Number one best-selling author C. L. Swinney has been a cop for almost fourteen years, ranging in assignments from patrol to undercover narcotics. The things cops do and see are certainly not for the faint of heart. We develop a sick sense of humor, but only to rationalize the fact that we risk our lives for strangers (some who wish us dead), enforce the law, and pray we go home to our loved ones at the end of our shift. Some wearing a badge drink or use drugs to cope, even go as far as taking their own lives. Others are heavy-handed or get caught stealing. C.L. Swinney chooses to write to deal with the stress of the profession. The poetry found within this collection is rough, sometimes unstructured, and may not suit all readers. However, it soundly portrays what it means to wear a badge and to serve and protect. As with all of his other work, C. L. Swinney will donate the overwhelming majority of the proceeds from this collection to the families of fallen officers and military members.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Crushing Tin By Theresa Atashkar Another great book by Chris Swinney! You never really know what someone else's job or life is about until you have a chance to walk in their shoes. This book of poems and prose allows you to walk in the shoes of a police officer and it isn't pretty. There is so much in the news these days about bad cops, and as usual the stories about good cops are few and far between. If you take the time to read this you will see what goes on--on a daily basis on the police officers shift. It was heart wrenching thing for me, I can not imagine trying to save a child's life or pull a dead body out of the ocean.Thank you Chris for giving us the flipside of the story and thank you for the work you do to keep people safe from harm.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The dark thoughts By Ken Wow! I really don't know what to say. I guess I can start by saying that as with most Americans we seldom have a police or military person in our lives and as such don't really appreciate the dark thoughts they live with each and every day. C.L. Swinney brings those dark thoughts to life showing readers that cops ARE real people too. They get up have breakfast, kiss the wife and kids good-bye and go to work hoping each and everyday that this day will not be he last. In this day and age with everything going on around us being a cop can be the toughest job out there. There are predators out there just wanting to make a score. They know nothing will happen - not with the liberal media on their side. That thin blue still has to respond to the call, keeping their head on a swivel knowing full well every movement will be recorded and upload to the world to see after proper editing of course. In this book Chris - with his poems and prose - attempts to release some of that pressure the he and all police endure. I did chuckle at the gallows humor police use in the locker room. Well Chris, I have to tell you, when there is trouble outside my door I am calling a cop knowing things will get better. For the rest of you, if there is trouble call a gang member.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. quick, funny and thought provoking read By Outnumbered Some of the poems are funny, some heart breaking and others really give you a glimpse into the life of a police officer. Great quick read!

Set in the last years of the Revolutionary War with events leading up to the Battle of Cowpens in the forests of Carolina. Think Mel Gibson - the Patriot. Masterful writing in 18th century prose. Violates every rule of don't use sing-song phrases the same same way Shakespere did. Lyndes' standard boy meets girl 1st page - (surprise) girl last page plot, with much brutal action and historical character development in the intervening 500 pages. Keep Wikipedia and Kindle's New Oxford Dictionary handy. A page turner. Attention engineers - Note most of Lynde's many Kindle novels (23) deal with authentic railroad engineering excitement in the Rockies at the turn of the century. Also page turners. Start with The Taming of Red Butte.

William Blake was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. His prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". His visual artistry led one contemporary art critic to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced". While Blake had a significant role to play in the art and poetry of figures such as Rossetti, it was during the Modernist period that this work began to influence a wider set of writers and artists. William Butler Yeats, who edited an edition of Blake's collected works in 1893, drew on him for poetic and philosophical ideas, while British surrealist art in particular drew on Blake's conceptions of non-mimetic, visionary practice in the painting of artists such as Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland. His poetry came into use by a number of British classical composers such as Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams, who set his works. Blake's thoughts on human nature greatly anticipate and parallel the thinking of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung. In Jung's own words: "Blake a tantalizing study, since he compiled a lot of half or undigested knowledge in his fantasies. According to my ideas they are an artistic production rather than an authentic representation of unconscious processes." Similarly, although less popularly, Diana Hume George claimed that Blake can be seen as a precursor to the ideas of Sigmund Freud.

