Review I think I have a new favorite children's book! I read The Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse by myself since I had to write the review, but I look forward to reading these with the kids - all three of them! I am certain all three will love them! The illustrations in The Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse in Queensland are almost better than when he was in Canada!! Absolutely stunning! During this travel, PJ gets to go to Queensland, Australia. I have to admit, Australia is somewhere I have always wanted to visit so it was fun to live the adventure through a "funny little mouse." PJ gets to go snorkeling and wake boarding. He visits the rain forest. He flies in a plane. He gets to have so many adventures and kids get to go with him as they read along! By: Life as Leels My Review: PJ Mouse is back and he is just as adorable as the first book. This time he is in Australia. This is one lucky mouse, he gets to go all through Australia (Queensland) he gets to see new people & animals and the Great Barrier Reef. (I am so jealous of this stuffed mouse) He is still adorable, lovable and I would still buy this book for any kiddo I know. This book does a great job showing the world. Check out his photo below, you know you want a PJ Mouse for yourself. I would personally buy both these books together. The loveable mouse, the fantastic illustrations and the education in the book make this an amazing book! by The Cubicle Escapee This second book in The Travels of PJ Mouse now takes place in Australia. This time rather than travelling in a fifth-wheel RV, PJ Mouse gets to go to the airport, have his passport stamped and fly in a plane! How exciting! My kids still remember the first time they took a jumbo jet to fly to Europe. It's truly impressive. Along with the book, you can purchase a PJ Mouse passport with stickers so that your child can follow along the trip and add to the passport the sticker of each place they visit. Once again, PJ experiences new things on his travelling adventures with Emily and her family. The best part was the visit to the Great Barrier Reef where PJ snorkels and meets a Loggerhead turtle. We learn more about these turtles and observe with PJ how they lay their eggs at night on the protected beach. And of course, he is rescued once again by a lorikeet bird when he gets lost. Whereas the first book in the series focused more on places, this book focuses more on animals. My son and I enjoyed it immensely. The illustrations in this book are more colorful and detailed than in the first. This series not only has a classical look to them but they are reminiscent of books such as Winnie the Pooh. It's refreshing to find writers who can write these types of books that seem to be dwindling. The next book in the series takes place in England. Another great adventure with PJ Mouse! Look out for our review next week. by Library of Clean Reads

In the Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse in Queensland, we hop on a plane with PJ and his family and head for his second adventure. This time we went to Queensland, Australia. I have always wanted to visit Australia so this was a fun little story book to read to my son about the different things PJ mouse was able to do in that far off country. In this second story, PJ seems much more at home with his family and really excited to try out all the new and fun things. As in the first, we learned a little bit more about a country and what it has to offer if we are able to visit there one day. Our favorite chapter was the one where PJ goes to the amusement park and rides the Tower of Terror. My little guy could relate to that.Again, the lovely illustrations were done by the author’s daughter in the sweet, simple style of the first book and PJ again found himself in interesting situations. I look forward to more PJ Mouse and his adventures while traveling with his family. I received a copy of the book for an honest review from I Read Book Tours and the opinions are my own.

I'd Rather Be At The Beach: Reviews By Vicki The adventure continues for PJ the Mouse in the second book in the series which takes him and his family to Queensland, Australia. This time they take a huge plane and PJ is a bit worried about how something that big can stay in the air. Soon though he is distracted, and starts having a great time. The trip takes him on great adventures. He and his family visit the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest, two places I’d love to see myself.Like in the first book in the series, the illustrations by Megan are adorable. Not only is this a really cute story that I think all children will love, I think adults as well as children will love learning all the information about Queensland.I’d definitely recommend this book as well as The Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse: In Canada

By laurathomas61 Lost and then found, PJ Mouse, the delightful talking stuffed animal, is off on another adventure. Follow him as he explores Queensland, by land and by sea.Another wonderful chapter in this adventure series. Never having been to Australia, I especially enjoyed the watercolor illustrations. PJ is so adorable and the places he explores are beautifully depicted.Follow PJ as he swims with sea turtles, hitches a ride on a Lorikeet, and winds up in a bit of a pickle.PJ was his usual adorable self and I smiled a lot, wishing I had a young one to read this to.This is another book your children will be wanting to explore again and again.I received this book for my honest review.

