"This book is like a plant growing from a stone wall, a poem growing from a story. A few months ago, I opened my laptop and resumed last night’s work on this new literary project, which had no working title — centered on a collection of my poems and their stories. Some of the poems here are written or suggested in my autobiography, ‘Koko Ken’. I am having a hard time writing this section because the stories and elucidations are written within this book. Being a Spina-Bifida baby boomer, I wasn’t to live past six weeks. I’m sixty-four – by the blessings of the Lord, the plant is alive from the stone wall. So, here we are, growing from the wall, the stories and me behind the poems."

I’ve read Koko Ken in paperback and his other two eBooks at least twice. Ken Martinez began as a poet. About ¼ of this eBook’s material is from his other eBooks but that’s fine with me. The title is true to its word, "and their story". He tells how or why he wrote the poems, in a very interesting, readable way. At times I was sad, I laughed and sometimes I became lonely. There is love and some satire in these pages.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good read By Carrie G. Brett Fraser has left his job after an art scandal and has decided to travel the Southwest to find himself again and renew his faith in God. When parked along the edge of a road one morning he sees Rafaela De Silva out jogging when she suddenly falls and injures her ankle. Brett offers to take her to the hospital and soon finds himself falling for her.Rafaela’s family finds themselves on hard times. Her art gallery has been failing, her sister has health issues and she seems to be having one accident after another in her life. Brett coming into her life and family brings a bit of happiness they haven’t had in a while but is there something a bit shadier going on to bring about these problems??Sante Fe Sunrise is a bit of a Christian romance mixed with a bit of a thriller/mystery. The writing was wonderful, as the Southwest scenery and Sophia’s artwork were being described it could just be pictured so well in the mind. The characters were also very lovely people that pulled at the heart strings as they dealt with things in their lives. I did however see where the mystery would be headed fairly early on in the story but it was still an intriguing read to see how it would all work out in the end and just how it would all be tied together.I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful imagery, unforgettable characters, and a riveting storyline! By DeelaDL Tanya Stowe always strikes me as a one-of-a-kind writer…but never so much as when she writes suspense. Her genuine love for the genre shines through in the extra ‘heaping heartful’ of edginess she doles out for her suspense readers. In SANTA FE SUNRISE, that little something extra adds up to pure magic.Rafaela De Silva’s got a lot on her lovely Native American plate—not the least of which is the steady financial decline of her family’s art gallery. Then there’s the delicate younger sister who lays claim to a severe eating disorder, a super-sized artistic talent and ever-increasing night terrors that could easily land her in a room with fancy bars on the windows. Add to that the fact that the handsome stranger in town thinks someone wants to harm Rafaela, and the woman’s got more than sufficient reason to be a little on edge.Brett is determined to find out who wants to hurt the woman who’s taken an unrelenting grip on his heart—even though that woman can’t decide whether to trust him or chase him out of town. While he quietly delves into why someone might want Rafaela out of the picture, Brett also sets out to bring a little joy back into the home she shares with her mother and sister. While he’s repairing a ramshackle villa, he’s also rebuilding his self-worth, mending his relationship with God…and making himself a bigger target for someone who will stop at nothing to get what the De Silva family don’t even know they have.Stowe knows suspense, and handles it with all the aplomb of the seasoned professional she is. She also knows romance, and doesn’t mind turning Brett and Rafaela upside down and inside out while exploring the whole boy-gets-girl scenario. Her recipe for romantic suspense results in an extra bit of pizzazz in both categories.A dash of ancient Indian legend. A generous helping of black market artifacts. A pinch of snark, a handful of hope—and chapter after chapter of top-notch writing. I can’t imagine any reader of romance and/or suspense not being utterly and completely captivated by Santa Fe Sunrise. Five GREAT BIG stars!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Santa Fe Sunrise By Kit-Kat75 Ms. Stowe has a very good descriptive voice, especially of the settings. I could vividly picture the scenes in my mind and loved the imagery. Rafaela has a heavy load on her shoulders. Running an art gallery, caring for her family, and trying to keep the bills paid isn't easy. Her younger sister has an eating disorder, which adds to the burden. An accident leads to a chance meeting with stranger, Brett--a man who has left his job in order to find himself again.Rafaela is a very responsible character, as is Brett, and their connection is fun, but at times a little stilted. Rafaela quickly develops strong feelings for Brett, but after only two weeks, is able to read him quite well, which felt unnatural. In fact, Brett has similar feelings, but they both come across to each other as being uncommitted. I wanted there to be more to the relationship and wanted to see it develop, rather than be told. Reactions were very impulsive and shallow, compared to the supposed depth of their feelings. The suspenseful angle is interesting. Someone is trying to ruin Rafaela and her business and I enjoyed seeing things play out, while trying to guess who and why. Another interesting twist was to see God and religion play such an important role in this romantic suspense, but for these characters and their situations, it worked.Content: moderate religious elements; mild violence/suspense; mild romance. Clean.*I was given a copy through Singing Librarian Book Tours in exchange for an honest review*

