Few other Upstate counties can boast as much history as South Carolinas Union County. It is known as the birthplace of the Confederacy, with Revolutionary War battles fought at Blackstocks, Musgrove Mill, and Fish Dam. It is home to the writing desk upon which the Article of Secession was drafted, and Confederate Pres. Jefferson Davis spent two days in Union during his flight after the War between the States. Early 20th-century Union offered the worlds largest cotton mill and multiple mill village communities, with Main Street serving as a cultural center bustling with large early hotels, opera houses, and numerous fine examples of antebellum architecture.

A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words, But Captions Are Just as Important By Photo Genie Photo lovers always enjoy "Images of America" volumes from Arcadia Publishing, a company producing excellent pictorial histories for many years. It's a pity that this particular one cannot be called excellent.Roughly 75% of the 190 photos in this book have not been previously published, whether in books, newspapers or on the Internet. This is the big plus of Triggiani's work. However, the selection of some images has left me scratching my head. For example, 23 images are devoted to trains/railroads while the total number of portraits of Union's outstanding individuals is greatly disappointing. There are several images from places outside the county's bounds, and it's regrettable that this space could not have been used for other rare Union County scenes, which are part of the Union County Historical Society's collection. (One wonders why there were no photos of Pinckneyville, for example. And why was the oldest church building in the city of Union omitted? Of course, I refer to the Episcopal Church of the Nativity. Instead the book has two almost identical views of First Presbyterian Church, one on page 62 and the other on page 72.) Twenty photos show Union's textile industry at its great height, and this chapter is the most pleasing because of the fresh images of almost all of the mills in the county. Other chapters (like the curiously titled "Wars, Local Patriots, and Personalities" & "Music, Fire, Law, and Education") seem like nothing more than a jumbled conglomeration. There are some photos with scant accompanying text, and in fact, the exact locations of several pictures are not provided, leaving the reader to wonder which school, which part of the county, etc. This work would have benefited from both a careful editor and someone experienced with layout design. There are misspellings, grammar/capitalization mistakes, and awkward sentences here and there. It could have been better organized, in regards to the groupings of photographs.Sadly, there are factual errors as well. There are some misidentifications of people and places, the most glaring being a photo (page 125) of the first Union High School with a caption labeling it as the Central Grammar School. Both buildings are extant; a quick drive-by would have helped distinguish the two. On page 45, according to the author, Ernie Godshall died in 1918---an easy check of either death certificates or newspapers would show that it was the much older Eugene R. Godshall who died in that year.Just to set the record straight on a few other details:1. According to the Union Times newspaper edition of 17 August 1921, the Wallace Thomson Hospital opened its doors on 1 August 1921, not in 1911 as is stated on page 9 of this book.2. According to the Union Times newspaper edition of 23 February 1917, the Fairforest chapter of the DAR held its Washington's Birthday tea on 20 February 1917, not 22 December 1917 as is stated on page 11 of this book.3. The steam engine seen on page 31 is operating a saw mill, not replacing a mule or horse plow.4. On page 80, the author asserts that the only remains of the B.U.C. locomotives are "their circular number plates, two of which are in the Union County Museum's collection." If the author had looked a little more closely in that same museum, he would have also seen the big brass bell from one of the locomotives.5. The mill company store seen on page 113 is Monarch Mills Company Store.6. The correct spelling of the mill on page 109 is Ottaray.7. And on page 18, the identification should read "Oogie" instead of "Oggie."If only the author had reached out to other knowledgeable persons to avoid some of these disappointments.Despite its shortcomings, this book boasts some great images, many of which you can see in the Union County Museum, which is a far better museum than either the much larger and wealthier nearby counties (Spartanburg or Greenville) can claim.

