Hugo Wilcken's first novel, The Execution—a taut, psychological mystery about an average person who commits an accidental murder—got the kind of rave reviews authors dream of: He was compared to Camus and Hitchcock. Now, in his second novel, The Reflection, the comparisons seem even more appropriate: It's a smart, creepy, steadily absorbing mystery about an average law-abiding citizen who finds himself inexplicably caught up in a case of mistaken identities—with one of his own patients. When psychiatrist David Manne is asked by a friend who's a New York City Police detective to consult on an unusual case, he finds himself being asked to evaluate a criminal who's the exact opposite of himself—an uneducated laborer from the Midwest who seems overwhelmed by modern day Manhattan circa 1948. But when that laborer tells David that he's not who the police say he is, David slowly begins to believe it may be trueUnable to stop himself, David begins to look into how the police handle the man, and the hospital they take him to . . . and begins to suspect that the man is caught up in some kind of secret governmental medical testing. Realizing he's got to rescue his patient, David quickly finds himself battling forces that seem to be even bigger than he suspected, and that now have him in their sights. When he suddenly finds himself caught with a patient's i.d. papers on him, he decides on a risky course that seems his only way out: To change his identity, and enter even deeper into the conspiracy, if he's to find out how to escape it.Written in relentlessly probing prose with a delicious plot complication seemingly on every page, this is one of the most thought-provoking, chilling, and suspenseful novels you'll ever read.

The Reflection, by Hugo Wilcken

Review “Hitchcock meets Dostoevsky . . . The Talented Mr Ripley with psychiatrists . . . A strange and clever book. It will leave you looking over your shoulder long after you've put it down.” —The Times“An experimental novel disguised as a thriller . . . It is a roller coaster, a helter skelter, a whole literary fairground . . . F Scott Fitzgerald said that the test of a first-rate intelligence was the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind and still be able to function. We might say the same for first-rate novels.” —John Self, The Guardian“'Hitchcock meets Camus'' is the unusually apt shoutline for this atmospheric exercise in retro literary noir, and Patricia Highsmith, Vladimir Nabokov, Miles Davis's cool jazz and Mad Men's Don Draper could be added to the list of influences or echoes . . . seductively ambiguous.” —The Sunday Times“[A] twisted and cerebral tale of fluid identity and government conspiracy. It is without a doubt one of the most clever, perplexing and challenging books I’ve encountered this year . . . The backdrop of 50’s New York is perfectly realised throughout, and it’s a cracking slice of hardboiled noir to boot.”—Raven Crime Reads“The Reflection has all the hallmarks of a classic noir novel: a narrator in crisis, a psychological drama, a femme fatale (or two) . . . cleverly done with some panache.” —Shiny New Books“The Reflection is a remarkable novel that blends elements of Alfred Hitchcock's paranoiac identity crises with David Lynch's oblique gaze. Unsettlingly powerful and beautifully written, this book will echo within you long after you finish reading it.” —James Smythe, author of The Explorer“This exceptional psychological thriller will remind readers of the works of Patricia Highsmith and Ruth Rendell at their creepiest... For discerning suspense lovers.”—Library Journal“A fine stylist, Wilcken captures a noirish, postwar New York.”—Publishers WeeklyPraise for The Execution “An exciting, nervy thriller that fulfills the demands of the genre while resonating on deeper frequencies.”—The New York Times Book Review “While Camus’s specter looms large throughout The Execution, Wilcken ultimately pulls it off on his own with an engrossing, twisting narrative. His is an important new voice in philosophy wrapped up in literate storytelling.”—The Boston Globe “A diabolical thriller that echoes the best suspense of Patricia Highsmith with a cheeky nod to Dostoyevski . . . This is a remarkably accomplished debut heralding the arrival of a noteworthy talent. Wilcken’s literary career may take as many fascinating twists as this brilliant book.”—Publishers Weekly “In this stunning debut, Wilcken creates a beautifully written, intricately crafted, multilayered story that can be read as a psychological thriller, a commentary on the superficiality of modern life, an Everyman story, or a modern morality tale. On whatever level, the book is both moving and mesmerizing.”—Booklist (starred review) “Nuanced, compelling, and fresh . . . an exceptionally well-done debut.”—Kirkus Reviews “Unnervingly cool prose . . . an entertainingly urbane thriller [whose] suspense lies not in the whodunit, but in watching a perfect life unravel.”—The Daily Telegraph

About the Author HUGO WILCKEN is the author of the novel The Execution, and the nonfiction book David Bowie's Low, part of the 33 1/3 series. Both books were critically acclaimed in both the US and the UK. After residing for many years in Paris, he now divides his time between London and Sydney.

