There is something very odd about Stella's neighbour. Rose leads a peculiar, Amish-like existence, refusing to have electricity in her Paris apartment. She teaches piano during the day, and in the evenings she makes wonderful quilts by candlelight. Birds love Rose. They come to her window, they follow her in the street - but other neighbours are suspicious, and she has enemies. Stella is drawn to her. The more she gets to know her, the more mysterious she becomes. Rose seems to be at the centre of some very disturbing events.

Candlepower..."Weaves a magic spell"

...is "so original that it takes my breath away".

Enjoy the magic By ManicScribbler Having read and enjoyed 'A Paris Haunting' by the same author last year, I was very pleased to come across 'Candlepower' while browsing favourite authors on Amazon. I downloaded it and began reading it almost at once, finding myself rapidly drawn in to the intriguing storyNarrated by Stella, all events are filtered through her consciousness, but as seems to happen with Doolaege's novels, the POV character takes something of a back seat in order to turn the spotlight on other characters. There are some marvellous characters in 'Candlepower', though none more delightful than Rose. Of course, the other thing this author does so well is evoke the atmosphere of a Paris unseen by tourists, making the reading a satisfying, visual experience. The question of who and what Rose is permeates the entire story. She's an ethereal being and I spent a lot of time wondering if she was meant to be real. She lives alone in a Paris apartment opposite Stella, teaching and playing beautiful music, creating exquisite patchwork quilts by candlelight (she shuns electricity) and talking to the birds. It is when Stella's canary, Topaz escapes through the window that Stella first meets Rose. Unable the resist the attraction Rose has over all living creatures, Topaz leaves his tree and flies into her hands, and that's the beginning of a rather haunting friendship. There is a beautiful poignancy about the way this story unfolds around the two almost-tragic females who find friendship in a world in which they are both slightly out of kilter. Bilingual Stella escapes from an overbearing mother, academic father, not-too-loveable brother and an unhappy love affair, into a Paris apartment she purchases with her beloved grandmother's legacy. She yearns to love and be loved and after meeting Rose, embarks on another love affair with Rose's friend, Olivier, ignoring all the hints that her fragile heart is again at serious risk.Of Rose, Stella tells her father, "People are drawn to her, but somehow they're scared of her at the same time." This sums up everyone's attitude towards the tormented Rose and the reader longs to know more about her and for the other characters to understand and accept this strange and rather wonderful creature in the same way the birds do with their unquestioning adoration. It's always difficult, when writing a review, to say enough to interest other readers but not too much to give away 'spoilers', so I'm reluctant to say more about the events and mar the reading experience for others. And it's a reading experience I highly recommend. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it and when I was reading, I was mesmerised by the often grim Parisian atmosphere and the colourful, diverse characters. The story is beautifully told and weaves a magical spell that held me enthralled from beginning to end. Read it - enjoy the magic.

By Amazon Customer This story is a tapestry of its own, mixing in vivid landscapes of Paris life with emotional descriptions of living in a foreign city. It is a magical story told by a talented musician named Stella. Stella is in the process of finding what she really wants out of life in her career, all while avoiding being lonely at the same time. She is from a family of dual backgrounds, her mother is French and her father is English. Living in Paris after her grandmother leaves her an inheritance, Stella works in an office, but her true passion occurs at home with her guitar.Stella lives with her beautiful conarry Topaz, who flies free one day out of her open window. She races outside to find him being coaxed out of the tree by a mysterious woman named Rose. This is where the story truly begins. Rose is a peculiar woman who sews beautiful coats and quilts, and she also teaches piano lessons. Rose also does not use ANY electricity. There is something quite attractive about Rose and almost all are drawn to her, people and animals alike. We also meet Oliver through Rose, who Stella finds very attractive but in a totally different way. There is some definite heartbreaking moments throughout this story. However, by the time I was over halfway finished with book, I was pleasantly surprised by the feeling of optimism exploding from within Stella.I was captivated by Ms. Doolaege's writing and how she draws you into her story, feeding you with each passage. I truly could not put this book down and stayed up late several nights engrossed in its pages. There seems to be a continuation story that can be made from the ending of this one, and I will anxiously wait for its publication.

She meets her neighbor Rose. Stella is fascinated with Rose and the unlikely pair become friends. Rose is a bit mysterious, some find her (Rose) a bit odd. But not Stella, she is captivated by her "uniqueness".Rose does not believe in modern luxuries, such as electricity. But she does have a love of birds, and making quilts. As the two become friends, Stella faces some of her inner struggles, and even falls for a young man.A well written fascinating story, told from Stella's point of view. I really liked Stella, she has some inner feelings she must comes to terms with. Rose is very likable. The more I read about her the more I liked her. And I loved the "mystique" around Rose.I don't do spoilers so I won't say too much more. The story is very original, the prose flows with perfection on each page, and the atmosphere drew me in. Set in Paris added "charm" I really liked, the setting.Overall I feel that Candlepower is a definite five star read and book lovers (or all genres) will greatly enjoy this fascinating, captivating, magical tale.*This book was a gift.

100 Things To Do In The Twin Cities Before You Die, by Tom Weber

About the Author Tom Weber is a host for Minnesota Public Radio News. Originally from the Chicago area, he was familiar with cold and winter. But upon moving here at the start of a two-week, below-zero cold snap, Tom quickly embraced all things Minnesota. He lives in St. Paul and generally likes to spend his free time outside (even in the winter) and enjoys biking, hiking, running and cross-country skiing. He was also happy to learn, during his research for this book, that there are still plenty of places in the Twin Cities still to discover. This is this first book.