Emmalyn Ross never thought a person could feel this alone. Sustaining a marriage with a man who's not by her side is no easy task, especially since her husband currently resides behind impenetrable prison walls. His actions stole her heart's desire and gave their relationship a court-mandated five-year time-out. What didn't fall apart that night fell apart in the intervening years. Now, on a self-imposed exile to Madeline Island--one of the Apostle Islands of Lake Superior--Emmalyn starts rehabbing an old hunting cottage they'd purchased when life made sense. Restoring it may put a roof over her head, but a home needs more than a roof and walls, just as a marriage needs more than vows and a license. With only a handful of months before her husband is released, Emmalyn must figure out if and how they can ever be a couple again. And his silence isn't helping.

By Reasonable Reviewer This is a heart warming story of true love, acceptance, and forgiveness.Emmalyn finds herself in the northern reaches of Minnesota and Wisconsin far away from the man she loves, because he committed a crime and is doing the time. This is a wonderful, wonderful story told with skill and will a lot of heart.** Spoilers Follow **The story takes place in the last two years of Greg's sentence. While Emmalyn makes the best of things, she has some adventures with local characters that both challenge and expand her compassion. When the book begins, the reader is most uncertain about the future of Emmalyn's and Greg's marriage, but by the time we reach Chapter 30, we both know, accept, and are gladdened by the fact that they do get together.Thomas Aquinas said that someone who has never doubted the existence of God doesn't believe in God. If Emmalyn had never questioned her marriage to Greg while he was in prison then I'm not sure the reader could have accepted that their love was real.Ms. Ruchti, the author, did a skillful job of weaving the realities of northern Wisconsin and Minnesota into the book. She used local flavor with foods, sayings, and insightful descriptions of the countryside to make you feel as though you were there. While she not pummel anyone with it, it is clear that Ms. Ruchti comes from a religious background in a very positive way. That positive aspect shines through as a ray of hope and love in the book. All in all, a great read, and a very uplifting story.

Another winner from Abingdon Press By Trudie Barreras Cynthia Ruchti is another author whose work I consider myself blessed to have encountered via the “Vine for All” category of “Christian Books”. Her deeply insightful and beautifully written novel “As Waters Gone By”, published by Abingdon Press, is another winner from that amazing publishing house. Although it is my policy NOT to check on reviews by others before writing my own, I will not be surprised to discover that this one has received so many accolades mine will be merely icing on the cake.Of the numerous things that made this an extremely meaningful read for me, perhaps the most significant is the description of the conflict resulting from Max’s incarceration and Emmalyn’s ambivalent response to it. As it happens, over the past 30 years or so, my husband Ray has had a ministry of ongoing correspondence with a large number of inmates. He has visited several of them during their time of imprisonment; had telephone communication with some of them; and in several circumstances maintained contact after their release to various parole or probation situations. Therefore I am absolutely able to verify the authenticity of Ruchti’s description of the difficulty in communicating under those conditions, which forms such an important plot element in this novel.Although this book is deeply imbued with a genuine spirit of love, faith and hope, it is at no point saccharine or cliché. All of the characters are vibrant and realistic, in a decisively off-beat sort of way. The discussion of Emmalyn’s own resentment of her mother's and sisters’ attitudes as they impact her own feelings and actions offers a powerful counterbalance and additional infusion of realism. In all, I’m very glad that the paucity of meaningful offerings on my Vine Queue led me to seek out this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. AN AMAZING ENDING! By Kym McNabney When I was given the chance to read, AS WATERS GONE BY by CYNTHIA RUCHTI, I accepted with enthusiasm. I am very involved in the prison and jail ministry through my church, so the plot had me eager to read it. I have to admit the title seemed a bit of a tongue twister and baffling. But I will get back to that, later. With money running out and no other options, Emmalyn Ross moves to Madeline Island. There she meets others that welcome her into their world with open arms. A group of individuals with character, kindness, and passion. As Emmalyn begins to renovate the small cottage, God begins to do His own work within her. There are stories that are fast paced, and stories that have peaks and valleys. Then there are stories that glide along smooth and tranquil, like waters on a night with no breeze or current. AS WATERS GONE BY is the latter. As a writer, I can be critical when it comes to books. I no longer read with an untrained eye. What I have come to learn is there are several key elements to storytelling. Having all of them, and done well, is what makes a great story. If just one of those elements is not present and or not done properly, it can be the downfall of a potentially great story. The typical style story I read is ones with peaks and valleys. AS WATERS GONE BY did not provide that element…for much of the story. Other books I may have stopped reading sixty or so pages into it. What kept me going in MS RUCHI’S story is that she did an amazing job with the other elements needed for a great read. Knowing the story had to do with someone in prison, was another key to continuing. I have to admit, I hoped it would be worth it in the end.Like a light being turned on in a very dark room, the shift happened. Everything started to click and move along in a way that had me wanting more. In many books, you sense where things are leading, yet I was unsure where MS RUCHTI was going with AS WATERS GONE BY. What I didn’t expect was to read the last pages with a fuzzy warm feeling, AND tear filled eyes. The characters are unique, three dimensional, and endearing. The content realistic. The choice of words and lines, remarkable. Often a title doesn’t mean much. Doesn’t stand out or have importance to it. In AS WATERS GONE BY, that was not the case. As perplexed as I was about the title, in the end it all came together in a profound way. A way that made me say, awe. So that’s why. Yet it’s so much more than that…MS RUCHTI is an amazing writer. There have not been many stories I’ve read that I enjoyed reading at a slow pace, soaking in each word. I am at awe of her choice of words, having dog-eared pages, and highlighted a few lines. Something I rarely do in fiction. I am blown away how a book can turn from a “I’m not so sure about this” to a “an amazing story that will remain with me for a very long time.” One that not only tugged at my heart, but showed me how to string words together and weave a story that will resonate in reader’s hearts.*Please see my profile for more information on this review.

