I've compared the content to some other series my friend loaned me and I think this is at least as good. I like that it tends to offer just top 15 or 20 because I feel like that makes deciding and planning easier than if I have a full catalog of everything to do in a given country.

In the Wilderness: A Novel, by Robert Smythe Hichens, Leonhard Martin Eisenschmid

From the Back Cover Cited in Adirondack Life as one of the twenty-five most collectible books about the Adirondacks ever to appear, these essays were first published in book form in 1878. Warner's main theme is the small, often-ludicrous figure that the human being cuts in the wilderness. His urbane satire takes the starch out of 'the tin-can and paper-collar tourists' who were beginning to flock to the Adirondacks. Warner's love of nature, combined with his humor and social satire, makes this book as good a read now as it was more than a century ago.

About the Author American author, editor, and the first president of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Warner’s writings are marked by gentle humour and elegance.

The narrator, a neighbor of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe, describes his experiences on camping trips, hunting trips and the like. They're very different essays from the modern variety; today they'd probably be classified as short stories, instead. Although Warner does make clear his distaste for humanity's killing wildlife, he does not go into deep issues as is the fashion in today's popular essays. He just tells generally peaceful, sometimes humorous stories. I can best describe them as relaxing. I wouldn't recommend this for someone looking for piercing nineteenth-century insight into life, but I would for someone who wants to curl up with a Victorian story.

By zChris As a new Kindle owner, I was curious to find some free books (still hoping to recoup that $200 cost!) and stumbled upon this one. As a lover of the Adirondacks, aspiring 46er (30 down!), and amateur ADK historian, stumbling upon this gem was a treat!I had read the essay on Old Mountain Phelps before, so that one was no surprise. But the rest of these short stories were a wonderful portrait of what the mountains once were. As an earlier reviewer commented, the story of the deer hunt was an outstanding "thriller" that had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. All in all, I'd recommend this to anyone stuck in an office who'd rather be pitching a tent out in the mountains. It's about as good as one can get during the week!Bonus: The style of the essays has made them an excellent companion (via text-to-speech) for my morning ride!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Pleasant read about old ADK By A Customer Warner writes a handleful of essays about the Adirondacks Keene Valley and High Peaks area. Essays have very relaxed feel and Warner's description of the wilderness makes you want to pick up and go camping. An underlying theme throughout is mans destructive abilities toward the natural world. These remarks are are not dwelled upon however. One memorable essay is his description of a deer being pursued by hounds; all from the deers prespecctive. Another is a story of a legandary hidden cave on Nipple Top which the author ventures to with the wily Old Man Phelps.

Kit Devigny could have loved rock guitarist Noah St. John. Their friendship burned with the promise of intense passion and searing tenderness until the night Noah deliberately shattered her heart. Noah knows that he destroyed something precious the night he chose to betray Kit, but he'd rather she hate him than learn his darkest secret. All he has left is his music. It's his saving grace, but it doesn't silence the voices that keep him up at night. When a media error sees Noah and Kit dubbed the new "it" couple, Kit discovers that her chance at the role of a lifetime hinges on riding the media wave. Wanting-needing-to give Kit this, Noah agrees to play the adoring boyfriend. Only the illusion is suddenly too real, too painful, too beautiful . . . and it may be too late for the redemption of Noah St. John.