The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, Esq, by William Makepeace Thackeray

Review (in full The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, Esquire) Historical novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, first published in Fraser's Magazine in 1844 as The Luck of Barry Lyndon: A Romance of the Last Century. The book was published in two volumes in 1852-53, and it was revised ("with admissions") as The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, Esq. in 1856. The novel concerns the life and times of the title character and narrator, a roguish Irishman. The fast-flowing satirical narrative reveals a man dedicated to success and good fortune. Born Redmond Barry, he leaves his homeland after shooting a man in a duel. He becomes a soldier of fortune and later works as a professional gambler. Remade as a man of fashion, he courts a wealthy widow, marries her, and assumes her aristocratic name of Lyndon. He mistreats both her and her son and spends and gambles away her money, but eventually she extricates herself from the alliance. By the novel's end he is in jail, cared for by his mother. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

About the Author William Makepeace Thackeray was a nineteenth century English novelist who was most famous for his classic novel, Vanity Fair, a satirical portrait of English society. With an early career as a satirist and parodist, Thackeray shared a fondness for roguish characters that is evident in his early works such as Vanity Fair, The Luck of Barry Lyndon, and Catherine, and was ranked second only to Charles Dickens during the height of his career. In his later work, Thackeray transitioned from the satirical tone for which he was known to a more traditional Victorian narrative, the most notable of which is The History of Henry Esmond. Thackeray died in 1863.

By Charles Reilly Having seen the movie "Barry Lyndon" by Stanley Kubrick years ago, I was taken aback by this book which is so markedly different than the 1975 film. In the book, Lord Bullingdon is actually the hero, where Kubrick presented him merely as a cowardly cad. Redmond Barry (later as Barry Lyndon)deserves all the evils that befall him and his first person narrative is quite humorous especially when blaming everyone for his own shortcomings. Unfortunately, the ending leaves one a bit unsatisfied, quite like the dismal end of Mr. Lyndon himself. This novel is not on the level of Thackeray's "Vanity Fair", but fun to read nonetheless.

Modern critics lightly dismiss the book as a piece of journalistic hack work, but it is much more than that. Redmond Barry, later Barry Lyndon, chronicles in a fairly sophistocated and always lighthearted manner his rise from a poor Irish country boy to the astral heights of polite English society from 1750-1820. Mr. Barry is always Machievellian in his way, and is quick and efficient with his sword. He is Odysseus, Holden Caulfield, Don Juan, and Nabokov's Humbert Humbert merged. In a word, he is very, very entertaining and very, very good. The book's only glaring flaw is it's belabored and uninspired ending. But it is much worth reading to watch Redmond Barry when young

A poetry workshop to celebrate Black History Month at Kingston University led to the formation of Kindred Spirits, a poetry group comprised of students from multiple faculties, all with one thing in common: the need to express themselves through the written word. Streams of Consciousness is the first anthology published by this talented group.

While each author writes about subjects that fire their personal passions, universal themes run through their work; loneliness, love, joy, and the importance of family shine through each page, providing common ground despite the authors’ diverse backgrounds. Some choose to tackle larger social issues, while others explore the complexities of familial relationships and the expectations of parents. All are powerful works. All are sincere.

