This poetry collection describes the Battle of Athens, Tennessee, which unraveled between August 1st and 2nd, 1946. When three thousand World War II veterans came back to their homes in McMinn County, they discovered an incredibly corrupt and oppressive government that engaged in false arrests, bribery, extortion and a long list of other crimes. The ex-G.I.s put together an all-G.I. ticket in the town elections for Sheriff and other major town offices. Over the course of the day, Senator Cantrell and Sheriff Mansfield, the corrupted opposing party, engaged in election fraud that went so far as to shoot Tom, a black farmer, for voting against them. In response, the veterans acquired guns and mounted an offensive that led to a stand-off at the jail house. The veterans in Athens won their right to a fair election with the use of deadly force. This collection closely follows archival evidence, and includes several poems about related philosophical and political concerns. It is a fascinating read for students of American history, as well as those who enjoy political poetry.

Battle for Athens, by Anna Faktorovich

Review Midwest Book Review: Poetry Shelf: December 2012"What we left behind is not always what we return to. 'Battle for Athens' is a collection of poetry from Anna Faktorovich, who uses her poetry to tell the story of World War II veterans returning to Athens, Tennessee, to a city run by a corrupted government. Telling of the veterans rising up politically, then arming themselves violently, 'Battle for Athens' is a riveting twist of poetry with an enticing premise, much recommended..."Writer Advice: Aline Soules"In the long tradition of narrative poetry, this work will stand out as a worthy addition... Writing historical narrative poetry requires a challenging combination of dispassion in the story telling and passion in the stance that the story takes. Faktorovich achieves both. Each poem can be read as a unique element; together, they create the full story and indict the power that corrupts. Further, Faktorovich implies a strong analogy to the processes in which we engage today, questioning our country's motives and encouraging the reader to think."

The story is clear: In Athens, Tennessee, in 1946, having fought long and hard in World War II, American GIs found themselves once again in battle, this time at home, fighting against political corruption and election fraud. The triumphant part of this story is that in Athens, the veterans succeeded in establishing a fair election. In other cities across the nation, this was not the case.Writing historical narrative poetry requires a challenging combination of dispassion in the story telling and passion in the stance that the story takes. Faktorovich achieves both. Each poem can be read as a unique element; together, they create the full story and indict the power that corrupts. Further, Faktorovich implies a strong analogy to the processes in which we engage today, questioning our country's motives and encouraging the reader to think.Poetically, this work is dense, telling in carefully crafted and pithy sentences the story and its implications. Historical black and white photographs enhance the poetry with images of the time, but the most memorable are those with close-ups of people where the reader can see the intensity in their faces. The combination of poetry and image presents a stark and unvarnished view of this story and forces the reader to think long and hard about where we have been and where we are going.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Epic Narrative By Ralph Vaughan Not a collection of poems, but a long narrative poem composed of many elements, most of them used in very clever and unusual ways to advance the central story. I found "Battle for Athens" to be quite enjoyable, informative and perceptive though a bit heavy-handed in places, which is not entirely unexpected considering the nature of the event itself.

Other fabulous beasts are clearly inventions, existing only in a mythical landscape of our own collective creation. But the Unicorn strikes us as more than imaginary. It seems possible, even probable...a creature so likely that it ought to exist. --Nancy Hathaway -- (The Unicorn) I know that the unicorns lived on the earth once upon a time, DO YOU?

First settled along a tributary of the Raritan River in 1720, South River was known as Willettstown and later as Washington. Part of East Brunswick until 1898, it emerged as an independent borough in Middlesex County with the passage of the state law to incorporate it. Although comprising fewer than three square miles, South River once served as a shipping and transportation link between New York and Philadelphia and has been home to industry since the first brickyard was established in the mid-1800s. Sand and clay mining, brick and tile manufacturing, shipbuilding, and textile and clothing manufacture have played significant roles in the development of the borough, as have the numerous ethnic groups in the community. Spanning the years from 1891 to 1906, the images included in this book document a time when hotels, embroidery factories, brickyards, and small businesses flourished while the population doubled and a trolley line simplified connections with nearby communities.