Needs more redemption By K Lauren When I read the premise for Rock Redemption which featured bad boy guitarist Noah and talented actress Kit, I admit to feeling indecisive. I wasn't sure if I'd want to read about their story especially since it was obvious that Noah really did something horrible to Kit (I guessed correctly what it was). It just seemed like it would be hard to read and root for such a relationship, and particularly for Noah himself, who was cruel and self destructive. But I wanted to see where one of my favorite writers would take me....I wanted to see where and how she could make this work as a viable romance novel. And so I gave it a chance and pre-ordered this book. After finishing this book (in one sitting), I figured out a few things. One, while this wouldn't be on my list of books I'd read over and over, I think that Ms. Singh did a good job with Kit, particularly how she handled Noah's issues. She was mature, steadfast and loving. It was real. Many times in difficult situations, we see writers over-dramatizing people's reactions and events to make it blown out of proportion; to add to the drama and "oomph" factor. But with this one, it wasn't that way. I think if anything, Ms. Singh showed us readers how it is to really love someone, with all their flaws and imperfections. And how loving someone isn't about focusing on the hurt they caused but understanding that to love is a choice we make daily and how we react sometimes matters more in determining the outcome of any situation. After all, nobody really wants to be hurt...which is what I liked about Kit. She was so brave in fighting for her love and still finding and knowing her self worth. As I said, her character was written very maturely.Another thing I figured was that while I applaud Kit's bravery, as a person looking from the outside in, I can't quite let myself believe in a happy ever after between these two, which is what I want in a romance. I suppose it's because Ms. Singh did too good a job in making Noah out to be so broken and to my view, a bit dastardly. He was horrible, not just to Kit but to most women. To me, a lot of his actions were really unlikable and selfish. I really don't see the attraction of why Kit would want him and only him, aside from the fact that he was beautiful to look at, and of course talented with a guitar. I think there was too much emphasis on how handsome Noah was, and maybe that was the focus because his character leaves a lot to be desired. Noah had too many issues he doesn't deal with head on and frankly, I don't know how she could trust him to not hurt her again, he is too messed up.Ms. Singh is a wonderful storyteller. But as a fan and a romantic, I wished for more headway regarding Noah's issues. I wished that he could have shown more of his goodness and redemption. It just felt rushed towards the end of the book, so much so that the romance part of the book was missing and it was too much a dose of reality. Love has no guarantees but well, I wouldn't mind reading more of it in my romance novels. Just saying.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. 3 - "It meant everything." Stars! By Miss Claire L. Robinson 3 - "It meant everything." Stars!Nalini Singh is an author who I have heard a lot about, seen many of my reading friends be excited about, and one that I have never read anything by, previous to starting Rock Redemption. Book three in the Rock Kiss series, this is basically a friends who fall out, working back to being friends, before eventually (and I mean eventually) admitting they have much stronger feelings for each other and taking the step of moving onto being lovers. This book wasn't a struggle too read, in fact I moved through it quite swiftly, and the author certainly has an easy to engage in style, but I would be lying if I said there was much about Noah and Kit's story that offered up anything new or unique from any of the other hundreds of messed up rock star books that are out there, or the ones I have read personally."Just be my friend... Don't give up on me. Please don't."It is a given that Noah's actions at the beginning of the book were exceedingly stupid, but it was a struggle to feel any real emotional connection between the pair of them as they tried to work past his actions and rebuild their friendship for most of the book. For want of a better word it all seemed very dry, and the instances where they do share parts of themselves with the other lacked any real emotional depth for me, and at points it almost felt like I was reading a plot outline rather than a fleshed out book. But I made it to the end, and without any real loss of attention, so the author must have some sort of magic skill in keeping you engaged. But it certainly didn't meet the expectations that I had going into it.Broken or not, he was hers and she wouldn't give up on him. This isn't a bad book, I just think that I expected something a little deeper and more meaningful from an author of Nalini Singh's stature. If you are looking for a sex-fest, this is certainly not going to be a title you are going to get a lot from, this is pretty much in the Friend-Zone until around the last 25% mark. I am not someone who needs sex in their books as long as the story is good, but I'll be honest and say I think I would have been more invested in them as a couple if they had taken that step a little earlier in the story.I would read more from the author after finishing Rock Redemption there was something about the writing that kept me interested until the end, I think I would maybe try some of the author's work from another genre though.ARC Generously provided via TRSOR Promotions in exchange for the above honest review.

