About the Author A finalist for a National Endowment of the Arts Poetry Grant, Jane was commissioned by the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. to write and perform the one-woman play Reminiscences of Mozart by His Sister, which she also performed at Lincoln Center in New York. Her one-woman play, Miriam's Dance, in verse, about Moses' sister, was produced in New York and Los Angeles. Her most recent play, A Radical Friendship, a two-hander about Martin Luther King Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Heschel, was last seen in Los Angeles starring Ed Asner as Rabbi Heschel. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inspirational, but very laughable By Stephanie Ostlund I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I admit this book was not what I originally thought or expected. However, with that said, I did genuinely enjoy reading these poems. I found myself pleasantly, yet unexpectedly, laughing at some of the poems. “Dog Visit” was a particularly humorous poem, which I shared with a few friends who also got a good chuckle. I guess bathroom humor is funny, even if we are reading about a dog. The poem that I found most profound was “Proper Breakfast.” Robbins speaks about this old Buddha laughing even though terrible things are happening to her and her friends. While I am not personally in her position, I know too many who are. Robbins, through her laughing Buddha, reminds us to make sure we appreciate our lives. The Buddha is a sign of hope and the good that exists in a world that at times appears bleak and cumbersome. While Robbins and the laughing Buddha have many whimsical moments, there are several reflective moments as well. Many life lessons came from this Buddha. In “Rabbit Grass,” Robbins points to her Buddha watching her, “Maybe watching me/ watching them.” She also speaks to how we all watch each other, learning as we observe. Furthermore, in “Welcome,” Robbins speaks to how none of us are really what we appear to be, “Is nothing really what it seems/ Does nothing seem like what it really is?” No. Not everything is what it appears. I often find myself wearing several different faces, depending on the audience. I am not what I appear and neither is my history. Midway through this fairly short, but deeply meaningful read, I found myself thinking of the laughing Buddha as a friend or even a wise grandparent who helps guide the way through life. I want to find my own laughing Buddha to help me gain insight and show me the right path- even if it might only be my internal monologue. This short book of poems is ideal for so many people- old, young, those who seek inspiration or advice, but especially those who are seeking a good laugh.

In our everyday lives, humans are so busy and unable to appreciate the simple things in life. I love that the author took a simple object that most people would overlook and create a beautiful book of poems around it and included it in everyday life and occurrences. The book is wonderful and best if you read it in order instead of picking and choosing which poem to read first because they do tell a fascinating story. The poems, though they may be very simple on the surface are also quite deep in meaning. I was chuckling through some of them and of course finding my own laughter. One poem that struck me hard was "Painful Indecision." This is a concept in almost everybody's life that they find themselves in at some point. My favorite aspect of that poem is the confidence that the author instills in the reading that the answers will come. We all need a little guidance now and then and what better way than to look at laughter and the beauty and purity of it all to liven and lighten up our days. I would highly suggest this book to anyone who loves poetry and is looking for a little depth and a bit of laughter in life. We all could use a good chuckle. Now that I have read this book of poetry, I will fondly remember some of the beauty behind the writing every time I look at a laughing Buddha. I can't help but smile as I look at the cover of this book. Thank you for the smiles, laughter, and lessons on how to lighten life a bit Ms. Robbins. I truly appreciate your work and your talent. By Florence Chavez I loved the simplicity and honesty in Jane Marla Robbins book, "Poems of the Laughing Buddha." I was worried, not being Buddhist, that I wouldn't understand or relate to her poetry... but that was so not the case. Her words spoke truth to me, about living life to the fullest. The idea of realizing that although some things may happen that we can't control, you can still laugh at the end of the day. Her poem "Painful Indecision" spoke to me, as I too feel like I'm at a crossroads in my life and don't know what to do. I'm getting ready to turn 30, and am trying to decide whether or not expanding my family is the right thing right now. "Laugh.. Master that, and the answers will come." I only wish it were longer, but is great for anyone looking for some really good laughs or a fresh perspective on a bleak situation. I would recommend it to anyone. I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

