This book comprises inspired songs, poetry and stories about my life and the lives of others that God has miraculously changed. The majority of the stories are about events that have happened to me. Inspired words to songs were given to me during times of trials, struggles, during prayer and worship. Sometimes I would hear a message preached and I'd hear the words to a song or a poem about it in my heart. With many of the words to songs I would hear music along with it. May the words of the songs, poetry and stories bless your life as much as they have blessed me. Life is full of challenges. Jesus has made my life so much better. I hope He has or will make yours better too.

During times of prayer and fellowship with the Lord, He inspired me to write. (Sometimes I could hear music to the words of the songs) Most of the poems and songs and short stories are about how God delivered me from my kidnappers, from deep depression, from death, (my kidnappers were going to kill me and one summer I almost drowned). He delivered me from suicidal tendencies (and a couple of attempts to take my own life because I wanted to find peace in death, but there is no peace in death if we haven't accepted Jesus.)He also delivered me from a shame based nature, (a relative told me constantly how worthless I was. "You're not worth the salt in your bread.") He healed me of migraine headaches, and the deep pain of rejection that that I felt from the desertion of my father (he knew our plight but refused to help his own children), He even kept me from starvation. After my mother's death I was left alone (as a teenager) in our home with three siblings without utilities, or food. My mother made me promise that I'd take care of my two younger sisters and brother if she died. At night we stole water from the neighbors. The Youth Center Director helped me find a job that paid just enough to purchase food. There was never enough money to have the utilities turned on or get the busted water piped fixed.I give God the praise! After I gave my life to Jesus and accepted His free gift of grace, He forgave my sins and delivered me from a life of tremendous pain, struggle, fear and misery! Jesus introduced Himself to me as Daddy Jesus, as my Husband, as a Friend, and as the God who is more than enough. He can do anything or fix any situation or problem I encounter. I've never been loved like He loves me. Jesus is the one who laid down His life to give me life. Once He sent an angel into my room when I fell into the deep dark pit of depression. He blessed me to have a sound mind after my mind slipped out like a drawer. (Mental breakdowns were common in my family) Hallelujah! I praise Him for all He has done.I want you to know that God is real, His word is true,Believe God's word, let it work for you.On the cross, His redemptive work for us was finished,God's love and power can never be diminished. They nailed Him to the cross, Jesus took stripes on His back,His blood flowed as He defeated satan's deathly attacks!Receive God's word, it is your daily bread,Be healed from the sole of your feet to the top of your head!Feed on His powerful word everyday,God's word is medicine it will heal you in every way!Don't say, "How will I make it? I just don't know how."Trust in Jesus, receive Him now!It is the best thing you'll ever do,Trust Him to save and deliver you.He loves you so much,Respond, surrender, your life let Jesus touch!Let Jesus touch, your life let Him touch,He loves you, He loves you so much.

Winner of the 2014 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Fiction

When Jessica, a young air force drone pilot in Nevada, is tasked with launching a missile against a suspected terrorist halfway across the world, she realizes that though women and children are in the crosshairs of her screen, she has no choice but to follow orders. Ethan, a young Wall Street quant, is involved in a more bloodless connection to war when he develops an algorithm that enables his company's clients to profit by exploiting the international instability caused by exactly this kind of antiterrorist strike.

Though only minor players, the actions of these two people have global ramifications that tear lives apart - including their own. When Jessica finds herself discharged from the service and Ethan makes an error that costs him his job, both are set adrift, cast out by a corrupt system and forced to take the blame for decisions they did not make.

In And West Is West, Childress has crafted a terrifyingly real scenario that takes listeners into the lives of these characters living in different worlds yet bound together by forces beyond their control.

Wonderful relevant story that will leave you examining your own world By Margaret This excellent, fast-paced novel, which won the Barbara Kingsolver Pen Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, tells its larger story of government and financial corruption through engaging, unique characters. In this twisty tale, the reader experiences how easy it is for a moral individual to become a cog in a corrupt organization's schemes. And how quickly that same individual can become a victim the Powerful want to destroy. The main characters are Ethan, a "quant" who writes software to make billions for his Wall Street firm without adding any value to society, and Jessica, a US Army sergeant who remotely pilots war drones that drop bombs on Somalia. The book moves back and forth between their stories, all the while maintaining your fascination with both. Wall Street and the US Army drone program would be interesting enough settings on their own, but the plots expand to include the international art world, the US prison system, the Nevada desert, a dysfunctional wealthy family, an aging hippy couple, and more. The author navigates these diverse worlds with ease. Each character, place and situation is believable, interesting, and memorable.I highly recommend this superbly written book. At little more than 300 pages, it's a swift, engrossing read that leaves you thinking about the real issue that faces us all: if an individual can't change a corrupt system, how do they live a moral life?

