I bet no one reads this, but I'm writing it anyway By A Customer Jeffrey Farnol is not much remembered, but he seems to have been popular at the time he was writing. I read this book because I heard that Farnol was an important influence on Jack Vance, a science fiction writer I like. This book concerns Barnabas, a young (about 22) son of an English innkeeper who inherits a substantial fortune. He decides to try to join London's fashionable world, and has some success for a while. He becomes friends with a Viscount, has a stumbling romance with a Lady, gets into tons of fistfights, does some horse racing. Eventually, it is discovered that he is only an innkeeper's son, though, and he loses his place in the fashionable world. I think you get the idea. The first part of the book went slowly, and so did the last part. The middle was more interesting to read. Overall, the book was well written and enjoyable.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Well-Written Regency Book By E&M 4.5 StarsThis is the first book I have read from this author. I was interested in reading a Regency book written by a male author. The young Barnabas has just inherited a vast sum of money after his uncle's death. He wishes to become a gentleman so he heads to London but meets some interesting individuals on the way.Clean and light romance. An entertaining read.

He decides he would like to become a gentleman and heads to London. He meets a few interesting individuals along the way including his future love.I enjoy reading books from the Regency period so I truly enjoyed this book.Even though Farnol was born a few decades before Georgette Heyer I find their style of writing a little the same. Entertaining and clean romance.

When she was suddenly given the opportunity of a new life in rural Jutland, journalist and archetypal Londoner Helen Russell discovered a startling statistic: the happiest place on earth isn't Disneyland but Denmark, a land often thought of by foreigners as consisting entirely of long, dark winters, cured herring, Lego and pastries. What is the secret to their success? Are happy Danes born or made?

Helen decides there is only one way to find out: she will give herself a year, trying to uncover the formula for Danish happiness. From child care, education, food and interior design to SAD, taxes, sexism and an unfortunate predilection for burning witches, The Year of Living Danishly is a funny, poignant record of a journey that shows us where the Danes get it right, where they get it wrong, and how we might just benefit from living a little more Danishly ourselves.

Helen Russell is a journalist and former editor of MarieClaire.co.uk. She now lives in rural Jutland and works as a Scandinavia correspondent for the Guardian as well as writing a column on Denmark for the Telegraph.

By Elisabeth Price I'm actually still a Dane but haven't lived in Denmark for se entry years now, so this gives me an update on current mores that Id otherwise not get, and it's fascinating! I have known for a long time that I can never "go back to Denmark." What I knew as Denmark has altered almost beyond recognition. I think it's a change for the better: it's a more egalitarian society and very few people are forced into drudgery to stay alive. After 45 years in the United States I'd find it very difficult to live there now, excellent as it is in many ways. Having no Danish background at all, Helen Russell observes the Denmark of today with eyes uncontaminated by distant memories, but prejudiced in favor of the Danes being the happiest people on earth. This makes the book pleasant, interesting and funny to read, as well as quite informative. I really enjoyed it!

21 of 23 people found the following review helpful. American in Denmark By steven j. crawford Loved the book! Our family was very fortunate to live in Denmark for 3 yrs. in the early 90's. We lived as guests as we worked for NATO. Viborg was our home and we loved the community. The book explains some of the cultural practices we were not aware of as "Guests". I enjoyed reading about many of the experiences the author encountered, as we too lived "Danishly" In many cases. Loved the culture, and the people and valued our time there. In all fairness I cannot see America being able to adopt many of the social policies that the Danes live by, as we are such a large country, filled with so many cultures. I applaud the authors refreshing take as an outsider willing to give it her all in adopting a new homeland.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyed Helen's musings of the Danish culture By jsk A witty and enjoyable memoir about the land of Lego. Enjoyed Helen's musings of the Danish culture, of which I knew little beforehand. Made me want to read more about the Danes and possibly put Denmark on my travel bucket list. Be forewarned…you'll crave pastries ("Danish") and probably make a few trips to the bakery, as did I!

