Way out in India: Travels in a Curious Land, by Meryl Urson About the Author Meryl Urson is a South African yoga teacher and a wife and mother of three grown children. In former years she survived a stint of English teaching in a boys' high school, learned to type fast as a medical secretary, honed her olfactory skills while practicing aromatherapy and rejoiced at being a published writer. Her writings were products of the 80s and 90s before parenting won out over the pen. They included a book of short stories called Loaded, an illustrated children's book called Vuyo's Whistle and a children's TV script called Nkathazo, which was translated into the Xhosa language and aired on South African TV. She also wrote several pieces of fiction and non-fiction for various South African magazines over many years. She has also travelled extensively, to many countries and most continents and has visited India six times, unable to resist the curries that call to her from across the Indian Ocean. She wrote the book to share the colour and chaos of the country with readers far and wide and to make them snort with laughter in airport lounges, at the hairdresser or in their beds. If she manages to transport the reader to India, actually or vicariously, her book will have done its job.

By Demetri Meryl Ursons book transports you into the world that is India. On her journey she manages to capture the sight sounds and smells of India. Her novel is an in depth discussion and description of her personal journey in this country. Her realistic depiction of India and her insights into the Iyenga institute and the teaching programme make for fascinating reading. Her conversational style of writing makes for easy reading with descriptions so vivid that I imagined myself walking with her. Her voice and humorous anecdotes resound through this fascinating adventure through India. The understanding that one is left with is that as people we are resilient , multifaceted and our faith, our practise and cultural diversity binds us spiritually. I would recommend this book. It will open up a whole new world for the reader.

For star struck yogis ready to roll up their mat and head for Pune there is an intensely personal cautionary tale of disillusion By Victor Southwell Way out in India has something for everyone. For the armchair traveller there are vivid descriptions that take you to places you probably won't visit other than through the author's eyes (Varanasi for example). For the serious traveller, contemplating their first trip to India there is helpful advice on places to stay, preferred modes of transport and sites to visit in places one might otherwise write off as 'tourist traps' (Goa comes to mind). For star struck yogis ready to roll up their mat and head for Pune there is an intensely personal cautionary tale of disillusionment and disappointment balanced by a delightful account of serendipitous meetings and the discovery of the beautiful and poignant India that lies just beyond the somewhat frayed edges of travel brochures and the rose tinted glasses of spiritual acolytes. All it takes is a sense of adventure and a willingness to step off the beaten track. And along the way Urson is there with a keen sense of observation and wicked sense of humour to guide you.But to call this first publication a well researched travel guide would do it a huge disfavour. Urson's writing is at its best when she is telling a story, whether an account of an unlikely Yom Kippur, an emergency dental appointment in a strange town or a 'romantic" sunrise over Kanchenjunga to name but a few. At such times Urson prose ebs and flows effortlessly, sweeping the reader blissfully along, wanting more. And more. I very much look forward to reading Ms. Urson's next effort. Perhaps a novel, if I may be so bold?
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Way In By Ingrid Hoffman I’ve never had a desire to travel to India. Reading Meryl’s evocative descriptions of this vast over-populated continent are probably the closest I will ever come to an “Indian experience” in this life time. Meryl’s easily accessible writing style and her deliciously irreverent humour flavour each sentence, making this book a sensual delight to read. I love her practical advice on where to stay and what to avoid (for me the entire continent) and throughout the book her voice comes through authentically. Her courageously frank account of her experiences in Pune at the famed and fabled Iyenger Institute is disturbing to read. Guruji had iconic stature and is still revered by thousands of devotees who seem to have a penchant for self-abasement and apparent blindness for mis-use of power in this so-called place of yoga. This book is more than a travelogue. It is a woman’s very brave and personal soul-journey and a remembrance of Who she truly is. I was intrigued by her references to Judaism and by her considerable depth of knowledge and research. A superbly written book and a tribute to one woman’s courage and resilience. A must-read if you are considering undertaking a trip to India – or not. For me, Way out in India is a Way In... and it just gets curiouser and curiouser! Brilliant!