Edgy and innovative, Streams of Consciousness refuses to mince words, with each author believing authenticity is key to true expression. Several of the poems found within are collaborations with award-winning poet Deanna Rodgers (UK Poetry Slam Champion). The moving force behind the poems, however, is the students themselves, whose voices do what poetry does best—mirror back life in all its inspiring, messy, contradictory glory.

By College Stealth I know, I know, the image of the book does not necessarily appeal to some people; it didn’t to me, and it took me a while to finally click on the book and start reading it. When I did, I found that I couldn’t stop. It’s a really powerful collection of poetry and prose. The book describes itself as having an “authentic voice,” and it’s true, the authenticity of each author really shines through, usually that type of adjective is general and hard to find in a written pieces, but no, really, it is present in this writing. What is nice is that it is a collection, if you are not in love with one writer’s style, there is another one that can come along and certainly re-spark your interest. I did find a lot of echoes to Langston Hughes, especially as some of the authors describe their experiences with what is perceived as race. I’m a teacher, and I teach high school students, there are a few poems I will probably pull to help my students get a perspective of lenses, as the language is clear and the emotion is very powerful in how it is communicated. If you’re on the fence with this book, give it a chance, I found it a VERY pleasant surprise.

Though it is hardly fair to select one poem to share, this on by Rui Daniel Jaime is special:PIECES OF PAPERRectangular shapes, sharp around the edges –You’re soft but not too soft. You have a bit of an “ugrh” taste,And you’re flat.Looking at a piece of paper, I candraw parallels with people in society. We all started as robust trees, mysteries to ourselves withunique qualities. The brown on our leavesrepresents the inner and outer conflicts,The green, our warm side. The yellow can show up; itdepends sometimes on where weare. But life can wear us down, anddue to fear, we chooseconformity.Sexism, racism, and all otherpoisonous teachings for me are a disgrace.Let’s look at stereotypes.I heard some say,“Girls are just a bunch of bimbos walkingaround,Who only dictate their actionswith what’s between their thighsand noteyes”—Ignoring the fact that women arebeautiful, kind, and unique,Worthy of love and affection,Never too much but alwaysenough. You’re worth more than numberson scalesOr the shoes you wear. It’s not about the number of girlswho wish they were youOr the number of guys who wishthey had you.People tell me, “Daniel, you don’t act black.”To this day, I don’t know what it means.Am I supposed to only get drunkand smoke weed,Come to university and only aimfor the Ds and Cs?I can’t sing; therefore, I’ll neverwin The X Factor. This doesn’t imply that I can’tbecome a factor.Too short to ball; Therefore, forget basketball.Do not behave like an automaton,Someone who doesn’t know orunderstand himself. The only person he knows is whohe’s supposed to be,Replacing communicative speechwith mindlesschatterThe book is rich, from the heart and the mind and it is impossible not to be moved by these meaningful poets. You can see the dedication and time that went into making this book possible, the poetry inside speaks right to the heart and calms the soul. Beautiful words are like medicine for a soul and this book is a prescription I would recommend. One of my favorite pieces is "Mother" I think because I am currently pregnant this poem REALLY spoke to me, but this entire book is well worth the read and share it with someone you love.*Disclaimer: I received this product at no cost to me in order to facilitate this honest review.*

What the stars see is Holly Christiana's first poetry collection. Full of poems that show the connections between all of us, the book moves both the romantic and the cynic. With language that is plainspoken yet ardent, the poems tell stories of mothering and daughtering, friending and loving. This book appeals to those who love poetry, and even those who are quite sure they don't. Whether funny or poignant, the poems are sure to pull you in and show you things about yourself you might never have considered.

Poems that take you to the stars By Mathew Paust Holly's unique voice reaches me as a magical cocktail of 3/4 girlish heart and 1/4 hearty broad with a dash of bold and a sprig of sly. The combination tastes heavenly and can knock you on your can when you least expect it. She's a dreamer, a lover and a loving schemer. She's a regular reader of these poems at an open mic in her neighborhood. I'll bet it's a hopping place.[Reviewed from a gifted copy of What the Stars See]