Author Lee Atterbury seems to get better with every novel he writes. Even those who are not horsemen or horsewomen will enjoy reading about the exploits of Jim Taylor, the lawyer turned (reluctant) lawman, and his wonderful horse Buck, as they help the local Wyoming sheriff bring neo-Nazis, drug runners and kidnappers to justice.

The Real Deal, by Fern Michaels

From Booklist Quinn Star has thrived since she quit the FBI, disgusted with the old-boy environment and devastated at the seeming betrayal by Puff, her boss and lover. Almost 10 years later, she has her own law practice, teaches, and is engaged to a judge. In fact, everything's perfect until Puff reappears to offer Quinn the job she always wanted, secret service agent at the White House. She hesitates because it will wreak havoc in her life but finally says yes. Quinn and a woman friend who also quit the FBI are to guard the First Lady, whom, it seems, is off her rocker and about to be committed. Quinn has her work cut out for her, but when she starts to see the same conspiracy afoot in the White House as the First Lady, she dedicates herself to protecting her and exposing secrets, not to mention dealing with her renewed feelings for Puff. Another fast-paced and engaging story from the prolific and entertaining Michaels. Maria HattonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Review "Fern Michaels's characters are so real and endearing...that it seems you are witnessing the story rather than reading about it."

About the Author New York Times bestselling author Fern Michaels has a passion for romance that stems from her other joys in life—her family, animals, and historic homes. She is usually found in South Carolina, where she is either tapping out stories on her computer or completing some kind of historical restoration.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. exciting contemporary romantic suspense By A Customer After performing as a superstar in a male world, Quinn Star quit the old boy network because she could not crash through the glass ceiling. She blames much of her failure on her former lover and ex boss "Puff" Lapusky, who she felt held her back. Quinn enjoys teaching law at Georgetown and loves her fiancé Judge Alexander Duval, ironically nominated to be the next FBI Director. For the first time in over seven years, Puff visits Quinn asking her to serve as a secret service agent protecting the First Lady Lettie Jaye, who has been acting strange. The Feds want her under surveillance and protected. Puff believes that Quinn is the best "man" for the job. The assignment proves problematical as Lettie uncovers a high level government conspiracy to hide the truth even if it means killing the current temporary occupants. The most difficult aspect of Quinn's job is not keeping the First Lady safe; it is the return of Puff. She now realizes that her negative feelings for him were a way of hiding her hurt because she still loves him.Fern Michaels is THE REAL DEAL when it comes to an exciting contemporary romantic suspense. Her latest tale moves on two intertwined subplots. The romance between the engaged Quinn and the man she hates and loves Puff, who should have been fired for messing with a subordinate (where is Mr. Clinton?) is remedied a bit too easily. The exhilarating White House suspense plot is filled with twists that will fool the audience who will enjoy every moment of the manipulations of those in power. This exciting romantic political thriller will appeal to fans who like the works of Nora Roberts and Jayne Ann KrentzHarriet Klausner

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. She does it again! By Sally N. Crowe Fern Michaels is one of my favorite authors, and she does it again with The Real Deal! Quinn Star (what a great name!) engaged to a boring judge, steps out of the realm of everyday life in protecting the eccentric, wacky, First Lady of The United States. However, the First Lady is right on the map about her husband. Who would know better than she that the love of her life is in trouble?I was intrigued with the tunnel that runs between the two houses in South Carolina, and I just had to laugh out loud at Quinn's (also wacky) Aunt Birdie who enjoys "doctoring" up dead people! You can always tell when reading Ms. Michael's books that she is a canine advocate. Although I'm not real intrigued with dogs myself, I do enjoy the escapades that show up in the books by this author. I highly recommend this book for a lazy summer afternoon.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. So NOT the REAL deal. By Saz This is the first of Fern Michaels I've read and I just could not take this book seriously. first of all the whole so called scam in the white house was so ridiculously far-fetched and the dialogues were so jumbled that you could literally forget how it actually started especially when the first lady rambled on and on. the characters of agent Star and Wilson were so not of women aged 40 and who have such serious top-notch jobs, they were so immature. but im willing to try more of her books...lets see.
