinions and advice ( no matter how ill conceived). You learn about the musts for landscaping (IUVs are more important than cars). Whilst shopping Craig misses Melanie's excellent Spanish speaking skills, he is better than he was but sometimes reverts to sign language. You'll learn of Craig's tips (patents pending of course), their encounters of a dangerous kind, wine making and their quest for a new house to renovate ( What! They need to keep this up. We need more sequels). I laughed and chuckled continuously through this book. What an adventure! Looking forward to more from Mr. and Mrs. Briggs. A good read - funny and informative book on living in Spain.

I was not disappointed by this 2nd installment at all and sincerely hope there will be a third soon! The house is finished and this amusing man from Yorkshire and his wife are now settling into life in their village in rural remote Galicia. I enjoyed the characters he comes across locally and also his hunt for a 2nd property to use as a business very much. I would probably go as far as to say I enjoyed this book a smidgen more than the first due to the picture he paints of everyday life in such a gorgeous spot. I adore this genre, especially when the author comes across as someone you you want to sit and spend time with. The characteristics of the true Yorkshire man shine through! Thoroughly recommend this book..

Highly entertaining and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading in any genre. I especially loved the descriptions of the various new projects taken on as homeowners in a new environment. Probably the wine making venture is the one that I enjoyed most. Looking forward to reading more about this lovely couple and their life.

Forces you to slow down and transfix on the deeper meanings of life By customer Pacify is much more than just a collection of soul-searching romantic poems. The author has taken on subjects such as love, loss, adversity, friendship, religion, nature, and the supernatural; and compels the reader to step back and contemplate the more profound implications of life. As a bonus, the author reveals his personal unguarded inspirations behind each piece of work, and offers insights rarely seen in a literary work. Superb!

It is much easier to read as many other poetry books. It includes the ideas that inspired the author to write the sonnets (for each work). The content ranges from the topics of soul, love, spirituality, and altruism. Lovely!

A collection of poetry

Success' Sweet Perfume

In my field of dreams and optimistic plans

I have planted what-ifs, reveries, and I-cans

I watered them with my blood, sweat, and tears

And tilled each row with the jagged edge of my fears

Until one day I stood back and watched them bloom

And smelled the scent of success' sweet perfume

When his childhood friend Verity is found at the foot of Beachy Head, barely alive, Harry's life is thrown into turmoil. He can't accept that the happy go lucky girl he grew up with would try to kill herself. He should know. He was closer to her than anyone - wasn't he?As Verity lies suspended in a coma, damaged beyond repair, Harry tries to uncover what went so horribly wrong in her life. Haunted by memories of their childhood, and by the knowledge that what they shared is lost forever, Harry begins piecing together the last few weeks of Verity's life. He enlists the help of another childhood friend, Adam, and Verity's business partner Sam. Sam is as baffled as Harry, but Adam thinks Verity's suicide attempt was the inevitable consequence of a life which was clearly spiraling out of control. The deeper Harry gets, the more questions remain unanswered. Why was Verity's flat burgled? Why was she secretly seeing a psychiatrist? And, for Harry, the most haunting question of all: why did Verity kiss him, all those years ago, and then banish him from her life? If Harry can't find the answers, he may have to face the fact that perhaps he never really knew Verity at all...

Celtic Contraries (Irish Studies), by Robin Skelton

From Library Journal This collection, for the most part revisions of published but unavailable essays, demonstrates the benefits of long study: Skelton has been among the leading scholars of Irish literature for decades. The "contraries" of his title are the dialectics of Irish/European, Realism/Romanticism, and Gaelicism/Classicism evident in the works of W.B. Yeats, his brother Jack B. Yeats, Synge, O'Casey, and several more contemporary Irish writers. Skelton offers clear discussions of single poems, with ample quotations and accessible synopses of literary careers. Yet he wears his scholarship lightly: these are sophisticated and informed interpretations without fashionable obscurity.- John P. Harrington, Cooper Union, New YorkCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

About the Author Robin Skelton lived in Victoria, B.C. until his death in 1997. Poet, editor, anthologist, teacher, biographer, art and literary critic and historical writer, Skelton had over 100 books to his name. His poetry collection The Edge of Time was nominated for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize at the B.C. Book Prizes. He is the founder of The Malahat Review and the founding chairman of the Department of Creative Writing at the University of Victoria.

