This book is an excellent resource to students, educators, and Chinese immigrant historical researchers and enthusiasts.Each chapter is filled with pictures and colorful quotes from the real chinese immigrant family of that era. These firsthand accounts provide deeper insight into their hard working life to get where they are today.The author supplies an in-depth personal aspects of how a chinese immigrant family life evolves from a small town of Bowmanville in Ontario of Canada. Some of the areas explored include the hardship encountered by early chinese immigrant trying to integrate into the mainstream canadian society while raising up their children with a small town chinese restaurant operating on marginal profit. As evidenced by the stories recounted throughout the volume, early chinese immigrant restaurant business were mostly family-based , part inventor, and part adventurer in order to survive.The book’s use of color and vivid stories helps to make the advancements come to life as something more than significant events on a timeline. Though I never met the late Johnny Seto, his journey through life made me feel like I’ve known him forever. Especially interesting was all of the comments from those in Bowmanville who saw him as family. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to being from or knowing an immigrant family that becomes part of the fabric of what Canadiana is all about. Read it!

Beautifully written stories with a fantastic mix of light and dark (often moving from one to the other in the space of just a page). Surprises abound and the characters have more depth than many found in full-length novels. There is something in here for everyone -- I would buy it again, pass it around and tell my friends. A worthy prize winner and a must-have for any fan of short stories or gorgeous prose.

Hamlin's exquisite use of language builds rich characters and suspenseful plot lines that left me intrigued and wanting more from this new author. We've enjoyed this for our family book club (ages ranging from 18 to 80!)

They've got a tonality, like an emotional "Twilight Zone" feel to them. They're certainly not "feel good" stories, but they most definitely are "feel" stories. The writing style flows (reads) very smoothly (always a good sign to me) without hesitations or potholes that interrupt the story.Highly recommended.