Everyone who visits the Twin Cities – even those who have been there before – should give it a read. I hope that the publisher is featuring this book prominently at the airport.

Lee What better way to discover a fun 'to-do" list in the Twin Cities by Minnesota Public Radio "The Daily Circuit" expert, Tom Weber? Fun, quick book that provides great tips on what things you need to explore, eat, see and do.

Was looking for a quick read that would give them a sense of the Twin Cities. We ended up doing a couple of activities outdoors I wouldn't have thought of. A lot of the suggestions are pretty obvious if you know the area already. He puts a humorous spin on them though. There were definitely things I'd never heard about before, like the art festival in June that runs from sunset until sunrise. A lot of the entries make you want to get outdoors.

I saw the segment on Channel 6 about this book and had to get it. My experience with self- and co-published books, is that they're marginal in quality, editing, and content. Not the case here. Ms. Posh did a great job of capturing all there is to do in Milwaukee and did it with a great writing style, and no editing blunders. Many of the things listed, I've done, but I've found many new places and things to check out. Many interesting facts are presented too, such as: the Milwaukee Wave is the oldest continually operating professional soccer franchise in North America! Who knew?? She provides suggested itineraries for various scenarios too. All-in-all, a great book, whether you've lived here all your life, or are just passing through for a few days.

His dad has lost his job and now the education he'd almost taken for granted is out of reach. Although his mother and sister volunteer to sacrifice so he can complete his degree he insists on going to work to make money for his family.Set much like the Horatio Alger stories I love, this one features an older fellow -- he's 20 or 21. In any event while in college our hero was a captain of the rowing team and quite an athlete. He disdained reporters. That ends up being the only job he is remotely qualified for however. He does not start out as a Great Shakes reporter however. In fact, if there's a mistake a man can make, our hero does so.I rather liked that he was perfect. He was honest though, even to his failings. The story revolves around a train workers strike and is quite exciting. The story seems true to life, and is great fun. I'm glad I read it. For those who consider reporting "easy", well, read this for an insider's look at the field. The story held my interest and was enjoyable.

"This is a story that is based on what I "hope" was a really intense dream I had. I find myself dead and standing in a line on an ancient looking rope bridge. I've never been very good at waiting in a line so I slowing begin to talk my way ahead of the others in line. One of the first people I encounter is a young women who is very upset that she had been killed by a drunk driver who had never been caught. When I tried to console her, I was transported from the bridge to where she had been killed and was able to cause the killer to be captured and punished. Returning to the bridge I found her no longer angry but happy and at peace. Somehow, I had changed her and thought how cool it was to have done that. I meet many more people and experience many more adventures as I did with the woman. Some of the people I am able to help and some I can't, but was somehow able to make very small to very drastic changes along the way. The story ends at the gates of both heaven and hell however my story ends differently from everyone else's on the bridge."

In Private Hercules McGraw: Poems of the American Civil War, poem by poem, Private McGraw, each poem's speaker, shares with us his journey through the landscapes of the American Civil War. McGraw, a Confederate soldier and racist, steps into the War in order to assure that slavery will exist long enough for him to purchase a slave with hopes to impress his love, Martha. As McGraw treks through the blood and mire, experiencing both triumph and tragedy, he begins to transform into a man of peace and compassion - a man who no longer sees a black man or a white man; he simply sees a man - a fellow, a brother.

There's a story woven through them, and it gains in power as it goes along. The most impressive aspect of the poems, to my mind, is the way that war humanizes Hercules and sets his priorities straight. It brings to mind that experience, that many of us have had at some point in our lives, of realizing that there are very few things of real value in life, but those that remain are love, relationships, and the other gifts that we sometimes take for granted.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hercules is Only Human! By Robert Redd I am really not much of a poetry reader as my 12th grade english teacher could probably tell you. That's why when S. Thomas Summers contacted me about reading his book of Civil War related poetry I had to give it some thought. I'm glad I did because this turned out to be quite the little gem!In a series of brief, mostly one page or less, poems we follow the growth and maturation of young Private Hercules McGraw. McGraw and two friends enlist in the Confederate army. McGraw joins because he feels he has to own a slave in order to win the heart and hand of Martha Lane. McGraw here clearly puts the cause of the war as slavery; "the new president up in Washington is planning on making all them free".The three young soldiers end up at Shiloh where two key events take place for young Hercules: he shoots his first Yankee and he also finds his friend Nate dead on the battlefield. Seeing his friend dead leads Hercules to question his motives for fighting. As the war progresses Hercules finds himself becoming more soldier like. He feels he no longer has an opinion and just does as he is told. It was best not to think. The poem Regrets contains my favorite lines from the book: ....Walked into the war thinking I was doing some good but the war never noticed I was there. I could of sneaked off, slunk into some hole and nobody would have guessed I was gone. Then I could have talked to Jesus again---It is in this poem that Hercules and his friend Willy sneak off eventually joining a regiment that ended up in Gettysburg. While at Gettysburg Hercules compares Abraham Lincoln to Satan and also continues to grow up. He further realizes he doesn't need Martha Lane and that fighting a was so he can own a slave to impress her was not worth it. She was not worth it. During Pickett's Charge Hercules witnesses his friend Willy get shot in the head and die. Hercules is happy for him.