Identities shift. Streetscapes are brilliantly evoked, buildings are ambiguous. An elusive quality - reflective, deflective - hovers and disconcerts. Questions tumble over each other. This deeply unnerving psychological chiller will grip you by the throat from word one. Just make sure you've cancelled your arrangements and the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign is hanging on your door.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Sesneless, inane and totally illogical By G. L. Tanty I'll be a contrarian on this one. This book made not one bit of sense from about page 10 on. Hard to review without giving away too much. But for a person obviously intelligent enough to make a living being a psychologist (or psychiatrist, never sure what the difference is) he makes some fundamental errors of judgement. When questions arise as to his real identity, there are some very easy logical things he could have done to establish the truth. While the descriptions of his environment were good, it was not enough to overcome the total illogical circumstances he is put into. The only way for him to start doubting who he is would be for him to abandon everything he knows about logic, the mind and the law. An important character present at the beginning of the book simply disappears until a passing reference near the end. His cop friend could have solved this whole problem for him in under an hour.I kept wanting to like the book, but was really glad when I finished.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant By Amazon Customer Sustained atmosphere of mystery and doubt, propelled by beautifully crisp writing. Think Camus, Auster, Hitchock & Christopher Nolan. Highly recommended. I've only read Wilcken's 33 1/3 essay on David Bowie's "Low" which is one of my favourite pieces of music writing. I'm now looking up his previous fiction works "The Execution" and "Colony".

The beautiful book " THE DECADENT LIE" speaks of delicate moments, it speaks of exhilirating passion, it speaks of life, allow it to speak to you ... follow the primrose path into cognitive bliss. Art in itself is a living, breathing entity, the embodiment of an unseen dream, spoken from the indomitable soul of man. The heart of the dreamer, it is that life laid plainly and openly before you, the reader. It is moral/ immoral, it is freedom written onto the page. The poetry within are reflections on life moments and fascinations. Each line is set to its own musical composition, each piece its own reflecting pool unto the world. Allow each line, each verse to break away the idle continuation of time. Surrender yourself to the rhythmic strumming as each string is set upon with bow and hammer, producing a proclivity of musical madness. Allow it to sink deep within every pore. Allow yourself to be taken on a journey of imagination, to be lost in the fervent dreams of a wayward mind. Give yourself permission to freely indulge upon the licentious fruit of the decadent. Each written piece draws forth is its own imagery, its own understanding for its created life. Allow yourself to be guided into fantasy and broken reality.

The Decadent Lie, by Gerald Mills

About the Author Gerald Mills is the father of two wonderfully dramatic children. Born in St.Catherine, Jamaica, he arrived in the U.S. at the age of six. He has a passion for photography, and the written word. "I find myself searching out the abstract; the intangible beauty found in everyday existence, hoping to grasp hold of it as though it were its own possible possibility, giving it life amidst pen and parchment". "There is nothing quite so beautiful as the written word worn as a jewel, adorning the segmented lines of papyrus". -Gerald Mills

It was recommended that I read this book and after reading just the first chapter I bought my own. I really don't like poetry but this is not just any old poetry book. It's like a velvety dream, a visual intellectual orgasm with words. Feeling out of touch with my life I decided to have a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon and read The Decadent Lie and it was like reminiscing with an old flame, falling in love only to be destroyed again and then brought back to life. Dramatic I know or maybe it was the wine. Anyway, this is a must have and a must read. You won't be disappointed, I'm not.Thank you Gerald Mills and I can't wait for part 2 and 3!!!