Among his best known stories are First Contact, Sidewise in Time, A Logic Named Joe and Exploration Team. In addition to science fiction he wrote a number of mysteries and westerns. The only hitch I found was in looking for the original Pirates of Zan. I initially found this one, and bought it, but wasn't sure if it was the same story, so bought Pirates of Zan as well. It was the same story, so get one or the other, but not both.

If you love adventure, pirates, comedy, science fiction and just darn good writing, then you will love this book! It has everything, love, romance and battles in space. I've owned a copy of this book for more years than I wish to think about and it still thrills me every time I pick it up and dive into some of the best writing ever produced. The money you spend for this book will be some of the best spent money of your life!

Pirates, in space (aka Pirates of Zan) By Manly Reading If I had not known that this was written by Murray Leinster* in 1959, I might have suspected it was early Jack Vance from a decade earlier. There is a little of that whimsy and faint sense of the ridiculous, although it's a little more heavy-handed in places than Vance generally was. All of that is something of a compliment, by the way.The Pirates of Ersatz is republished here (in the Spastic Cat edition with classic pirate cover) with what I assume are the original pulp illustrations from Astounding Science Fiction magazine. Mind you, those illustrations are...well...not very good, and could even be random public domain B&W art thrown in to match a particular scene in the book. But I applaud the sentiment, and that line art goes a long way to putting you in the right frame of mind to enjoy classic sci-fi featuring space pirates. As far as plot goes, its something of a picaresque adventure across a few worlds, involving theft, abduction, piracy, and an unforgettable scene in a high-powered lawyer's office. There are also space-Amish and space pirates, not to mention what appears to be a heavily militarised version of a space UN.The Pirates of Ersatz is a short book and a fun read. Its YA friendly while still having some reasonable depth here and there. Definitely worth a read if you see the phrase "space pirates!" and are intrigued.* not actually his real name, but not Jack Vance either

It's a long, languorous, country summer in a small Ohio town. After many years spend away as a scholar and a writer, Elizabeth Lane has returned to the setting of her most poignant childhood memories, a town steeped in her family's long history. She comes to Sunbury to work on a book but finds she is haunted by one memory in particular. It was 1905, she was eleven and in love with her cousin, Steve, painfully watching his ill-fated romance with the beautiful Damaris. Looking back, Elizabeth discovers a world of feeling what she knows belong more to adulthood than childhood, and as she sees the tragic, doomed love of Steve and Damaris, she wishes she could be a child forever. Peopled with superbly realized characters, steeped in the golden glow of an era fondly recalled, and marked by the prodigious talent displayed in ". . .And Ladies of the Club," Farewell, Summer is the moving tale of star-crossed love-innocent and elusive-and a young girl coming of age.

Farewell, Summer, by Helen Hooven Santmyer

From Publishers Weekly Written shortly before the bestselling . . . And Ladies of the Club, this slim novel tells, in the leisurely, old-fashioned style that has endeared Santmyer to many readers, about an ill-fated love affair that occurred in the town of Sunbury, Ohio, one summer, long ago. Damaris, a high-spirited beauty, returns home from a convent school and announces she wants to become a nun, an unthinkable idea to her Dutch Presbyterian family. Her cousin Steve, a dreamy young man who yearns to be a poet, comes to Sunbury after his father's death to seek his fortune. The inevitable happens. The two young people, with some encouragement from Damaris's grandfather, begin a flirtation. Steve falls hard, but is caught short by Damaris's shrewd assessment of their personalities: "We need anchors. Together we'd be driftwood." The story leads to an inevitable, disastrous conclusion. This slight, melancholic tale is more successful than Herbs and Apples, less so, of course, than Santmyer's life work ". . . And Ladies." The author shines in her loving recollections of turn-of-the-century Ohio and her exploration of the ties that bindand breakfamilies. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Crazy Cousin Bias By Craig Rowland Yesterday I finished the short novel entitled Farewell, Summer, written by Helen Hooven Santmyer. This was her last novel and it was published posthumously in 1988, two years after her death. The story is about a young woman named Elizabeth who returns to the small Ohio town of her childhood. While back home she relives the preadolescent crush she had on a young man, Steve, from Texas, and she recalls her eleven-year-old jealousy and helplessness when Steve falls in love with a teenager his own age, Damaris.Elizabeth returns home to the fictional town of Sunbury thirty years after her schoolgirl crush. It was in 1905 that she fell in love with the rodeo-riding Texan. Now maybe this was the stuff of small towns or maybe the stuff of a century ago, but as it turns out Steve and Elizabeth and Damaris are all cousins. The idea of first cousins or even second cousins falling in love with one another seems all too creepy to me. This was common in the 1800's as I do recall somewhat incestuous pairings-up in pioneer dramas, but in 1905? In small-town Ohio?I found the funniest moments reading about demented cousin Tobias, known as either "Bias" or "Tobe", and his futile search trying to recall where he buried one thousand dollars in gold coins. Nobody in the novel wants to hire him for odd-job yard work since he always ends up skiving and digging up their property.Santmyer once again evokes the feeling of "being there". This is a comment I read often as I research her work and seek published book reviews. I am among the crickets and the neglected grass that tickles the ankles. I can see the fireflies buzzing around when I read of the evening walks Steve and Damaris embark upon. I can hear the sound of young Elizabeth rollerskating across the pavement, clack-clacking everytime she crosses a pavement crack. There is one more novel in the Santmyer oeuvre; I started reading it today and have already fallen in love with it.