If you want to read the Aeneid as a gripping story, Fagles's version does very well. I have just finished reading book 4, and Dido's fury, as set against the implacable higher purpose of Aeneas, has perhaps never been as vividly, even scarily, portrayed.On the other hand, it could be argued that Fagles's verse does not convey the stately or epic quality of the Latin in the way that, for instance, Fitzgerald's does. A short comparison may suffice:"sed nullis ille mouetur / fletibus aut uoces ullas tractabilis audit; / fata obstant placidasque uiri deus obstruit auris." (Vergil)"But no tears move Aeneas now. / He is deaf to all appeals. He won't relent. / The Fates bar the way / and heaven blocks his gentle, human ears." (Fagles)"But no tears moved him, no one's voice would he / Attend to tractably. The fates opposed it; / God's will blocked the man's once kindly ears." (Fitzgerald)Fitzgerald's version is closer to the Latin (other than not using the present tense), better reflects its formal nature, and achieves a Vergilian metrical effect with the three successive beats of "God's will blocked." But Fagles's free and fluid rendition is undoubtedly more engaging to the modern reader.Occasionally Fagles does introduce a modern idiom that is trite or jarring. For instance, when the sea-nymph speeds Aeneas's ship on its way in Book 10, she does so skillfully ("haud ignara modi") because she "knows the ropes".The book has a useful introduction, a few notes, and a pronouncing glossary. Fagles's postscript is, however, a tedious pastiche of quotations from previous critics and could have been omitted.

171 of 180 people found the following review helpful. The "other" side of the Trojan war By D. Roberts Publius Vergilius Maro was commisioned by Caesar Augustus to author a national epic for Rome. The work which Virgil composed for this purpose was the Aeneid. It is an epic poem that tells the story of a minor character from Homer's Iliad who leads a rag-tag band from the smouldering ruins of Troy in order to found a "New Troy" to the west: Rome. It is in the Aeneid, not the Iliad (as most people who have not read the works tend to believe) that we see the spectacle of the Trojan Horse & the famous line "I do not trust Greeks bearing gifts." The Iliad ends with the death of Hektor - before the plan of the Trojan Horse is devised by Odysseus. The Odyssey picks up after the sack of Troy. The Aeneid fills in the gaps & narrates the story of the few Trojans who escape the wrath of the Greeks. According to legend, Romulus & Remes (the two brothers who eventually founded the city itself) were descendents of Aeneas. As is usual, Fitzgerald's translation is top notch. I have read Mandelbaum's rendition as well & much prefer Mr. Fitzgerald. The book also contains a useful glossary & postscript which help elucidate the allusions to Hannibal & Cleopatra which the Romans of Virgil's day would have picked up right away, but which might be unfamiliar to modern day readers. Also, it is HIGHLY recommended that one read the Iliad & the Odyssey before embarking on Virgil's work. [...] But, for a quick answer: the reason that Juno (Hera in the Greek) has a vendetta against Aeneas is due to the fact that he is Trojan. This all derives from the judgment of Paris when Juno was "jilted" by the bribe that Aphrodite offered Paris (also a Trojan). To offer any more info at this point would be too great of a digression, but what I will say is that this work is NOT (I repeat NOT) for someone to merely pick up & dive into w/out doing his or her pre-requisite reading. Do your homework, become familiar with the myths & tales of what has gone on before, then read the Aeneid. You will be glad you did, for this is an extraordinary epic. Also, for those who harbor the ambition, the university of Oxford professor Peter Levi has recently written a wonderful, succinct biography of Virgil. "The Death Of Virgil" by Hermann Broch is a mind-blowing masterpiece as well. Indeed, one can never get enough Virgil.