Any woman who feels alone in the aging process should read this book and feel like they have a friend on their journey in Joan. The illustrations are hilarious and entertaining.

"The Real Adventure" is good enough to have been referred to as "Second Hand Life" by HKW while he was writing it. The main character is a young woman who is intelligent, marries a good man whom she loves but is unhappy when he does not include her in his intellectual life. The plot is the story of how she strikes out on her own, makes something of herself and returns to her husband as an equal. The quality of the writing is wonderful. HKW is triumphant in showing why she is unsatisfied as an accessory to her husband and how she works hard to become more. There are glorious passages describing her working alone. HKW is no Ayn Rand but she named another of his novels, "Calumet K" as one of her favorites and very likely she would have enjoyed this one too.

It is as if Webster gave himself an assignment to write a novel from the point of view of a female protagonist and did an excellent job. I grew to admire his leading character as she herself grew to meet every challenge. Many of the twists and turns took me completely by surprise and that hasn't happened in a while. A really great read, after a slow start. In that period, a story didn't have to charge out of the gate and this one builds easily, slowly, until the pieces are all on the board. But it rewards your patience. Highly recommended

It's written by a first wave feminist. When I read it the first time it was before Betty Friendan's "The Feminine Mystique" had been published and I didn't know how to describe his book to people. "The Feminine Mystique" is a second wave feminist book, the first to be noticed by a large public. This novel is about a young woman working out how she wants to live her life...her choices about her career, her marriage, having and raising children. It covers most issues that have been written about and discussed since "The Feminine Mystique" was published. It is also a good story on its own.

By Riech Sebastian A months ago,I'm planned to travel around Madrid and I purchased this book to know what have Madrid have to be most colorful and cosmopolitan city in Europe. I'm lucky because I brought it and bring along with me when I went there. When I got there, this book serves as my guide book. This is very helpful in my travel when I was on Madrid. The scenery from this book is just like in person when I'm there. Using this book, I learned how to get to the most wonderful scenery on Madrid. Attractive locations in Madrid By Ralph Walter Flamenco can be watched and heard at many places in Madrid, but your best bet is to watch it performed at a tablao. A tablao is a dedicated flamenco restaurant that holds shows on a daily basis or on most days, as opposed to the bars and restaurants with a flamenco ambience that offer the occasional show. Simply go for an evening meal at one of these spots and listen to the music thereafter.

This short book is just what we needed. It talks about the most famous places to visit in Madrid and gives a background about each place. I just wish it had few pictures.