Mrs. Isabella Bird Bishop who some years ago won her way into the Royal Geographical Society of England is well known throughout the English-speaking world and beyond as a traveler and a writer. Her "Unbeaten Tracks in Japan," and the account of her travels and experiences in Thibet and other parts of the East are generally regarded as standard works of their kind, and are read and quoted everywhere as authority. And now to these writings must be added another of the same general character and special value—"Korea and Her Neighbors." In this narrative we find that same painstaking and accuracy in matters of detail, that same power of graphic description, that same charm of style which distinguish all of Mrs. Bishop's writings. This work on Korea is without doubt the best and greatest work of travel, which has appeared during its publication year. It is the result of her experiences in and near Korea from early in 1894 to the spring of 1897. During this period it was Mrs. Bishop's good fortune to see the passing away of the old regime in the country and the dawn of a new social and political era; and it is our good fortune that these events should be chronicled by such a careful observer and charming writer. She arrived at Seoul, the capital, in time to see its 200,000 and more inhabitants turn out to salute, in silence, the sad and silent King on the last of the annual processions of the "Kurdong," surrounded by mediaeval and barbaric pomp ; in which, for five centuries, the King of the "Hermit Kingdom" has shown himself to his people—the King, whose word was absolute, whose name could not be whispered, and who remained secluded from his 12,000,000 subjects the rest of the year in the palace. She saw the Japanese occupation in 1894 ; and was received several times by the poor Queen (a fierce, able woman) before her murder, instigated by the Japanese Viscount Miura. But, apart from Mrs. Bishop's vivid descriptions of the country, its history, religions, products, and governments past and present, she is the only traveller and writer who has penetrated into the secrets of the Korean woman's life; and sad enough it appears to be. No other book on Korea is Ho satisfying in its presentation ot the frets of nature and man in Korea as they are to-day. Thin in not a work of history, hut of travel and observation. Yet, in its discussions of the forces and environment which have made the native what he is, it is thorough and illuminating . Mrs. Bishop, as all readers of her books know, has a fascinating style; she tells of her travels both in Korea ana anionic the Russians witti all the arts of rhetoric and the merit ot wondertul directness. 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. must-read for Korean history learner By Tad This book was written in 1897 by Isabella Bird, who was an English woman, about her experiences, researches and perspectives that she had during her travels in Korea, Japan, China and Russia from 1894 to 1897. There are still some disputes about the history between Japan and Korea before WWⅡ. I think this book shows a part of the true history of Korea during the time. The author of the book said the following,1. Koreans hate Japanese because the latter are arrogant to the former and the Japanese military intruded Korea in the end of the 15th century.2. The economic and political situations in Korea are terribly bad. People in Korea have been exploited by the privileged class like bureaucrats or aristocrats of its dynasty. Some of them tried to modernize Korea with the help of Japan. But then they had to struggle with people sticking with the old regime. In the end, they couldn’t change their country.3. Many changes which were instructed by Japan could seem valid and effective, if only they would be just implemented properly. However it seems impossible to modernize Korea by Koreans themselves.I would like Americans who are interested in the history between Japan and Korea, to read this book first in order to have a better understanding about two countries’ history. I’m afraid some recent books might be biased.I would also like readers to read the book entitled “ The New Korea” , which was written in 1926 by Alleyne Ireland. He was an expert of reign of colonies in the world. The book is not available in amazon.com, but it can be ordered from amazon.co.jp or you can find it at libraries.http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/switch-language/product/4434181815/ref=dp_change_lang?ie=UTF8&language=en_JP

This was recommended to me before I traveled in Korea this summer By Alice Watercress Isabel Bird Bishop was the quintessential Victorian lady traveler. This was recommended to me before I traveled in Korea this summer. I loved her Rocky Mountain book, and this one is equally fascinating. Despite its age, she descrbes Korea and Koreans in a sympathetic way, with many of her observations valid in 2014. Amazing book by an amazing woman.

It gives a nice picture of the international relations among China, Japan, Russia and Korea. It gives a lively picture about the feud within the Korean court, and the inabnility of the Korean government to care her people. The lack of the spirit of independence among Korean official is conspicuous.

Poetry. Two points of reference may be useful for orienting readers to the sequence of short works that comprise Nick Hoff's first book of poetry: the poetry of Paul Celan and the cinematic long take—a prolonged perceptual image that's presented with its own movement. These extended lyric moments have the austerity of Celan's, and also something of their innovative verbal intensity. But their emotional register is quite different; it almost invariably surrenders to beauty. The beauty is that of the quotidian miniscule, not the romantic sublime—and it is all the more wonderful for that.

