PDF Ebook The Age of Recovery, by Elijah Noble El

The Age of Recovery is a poetry book that works on bringing forth both the light and the darkness that comes with being human. It's about moving on from your past, about not letting your pain define you. These poems recollect the moment your heart dies, and that moment it's reborn again. In essence the book is about the human condition, about storytelling, about immortalizing vignettes in life that mattered too much to let die.

Elijah Noble El writes about love, violence By Anonymous Elijah Noble El writes about love, violence, religion, and a multitude of other topics with the kind of grace and deftness that can take even seasoned poets years to master. We see in his poems that happy endings are not always possible, yet El's voice brings us healing by the end of the collection. In many of his pages, women are heroines, and through his works like “Ode to the Bloody Panties,” we see that El is a hero too for tackling controversial and painful subjects.Halfway through the collection, he writes, “We both know a soldier’s end.”And a soldier this author is, whose poetry will live on in my mind, and many others’, for years to come.

Much More Than Scenery By Robert Lange The Scenic Route is the blending of a love of nature and the natural order of things with the understanding of our human foibles and emotions into warm - and passionate - vignettes by a master story teller. Though the Articles span a specific chronology of years and are set on the author's home turf, they are timeless and without borders in their themes and messages. An excellent read!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An excellent read By Welsh Annie This was a book that constantly surprised me. At one point, I thought it was going to be a relatively straightforward tale about two damaged people finding love in the Yorkshire Dales. Jay is an itinerant storyteller with a complicated past, Marilyn emerging from a toxic relationship and living in an isolated cottage: she accepts his help in repairing her barn after a storm, and it turns into love. There's a lovely sequence near the start of the book where Jay weaves elements into his stories that attract customers to nearby stalls in the market - I think I was lulled into expecting something quite different from what the book became. The prologue should have been the clue really - a young boy witnessing an act of cruelty and violence during the Balkan conflict, coming face-to-face with an enemy soldier, being told to run. And then there’s Vinko - right there in the Dales square, stealing money from Marilyn's purse - and we’re into a different world of war and its consequences, illegal immigrants and the challenges they face. And then we find out that Jay is far more complex than he at first appears. The book turns into a thriller - in stark contrast with its homely Yorkshire setting - and in the last third moves at breakneck pace to a thrilling ending. And through it all, we have a slow reveal, told through flashbacks and dreams, of Jay's background story in war-torn former Yugoslavia, and the links between the love story and the thriller in the making become clear. This is a book that really shouldn't have worked - how on earth can anyone draw together so many diverse elements? And I haven't even mentioned the murder mystery - or the recurring appearance of a figure from the past. It's a tribute to Alison Layland's writing that it works really well - this is a first novel, but it really doesn't show. Far more than its parts, it exposes the waste and futility of fighting for a cause, the tragic effects of a civil war that can't be won. If I have any criticism, it’s a very small one - I did get a little lost in some of the wartime detail, especially when told by Jay in conversation with Marilyn. But this is an excellent read - a real page turner that confounds your initial expectations, and I really look forward to seeing what the author tries next.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I was nicely wrong-footed in at least one instance By Jean Darvill Who is the tall dark handsome stranger emerging from the remote Dales countryside after the storm? Does his offer of a 'helping hand' pose a threat to the vulnerable Marilyn or is he as 'innocent' as he appears? And what links him to the the ghost from the past and the brutal events recalled in the scenes from war-torn former Yugslavia? How is Jay connected to the unfortunate illegal immigrant Vinko? And in turn to the elderly couple living nearby? There's mystery a'plenty in this thriller debut by Alison Layland who deftly handles its many layers as the narrative switches between past and present, focusing in turns on the different characters, keeping the reader guessing until the end.The characters themslves are credible and engaging, especially the protagonists Jay and Maryilyn. Moreover, it's not entirely clear who are the the goodies and the baddies. I was nicely wrong-footed in at least one instance, as I was in the turn of events. Even the dialogue, so often a weakness in thriller writing, is well handled and, importantly, doesn't hold up the pace unnecessarily. Nor for that matter does the descriptionBut that's how it should be in good thrillers and this is just that.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Gripping and unusual By Suze Lavender Jay is leading a nomadic life. He owns a house, but he isn't staying there. He's trying to come to terms with his past, but it keeps haunting him. He's fought in Yugoslavia, for friends. Something traumatic happened and Jay has never been able to get over it. Jay has his flute and he tells stories to make money. When he meets Marilyn he offers to help her with her house after a terrible storm. Even though she doesn't need to she offers him the guest room and some food and clean clothes. A friendship between them instantly blossoms and also the feeling that they want more, but Marilyn has been badly hurt in her previous relationship and Jay isn't a very reliable person. Is this relationship doomed from the start?Jay's past becomes his present again. There's a boy he wants to help, Vinko. Vinko doesn't have an official identity and Jay wants to help him change it. He's had a tough life and Jay wants to make sure he's taken care of. Unfortunately there's someone who wants to use Vinko to get a large sum of money. The question is if Jay can really help him or not. And will helping Vinko mean that he has to betray Marilyn?Jay is traumatized because of something that has happened in the Yugoslavian war. War is terrible and there are always many victims. In this war friends and neighbors were suddenly fighting each other and that had a lot of dramatic consequences. Jay was there to help his friends, but the war made him lose so much, even his own identity. I felt really bad for him, because he's such a good guy.Things are threatening to escalate and as a reader you know something is going to happen. This constant tension combined with the unusual relationship between Marilyn and Jay make Someone Else's Conflict a gripping read. The story is unusual and really good and I liked it a lot. Money plays an important role in this book, I was curious to see where the chase would end and if Vinko and Jay were going to be all right.Jay has a lot of love and kindness to give and that is another important aspect of this book. Marilyn is just as kind. She and Jay are two broken people and they're good together, I loved their connection. There are several clear decision points in this novel which are making the story really strong. The war in the past, the consequences of what happened that are dominating the present and the hope for the future are intertwined in a fantastic way. I loved this book and am glad I had the chance to read it.