Just like "And Ladies of the Club" and "Herbs and Apples", Helen Hooven Santmyer has written another truly remarkable novel. The characters and descriptions in this book are so vivid that you actually feel like you've been transported back in time. This is the story of a small-town romance as seen through the eyes of a young girl. It is beautifully told and will bring you laughter and tears.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Delicate Shadows By Bookworm 426 Maybe I'm a sucker for a slender young man in a celluloid collar leaning tenderly over a Gibson girl, but this novel evoked memories of my grandmother's time: silver-handled brushes on a lace doily, a hint of rosewater eau de toilette, and a time that led people through life in measured steps instead of shoving them relentlessly forward. Santmyer's evocation of those lost, languid shadows is richly nuanced, authentic, and delightful.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Delightful and eye-opening By Brain Jazz "Reading Mary Anne Dorward's book on Ecuador is like discovering a series of letters from a generous and observant friend - the old-fashioned, thoughtful letters people used to write before the "convenience" of texts and email made us all so lazy. Here you'll find a guide that is both practical and heartfelt, full of humor and earthy wisdom. If you are traveling to Ecuador, it's a must-read. If you are considering relocating or retiring there - even more emphatically so! But even if you're staying home, it's a delightful, eye-opening adventure all on its own - one that reminds us that inspiration is to be found in day-to-day observation and the journey itself is the destination. Enjoy your trip!"- Georgia James, Playwright & Poet

By Barry Bostwick “If you are looking for a travel guide that explores both the inner and outer landscape of wondrous ECUADOR, you’re in the right place. Mary Anne Dorward goes traveling in such profound ways, creating a new definition of her self while experiencing the culture of Ecuador in such a fresh and insightful way. Not only is this a book of practical “how to’s” but even more importantly, many useful “how not to’s.” Mary Anne is a seeker of truth and lives by the motto “Know where you’re going in life, you may already be there.” Then she takes you there, as only a person who’s eyes are open to the clues and mysteries, dangers and joys, of such an inviting culture that is ECUADOR.”— Barry Bostwick, Actor

Makes me wonder if the writers really have been on the ground. example: One camping said that they don't jacuzzi anymore since 10 years, but Lonely planet still right that their jacuzzi is a must !!!!The prices are not accurate, and we found out that few restaurants don't exist anymore....I always found Lonely Planet as the most reliable travel guide books... but I start to doubt it !

This is not to say that all of the information is tailored this way, but I found it less useful than guide books from other publishers. I also found the book to be geared a bit more toward the European traveler. The fonts is very small, so it makes referencing difficult.

Could use more detail on sights beyond the most popular. But that would make it heavier. Some guides include all of Scandinavia. SO those are either bulkier or less detailed. So all in all a very good guide if you only need Norway.

The plot and how all the poems fit together to form one story. It is absolutely amazing. I am so glad I read this book. Highly highly highly recommend it even to those who are like me and poetry is not always their favorite genre. She did a fabulous job.