Did I miss something? Was I just in a weird mood? I haven’t come to an exact conclusion yet. The first book in the series, Rock Addiction, was disappointing for me. However, I really loved the second, Rock Hard. When I got this book, I was so hopeful. Unfortunately, the story was a bit of a let down for me.Even though her famous parents could have opened doors for her, Kit Devigny chose to struggle her way through the business like anyone else. It was during her lean waitressing days that she met the fledgling band, Schoolboy Choir, and became fast friends. Today, the boys of Schoolboy Choir are international rock stars and Kit is well on her way to a major Hollywood breakthrough. In that time, Kit and guitarist Noah St. John have become very close – their friendship taking on a new intimacy. Kit knows all about Noah’s manwhore tendencies but is all in and wants to take that final step towards having a romantic relationship with her best friend.Noah loves Kit with his whole heart but won’t let Kit be damaged by his own demons. He orchestrates a scene (yes, it’s probably what you are thinking) to ensure that Kit won’t ever want that kind of relationship with him. He’s so successful that they don’t speak for two years. Two long years that Noah’s been mourning the loss of Kit. He finally reaches out when he’s hit rock bottom in a dingy crack motel on the verge of making some seriously bad decisions. No matter the heartbreak that Noah caused her, Kit loves him too much to let him cause himself harm.Noah wants desperately for Kit to forgive him enough to allow him back in her life even though he knows he doesn’t deserve it. Kit desperately wants to let Noah back in but her heart can’t forget the damage that he caused. A confluence of events has them suddenly faking a romance for the tabloids. While Noah sees this as a way to atone for his misdeeds, faking it is slowly killing Kit’s heart. It’s only when Noah is finally convinced to let Kit in on his secrets that their path to healing can begin.I love a good unrequited love story. The longing from both sides is palpable and touching. Kit is completely sympathetic in loving and giving her all to a troubled man but she stops just shy of being a doormat. After their reconnection, she is very upfront about what she can and cannot give to him. On the other hand, Noah is such a ball of self-loathing that even knowing his secrets can’t excuse his terrible behavior. They were sad and shocking but he couldn’t trust Kit enough till the last quarter of the book. Now, that brings me to the issues that I had with the story. For the majority of the book, Kit is heartbroken and Noah is tormented. We are told this about every other page. Then there is the fake relationship which I loathe as a way to bring a couple together – especially a couple with so many issues. Then to throw in a stalker sub-plot for conflict was totally unnecessary. I would have loved to see Noah’s issues addressed earlier and watched the couple navigate that. The book basically ends when Noah comes clean. I just didn’t buy the HEA.I will continue to try to read this series and hope for the best because Singh is one of my favorite paranormal romance authors.Rating: C*ARC courtesy of TKA Distribution via NetGalley

Dante, Petrarch, and Cervantes found love in women, so idealized, that each woman became real in life and emblematic on the themes of universal love. These, and many more poets, throughout the centuries, also worked hard to master the art of poetical structures, especially the sonnet. Each, in his own way, believed in the reality of love embodied in Beatrice, Laura, and Dulcinea, and, each poet acted as if that love were fulfilled in one form or another. In the case of the little known American poet, John, he was a highly acclaimed poet. In reading his sonnets, the reader quickly realizes that John has more than mastered the art form of poetry. His sonnets are among the more beautifully written, and very powerful in imagery. Yet, it seems, John never mastered the art of love or of lovemaking, or of life itself, or life’s values. He complains about his shortcomings as well as those of the women with whom he had coitus or intercourse--never a satisfying experience, though he was the father of five legitimate children. His women were those as seen through the eyes of Sancho Panza: except, that, John had a wrong-headed compulsion to pursue them while unable to make proper assessments of who they really were. In comparison, Don Quixote’s corpulent side-kick knew exactly who and what Dulcinea was, from the very first encounter at the inn. Laura Lee, on the other hand, was sexually extraordinaire. She did not write about an ideal lover, and her virtue was not in writing Petrarchan or Shakesperean sonnets. Her strength was in acknowledging her libido, and in knowing, acquiring, and appreciating what she got and what she gave. By indulging in love-making, she also delighted her partners who were neither macho nor mythical—just loving and lovable males. And, her poetry flowed out of her in a language that continues to be cohesive, natural and beautiful. She was full of life and loved every bit of it, joyfully.