Long-distance consequences and face-to-face realities By Paul Mastin Behind the headlines, the lives and loves of today's young people look a little different than they used to. In Ron Childress's And West is West, two young people in positions that were unimaginable just a generation ago have to recreate their lives after they are pushed out the door in their respective positions. Ethan writes the code that helps his bank make billions on arbitrage trading of foreign currency. A decimal error (or a planted decimal error) loses the bank millions in seconds, and he finds himself jobless. Jessica sits in a desert warehouse in Nevada flying drone missions in the Middle East. When one mission goes wrong, she leaves the Air Force and lives under the radar.Childress brings these two parallel stories together in an interesting way. Readers will dwell on consequences, family histories, and the realities of the fast-moving, accelerated way the modern workforce can become distant from their actual work. Part of me became frustrated that Jessica and Ethan's stories had so little to do with each other. Even though Childress introduced the personal link rather late, he ultimately makes it work. The story of the characters' lives does not to be as epic as the roles they played, or potentially played, in their careers. Childress focusses on the drama of relationships and family, not on the global implications of the buttons Ethan and Jessica pushed. As the world becomes more interconnected, and as finance and warfare become more impersonal, linking consequences to our actions and faces to our interactions becomes more tenuous. And West is West illustrates that reality well. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

By KathLDK Literogo Perhaps the defining characteristic of this millennium is our isolation from each other despite being more connected, through technology, than any previous generation. Ron Childress’ novel, And West is West, explores how two lives can be utterly destroyed and rebuilt through our connection to other people. The novel follows two protagonists. First, Jessica Aldridge, a drone pilot for the military, who is forced to fire on innocents. Upset by the situation, she mentions it in a letter to her incarcerated father. This breach of confidentiality, which could embarrass the military and the politicians who benefit from good PR, results in her losing her job and everything that defines her, and having to go on the run. Meanwhile, Ethan Winter, a quant on Wall Street whose code helps his employers benefit financially from the crises caused by terrorist actions, becomes a scapegoat for a massive error. What’s more, he’s been entrusted with a terrible secret.Initially I expected this to be a typical thriller, with car chases, evil corporate overlords, and some kind of vigilante heroism. On the contrary, this is a character-driven novel in which the personal development of Ethan and Jessica is more important than the plot. It falls more in the category of literary fiction than a thriller, although it could appeal to fans of either genre. A result of this, though, is that the pace is somewhat slower than it could have been, which made it a little tedious at times.I found it a little difficult to connect with Ethan and Jessica at first, as they made choices that didn’t make sense to me, or as I felt too distant from their narrative voice. In fact, I connected most with Don, Jessica’s father, whose story is told in his own voice, through his letters to his daughter. In fact, the distance I felt from the characters heightened the feeling of isolation that permeates the novel, and after thinking about the book for some time I wondered if that might be deliberate: this is a novel about how we isolate ourselves from each other, alienate each other, and crave some kind of genuine human connection. The main premise of the book is that of scapegoating. Jessica becomes a scapegoat for a failed military operation, and Ethan is the scapegoat of financial corruption. They are defined by their actions, but they find their identity ripped away as actions are attributed to them, beyond their control. It brings to mind the concept of Ubuntu, in which people are defined by their kindness, empathy and compassion towards other human beings. And it is only through acts of kindness, and empathy, that they are able to recover from the tragedy of losing themselves, and rebuild their lives and characters. Jessica struggles to reconnect with her alienated father; Ethan connects to his estranged girlfriend too late. Finally, through generosity and a sense of commonality with strangers, they redeem themselves. With elegant prose, and a consistent thread of sincerity, this novel has more to it than meets the eye; it is a multi-layered moral study of modern society, and how our identity is dependent on our relationships with others.Read more of my reviews on Literogo.com