Smith PJ Adams does a marvelous job of presenting readers with the Provence and Languedoc regions of southern France. Her descriptions of the landmarks and other sights, history, art, people, culture, transportation, accommodations, and unique dining experiences are not to be missed, and her plentiful photos are beautiful, too!And what a talent Adams has for turning a phrase. You'll find yourself transported whenever you read passages such as this--"Provence is a land of changing geography where verdant valleys end in cliff-hanging villages. Where bulls run wild on marshy lands, and where the Luberon is ringed by ancient villages like Gordes and Ménerbes that end up on book covers and in movies. Yes, this is also a place where a river runs through it--but here it's the Rhône hailing from the Swiss Alps and flowing freely by flourishing vineyards, Pope's palaces, and finally out to the Mediterranean sea."--and this:"They create their own brand of cuisine for example--not quite French, not quite Spanish, but a unique blend of local ingredients that come together in dishes that don't just stick to your ribs--they stick to your soul."You can easily become immersed in this book. It provides an engaging perspective on each area, starting with the fascinating local history--with Roman, Spanish, and other influences--through the centuries that builds context for what visitors can see and experience today.Adams has seasoned this book with gently and affectionately told vignettes of her experiences and observations. She also speaks throughout of the high value placed on creativity--painting, cooking, writing, and even artistic expression in displaying one's wares in the marketplace."Intoxicating Southern France: Provence & Languedoc Spotlight" is both an invaluable guidebook for visitors and a priceless vicarious experience for armchair travelers. Highly recommended!

Lockard I am in Provence for 6 weeks and am loving "Intoxicating Southern France, Provence& Languedoc Spotlight."This is sort of a hybrid - not really a full-fledged guidebook, but more than a travel article. The books in this series go into details about what there is to see, do, taste, quaff, and experience in this most beautiful region of France. My recommendation is to read this book as you plan your trip, take some notes about what sounds great to you, and use a more conventional guide book to do the specifics. P.J. Adams gives a great feel for the regions she writes about and this book is no exception.Or, if you would love to travel to southern France but just can't right now, this book is a great substitute! You can visualize a future trip as you read about the wonders, joys, delicacies, and experiences that await you here.

By W and A If you're traveling to Europe, you *need* this book; the travel advice you find on the Internet is NOT a substitute. There, I said it. My wife and I were originally skeptical of buying a travel book because we felt we could find everything we needed online. We bought it anyway, and it was the best travel investment (certainly from an ROI perspective) we have ever made.Travel is expensive, and you want to make the most of it. This book makes that possible.Rick Steves helped us spend time and money wisely nearly everywhere we traveled in Europe. The book introduced us to so many places we would not have found and included some really cool tips that we've seen no where else (tough to find time-saving semi-secret door in the Vatican? Check!). The walking tours were especially outstanding and ensured we saw the best of the major cities in at most a day, allowing us to go off the beaten path or explore areas of interest in more detail on subsequent days. Some cities we visited were not in this book - take Prague, for example. In those cities, I felt much more lost, aimless, and unprepared as I cobbled together touring and sightseeing information online (in Prague, I finally decided to splurge for Rick Steves book on Prague). That's surely a testament to my belief that this is indeed REQUIRED reading for your European trip.Tip before you buy:Click into the Table of Contents on the Amazon "Look Inside!" feature. Make sure the regions and cities in this book match the regions and cities you're visiting. Or, better yet, use the locations in the book as an outline to decide where to travel!

Always have very pragmatic information and advice that saves time and euros. Only reservation to offer is that the guides are getting rather large in size and page number. Small price to pay for the great travel insights provided. Haven't moved to ebook versions yet but it's likely to be the solution. Good pricing with Amazon compared to R Steves' own site or off bookstore shelf. If you planning a trip abroad you should check out these guides.

We are 'seasoned travelers' and have an upcoming trip to Eastern Europe. I am the designated family travel guru but I never (at least to myself) claim to be a font of wisdom. It's books like this that help me keep up the façade. After I study this book, I can continue to carry on with my image as 'THE MAN'. But, enough about me, if you are planning to go to Eastern Europe, this book is essential. Following up on any one of the many tips and suggestions justifies the purchase.