Everything is arranged with perfect precision and meaning--the placement of the words on the page, the punctuation, the progression and layering of themes--from a distant and broad view of the world, to an immersion into the experience of seeing, to an utterly lovely unfolding of emotion that is present between perceiver and perceived, experiencer and experienced. That's what I got from it anyway. It's the sort of collection to read multiple times--it reminds me of how we breathe in and out and then suddenly discover the sweetness and dreamlike creativity of that space in between breaths--that's how this book makes me feel.

Free Ebook PDF Police Blotter Haiku, by Jim Jones

Does your newspaper have a police blotter? It's a column of short stories about minor crimes and disturbances. In the blotter you find tales of normal people with normal lives who have, for some reason, gone off the rails.

Aflame with anger, he set fire to the carport of her new lover.

The police blotter is funny, ugly, absurd, sad: in short, very human. And it lends itself to haiku: a brief, structured verse form that cuts through routine facts to the heart of the matter. A woman's young son comes home smelling of marijuana? The haiku reads:

The end of childhood. She smelled it as pot smoke on her twelve-year-old son.

What's the appeal? It's the knowledge that any of us could end up in the blotter. We're all human. If the right temptation catches us in the wrong state of mind, who knows what might happen?

Open this book, and see. Within you'll find over 250 tales of the human condition taken from newspapers across America - and over 100 illustrations.

Who knows? Maybe you're in there already.

Wilson This is a collection of haiku in 5-7-5 that focuses on some the funny, sad, and bizarre behaviors that end up on the police blotter. This isn't about high drama murder and mayhem; no, this collection focusses on the everyday disputes that ordinary people get into, the common foibles we have observed (and sometimes shared). I enjoyed this look at aspects of life that are, for the most part, ignored in haiku (and most poetry of any kind). The book is divided into 17 sections; including Men, Women and Wretched Exes; Bad Behavior; Haiku from Slacker County; Teens; Much Outrage About Nothing; etc. Each section is about 10 pages. The haiku are illustrated with great drawings of the bad behavior which add a lot to the overall impact of the haiku.I would compare this collection to 'Haikus for Jews' and 'Redneck Haiku: The Double-Wide Edition'. I think PBH fits into this tradition of popular haiku. The author, Jim Jones, has a good grasp of lineation and knows how to use an occasional rhyme effectively without overdoing it. There are very few run-on lines which give the haiku a shared sense of rhythm; there is a good pulse to the haiku as you move from one to the next. The haiku are of two types; single sentence haiku or in two parts. The two-part haiku have some of the flavor of juxtaposition found in more traditional haiku topics, but the contrast is not as dramatic.I have found that I can reread this collection and it still retains its appeal. For those interested in expanding the scope of haiku, this is an excellent resource. For those who want a wry, witty, and sympathetic look at the life of us ordinary human beings, this is the place to go. A very human and insightful collection.Dew catches the sunand floods the windshield with light.Two-car accident.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Truly Unique and Wonderful By Simon Bathard How do you explain this book to people when they see it on your coffee table? Well you don't, you can only explain what a police blotter is (we don't have them in the uk) and let them delve in. Its a funny / strange / sad snapshot of life in a way thats never been done before. Its not a small book either, its chock full of snapshots of life that you can pick up and randomly select at any time, its either pure genius or pure madness. If its madness then I must be mad as well (I have never been accused of being a genius), either way will make you laugh and confused as you wonder what happened to get that person doing that random thing and into the blotter. As a fan of Tales from the Coast, and half way through Evil Shoes with my son, Jims is creative with his overview of the subject and life in general, refreshingly different and well worth a delve!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ... compare to "Police Blotter Haiku" but I'm afraid this wonderful book is in a category all it's own By LK I was trying to think of another book (or books) I could compare to "Police Blotter Haiku" but I'm afraid this wonderful book is in a category all it's own. Bill Owens' "Suburbia" sort of does the same thing, in that his book of photographs (with laconic captions) shows the reader a view of Americans and how we live, warts and all. It's funny, and sad, and sometimes it's hard to put a name to the emotions that some of Jim's haiku evoke. The photographs included with the haiku especially add to the overall je ne sais quoi. If Jim Jones were a columnist with a magazine or newspaper, this book would have been published by a known publishing house. Instead, it is a labor of love. I'm hoping it will find it's way to a larger audience because it and the author deserve greater recognition. Highly recommended.

Women Writing: On the Edge of Dark and Light is a collection of works by Tacoma-area poets. Catherine Place in Tacoma is a space of healing, hope, and connection for all women and serves nearly 1,500 women each year. Named for Catherine of Siena, a 14th century Dominican who worked to effect change in the society of her day, Catherine Place fosters community learning and growth, leadership, support, and empowerment for women. The poets represented in this anthology are members of the Inscape poetry group, which has been meeting weekly at Catherine Place for the past five years. The group is facilitated by Kay Mullen, who edited this collection. While poets weave in and out of the group according to their own needs and circumstances, an ongoing group continues to meet each week, and all have discovered the power poetry continues to play in their lives. Proceeds from the sale of this anthology will support Catherine Place’s ongoing work with women in transition.