The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, by William Blake

Review “A leading American Blake scholar once described the prospect of editing The Marriage of Heaven and Hell as ‘a swamp filled with gators;’ Michael Phillips has navigated his way with great skill through the problems of chronology, textual unity, technique, contemporary context and significance of Blake's strikingly witty, sardonic, quirky, cryptic product of his unique combination of text and illustration in his illuminated books. As well as the facsimile of Copy B, one of the earliest of the nine known copies of the book, there are twenty-one valuable supplementary color plates of comparable pages from other copies, including a full run of Plate 14 as it occurs in the nine copies produced between 1793 to the year of his death, 1827. The detailed commentary discusses both text and illustrations, and in the case of the illustrations is most helpfully accompanied by appropriate details from Blake's designs.” — Martin Butlin, formerly Keeper of the British Collection, Tate Gallery, London, editor of the catalogue raisonne of the Complete Paintings and Drawings of William Blake (Martin Butlin)“This edition of one of Blake’s most potent and provocative books will give great pleasure both to Blake enthusiasts and to those new to his work.” (Tracy Chevalier)“This is an excellent scholarly edition of one of Blake’s most fascinating works, likely to become the defining text for generations to come. No one knows as much about Blake’s work in this period as Michael Phillips and he uses his knowledge of the text, its context, and Blake’s printing techniques to open up the question of what Blake thought he was doing with The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.” —John Mee (John Mee)

About the Author William Blake was an English poet, artist and illustrator. Born in London in 1757, Blake had a strongly religious upbringing and was encouraged to read and study the Bible by his devout Christian mother. In his youth, he earned an apprenticeship as an engraver, and he made a living throughout his life carving woodblock illustrations for the printing press. Blake published his first book of poetry, Poetical Sketches circa 1783, and soon fell in with some of the most famous artists and intellectuals of the time, including Joseph Priestly, Mary Wollstonecraft and Thomas Paine. Throughout his life, Blake wrote and illustrated many books of poetry, despite the fact that his works, often considered too radical or irreligious, went largely unrecognized during his lifetime. Now Blake s books of poetry and illustrations, including Songs of Innocence and Experience and Jerusalem, are considered some of the seminal texts of the Romantics movement. Blake died in 1827, and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Dissenter s graveyard in Bunhill Fields.

By James Rovira Please disregard some of the other reviews of this product as they have been transferred by Amazon.com to this product when they were written for another product -- no fault of the reviewers. Amazon.com does not currently recognize the need for different reviews of different editions of the same work. This review is of the edition of William Blake's Marriage of Heaven and Hell published by U Chicago Press (2011) for the Bodelian library and edited by Michael Phillips. Some of these other reviews really need to be deleted as they are completely irrelevant to this specific product. I will be writing here about the hardcover edition. I have not yet seen a copy of the paperback edition. This beautiful and professionally-bound U Chicago edition of MHH appears to be a cover to cover facsimile of the Bodelian's copy of Marriage of Heaven and Hell. I mean "cover to cover" quite literally: the image posted here as the cover is a full-color photographic reproduction of a nineteenth-century binding, wear marks and all. Upon opening the book you will find a full-color reproduction of the inside cover, handwriting, bookstamp, and all. The next page -- which is a blank page in the original -- is again reproduced exactly, water stains and all. What you will be purchasing with this edition, then, is an exact reproduction of Copy B of the Marriage of Heaven and Hell from cover to cover, with the addition of Phillips's extensive introduction, textual transcription, notes, commentary, a checklist of copies, and bibliography. There's simply nothing like it; not even the edition published by the William Blake Trust for the Illuminated Books series. Owning this book is as close to owning an original copy of the Marriage of Heaven and Hell as you can get.The William Blake Archive does have Copy B of the Marriage of Heaven and Hell online with a textual transcription, so you can preview the specific contents of the reproductions there. This edition, however -- being a full, cover to cover reproduction of the book owned by the Bodelian -- includes several additional plates that aren't part of the same sequence of images available on the Blake archive website (though probably available by selecting the individual plate and clicking "compare"). These additional images include several different copies of what is Plate 14 in the Bodelian copy with alternate copies of a few other plates from the MHH (such as A Song of Liberty and one of the Memorable Fancies), and a copy of "Our End is Come" preceding the text of MHH. You can read more details about Copy B of the MHH on the William Blake Archive website.Overall, well worth the price and a good purchase even if you already own the William Blake Trust's edition. I think this volume represents the future of Blake publishing: professional facsimile editions of each individual copy.

Get the copy editided by Michael Phillips By Ancient DIY'er Since this is a fairly serious work, the Amazon mandated choices regarding plot, mood, pace and characters really don't apply. Since Amazon groups together all reviews of books with the same title, the one to get is edited by Michael Phillips. Mr Phillips has spent almost a lifetime studying William Blake and carefully presents his insight as well as differences in various editions of the book.To appreciate this book, one has to take into account the political and religious turmoil when it was written. Mr Phillips gives a lot of background to help understand the era.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. NOTE: 3 pages! By Daniel J. Prince I do not understand why, but this is not the entire book. It is only three pages and only contains the Proverbs of Hell. I wish I noticed that before I bought it. The whole book is available online for free, so don't bother with this incomplete version.

I was in love as soon as I opened the book. Vickie