“I was scared of a thing that might have happened. In daytime I’m sure it / never did. At night, I don’t trust daylit memories or instincts. In nightmares, like / filmstrips, the feared thing occurs.” In her second poetry collection, monsters—real and imagined—chase Houston Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Zepeda through late nights when she can’t sleep. Ghosts routinely visit in the early morning hours, but in spite of her fears, she dares to believe that she has escaped the devils that once followed her. This collection of 62 narrative poems contains witty observations about the rituals of contemporary life. In “Cocktail Hours,” she wonders, “What if all my nights were Christmas lights on patios with tinkling drinks /and fun conversations.” And in “Recipe for Fun,” Zepeda offers a ten-point guide to soothing away life’s frustrations, including a suggestion to get some peace by giving “everyone in your house pizza, cat food or video games.” Musings on family, remembrances of childhood games and encounters with strangers (and ants!) fill this clever, thought-provoking collection in which Zepeda dares to express her individuality. She knows that she is different, “Maybe I am a boy in drag. / Especially here, where I don’t feel like / everybody else.” She doesn’t follow others blindly or do what society expects of her. Readers will appreciate this second poetry collection, which is deeply personal yet universal in its hopes and fears.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Poetic Zombies By David Bowles Recent years have seen an explosion in the number of Texas Chicano poets publishing chapbooks and volumes of verse, adding their distinctive voices to the growing canon of Latino poetry. Aficionados and newbies alike can find much to enjoy among these new collections: Gwendolyn Zepeda, for example, is a very accessible poet whose work rewards with its emotional and thematic depth.“Monsters, Zombies & Addicts” is the latest from Zepeda, who was named the first Poet Laureate of the city of Houston. In 62 darkly humorous and bravely revealing pieces, Zepeda gives us a glimpse inside the hearts of women who bend briefly beneath the weight of society’s demands and oppression, gathering the rage and courage to push back and stand defiant.I enjoyed every one of her quirky narratives (prose poems and verse), but there were stand-outs. From the first section, Addicts and Obsessions, “Cocktail Hours” vividly explores the drawbacks of living for the weekend. Section two, Monsters and Warriors, gives us harrowing intimations of abuse like “When Hansel and Gretel Grew Up,” “Carnie” and “TV Bonding Time,” in which tense silence speaks louder than any words.“Drag” (from section four, Zombies and the Bitten) is a powerful affirmation of identity, and “Neigh” (from the final section, Animals and Nature) turns the table on men who would bridle and ride women who have the soul of a wild mustang. With a deft appropriation and exaptation of the tropes and language of the horror genre, Zepeda has crafted symbolic heroine’s journey, a passage through fear and into hope.

Houston's First Poet Laureate Pens Another Poetry Collection By Mona AlvaradoFrazier This poetry collection contains 62 poems on 84 pages divided into subject headings: Addicts and Obsessions, Monsters and Warriors, Zombies and the Bitten, and Animals and Nature. The section I enjoyed the most is Animals and Nature with several evocative poems. Themes are urban life, relationships, parenthood, culture and the self.Ms. Zepeda is Houston's first Poet Laureate. She is also a novelist and a children's book author. A child's point of view comes out in a few of the poems. Many of the poems are humorous observations about contemporary life: Cocktail Hours, Baby Wearing Skinny Jeans and my favorite, "Recipe for Fun," a 10-point guide for washing away the harshness of the outside world. This is the kind of poetry collection one could return to and reread a few times. My partiality is towards longer narrative poems and much of these are short. This poetry collection is accessible to teen readers. Arte Público Press sent me this copy for a review.Based on this collection, I'd read/purchase her other books of poetry and novels.

In 2013, singer and writer Cecelia Otto traveled the Lincoln Highway from one end of the country to the other, giving concerts of vaudeville-era music in every state she passed through. Her goal on this one-of-a-kind “singing travelogue”: to recreate the music that had once rang out in concert halls across America, reconnecting with the hopes and dreams of a simpler time. Along the way, she met new friends with a shared love of the history along America’s original coast-to-coast highway. She discovered how life has changed since the road was founded in 1913 — and also saw firsthand that Main Street, U.S.A. is alive and well in the 21st century. In An American Songline, Cece recounts her incredible adventure state by state. Follow her on a journey from Times Square in New York to Lincoln Park in San Francisco ... a journey in which history and music come together to document and preserve a cherished part of American life.

By Tim Sandefur After seeing Ms. Otto during one of her live performances, I was drawn to read her book regarding the journey she took along the Lincoln Highway. I dove into the book anxious to see how she developed the ideas, venues, songs, and performances. I traveled along with her to each state, meeting people, and seeing the remains of the once major highway that stretch across our great country. To me this book was similar to riding in a car along the Lincoln Highway and looking out of the window. You might have a book with you, or maybe your radio on, or a game you could play on your cell phone to keep you occupied. Yet you just stare out of the window at all the beauty, sites and people and before you know it the ride is over and you feel this calm happiness inside of you. You haven’t been busy, you’ve just been. That’s "An American Songline"... It won’t take you through all kinds of emotions, but it will take you along for the fun and joyous ride. And before you know it a couple of hours have passed and a smile is left on your face. Well done!