Bayliss Although Virgil spent years writing the Aeneid, by his death, he felt that it was imperfect and asked that it be burned. Luckily for all concerned, his request was denied or we'd never have this epic. If you are new to Greek and Roman epics, I'd recommend starting with the Iliad and the Odyssey first. Not only will most novices find them more readable (especially the Odyssey), any reader will pick up important background information that will help immeasurably in following the Aeneid. Although I'm a huge fan of the Aeneid and have read many of the books in the original Latin, I'd suggest to most readers just to read books 1,2,4 and 6 unless you are really drawn in. It's not that the other books are not great (they are), it's just that unless you are a specialist, you won't want to read all about the battles and extra stuff -- book 4 is the love story of Dido and Aeneus and for many is the highlight of the poem. Book 6 is the trip to to the underworld which is so important to later writers and poets like Dante, TS Eliot, etc.... The fall of Troy is contained in books 1 and 2. I enjoy Fitzgerald's translation, but as an amateur Latinist, I prefer Allan Mandelbaum's translation with Moser's illustrations. When I was translating from the Latin, only Mandelbaum was so close to the original that he could help a student. I think Mandelbaum is a genius for rendering the poem so close to the original. It's unfair to call him wooden -- Virgil wrote the whole thing in Dacytlic hexameter which is hardly wooden in Latin, although it can be repetitive at times. Not to worry -- he used a lot of spondaic substititions (altering a long, short short with a long, long) to vary the meter.So, if you just want a taste, read books 1,2,4 and 6 and if you love it, by all means read the whole epic.

It had everything, air conditioning, heating, bunk beds, it was really something. This book goes into detail about how to select the type, selecting options, safety precautions.While living in a motorhome year round in the midwest is not really an option with all the freezing, I would consider it in a warmer climate and would love to be able to travel while saving money from a house payment. I feel more prepared now to look into the option

We started out with a 10 X 18 tent with a separate floor. We learned quickly that those old canvas tents shrink when it rains so it's best to pitch them with some slack. We camped with three kids for years in that old tent. Then my husband built in an old delivery van with all the comforts of home, stove, refrigerator, air conditioner, etc. (no bathroom) and we camped in that for years. About ten years ago we bought a real RV and it works real well for us. Not real large or fancy but good to go anywhere and with a generator we can camp lakeside or in a campground. Love it! We are in our 80s now and have health issues so don't go so far or for so long, but we have years of happy memories camping with our kids and people we met along the way.

I’m dreaming of something like that and even though I have two kids and kids need a stable environment sometimes I just want to pack up and leave. I bought this book to get a small taste how that would be like and it did not disappoint.

Taking shape often looks like losing shape; we are called here to trust the process of continual renewal, not knowing in the moment what shape is forming.None of us comesto destroy.We cometo take shape.The book's title poem, "Crazing," begins with the image of dry red clay crackling—apt description of aging effects on body, and on mental faculties. Aging is greeted with acceptance and even celebration. Thompson witnesses decline as a stage in transformation, paralleling plant life and human life.Cracked creek-bed red clay crackling—it's called crazing and I am crazingThe poem "White Queen" uses delightful imagery of an older woman showering silver hairpins as she moves through her confusion—choosing to see joy—choosing to see beauty—choosing to see possibilities. After being asked many, many, MANY times by friends and their friends on how I got started in the yachting industry, I realized that I wasn’t the only person interested in doing it, which is why I deemed it necessary to write a book on the subject specifically for SOUTH AFRICANS. Working on Yachts in the Mediterranean By Gordon William Although it seems this book is intended for South Africans as the title implies, it is a must read for any person from anywhere in the world who is considering working on yachts overseas. It is a well written easy to understand encyclopaedia come pocket guide on yachting which clearly outlines the pertinent requirements, necessary certificates to be obtained, earning potential as well as a guide to drawing up a favourable CV and the process to follow in how to go about obtaining work. A commendable five stars for this book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering taking a gap year (or has a child or friend considering this) and has mulled over the idea of working on a yacht while taking in the sights of places such as Antibes. Whether you are keen to be a steward or even a deckhand, this book will entertain you and inform you.

The metaphors are startling, achingly beautiful. The language is gutsy, gutteral, and beautiful. Truth, both brutal and ecstatic, resonates in every line, in every poem. I'm a great fan of Stacy's writing. It takes courage to write about hurt, shame, lost love, and love fulfilled. It takes courage to reveal the truths that lurk in the shadows of everyone's life. Stacy certainly has that kind of courage. Her poetry connects with the deepest emotions in every one of us.
