If there is redemption and solace to be found in these poems it is in the poet’s ability to record every iota of an all-too-common anguish in wrenching detail for all the world to see. This indeed is writing as therapy for an individual, but its brashness and truth seem to surmount mere journaling as an outlet for personal psychological relief. The poems as a group stand as a startling unforgettable testimony to an unavoidable rite of human passage, harder on some than others, but real and life changing nonetheless. Virany Written by Margaret Kell ViranyUsing vivid imagery, raw emotion and superb writing, Fiza Pathan's forty-four selected poems in The Flame Will Always Burn take us inside the heart of a young woman who is totally, irrevocably traumatized by a first experience of love transformed into utter disaster. It is not a pleasant sight, not easy to stomach, but needed to be written not only as a soul's cry for help but also as heroic self-help and a desire to help others. You will find them spellbinding to read. Some of the chapters, like "Love Comes with a Knife", "Your Reeking Flesh" and "They Found Me in a Pool of Blood," have vicious content. Others, such as"My Two Hearts", "The Flame Will Always Burn" and "I Sing My Guitar to Sleep," are gentler. The Flame Will Always Burn contains potions of rage, pain, addiction, self-loathing, murder, suicide, intoxication, infatuation and outrageousness but ends on page 90 with a prayer. In the history of medicine and literature, the disease of love sickness has baffled doctors and poets. Pathan's poems are a major contribution towards understanding it more thoroughly and comforting its millions of sufferers.