Gerald Mills' book "The Decadent Lie" explores and illustrates love through its many dimensions By Patricia Terstenyak Gerald Mills' book "The Decadent Lie" explores and illustrates love through its many dimensions. He has fun with the language, pacing, rhythms and tone. While some poems are light and easy to read, others made me pause and reflect on life's universal teachings. Like many other books of poetry, it is one to keep handy to remind us how beautiful life can be.I hope Gerald keeps writing and continues to share his talent with us.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A work of art By Eileen Mills The author so eloquently takes you on a journey of thoughtful introspection and romance using imagery that awakens the mind to new perspectives. You sense his heart with each entry and want to read the entire work at once, while re-reading for deeper understanding. His unabridged vantage point on life is beautifully communicated in such a way that causes the reader to reflect on the frailty of the human state. A well written work of art.

The definitive travel guides that make you feel like a local wherever you go. Monoclemagazine covers the world with its network of bureaus (New York, Toronto, Zurich, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Tokyo, Singapore), its more than 30 dedicated correspondents based from Beirut to Bogota, Sao Paulo to Stolkholm, and its team of on-the-road reporters based out of its headquarters in London. Monocle-the magazine that covers urbanism and the city design like no other-knows about the hidden gems in all the great cities. It also knows where to take an ambassador for breakfast, an on-the-go businessman for a late night cocktail, or where to get an astute concierge at ungodly hours. Its deep understanding of cities and all they have to offer has been compiled in the new Monocle Travel Guides. Launching this spring with editions for London and Tokyo, followed by New York and Hong Kong, these beautiful books reveal the Monocle team's favorite places, from the ideal route for an early morning run to the best spots for independent retail. Aimed at people who do not want to be tourists but rather feel like locals when they travel, these are books for those who want to mix the classic with the contemporary, want to get beyond the cliches, and know they can get a feel for a city even if they only have a few days. And they are full of surprises and quirks: the books will guide you to a grand hotel but also to a cozy two-star, and will leave you drinking in a local corner bar or being served by a great waiter who knows his craft-while being wary of pushing you into the newest, hippest, soulless bar. Created by the Monocle design team, these authoritative guides will be trim enough to drop into your pocket and wise enough to stay by your side throughout your travels.

England for the Christmas Holiday and loved all of the suggestions found in the book By Persianemu Just came back from London, England for the Christmas Holiday and loved all of the suggestions found in the book! I'm a regular Monocole Magazine reader and looked forward to seeing their editorial team's recommendations in person. We stayed at a hotel, Ace, recommended by the book, and it was just as described. The restaurants and other attractions that they recommend aren't necessarily the biggest names on the scene, but more the kinds of quality places a local would want to frequent. I was really pleased that the book covers a vast number of neighborhoods and activities and really gives you a wholistic perspective of the city, and leaves it to the reader to pick and choose based on their lifestyle or interests. When I go on vacation, I typically go on shorter trips and so my time is really valuable. Getting great recommendations is really invaluable. In all, I was very happy with how the book was laid out. The organization of the sections themselves and the specific areas and categories they focused on. Also, its pocketable format (in a jacket or coat) made it really easy to take around town without sticking out as a tourist. A must have for Monocle-enthusiasts and a strong recommend for London visitors wanting make the best use of their time and experience some of the best London has to offer!

Feelings, by Garfield Whyte

About the Author Garfield Whyte has always had a love for poetry and the environment. In his book, Feelings, he creates a perfect blend of this dichotomy as he thinks there is congruence with the environment and poetry. Some of these poems have been written as far back as the 1980s, and he has finally found the motivation and the time to make this book a reality. After graduating from Munro College in Jamaica, he went on to pursue a degree in geography, born out of his love for the environment. Later on he obtained a master's degree in business administration from the Nova Southeastern University in Florida, USA. His quest for advancement and self-actualization led him to pursue a law degree from the University of London. Professionally, he has a wealth of experience in the service industry, having worked at leading Jamaican commercial banks including Workers Bank, CIBC Jamaica Limited (now First Caribbean Bank), and Scotiabank, with his final banking position being senior marketing manager. After years of working in the banking sector, he opted for a career change by attending law school. Now a practicing lawyer, he limits his practice to real estate, probates and contract law.