By JD With realistic characters that draw you in, fascinating settings that keep you guessing, and a plot that keeps you reading to the end, Treasure Hunted is a whirlwind adventure that most certainly keeps you on your toes. The story is set in an alternate universe very similar to our own, but with two major exceptions, the shape-shifting Ondier, and the ancient Mevoyans. Danger lurks around every corner of this book, from ancient ruins riddled with clever traps to archaeological espionage to the threat of an Ondier in the expedition's midst. Fans of suspense, monsters, intrigue, and good books in general will not be disappointed.

It kept me on the edge of my seat not wanting to put the book down the characters and stories we're very realistic I could see someone actually doing an expedition like this except for some of that unexpected things that occurred. I loved it very much.

Action and adventure that keeps you reading to the end By Amazon Customer I agree with the other reviewer, except it's not quite like "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (which actually IS Indiana Jones with aliens and also a terrible movie), it's more like a crossover of Indiana Jones and "Signs," but in a good way.

Quite interesting By Amazon Customer This book is scattered with urban poetry and tells a heartbreaking story of the destruction that close knit community justice systems cause everyday all across this nation for their own selfish and political gain. It appears to mirror a real life story of recent events and is quite shocking in its revelations. If you have a heart it might make you cry. If you are self righteous and judgmental it may anger you. Either way at the end of it you will be left with questions in your mind and maybe in your heart.

In spite of new freedoms and new therapies love between men and women is not easy. Elizabeth Elliott's fifth book of poetry has three parts: "First Love First Happiness," "In The Schools Of Love," and "Love And Its Interruptions."She writes, "I am too old to speak about First Love in today's world, but sixty years ago first love was about being unable to speak, about innocence and a kind of thrilled fear. It was not about choice so much as about commitment. Until divorce happened it couldn't happen. But a new freedom beckoned beyond the true sadness, actions were signed into a record and then --freedom is scratching at our eager door. Are we prepared for this freedom? NO. Do we learn? I guess." Eighteen poems have been culled from earlier books, thirty-nine poems are new or never been published. Included is a new concept for poetry, -just a word. Here you'll find insights written by the author behind the scenes for each poem. Elizabeth's poetry explores the human condition in our quests for power and truth, for persistence, justice and hope. On our need for individuality, a purpose, and for achieving our goals with courage and persistence. Her poems show us our innocence and our temptations, our gratitude and appreciation, and our freedom. Our struggle to overcome loss and death, evil and harm, war and conflict and to find love and joy with the healing power of our spirit and our psyche. And our capacity to play, to study nature, science, and time, to create art and beauty, to sense the paradox and to experience the transformation of our lives. Here is the poetry of life, and a life of poetry.

Love And Its Interruptions: Poems, by Elizabeth Elliott

Review ' a document in song in the history of woman's evolution. The poems have sprung forth from great depth. A harmony of verse has been achieved an expression of ripeness with special affinities, Anais --Anais Nin

About the Author Elizabeth Elliott spent the early part of her life growing up on an island off the coast of Maine. She writes, From an early age I stood by my mother's chair and in her doorway and watched her paint. How could it not seem completely natural for me to have a pencil in my hand and write? (I still have an encyclopedia I wrote in 1942 when I was ten.) I am the lucky child of four unusual creative parents that were deeply involved in the world (two step-parents were acquired shortly after the end of the war). I asked my father, who had dedicated his life to improve the world once if he thought he'd gotten anywhere. He said he thought of himself as a Johnny Appleseed, dropping seeds of fruitful new ideas that would gradually be picked up, planted and grown. Since then nothing has arisen to deter my love of people, and my love of writing poetry. Unremitting care for the world is my passion. So at the age of 75, having received only rejections for my poetry, I decided to publish my own books, using covers of my own choosing, and writing on the subjects of my life: children and human issues, love and politics, religion and the arts --the world I experience all around me every day so I can share it with my readers. Today Elizabeth still resides on the island off the Maine coast, but also spends her time in the hills of western Massachusetts and the islands of the Florida Keys with her wonderful poetry reading, history minded, art imbued husband. Elizabeth once said that she could feel a poem begin in her core and travel up within her body, down her arm, and out onto the page. And the results, the books she has published and are yet to be published, describe the conflict men and women find in ourselves and with each other, nature, our purpose and goals, our beliefs, and also the hope and healing we find in our spirit as we are transformed by the passage of time.