Whereas, for me, at least, I think of poetry as romantic, sometimes sexy, but mostly that it is beautiful to read and enjoy. Not so, in the book called My Last Mistress by John. Was it written in the later years of his life as somewhat of a memoir? Had he learned, realized, how he had lived his life and felt some compulsion to seek, perhaps, forgiveness? The book is divided into 5 sections: The Will to Wander, To One Too Near, Exploration and Defeat, At Last the Dawn, and Ending and Aftermath... A number of poems are entitled as if they were written for specific people and indeed sometimes are answers to an individual as if he had received some missive from that individual and chose to respond in poetry form. But the reader only gets to know the Initial: H, P, etc. I was therefore somewhat hesitant to read, to try to understand, and often read only further because I was compelled to read on...From the poignancy of young love in "Musings at a Lakeside Inn", or "Night Over Jersey", we follow John through the beginnings of temptation such as with "Secretaries... Then in "Jealousy" the cynic starts to appear as he has passed from temptation on to feelings of rightness, or desire...or need. But reality starts to enter when he pens "Adultery...But like the publisher suggests on the back of the book, John's words are found through his muse indeed, but with love, he's still the worse... For me, this was clearly demonstrated as he wrote the title poem, "My Last Mistress" which appeared earlier this week on my blog...Check it out if you haven't yet read... At this point, he has lost all sense of emotional stability, as he discusses his last mistress with a woman he is now trying to seduce. If she was disgusted as I was with what he said, she didn't have dinner with him that night...But is there hope for John? Is this unique book really his life story in poetic form? And does he end life still looking for something--a fantasy he will never find? Or does he one day reach a point when he has no choice but to look backward and reflect on his failings, his joys, his triumphs? Readers will be intrigued to follow John's road--some of his stories are sad, some will amaze you with his inability to see himself at that time, others will be funny, such as the adultery poem--if it wasn't so close to reality...Funny, you know, the poetry of the 70s might just have led to what is routinely occurring in today's world... Except most hide it, deny it, or else Instagram it to the world! I think it was brave of John to create the story of his life--or, if not biographical, to be able to look at the lives of men and put it before readers in such delightful verse! While John is the more thought-provoking of the two writers, Laura Lee presents as a bold, unapologetic woman who happily shared her thoughts. I was most intrigued by her poem regarding her death which was posted earlier this week in my blog. I would admit that was probably due to my age and love of books, LOL!Frankly, Lee's poetry is too allegorical for my taste. I've become so literal in reading so many books that I have come to dislike having to figure out what the author wants the reader to understand about her words. Take for instance, "Pop the Cork" Sure, I get the gest of it--the romantic tale in which she shares her feelings and desires... but when I read, I don't want to guess...so, please, could anybody help me understand what "Pop the Cork" means if it doesn't mean what I think it means...LOL... Still, when you read such a verse, it does tend to haunt you, wanting you to explore whether this is really, after all, just a story about a genie in the bottle perhaps??? Wanting to be taken home by the Captain! But then when she got explicit, it was very explicit... such as with "Desire." Please note that the poems mentioned are included as part of my review, on my blog...You may want to get a better sampling by visiting...And, of course, I was pleased to read about Midnight, with quite a different story... my favorite, of course...This book of poetry is refreshing in its honesty, its depth of emotional sharing, and its topical interest. While some poems are erotic, most, instead, are a revelation of the writers' personal emotions about their individual lives and those within their surroundings. Nothing is sacred, yet it is in no way a form of content that is not suitable for adults and some young adults. If you enjoy poetry, I wholeheartedly invite you into this memorable merge of the lives of one woman and one man, speaking out to readers in the best way they know how to express their feelings. Their sexuality is the reality of being wholly man and wholly woman, sharing what has been important to them, respectively. For me it was revelatory...and memorable...GABixlerReviewsPaperback provided by publisher

All I can say is that David Kappele knows how to wax poetic and then finish with a solid left punchline. This is a fine book to read and then leave on your coffee table. But be careful, someone might just spit beer on your floor when she/he gets to the end of the poem called "NFL Dreams". :)

Very useful for the main sights By fenneke Since it focusses on a couple of places extensively, with handy, informative city walks and lots of info about eating, sleeping and transportation, but skips entire parts of the Scandinavic countries, this guide is very good, and perhaps even more useful than the Lonely Planet, if you only visit those places described in the book and not the rest. Not all major destinations are listed, e.g. Trondheim and Göteborg are missing, hence my 4 out of 5 stars, but even with those cities missing I though it a very useful book. The city walks are excellent and somehow we often ended up in restaurants that were listed.I bought the ebook version which was very convenient on both phone and tablet, the only disadvantage being that you have to browse quite a bit between the city walk maps and the (very informative) written description.Places described in this guide book:- Copenhagen- Near Copenhagen (Roskilde and a few other sights)- Central Denmark (Ærø, Ærøskøbing, Odense)- Jutland (Aarhus, Legoland, Jelling, Himmelbjerget, Silkeborg (but oddly enough no mention is made of the main sight of the town, the Silkeborg Museum with the naturally mummified corpse of the Tollund man), Ribe)- Oslo- A tour suggestion via Flåm, Aurland and the Undredal- Sognefjord- Gudbrandsdal Valley and Jotunheimen Mountains- Bergen- South Norway (Stavanger, Setesdal, Hovden, Kristiansand)- Stockholm- Near Stockholm (Sigtuna, Uppsala)- Stockholm's Archipelago- Southeast Sweden (Växjö, Glass Country, Kalmar, Öland)- Helsinki- Tallinn

We skipped the expensive, shorter excursion offered by the cruise ship and saved enough to pay for all of our tour books. We visited all of the Scandinavian countries and used this book before docking in each major city, as well as in Tallinn, Estonia. Warning: the book makes you want to go back for more!