The Opening Bell, by J. B. Garner

About the Author J. B. Garner was born in Baltimore, MD on December 1, 1976, the youngest of three children. While still young, the family moved to Peachtree City, GA. His parents always encouraged his creative side and J. B. began writing and drawing from an early age. Though considered talented by his teachers, he never fully applied himself and bounced through high school and into college at the Georgia Institute of Technology. During his freshman year, his father died suddenly. Grief and lack of purpose caused J. B. to drop out of school. If not for a few close friends, he might have dropped out of life as well. Taken in by his friends and given a second chance, J. B. matured, applied himself, and finally, after over a decade of hard work, is now back to doing what he loves the most: writing.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Garner has written a great wrestling story By Noire J.B. Garner has written a great wrestling story. The action was well paced, and gloriously detailed. The characters were engaging with well thought out motives. He clearly has a great amount of respect for professional wrestling and women's wrestling in particular. I liked how he allowed the "head office" politics play out effecting things in the ring as well as driving the overall plot. I would get this book if you like professional wrestling, action/adventure, or good-vs-evil story lines. In the end I'll just sum it up as I liked it so much I bought the hardcopy for my shelf.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Among the best of wrestling fiction By Kindle Customer RWM J.B. Garner has finally done what so many tried and either fell short or failed. He wrote, in my opinion one of the best in wrestling fiction. And better yet, a story involving pro women's wrestling. Characters you care about, well developed with an exciting story and seemingly half the book dedicated to describing graphic wrestling action. Two families hell bent on continuing a generational feud, Rookie Leilani Ito is the pawn in a power struggle between her family, the Ito' s and the power hungry Von Richters. Fighting her family's support and indifference to her pursuing this dangerous struggle is but one fight she faces. Jealous wrestlers, fellow rookies and seasoned pros see her as a threat determined to test her mettle. Friendship, rivalries and betrayal all test her resolve. But her biggest fight comes with the granddaughter of the rival family, the Von Richters who is willing to put her out of wrestling just like her father and grandfather even if it's a fight to the death. Very exciting we'll written action makes this a page turner with an obvious sequel. Which I can't wait for.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. who love her and don't want her to be hurt By Amazon Customer This book pulls no punches - pun intended. We are catapulted into the world of woman's wrestling. The lead character, Leilana, is from Hawaii, and her choice of profession comes with her family's involvement in the sport. But there is also a long standing feud with another formidable wrestling family, which has ended in tragedy and disability for both her father and grandfather, who love her and don't want her to be hurt. Therefore, Leilana has to go against their wishes to proceed with her career.Leilana's ancestry is Hawaiian and Japanese, and one of the most sensitive parts of the novel is the depiction of her personality. Since I lived in Hawaii I thought it was spot-on. Love of family. Respect of elders. A tradition of hard work.No punches pulled in the fight scenes. They are graphic and brutish. The Dirty One is a wonderful female character who basks in the glory of being booed by the crowds who come to see her fight. There is a nice ending to the novel and poetic justice for Leilana's family.

Earth and Below is an illustrated story based upon a history of copper mining, along with discursive riffs on the nature of the element. It is, in a sense, everything one ever wanted to know about copper. The subject matter is organized by Struggles, Theories, and Materials. Struggles most directly addresses the labor issues involved in the history of attempts to organize copper workers and their working conditions, but includes other themes of struggle as well. Theories contains work that explores how differing outlooks, most commonly class-based, but not exclusively so, impacted upon the lives of copper workers. Lastly, Materials looks at copper and copper mines as objects in a larger world.

It was the week that changed everything.

Annie Sutton’s life is unraveling when she accepts a week-long assignment as a costume seamstress at Rysdonne Priory, a magical country house in England’s wild and beautiful Devon. Although her parents have irreparable problems and the love of her life is on a different continent, Annie holds fast to her own dream of domestic bliss. But complication arises when Annie meets handsome Will St John, just as her long-awaited plans are falling into place. Against the backdrop of a theatrical production and a cast of characters that seem equally dramatic off-stage, Annie discovers that she’s been betrayed, and must escape the tangled dilemma she’s fashioned for herself. Heartwarming and richly textured, Summer Theatre takes readers on a personal journey of first love, lost love, and the love that will carry on through a lifetime. Readers of Marcia Willett and Rosamunde Pilcher’s shorter novels will enjoy Michele Deppe’s perceptive rendering of endearing characters, idyllic settings, and serene storytelling. This was an enjoyable book that I can recommend to others. My only critique is that it's a bit heavy on the use of commas. While I love commas, it was a bit distracting when the writing could have flowed a bit more. Otherwise, a very enjoyable book that I would read again.