Uninterrupted pleasure By Richard Lipez This stunning latest collection from Elizabeth Elliott is about love of all kinds, maternal, romantic, sexual, uplifting, wounding, giddy, and dangerous---plus of course (one of her trademarks) love that looks death in the eye. She's got this great gift for drawing you in, achingly, and then stopping you cold in your tracks in the sweetest way. Good grief, how does she do it???

By DC Book Angel Elizabeth Elliott's poetry is elegant, spare, and illuminating. For lovers of poetry and humans with love experience, there are moments of nodding agreement both rueful and joyous. Five women and a lonely trailer park on the edge of the Mojave Desert...

What sifts beneath the sand are mysteries—a fossilized whale, a particle accelerator, and calculated dreams of escape. Above live five unique women: Hattie, who tries to find her dead mother's face within her own; Kinni, the veiled survivor of Nagasaki; Melody, the orphan who nurses wayward children; Lani, who uses a camera to create distances; and Oxena, who can't decide if she loves or hates her husband of forty years. As the men struggle with the bloodstain of history,  Azimuths  emerges as a story of emotional and physical paralysis. Each character remains on a singular trajectory, yet all are connected as they try to figure out who and why to love, and how to move forward with their lives.

Azimuths, by R.A. Morean

Review R. A. Morean's Azimuths features five women who live in a trailer park on the edge of the Mojave Desert, where there are no seasons. The possibility of change, though, is something this unforgettable cast of characters longs for and fears. The writing is spot on lyrical and full of grit exactly when it needs to be. This is a novel that will stay with you long after the final page. --Lee Martin, author of The Bright Forever, finalist for the Pulitzer PrizeIn the Raceway Trailer Park, Morean has created an indelible American place the kind of place where people of differing backgrounds come together to make a community of choice. A good novel is a self-contained world, full of rich individuals rooted in the American Landscape. Azimuths is just that. --Kevin Haworth, author of The Discontinuity of Small Things, Dayton Literary Peace Prize nominee

Courtney This is my first book-length literary fiction experience and I was fascinated by the character studies of select trailer park inhabitants. The author carefully blends first person points-of-view with third person omniscient POV to capture the true essence of these admittedly off-beat individuals. These people are held hostage by their pasts. On the one hand, we are indeed the culmination of our memories and experiences; they define us. On the other hand, do these experiences help us navigate the future or do they cripple us? There is an eeriness in the prose that is reminiscent of early Stephen King. There is also a bit of sci-fi; I would say very much in the style of Shelley’s Frankenstein. The result: a delightful confluence of forces and perhaps not-so-free free will. Further, bravo for the author’s inclusion of a reading group discussion guide at the end of the book.

By Amazon Customer This book is filled with such keen and exquisitely worded observations – of the desert landscape, of the cast of characters and their flawed, beautiful, complicated relationships – that are so spot on, so exactly right, they caught my breath and made me pause in wonder. I want to go back and find specific sentences so I can savor and absorb them, like I would a favorite line of poetry. The story itself is multi-layered, unusual, unpredictable, and even though I couldn’t always follow the physics, the women, men, and children at the Raceway Trailer Park held my interest and my heart until the last page.

It manages to be both deeply earthy and somewhat ethereal, if those two descriptions can coexist. Each character is fully realized and somewhat wounded -- physically or emotionally -- and each moves toward healing and reconciliation. While that may sounds like a familiar story, there is nothing trite or predictable in these characters or their journeys. It's a book I will need to come back to in order to sort out all the threads and layers of meaning, and I look forward to doing so.

Pan Tadeusz is an epic poem by the Polish-Lithuanian poet, writer and philosopher Adam Mickiewicz. The book was first published in June 1834 in Paris, and is considered by many to be the last great epic poem in European literature. The story takes place over the course of five days in 1811 and one day in 1812 at a point in Polish history, when Poland-Lithuania had already been divided between Russia, Prussia, and Austria and disappeared from the political map of Europe.

By Aleksandra Miesak Rohde The action takes place in the year before Napoleon prepared to attack Russia in 1812. It is a wonderful read, full of charming characters, surprise plot twists, unrequited love and cultural details of the rural life of Polish nobleman two hundred years ago. This version contains illustrations from the original 1834 publication, giving it an especially fascinating historical context. BTW, this is the English version of the epic Polish poem, much beloved by everyone, although probably less by Polish school children many of whom are required to memorize it (many of whom can still recite it into old age). Enjoy!!
